The 2010 Tire Rack One Lap of America kicks off today and David and I are going to do our best to provide live (technology willing) updates throughout the event. For simplicity this thread on Pro-Touring.com is going to be our focus – in addition to our blog, facebook, and twitter. We are hoping that you guys will help to spread the word to other forums on our behalf while we are on the road – the last thing we want to do is try to keep everybody updated but not be able to do a very good job as we go. Please feel free to quote, copy or paste anything from this forum anywhere where you feel there is interest. This way (hopefully) we can keep everybody up to date as we go without sacrificing quality for quantity.

Here is the official schedule for the 2010 Tire Rack One Lap of America:

Friday April 30th
Wet Skid Pad, Tire Rack Headquarters, South Bend, IN

Saturday May 1st
Road America, Elkhart Lake, WI (Long and Short Course)

Sunday May 2nd
Mid America Motorplex, Pacific Junction, IA

Monday May 3rd
Hallett Motor Racing Circuit, Jennings, OK
Tulsa Raceway Park, Tulsa, OK

Tuesday May 4th
Gateway International Raceway

Wednesday May 5th
Mid Ohio Sports Car Course, Mansfield, OH

Thursday May 6th
Lightning Raceway – New Jersey Motorsports Park, Millville, NJ

Friday May 7th
Nelson Ledges Road Course, Garrettsville, OH

Saturday May 8th
Dry Skid Pad, Tire Rack Headquarters, South Bend, IN

The OPTIMA Batteries OneLapCamaro – along with David and (finally) James – is in South Bend now and we are officially registered for the race. The paperwork is in and David has a pile of decals that we need to place on the car Friday morning before making our way through tech and heading off for an orientation meeting and the final drivers meeting. Then it’s off to Tire Rack’s skid pad where we’ll run with the sprinklers on (although the weather may make that redundant) before packing up and heading off to Plymouth, WI tonight and on to Elkhart Lake and the incredible track at Road America!

We’ll start posting updates tomorrow as we go! Here are some links to follow our progress…

Started the day with registration, tech, and stickering up the car...

Lots of cool cars here, Mr. Angry's Charger is awesome, there are some GTR's, some GT2s, an Ultima GTR and some other cool hardware. Camaro's are well represented, there is our '67, a late 2nd gen ('78 I think), a 3rd Gen IROC, and a very nice 5th Gen.

The event officially kicks of shortly. We'll keep you posted...

According to the info kit, spectators are welcome at ALL venues so feel free to come by if you want.

I just got a report.. they finished the wet skid pad with a score of .76g

That's pretty good in the wet..

They are now mobile and heading towards the next spot.. tornado warnings in the area..

That is all...

Skid pad was fun! A bit hard to see with all the water spraying from the sprinklers. Just looked up results and we placed 48th at .758 G, Mr Angry finished .629 in 68th place. OLC felt great and was very well balanced. I was hoping for a .8 but didn't quite get there. The Michelin ties make a vibration when they are near breaking loose on the skid pad. It was very easy to tell when the limit was being reached.
I'm in Plymouth Wi, close to Road America, tomorrow I drive the long course, then James drives the short course.
Trailer towed great, we hardly knew it was there! Our stuff is dry too!

Hey guys -

First off, for those who haven't seen the One Lap Camaro in person you are missing out as the car is simply beautiful and handles like its on a rail. Watching it run on the wet skid pad was a real treat and I think that by the end of the week it's going to trounce some real high dollar stuff. So far so good, although we do have a leaky fuel pump which will hopefully be remedied tomorrow morning... we'll see though.

We made it to Council Bluffs, IA without incident - 525 miles from Road America to the hotel. The car is great on the highway and doesn"t even notice the trailer.

As I said earlier - David did great on the long course at RA. I got around ok but not as well. Larry snapped this in the Canada corner..

May 2nd sees us at the Mid America Motorplex and another sunny morning. The OPTIMA Batteries OneLapCamaro is running mid pack overall right now and second in the vintage American class behind the long time Lap Dogs in the '78 Camaro. One of the many things that is becoming apparent is that there is no greater advantage than experience and we are fighting an up hill battle to learn new tracks and hit them hard right out of the shoot. The car continues to run well but last nights 9 hour run has led to a new sound here and there.

Here is David strapped in and ready to go for his first run at Mid America...

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/05/mid20david201-1.jpg

and here is as running through the short, technical course...

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/05/mid20david202-1.jpg

Thats all for now. James will run the course his afternoon then it's off to Hallett Oklahoma - a short 480 mile jaunt across the heartland of America

Update:

At the track today David finished 26th in the field and 13 SECONDS in front of the 2nd gen Camaro they are battling with for first in thier class!

If James does good they can pull into the lead for thier class!

GO JAMES!!!!!!

James OLC
05-02-2010, 11:32 AM
The OPTIMA Batteries OneLapCamaro is done running the Mid America Motorex and is on the highway heading south to Stillwater, Oklahoma. The skies stayed dry for our time on the track and a few drops are falling as we head out.

David's time this morning was good for 26th (?) overall and first in our class - tieing us for 1st after 4 events. James ran the track in the afternoon and when times are available we'll post an update.

With three tracks, five events and nearly 1000 miles in the books attrition is starting to be a factor. Yesterday two cars - a Cadillac CTS and new ZR1 Corvette - fell out of competition (the first following a scary off track excursion in the Canada corner and the second with an apparent mechanical issue). Today the defending One Lap of America champion's Nissan GTR suffered from mechanical woes and may not continue.

Mr. Angry's 68 Charger had fuel pump issues which he was able to resolve with a 100 mile wide trip but he back up and was running on course as we pulled out.

For now we have a 400 mile transit to our hotel and will start tomorrow at the Hallett Motor Racing Circuit before heading to the Tulsa Raceway for some quarter mile action in the evening.

Cheers!

CarlC

Got to the motel at 9:30, this is the earliest we have gotten in, and tomorrow is a gut-buster day. Road course, night drags, then 380 miles of driving!

Great meeting jasons56 today, nice to get to meet some of our members!

Our class leader the white 2nd gen Camaro, has two drivers, I"m not sure which is faster, but the pattern seems to be I am faster in the first runs, and they are faster in the 2nd runs. We might swap running order to see what that does, or I may run both sessions tomorrow and James can do the drag racing. The OLC is running great on track, but kinda noisy to talk over when we are on the road. I caught a short nap today but my head was bobbing all over and my neck is a little sore, not to mention my lower back.

Learning the tracks is tough to do, we can get around pretty good but even 1 or 2 extra laps before our runs would really help. I'm driving hard but not all-out so we don't hurt the car. Any time lost to repairs would put us way behind in lost sleep time.
Well, time for bed!
David

jasons56

It was very apparent that Team OLC is running a smart, conservative pace.

I would have a hard time "holding back" like that even though its obviously the right thing to do. Get just a little out of shape in a short 3 lap race and you move way back in the pack, quick.

I would however LOVE to see OLC on a good old fashioned bonzai run when a race isn't at stake.

David, how much more did OLC have left in it on a "theoretical" all out perfect lap?

Seemed as if quite a few of the top 20 competitors were taking more chances to get some of the laps they did. That Yellow Vette comes to mind. :)

James OLC
05-02-2010, 08:03 PM
Looking at the results from today I am really encouraged... The timing for the OLoA events is the total time for three laps from a standing start. David ran his three laps in a total time of 5:38.506. I ran my three laps in a total time of 5:46.308 which is 7.8 seconds slower over three laps or about 2.6 seconds per lap slower. I knew that I had given it everything that I had but my line could have improved but to be that close to David's times give me hope...

As of right now, the results are posted up through Hallett #1. Mr. Pozzi posted the OLC's best finish thus far, placing 14th overall and beating out a bunch of SSGT1 BB cars. UPDATE: Hallett #2 is posted; they went 19th overall. They are now 1st in the Vintage American Class. Tonight they drag race...yay solid axle! They ought to pull off the side of the road a few times to practice some 60' (unhitching the trailer first!!).

The most eyebrow-raising team thus far seems to be the official BMW team running the X6M. The times they are running are ridiculous with a 5000lb+ SUV. It goes to show you what some of these hired guns can do.

We're sitting in the parking lot (pardon me - the pits) at Tulsa Raceway Park waiting to run the drag strip at 5 so we finally have some time to post.

David did great this morning. His first run at Hallett was a 4:39.396 which was good for a 14th place finish overall and first in Vintage American; his afternoon run was a 4.39.805 which was 19th overall and first in Vintage American. This moved us to first in our class and 29th overall. Hopefully I can make up some of that this evening but it's going to be a tough balance between hooking and going and frying the clutch. The plan is to "ease" it off the line and run the snot out of it on the back end... Hopefully we don't have any serious issues - once we're done in Tulsa we have a 400 mile transit stage which should put us in St. Louis around 1 am (I hope).

HELP - we are in Clairmore, OK are having a charging system nightmare. Thought the alternator had died, replaced it, still only making 11.5 volts. Checked the trigger wire from the ECU and there is no power. We're trying to rewire the alternator - a 95 chev half ton - but to no avail. Any alternator gurus??? Do we need a resistor in the wire? Can we trigger it from elsewhere?

James, do you have an amp meter and if so what is it reading....

If the problem still exists after the alternator change I'd look to loose wiring or main grounds. Possibly some connecter got wet?

Start a wiggle test with the car running and the interior lights on, look for changes.

I don't have my GM access here but I am trying on line. You should be able to full feild it temporarily to get a charge.

Did some digging on LS1tech..

The resistence is tiny.. in a factory car it's supplied by the idiot light. Here's what I found:

Yep, you need to make sure that the red wire going to the alt needs some type of resistance on it, whether it is supplied by the PCM and idiot light, or a 470 ohm 1/2 watt resistor.

I think I originally used one as low as 4.7 ohm... been a long time though.

Steve1968LS2
05-03-2010, 08:23 PM
More.. but the problem is that neither have a F-body/vette alternator or a GM computer.. so this info may be useless.

Your charging system worked.. I can't imagine that it all of a sudden wants a resistor.. that's not typically how it works.

OK from everything I have read on here, on a F-body alternator pin B on the 4 wire plug should have a 12v source with a 470ohm 1/2 watt resistor inline in order to "turn on" the alternator. Well I tried that and it didnt work. Got a new alternator same thing. So last night in frustration I decided to leave the wire and resistor where it was and put 12v to pin C and BINGO! Alternator started charging and the gauge went to 14 volts.

So in my expirience, pin B needs the 12v w/470ohm resistor and pin c needs 12v in order for the alternator to energize.

This was a carb'd setup using a '98 camaro alternator (even though autozone only had one part number for 98-02 f-bodies)

Found this.. again for a GM f-body style alternator.. worth a shot.

I agree, something changed....is the alternator main BAT+ running off of a ISIS feed or fused link from battery?

edit...did it get fixed? was that an old text?

electronics should be the same, just different mounting locations and amperage outputs.
1 line = BAT+ 2nd = line ignition feed 3rd = line field (PCM grounding) 4th = lamp

Working through it. There was (is) a resistor in the one wire to the alternator. Historically there has only been one wire running to the alternator and that was from the ECM only - the ISIS system is not in the equation.

Long story short... when we left Tulsa we stopped at a set of lights and the car coughed... kind of hard. We checke dthe major stuff out and were heading down the road and saw the the voltage was low. Limped to an O'Rielly's and are now in their managers front driveway working on the car while the police search for a car thief.

Checked the apparent resitance of the original wire - looks like 186 ohms...

In the diagram Steve just posted, there are the holes on the back side of the Alt.

If they are they are there, is one shaped like a "D"? Is so, can you look through the hole and see a silver plate about 3/8" in? If so that is the grounding plate for the internal regulator, you can stick a cotter pin or anything in there and ground it to the body of the alt.

This would give you max charging capabilities of the alt.

Just throwing ideas out there, my pop is a master tech and suggested this.

Are they still up trying to fix this?

I'm pretty familiar with that model of alternator since when I worked at Kragen I wanted to retrofit it to my 64 truck. I figured out how they work from playing with the bench tester in the store. My current Camaro also has the same alternator.

There should be a four pin plug. 1 larger pin and 3 smaller pins. The larger pin gets jumped to the batter post. The middle smaller pin is the exitor wire and goes to the idiot light. You can jump the exitor wire to the battery post to get you out of a bind. Just unplug the 4 pin plug overnight as if you have both wires jumped to the battery post it will have a drain when the car is off.

I'm afraid to call you if you are sleeping. This is an easy temporary fix if all it is is the exitor wire not sending a signal.

EDIT: Well since there was no good news update I risked calling Jim. Got VM which hopefully means they are sleeping.

I was hoping they could wire in an LED or something to bring the resistance up.. or try jumpering over.

One thing I didn't mention in my post but I did in my VM.

To excite the alternator the middle of the 3 small pins only needs 12v when the car starts. Once you apply the voltage and excite the alternator it will keep charging. So it would take just a few seconds to see if it fixes their problem.

Chad-1stGen
05-03-2010, 09:25 PM
not to make it work, but to keep it from frying other electrical components.

I guess I could of gotten lucky. When I first was playing with this style alternator I jumped both wires to the battery terminal and ran it like that for a month+ without adverse electrical issues other than the battery having a drain with the vehicle off. It was later I figured out it only need voltage temporarily to excite the alternator and that my idiot light wire would do the trick fine.

But there are four pins..

Right. 2 pins are NOT needed to make this function. I'm almost tempted to go make a video using my camaro of how to make this work.

Of the 4 pins one is larger and 3 are the same size but smaller. The larger pin gets jumped to battery in normal conditions. The middle pin of the smaller 3 is used to excite the alternator. I was able to jump it full time without adverse effect but if he is concerned you only need to jump that wire when the car starts to excite the alternator and then you can remove it.

I think he is saying to only use the 12v directly until the car is started.. once the alt is "excited" then it can be removed so you don't fry the system.

Yup that is what I'm saying if you are worried.

I just put my money where my mouth is and did this very thing on my own Camaro 5 minutes ago which runs that alternator. When I worked at Kragen and had the bench tester to do this it was 13-14 years ago so I wanted to make sure I wasn't making a mistake.

Mr Quick's wiring diagram shows what I've been trying to say. My old 64 truck and my current camaro are wired the correct way. I'm just throwing out an emergency alternative that has worked for me in the past and did not damage my own alternator (YMMV). Ya know something to get them to the and through the next event until they can do a more proper set up.

According to Mr. Quick the worse that can happen is the alternator is fried and they already bought a new one.

Glad it was figured out.. a bad wire makes sense.

Was it burned? that would explain the cough/smoke .. especially if it was a power wire.

Good luck today.. you earned being there.

If you start having issues on the charging system again, while enroute from Gateway to OH., let us(Vail's Classic Cars) know. ( I P.M.'d you my cell # and the Shop #)

We are next to Buick and Chevy dealership, and there are a couple techs over there that would stay and help out.

Pass the word along to Mr Angry, they can use the shop too, we are across from a Mopar dealership, if thats needed.

Great job so far....!! otherwise goodluck!!

You're in 34th overall.. that 16-second drag time really hurt your standing there.Anybody can have one bad run....which means they got that out of the way and now it's somebody else's turn to have a bad run.....I still have high hopes that they will climb up through the ranks during the last few events...I'm anticipating that some of the others will have troubles along the way, the others can't keep up that pace forever and OLC is keeping a safer, less parts breaking, pace from the sound of it. Keep up the good work guys...your perserverance will come through for you.

We're at Mid Ohio this morning and the hours are starting to take their toll - on us more so than the car. The good news is that with the charding sytem fixed the car is running better. The bad news is that a 900 mile day yesterday, plus a time change... hurts. Once we're done today here we have a 500 mile transit to New Jersey.

On the highway... 26 mpg

On the track... 2.5 mpg

Sorry guys - another tough couple of runs today at New Jersey. The car is running well but the days are taking their toll. Last night a dollars worth of trailer harness connectors put us on the side of the Pennsylvania Turnpike with no tail lights, no brake lights, and 200 miles to go. We finally got it together (and ran those last 200 miles in the dark) and found the problem at the track today.

We made it without issue to Newton Falls, OH tonight and will make a final press tomorrow to see if we can turn things aroung.

Mike has the Charger running really well and is making his move up the standings. The two oldest cars are still hanging in but the miles are taking their toll...

David just finished his first run at Nelson Ledges. This is a tough track that has a lot of "surface variations" that favors the softer sprung cars. One of the new Mustangs put a piston through the block just before David went out but it wasn't anything too bad (except for the guy with the 'stang). One of the supercharged HHR's went over the track curbing hard enough to deploy the side impact air bags!!!

End of first run... David was a couple spots ahead of the '78 so that's 5 points back - 10 to go...

Coolest thing so far this morning was watching Chris wheel Mr. Angry's charger around the track on what may have been their best run of the week. The look of suprise when the Charger passed the mini that was ahead of him was priceless!

Second that, and good job recovering from the spin. I take it you were able to keep the motor running and get right back to the action.

Thursday was a tough day in sports...The Sharks lost as well. Friday is a new day. Whatever happens it was great to follow the action, and we are all proud of the great effort.

If I understand it correctly the One Lap Time Trials are not the best lap, but the complete run of a couple of laps from a standing start. The event format seems heavily biased to those that have history on the chosen circuits. Any type of error is extremely costly, so going all out is not a possibility. Is there any practice or low speed tour to get familar with the tracks? I guess the shorter circuits you can walk before the event starts according to the rules. With the schedule being so tight it sounds like an incredibly grueling event. Just finishing is a win.

150 miles to South Bend... Weather looks ominous... Clutch sounds freaky... But we're ploughing ahead. I think we made up some ground today - fingers crossed.

You think you guys will stop by?

I doubt it buddy - thanks for the invite though!

Mr. Angry burst a high pressure line to his hydroboost... small fire but nothing horrible. They were able to get a new one made up but lost some time. It's really cool that the two oldest cars in the field are holding up to this point with some of the newest stuff around! It's not for a lack of hard work though...

Rain is done right now. Windy and chilly tomorrow but will be dry. Going to try and pry my butt out of bed in the morning. Hope to have some photo's and maybe a short vid.

Awesome job guys! Way to represent. Also, I would never wash the car again.....it looks perfect with the brake, exhaust, rubber and track grime down the side!

A class win on their maiden voyage!

Congratulations to the Team Optima OLC, James, Mary, and David, who all have worked their tails off for the past year to get ready for this event. You guys are an inspiration to us all.

Agree, Carl ...

David did a huge amount of work on the OLC but couldn't have achieved his artful magic without the wonderful canvas supplied by James in the first place. In the beginning, the OLC was very good and after development over the last year, this description can be changed to great. It's an awesome car and so good to see the success by an awesome team.

I didn't do much other than a bit of welding, a lot of cleaning and polishing, and mailing out a gazillion T-shirts.

Cheers,
Mary Pozzi
