hey all my name is john and ive been around car my whole life (im 40) funny thing is im the only car guy in my entire family im hoping my 13 year old jacob will clinge on to the fun. my wife has a 99 bonnivelle that i hate its the only new smogable car we own so i told (asked) if i could build here another car so she wanted another nova ive had a 65 sedan and she drove a 62 wagon year ago. so i found this 72 in great shape on ebay up in napa valley trailered it home drove it 2 mile ran fine no problems great car. so what do i do completly tear it apart. my plans are leave the 350/400 tranny in it add vintage air speed tech arms still stay coils up front Daily driver remember and dse tubs and connectors with a g bar rear 235/40/18 on 8 in front and 295/45/18on 10.5 in back. heres some pictures

Nice project! A '72 Nova was my 1st car when I was your son's age!! Parent's paid $500 for it, they saw that I was starting to show an interest in cars, so they started me early. haha
I hope it works out for you and your son!

Cool thread! I have a 72 Nova also, and am having it built with my pops.
Funny thing, Cris G. (of JCG Restorations) found our original build sheet in the exact same spot when he removed the tank!

ok guys need some guidence the body is on the roto. still looking foward i intend to undercoat bottom after sub frame connectors and torque arm bracket is all welded in so what is the order i get it ready to do this. what i mean is in order to put connectors in ,,the subframe has to be in and straight than weld in connectors but not to sub frame pull sub frame under coat than reinstall subframe and weld to connectors?
doing the connectors should i have all suspension in car and on wheels or can i do it with just subframe on, on my 2 post lift?
johnny68
12-25-2010, 12:13 PM
well what do you do if the kids are playing ther new video game ond wife is doing her thing on christmas morning ? you go out to garage and mock up front suspension, ive already done the gulstrand mod and painted some bolts and misc. parts i. i may not get to work on the car due to the 7 inch's of rain san diego got (phone lines hate water) they have use on 12 hour days from the 19th thru the 31st only day off is today but hey blake its mostly goint to your torque arm setup and maybe a housing then jon and justin drivers inc your up next for the wheels ill be calling you, well i hope all have a great christmas and a happy and safe new year

I understand that dilemma about the subframe connectors. In order to get the best possible alignment with my DSE subframe connectors, I dropped the body, attached and aligned the subframe, then hoisted it back into the air with the subframe on before I cut the slots for the connectors. Its a bit of work, but otherwise you're just guessing where to cut.
johnny68
01-05-2011, 08:44 PM
well called up blake and ordered the torque arm set and 51 1/2 inch wide 9 inch housing. slowly but surely im making progress next is the steering and wheels take care all

You have a good list of stuff to get done buy the end of Feb whe your Torque arm arrives, Special Delivery!!
looking good
you had mentioned you were goin to undercoat the car, may I suggest you use Truck Box Liner instead. it is much tougher and just as easy to apply the Proform Brand is a single part open the can a spray it on and it is totally paintable and a gallon will do the entire underside and inside the trunk.
johnny68
01-30-2011, 09:54 PM
thanks blake for advise will do truck box liner hope i dont bug to much at rttc lol you will have to let me under that car of yours for pics oh and to clean the drool off of course

03-03-2011, 07:48 PM
well havent done much but get parts so heres what we have got lately 90's iroc box, kore 3 rear c5 disc brake set up from tobin thanks bud will post pic of brakes when on the rear end, and the best part is speed techs torque arm set up with about a 7 inch narrowed 9 inch 350 gear rear end and ride tech coilovers they will be in in a week or so we picked up the stuff from Blake at rttc and it went straight to powdercoaters and will be mocking up over the weekend and hopefully taking body of rotisserie also to put front end on to install the dse connectors then back on rotisserie to undercoat

If the car is a regular driver, I'd go for the higher profile, whichever width.
Roads are just too average to risk expensive wheels everyday with really low profile tyres.

Great progress!! I wish my old man was involved with my builds over the years.....but you guys are building a great car. Its a great learning experience and your skills will improve as you futher your build. As fustrating it can be to build a whole car, one of the many things I learned is patience, and its all worth it! Congrats and good luck. Nate

well its been 2 months since ive had the chance to work on the nova but we got the sub frame connectors 90% welded in today and will be finishing up any little welding thats left then i will be undercoating the bottom and final bolt in all the suspension and ship it off to the body shop for paint (dont worry we did most of the welding will car was on the wooden wheel stands then put it on the rotisserie)

It's good that John finally got his fix today by working on the Nova. He was really starting to get grumpy, mopey and just dragging his feet around. The Nova is looking good and will definately get done before mine will. Don't let all of his talk about the March Pulley System being the only bling he will put on his car. I have seen him at shows and he is a closet blinger. His show truck is as bling as it gets. Now that I have ruffled his feathers I'll see if he will let me use his lift and help me on my wifes car.

well have a small update . we went to the junk yard today mostly looking for seats or ??..the first row i went down saw a 74 pontiac with the doors so i got them they are stripped but for $80 couldnt pass them up. went to the 2nd yard and found a 80 camaro bullet mirror drivers side for $11 then went to the last yard and in the last row another 74 pontiac omega with complete perfect doors no dent all there so i had to have them , got them for $85 so now we're going to have one piece windows and the best part ive already sold the first set i bought i also sprayed raptor all over the interior and mocked up the nascar radiator (wich was at datona on 02/08 as far as inspection tag says) i needed to make the opening just a tad

I will be in Anniston, AL, on business the 3rd week of October, unfortunately. John, had a similar problem with my Camaro which is why I ended up swapping the Baer brakes for Wilwood with a separate park brake. I think Bryce has the right idea...if you can't build a new bracket to re-clock your caliper into a different position (perhaps in front of the wheel), then perhaps you can move the coil overs in board slightly.

ya eric bryce is going to make up some brackets to move the lower shocke mount over 1 1/2 aqnd that will fix issue, whats up with the camaro has jba been doing it to it? in the mean time i bent up the brake lines installed the dash and pad nothing fancy its a daily driver not a show car, and did some under dash wiring (an eighth of your wiring eric)

Looks great but you need to get yourself a block under the car in case those jack stands fail. At least something taller than you chest cavity.
BTW, you're making me really jealous, LOL.

hey craig i got most all my brake stuff from tobin at Kore 3 the line is a copper/nickle blend that is very popular in europe and farely new in the statesfrom what i hear , theres no real draw backs to it water doesnt effect it and its sooo much easier than stainless ( i rebent the same bend 5 times on same piece) really like it,, the valve bracket i also got from Tobin, the bracket was i believe $20 and a roll of 25 foot line was $50 i had a couple feet left over so make sure to get your measurements right and 1 roll will do it, tobin also has all the fittings one thing about the fittings tho the threads didnt go all the way to the edge so in reality only about 2 threads gripped the female fittings which i didnt like try and get fittings with threads the whole way down with no shoulder
