I sandblasted my Impala frame with "playsand". What is the recommendation for final cleanup prior to applying epoxy primer that I purchased from Southern Polyuretane?

I went over mine a couple of times with wax and grease remover before shooting it. Don't wait too long or it's going to flash rust on you.

Just blow it off and shoot epoxy, don't use anything to wipe, you can't get metal any cleaner after blasting

You need to be really carefull what you sandblast with. Silica is a killer.I'm not sure if the sand your using is ok or not but you should definitely look into dedicated sandblasting abrasives for any future work. I'm pretty sure you do not want to use playsand. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong

99.9% of sand that is sold at any home improvement store is Silica based. There are a very few companies who sell limestone sand, which is mostly safe, though I'd recommend at least a respirator.

If you don't care about dust clouds forming when you blast, many home improvement stores carry pulverized limestone, which is a calcium powder. Great for blasting panels, as it's a lot gentler than other sands/abrasives.

I hope you did wear a respirator.... silica is nasty stuff when inhaled

Talked to Barry and he says to wipe the frame down with their Waterborne Wax & Grease Remover. Thanks for all the info..

I hate sandblasting in the open....that crap gets everywhere....need ear plugs, respirator, goggles, ful face shield, and long cuff gloves as a minimum....and all that garb gets hot in the Summer, and then you drip salty sweat on your newly blasted material.....LOL....did I mention that it gets everywhere and that I hate sand blasting?

There is always dust to remove after sandblasting. For sandblasting to work properly the sand particle has to disintegrate, which leaves dust.

I wipe almost everything metal with naphthaline. Just keep it away from plastic or paint you don't want gone.

what makes you think you can just wipe dust off sandblasted metal? it's blasted with sand, not nutshells ,some plastic media or soda, so the surface is very rough,it'll catch lint ,which will be impossible to remove, also by getting it damp and trying to wipe off, you're actually pushing the dust in micro pits leaving residue and opening window for problems down the road, that's why I advised to blow any remaining dust off, use a clean fine but firm bristle brush while blowing

The sand particle doesn't need to disintegrate for sandblasting to work. Granted, it often does, which causes dust. But that's not how it works.

I'd also say wipe it down with a dry rag while blowing it off. No reason to use a solvent...unless you've touched it. My blaster won't let play (river) sand through it...gotta use fine silica. What blaster are you using?

After blasting, I wipe it down with Phosphoric acid, rinse, and blow dry.

After that, I use a tack cloth to remove any residue and blow it off while it's suspended in it's final painting position. Then it's ready for epoxy prime & paint.
