Hey guys,

I currently have a 350/350 turbo and have been doing some research on the 700r4. I am not mechanically inclined or have a location to do this swap myself and I had a couple questions.

First off, and this is embarrassing, how can I tell if my 350 by looking at it is a 2 or 4 bolt? I am totally new to the car world so my apologies.

I won't be racing this car and it would most likely weekend cruiser/daily driver. However, if I decide to put a little more into the engine down the road I wanna make sure it can handle it. I like the idea of the overdrive which is why I lean towards the 700r4.

What is the best solution for getting the tranny? Should I find a used one and have it rebuilt or just get a new one from somewhere like Bow Tie Overdrives.

Thanks in advance gurus!

I run a level 3 Bowtie Overdrives trans and it lives behind a 542 ft/lb 508 hp 383 sbc. If you are near hesperia they will do the install and pressure setting.

Rebuilt 700s can be a matter of finding the proper core and then finding a reputable shop with knowledge of making them shift properly.

Another big consideration is the Torque converter. You want it looser for the higher hp engine down the road, but too loose on a stock or mild engine running round town with highway gears (I am making an assumption here) it doesn't make much sense.

The whole '2-bolt' '4-bolt' thing is in regards to how many bolts hold the 3 inner Main Crank bearing caps in place. 4 bolt configurations being considered stronger and more capable of handling high HP.

Yeah it looks like Hesperia is a bit too far. I guess my next question is, let's say I have a 2 bolt right now but in the summer I'm gonna do an engine swap to a 4 bolt crate engine. Will I still be able to hook up the 700r4 to it and what would I need to do that. I just don't want to pay for something I'll only have on for a few months and then swap out.

Also, anyone know of a Los Angeles trans shop?

The tranny guy I use sells 700r4's with converter for around $1400. No core charge. He did my t-350 and it has never broke behind 585 injuns -a-twisten.

Thanks for the info Chris but I'm looking for someone local as I would like to purchase directly and have them do the install.

Definetly go with the Bow Tie Overdrives TV Made EZ kit. Worth its weight in gold. BTO makes some good stuff, I have been happy with everything I have bought from them.

Try SW Performance transmission out of Huntington Beach. Steve is a great guy to deal with, too. He set up my 700R4 and it runs perfect.

All Gen 1 SBC s use the same bellhousing pattern, so a crate SBC and an original SBC will bolt right up in every way.

I dunno. It seems all of the research points to a 700R4. It wont be my daily driver and its not gonna be put on the strip.

A buddy bought a 2002R4 from Monster Transmissions, seemed like a good deal, but my buddy deployed a couple times before we could get it in the car. Had problems due to assembly then found parts missing in the speedo drive, Monster not only ignored phone calls but later made promises to send parts and never did.

Seemed odd,the guy seemed helpful, but then all of a sudden just stopped doing what he said. Made me wonder if they are having $$$ problems.

I'd steer clear just in case

well the 200 is the same size as a th350 has more od and is stronger than a 700

if i was spending the coin id opt for a built 200
