Has anyone designed and made our own? I've never done this before but I figured I'd give it a try. My plan is to design something to replace the stock piece so it will hold aftermarket autometer guages, probably make it out of aluminum. I was hoping to grab some ideas off some of you guys that have done this already.

Covans makes a few, as do some other companies....I'm not a fan--I think the 67-68 Camaro/Firebird dash is one of the most beautiful dashes ever put into a production vehicle...
I'm assuming your looking for a 68 Firebird.

Route 66 Motorsports has an awesome Billet dash you can put your own gauges in. check it out http://www.rt66parts.com/product_info.php?products_id=2009&osCsid=c113f5c85c3b064016722b904b229caa

That won't fit a 67-8.

Yes, I know I didn't make this myself or have it custom made but I love the look on my car.

The main complaint would be the tach is not large enough. More useable than you think. The look is stock, too stock with the orange needles and black background. I went with white needles. They also have white faces.
Multi gauges are the best answer for me instead of making up a panel with 6 different gauges in it.
Oh, another complaint would be the $1000 check for a gauge cluster. All wired up though and just screw it in. I had a problem with the gas gauge, but it was the float and with some shortening of the tube now works much better.
