View Full Version : Early Mustang thoughts..

I sold my car and I am looking for a new project. I was thinking about maybe looking for a early mustang (65) with a 03 cobra drivetrain pt car. Is this a popular swap? Or has anyone even attempted this swap before? I'm a mopar guy so I don't know much about the old fords.

it has been done before check for username finch on here he built a badass mustang with that motor. It was a cover car for popular hotrodding. I think it is a pretty involved swap, but not sure

It is pretty involved. You need to ditch the shock towers with a MII conversion or equivalent. If you want to run a T56 you need to do a bit of tunnel work as well but a 5 speed will fit no problem. There is quite a bit of support out there now so it is not impossible anymore. All it takes is time and money.

I believe CDC got a mod motor in a 67/68 while keeping the shock towers. I'd hate to have to change the plugs... They look like they have been notched. IIRC, RRS offers some notched towers. I believe NPD sells them.

RRS sell the towers, but they also can supply a template for you to notch them yourself. The other issue is that the notched towers will only work with the RRS strut front suspension. Which is fine if you prefer to go that way. I personally like the RRS kit over the MII suspension, but thats just me.

Year One did a '66 named "Hoss Boss" with '03 Cobra Cammer engine + transmission swap using Martz Chassis front end kit + 4-link in the back. I have pictures filed if you need them...

I know its been done into later mustangs. My former boss has one that was build that was voted into the 10 best this year at SEMA. Search Boss 5.40. Its the blue 70. It is a seriously amazing car. But I think he is afraid of it.

C&S performance built that car, it was at the shop while I had my car there for exhaust and dyno tune work. It is an amazing car.

Trust me it runs better than it looks. Its a super cool car. It is really cool when it sits beside his Kause 9 car. It drives and performs amazing.

I started working on a similar project a few years ago for my 68 but took a cheaper route and used a Mark VIII as the donor car. Its a budget build so instead of using the MII suspension I just made a custom frame and use the front and rear suspension from the Mark VIII. I just don't have a blower :), but considering I only have around a grand in the conversion so far I think I can live without it, for now.
