Agree, Carl ...

David did a huge amount of work on the OLC but couldn't have achieved his artful magic without the wonderful canvas supplied by James in the first place. In the beginning, the OLC was very good and after development over the last year, this description can be changed to great.i

Let me tell you,to finish this event is unbelievable but a class win...the first time out?Priceless.

For someone who's been to Dave & Mary's shop numerous times,I have probably seen more of the underside of both BP and OLC then the shiny side and I totally agree with Mary, these were very, very good cars when they entered the shop and when they left after Dave worked his magic, they are truly better cars for it...I know both Steve and James will agree with me on that.

Dave is one of those old-school fabricators who can do it all and when it comes to chassis setup,we can all agree he's probably forgotten more than most people know.

The fact they not only finished but won is a testament to Dave's prep and attention to detail,it's obvious not a single nut or bolt went unchecked.

My hat's off to the entire OLC team...job very well done guys!:1st::1st::1st:

In the beginning, the OLC was very good and after development over the last year, this description can be changed to great. It's an awesome car and so good to see the success by an awesome team.

I didn't do much other than a bit of welding, a lot of cleaning and polishing, and mailing out a gazillion T-shirts.

Ok... here's the deal - James & David, Myself & Co-driver UK Chris stepped up to this event and both completed it. Saying the event is hard is and understatement as you guys have no idea what everyone goes through. The experience is something I know I will never forget and also one that I will be repeating next year. However, how about for next year some other pro-touring cars enter and prove they're not just trailer queens... We're flippin' tired!

James & David - AWESOME TIME GUYS!! I'll speak to you both soon.

I have to say that is was a true treat to see the One Lap Camaro run in person. From a performance factor the car is simply amazing, from an attention to detail standpoint I was simply in awe, and from the "HOLY SH*T THAT THING IS FAST" perspective, well... lets just say I need a MUCH faster car...

I'm just getting my sanity back after an exhausting week!
A few thoughts are:

1. Without the support and help of many people, we could not have done this event, or would surely not done as well.

2. This was something I knew would be tough, but rewarding, something I could look back on and be glad I did it.

3. This was an "easy" year, "only" 3500 miles, other years have been up to 6000 miles, with 900 mile days instead of "only" 500 mile days. Also we didn't have to drive on track in the rain, where we have zero experience.

4. James built an awesome car and I helped him refine it and test it. We made a good team. James did an outstanding job driving OLC on new tracks against veteran drivers.

5. All the competitors were super nice, and hanging out with Mr Angry and his buds was pure fun! I'm sure they think I'm the dullest guy around because I didn't have much to say, - I was so tired most of the time that I didn't initiate much conversation.

6. Wednesday afternoon I got dehydrated bad, I nearly passed out, and was pretty wiped out all day Thursday from it. I was not drinking enough water when on the road so we wouldn't have to stop along the highway for any extra bathroom breaks, - not a good plan. By Friday I got back to a more normal kind of just-tired state. Those that saw me Thursday probably wondered if I was going to make it to the end! Once we got tired and behind schedule, we didn't eat regular meals, and just bought finger food at the gas station, and burgers at the track for lunch. You can do this for a day or two, but do it for a week, and it will catch up to you. I have a new-found respect for anyone who completes this event!

Must be nice to have so many people fighting to have you drive their car......Huh Mary

Thanks to James and David alot of here got to run in the One Lap........vicariously of course

900 hundred miles in one day is a cake walk.....I did LA to El Paso in 14 hrs by myself and I wasn't haulin a$$.

Just feed her chocolate James. If you put some on a stick over the front end so she can chase it while she's driving the lap times get even better.

Would any car be able to survive that?

David Pozzi
05-10-2010, 05:37 PM
Mark, you would drive the 900 miles only after you run twice on the race track you are at. So, you get up at 6:30 am, breakfast, then drive to track, runs begin around 8:30-9am so you have a little time to unhook trailer , empty car, find your gear, walk the track, etc. We got done with second runs around 2pm to 4pm depending on what track. THEN you drive to the next track. Your 14 hour drive would start say 3 to 4 pm, that puts you at your next track at 6am!

900 hundred miles in one day is a cake walk.....I did LA to El Paso in 14 hrs by myself and I wasn't haulin a$$.

As David said... there is more to it than the driving... here would be a typical day... with a typical 500 mile transit

0630H - get up
0800H - arrive at the track
1000H - you do your first timed run of the day
1330H - you do your second timed run of the day
1430H - you leave the track
2200H - arrive at the hotel
2230H - sleep

but... there are travel bonuses to look forward to.. TIME CHANGES! Horay!

now... add 400 more miles... 6 more hours... now what?

Thanks everybody for your support through this - we both appreciate it. I'm working on editing pics and vids and hope to have some updates soon...

David, it is actually Karl and I was being sarcastic (we need a sarcasm font!). I know that you are making that drive after a hard day at the track. That doesn't include any issues that crop up with the car either.

Even knowing what a PITA it can be I would jump at the chance, so what does that say about me?

You guys are warriors in my book, great job hanging in there all week. I know that was a tough haul.

James/David, thanks for blogging along the way, it helped us see how tough this event is through your tired eyes. I could almost hear the exhaustion in your postings...LOL. I know it takes some dedication to sit down a type about the day when you are tired and just want to go rest for a few minutes before blasting off to another track. Thanks again for taking us along for the ride. Several guys here at work were leaning in my office door asking how you guys were doing and wondering where you were and wanting to know the scores and times after each event. A couple of them wanted me to thank you for keeping up with your blog and said to tell you that you were living the dream and that they always wanted to do something like that. :1st:

Sorry Karl I thought you weren't getting it! (I don't know where the "mike " came from.)
I think the One Lap is something any car guy like us should do. You could do this event in just about any car. But to go for a win in class, pick a thin class if you can. To win overall your class must have a lot of entrants so you can get more points. I have friends with a Honda CRX that finished 4th in class but 10th overall! I handled the night without sleep pretty well, but not so good after the dehydration, that took the fun out of it for a couple of days.

Next year is the 45th anniversary of Can-Am, which may include a special event at Road America. I'm considering running my Lola T-70 there which will take some effort to accomplish. Running another 1 lap 2 months ahead of RA would be too much to get done.
David

James OLC

First few videoes from the week... they are a little long and generally all follow the "entire run".

The structure of the One Lap events is 1 recon lap which originates in the pits after which you stop at the start/finish line on track. Once all of the cars have stopped on track you are given 3 timed laps - the combined time of all three laps is your time for the event. Following the timed lap you get one cool down lap. One of the most difficult things about this format is Turn 1 - you never get an opportunity to experience Turn 1 at speed until your second lap... you miss it on your warm up lap and you are still accelerating on your first lap. The other thing that is difficult is that if you don't know the track (and David and I didn't know any of them except from second hand sources) you have to be aggressive on your recon lap to get a feel for braking and shifting zones... enjoy...

Cool footage. It takes a lot of time to get stuff like this uploaded so thank you.

For any would be drivers out there remember you have to have at track experience. Not sure how strict they are but the rules state:

All racetrack competitors must submit an outline of his or her driving background. Racing experience or special driving schools (Track Time, Bob Bondurant, Skip Barber, Jim Russell, etc.) is required for all on-track competitors.

How did you guys do on tires/pads/other disposables? Did you end up needing a trailer worth of spare parts and tools?

We wound up not needing any of the spares that we carried. Which was a good thing - because it means that we didn't need them. The car didn't even notice the trailer on the highway so it didn't hold us up at all. The biggest benefit of the trailer was the ease of preparation and departure before and after the track events. Spares not withstanding it meant that we didn't have to pack and unpack the trunk every day.

Next year we will tow the trailer again, albeit with a different load. I wouldn'y bring both spare tires and would rethink the third member. I would add a cooler and an ez-up and a couple of other things.

When I asked Mark what the one spare that he felt we could not leave behind was he said "whatever you don't bring". Nuff said.

That's great news. Congratulations. And it's a real testament to the reliability of your car. How many oil changes did you perform during the event?

Thanks Steve. We had two failures over the week and the combined cost of the two issues was under a buck seventyfive... fortunately neither were game ending (although the shrink wrap/alternator problem was a game changer to be sure - it put us in a huge hole from a sleep perspective and was hurting engine performance at Hallett and Tulsa). We wound up not changing oil over the course of the week but we will be doing an oil analysis this week to see how things look. I was going to say that there wasn't time but in hind site we probably could have on Monday between the road course and drag strip... but that was only three days in.

One of the biggest issues you face is "if it ain't broke, do I dare fix it?" There were a couple of small things that we're nagging us from time to time but I was reluctant to dig in to them for fear of creating an issue. For example our headlights could have been better aligned - nothing major, wasn't a factor, but in an ideal world they could have been better - BUT the last thing I wanted to do was potentially break, strip, or lose bolt or spring and go from two "ok" headlights to one "ok" headlight or worse.

It's not a trailer hitch, it's a multipurpose tow hook !!!

Congratulations on the win

The video at Road America brought me some memories. The lines you were driving were the ones I wanted to keep going with and my instructor kept telling me were wrong, lol. All late apex's they say. The carousel is so damn wide and I wanted the inside and he wanted me out past the middle. I really felt a bit uncomfortable being out that far in case it started to drift even if there is room to go off he track.

It made me feel exhausted all over agian watching them. I never realized how much it takes out of you on a long coarse like that. You had to be beat at the end of the day and the week.

I look forward to seeing you at Gingerman.

David Pozzi

Getting left early in the Carousel is where I should have been. it would have been far more important to get the Carousel right if they didn't have the cones at the Kink. I like having room outside too.
