I am trying to figure out how to mount a full set of Autometer gauges in an 80s G body. The problem is they are small & I want mount them in the stock location. I want to go with Autometer, but in the models I like the smallest they make is 2-1/16" to fit in the center 4 spots:

So for those of you that have mounted these gauges, is the area that is represented by dimension "A" in the below image able to be trimmed so they can be mounted closer together?

So I can do something like this:

Doesn't gain alot, but any bit helps.

So is this trim ring what holds it onto the panel, or is there a lip on the can that holds it?

There is a lip on the can that sets on the panel and the trim ring is crimped onto the lip. Then on the backside of the Autometer gauge there are 2 threaded posts and a mounting ring that goes over the threaded posts and presses against the panel securing it. I hope that makes since.

Yep it makes sence. So I take it Dim A that is on the Autometer image above is a bezel that doesn't even have to be used.

I think the bezel holds the glass in/on the gauge and is also used as trim. I know that on a Stewart Warner gauge ("5) the glass is held in by glue and the bezel covers the glue line and is also used as trim.

I have seen some of the aftermarket ones & to me they don't look quite right, or out of balance.
