Thinking of new wheels and sizes. Opinions please!

I have a white 69 camaro with orange stripes and I want some wheels. What finish would you go with? Justin at Driverz Inc says brushed centers would look good on my color combo though I was thinking flat black as it would match the trim on the car. It's also crossed my mind to powdercoat the hoops white to match the car. I'll probably buy 2 piece wheels and I don't want to have to make anything custom other than powdercoating.

Thinking of an 18/19 set up but could be swayed to 18's all the way around or 19's on all 4 corners depending. Additionally, it looks like there is no such thing as 19x9 wheels so I would have to go with a 10 in back if I go that route and I hear that rubbing can be an issue on some cars. I am also a little concerned that 19's up front would look a little big. Anyone running 19/20's or even 18/20's or is that just silly? Anyone have any strong opinion?

      Thanks,
      Matt

Hi Matt -- If I'm not mistaken, you're in SoCal right? Go to SEMA or RTTC next Mar/April and have a good look around. That'll help.

You'll get other's opinions that are all over the map. Some guys love 18's all around (see the DSE Test Car or Stielo's killer build). Others prefer 18s and 19s to get a little f/r stagger.

I am personally not a fan of 18's and 20's nor do I like 19's all around. You could look at Doug (DFresh), err Mr Renner's (wagon wheel) set up - 19's and 20's I think. They actually look great.

Bottom line here: do what you like best! It's your car and you have to live with it.

      Matt,

Can you send me a few pics of your car? If you are local enough to make out to the shop I could show you all the finishes in person which might help you with your decision. 19x10 are do able in the rear but they are a tight squeeze if you plan on running the car down 3 inches. Regardless if you need anymore help, feel free to give us a call.

Here's the car when it had 3 inch blocks in the rear. I've since raised the car a little in the back (2 inch blocks) and removed the billet grill. I like the look of the rear with the 3 inch blocks but the front sat a little too high IMHO.

If I can, I might try to make it out there in the next couple of weeks schedule depending...

      Nice car Matt.

I can see where bring the rear up was a good idea,my '69 had 2" blocks on it when I got it and changing to 1" blocks really took that "squatty" look out of it.

Personally if it were my car,I wouldn't add anymore white to it,there's plenty there already, especially with the endura bumper you're running.

I would also discount black centers, there's nothing on your car to match black (unless you're matching the front spoiler) and they get lost in my opinion, especially when moving.

White and Black cars are the only colors I feel comfortable with a full-polished wheel (hoop & center),that maybe something for you to consider once you narrow your choices down.

My suggestion however (for what that's worth, lol) would be to do a grey or smoked titanium finish on the centers with a polished hoop, that's a classic, timeless look that will work well on your car.

Cool car! Our Smoked Titanium centers are a nice contrast on white cars and don't have to match anything because the white and the tinted clear of the Smoked Titanium are both neutral.

it's all a matter of opinion, but I prefer an inch of stagger in diameter front to rear on the wheels. and AT LEAST an inch of stagger on the tire diameter. the reason being that sometimes when you have equal rim diameters and equal tire diameters, the fronts(wheels or tires) can look taller than the rears from different angles. and that is a truly horrible look.

19's/20's on a first gen is not a crazy idea at all. I and a few others here run them.

taller tires are also my preference. to me, fender gaps are what make or break the stance on a car. a larger diameter tire gives you more ground clearance, but makes the car look lower because it fills the fenders better. you can lay the frame on the ground, but if you have smaller tires and larger fender gaps, it will still look like crap. also with staggered wheel diameters, you can have even fender gaps yet still retain a little rake in the stance.

      Thanks for the input guys!

SR71 any pics of your 19/20 setup? Are your wheel wells stock? If so what are the specifics of your set up?

      Thanks,
      Matt

my wheel wells were stock in the beginning. but being the glutton for punishment that I am, I chose not to heed the fitment advice of the sponsors here. granted, the sponsors really know their stuff about these cars. but, I'm the guy that is always pushing it right up to, and usually over, the line. the tire sizes that they reccomended, 275/35/20 and 245/35/19, would have fit like a glove in the stock wheel wells. did the 295/35/20's that I bought against their advice fit? well, they fit inside the wheel wells but had no clearance on the inside. some quality time with the sawzall and a pair of minitubs is fixing the problem. should I have listened to the sponsors?, probably. but what fun would that be?

anyway, here is a pic of another members car here. it changed my mind about a 19/20 combo. I always thought they were too big until I saw this pic. http://www.rushforthwheels.com/galle...amaro001-1.jpg

I love the 18/19 stagger on the 69 fbodys. What about the 68 fbody will 19s look good on a stock frame and lowered 3 inchs in the rear?

I've had 18/19 and 18/18. I prefer the 18/18. I felt the deep dish out back actually made the wheel look an inch bigger. I HATE HATE a 20/18 combo and that's how I ended up feeling about mine.

Looking at your car, I think Justin is right, its got to be a brushed center wheel. On a white car, like yours, a black wheel would look out of place, and match exactly nothing. Brushed gives you the look of a tough, but elegant, and high end wheel, and the polished ties in any chrome, or polished stainless, etc. on the car.

Thanks for working with us and I know Justin is keeping a file under your name.

I agree w above, but what if he changed his rally stripes - and possiby some trim - to flat black? That would look bad a**!

Here are some black centered Forgelines on a white '69. I think they look killer:

Finish and diameter are a matter of personal taste but one thing is for sure; Black like white is neutral and therefore doesn't need to match anything and is a bold contrast to the white which is why people do it on white cars. Not for everyone but it is neutral and that's indisputable.

...and I've removed the polished grill since these pics so the black would match that. I am digging the brushed centers but that also matches nothing on the car.

I really like the 18/19 combo but it seem like there are more options in 19/20. If I went with a 19 up front and 20 in the rear, what backspace, width, etc... would I be looking at? Tire sizes?

      Thanks for the input, guys!

Yup, this here works because of his black stripes, and it ties in his wheels really well.

Behold! An all white 2011 Porsche with all black wheels in bone stock form from a world class company that knows all about style and performance and knows that black and white look great together because they're both neutral. All I would add on your car is a polished lip and a hugger orange pinstripe to tie in a little color and some shine and it will be money.
