View Full Version : C5 brake people, what studs did you use?

Anyone who installed C5/LS1 brakes, what size studs did you use? The stock ones are too short for my rotors and spacers, so I need to upgrade. No auto place near me has studs with the same knurl and shoulder as the stock studs. Any ideas?

Try a napa hub store- the one with the parts wharehousein back. Not sure if you have one there, but they had a ton of studs. My front C4 spindles had long studs in them for wheel spacers & i had to find shorter ones- go figure. I may still have the long studs- what length do you need?

I need about 2.25 to 2.5 inch. I've found a set from Moser that's 2.85, but I think that's too long, it might stick out past the spacer. I think the Napa I went to has a warehouse, me and the guy there spent over an hour looking through books for a stud that would fit, we had no luck.

I have a kit that has 3rd Gen Camaro Hubs.. You can always drill them out.. Factory a 1st Gen is .472 knurl, So I would see if you could drill them out to fit bigger.. I did it on my Brother Mustang..
Here are some pics of the brakes for the 72 Camaro..

3rd gen hub? It fits fine? Would a 4th gen hub fit, too?

I used ARP but I don't remember the part#. They were 3" and I cut them down to the length I needed.

I thought cutting the stud would cause some loss in strength...?

Other than maybe at the 1st thread or 2 how would it loose strength. I cut them so they would be engaged in all the threads in my lugs. My 1st cut was about 1/8" long and I ground them down to final size on a belt sander and tapered the edges a little to ease starting.

Do you remember the specs that you turned down the third gen hub to or did you buy the hub from Tobin? I picked some up at the junkyard and I am going to take them to the machine shop.

Hey, would you recommend new hubs? They seem to be priced great and just in my range, I'm considering it now, only thing I'd worry about is the lugs not matching up. Do you know the thread size/spacing and length of the studs?

The factory studs for that setup is what I posted earlier, but shorter by .50.. So that would make them 2 inches long.. As for the lug pattern, it is the same as any Chevy Passenger Car lug..

They offer factory conversion and ARP studs, the factory ones are what you bought and are 2"?

I plan to on Monday, thanks for the link man. Those ebrake cables look pretty good, too, if I can't get the stock LS1's to work.

I guess he's behind on his calls, he supposed to call me back tonight. Definitely thinking I'll just get new hubs and replace the rear studs, so much less work, lol.

Kore 3 has a better part, Ebmiller has the better prices.
Its easy to make your own hub. Buy a 3rd gen rotor(cheapest possible should be about $35), cur the rotor part off, and cut the outside edge of the hub down to clear the vette rotors, you just have to bevel the outside edge 45 degrees about .300-.400 . Get the Kore 3 or Flynbye kit for $70 ish bucks and buy your calipers and abtunment brackets used. You can put together C5 brakes for well under $500.
Im lucky that I have access to a machine shop in northern california, but even paying for it, its probably a cheap job.

I just ended up buying studs from Tobin at Kore 3, the Flynbye guy was wicked hard to get on the phone, so I gave up and just get my stuff through K3. I'll go with those ATS spindles eventually, so I guess this is a better temporary solution. Well, at least cheaper.
