What is the limiting factor on 1st gen front tire width?

What is the limiting factor on 1st gen front tire width? Fender wells? Tie rod? Anything I can do to fit a 18x9" rim/265 tire?

On mine, the tire would rub on the frame first.

Lance notched the framerails on his to accomodate wider wheels and tires.

Do you still believe in all the things that you stood by before? Are you out there on the front lines, or at home keeping score?
Do you care to be the layer of the bricks that seal your fate? Would you rather be the architect of what we might create?

X2...notching and hopefully reinforcing the frame rails is basically what's required to run something wider than a 245 without losing turning radius. The only semi-tricky spot is where the tire contacts the steering box mounting bolts since the notch gets a bit more involved. 18's will have slightly more clearance with respect to the control arms than trying to do it with 17's.

I'm pretty sure David Pozzi's first-gen had 285's on a modded stock subframe at some point in its evolution. Maybe he'll chime in with the gritty details...he probably already has, although a quick search didn't turn them up for me.

I'm running 17x9.5 with 275/40's, 5.5 back space. I rub lok to lok on frame and had to roll lip of fender. No issues on the track and I am 23 1/4" from ground to fender lip.
