So I going to the swap meet this weekend and will be on the hunt for a 4l80e for my 69 Camaro. I am looking to swap out my Th400.
Is there any particular year that I should look for? Also, does it matter if it’s out a truck with 2wd vs 4wd ?
Any part #’s that I’d need to look for on the case?

I know you definitely want a 2wd version. I believe the recommended ones are pre 1996 (or 97?)....like from the vans. Might want to ask CRITTER on here...Chris Ritter. He has experience. Or Jakeshoe....he actually builds/sells them and installs them. I believe the real difference is the earlier versions are a little smaller in some aspects and fit many conversions easier.

I had a pre 97 2wd version in my 67 Camaro and it fitted fine. Only thing needed was some hammer persuasion to the tranny tunnel where the ATF connections/lines go into/from the trans.

Are there any #'s on the tranny that reflect the year ?

If I am correct the 96 and back have the same transmission line location hook up as a 400. The 97 up has one transmission line at the front as a 400 but the other line is toward the rear of the tranny.:idea:

There is a tag on the drivers side of the transmission. I'm working from memory here but I believe it's a 2 digit code for the year. IE 97 = 1997. Cooling line location did change with the rear lines being moved back to provide better lubrication. Depending on the application locating the back line can be difficult on the later model transmissions. It all depends on how much space you have in the transmission tunnel. I'd ad that I am far from an expert on this subject. There many other forum members here with better backgrounds in these swaps. My only claim to fame is a recent swap to one in my second gen TA.

Dont let Chris fool you...he knows more about these than he lets on...lol. Of course, what he knows is directly related to the issues he had with his. Still, thats how we learn. But he is right, there are some here with depth of knowledge on this subject. Jakeshoe is one, and there are several others.

Check the converter if it has too many bolts like 6 or 8 its diesel, and pass.

I have found a 4L80 tranmission, but from a diesel car.
I anyway want to change the converter and open the trans to check everything.
what are the differences between gas and diesel trans?

I received pictures of the transmission just before disassembly from the van, without the pan.

Do you think it is OK? is the bolt pattern the same as my sbc? it comes from a 93 diesel van.
