View Full Version : Project Ginger 67 Camaro
I've finally got the motivation and room to get my car done. I've had her since 1993. I bought her with lawn mowing money when I was a kid and did a low budget resto with disk brakes, rebuilt suspension, interior, a 700r4 and a long rod 327. I blew it up for the 3rd time in 1997 and tore it apart. Since then I've bought 4 homes and 2 boats so you can imagine I've been a little busy.
She was originally gold but faded chevy red when I bought her. She's going back to red. I'm thinking 06 Viper red with silver or white Z28 stripes. Hence the name (Ginger) the temperamental red in the garage. My wife is 7.5 months pregnant with our second kid so you can imagine spending time with Ginger stirs up some jealousy around the house. HA!
I'm building her to compete in autocross, track and some of the wide open events like the one in Nevada. My cousin Jack Fields at Starlite Rod & Kustom is helping me with the stuff I don't do like the cage, paint & body. I had new quarters put on back in 2000 after reading about Steilo's car. I ran out of steam and priorities shifted shortly after.
I grew up racing Karts and compete in the Skip Barber F2000 cars at laguna Seca and Miller in Utah so I'm really looking for this car to be track worthy. Ideally a 67 Camaro version of a GT2 Porsche.
My build plans. So far I've had her media blasted with crushed glass, filled the firewall with 18 gauge plate, sprayed it with dtm primer, repaired the drivers side floor with a patch panel, replaced outer wheel wells, dse tubs and a new trunk pan.
I just picked up a Lateral Dynamics rear suspension from a board member and a LS7 with everything but an ecu. My next big purchase will be a AM front subframe and a TKO 600. I'll update with pics as the build moves along.
I've done all of this since early February when I found a set of DSE tubs for $375 in phoenix craigslist.
Thanks for looking!
Here she is in her un restored glory.

On the 67 Camaro the drives side tub has a gap that need a fill plate welded in since the 67 is the only year out of the 1st Gen without the staggered shock mounts.

Vince you are correct, Scott does have a AME in his 69' but has built his own C6 sub since then. He also updated his AME to be able to have the adjustablity which VRP subs have.

Hey thanks! It's been a while since I've done any of this stuff. Not bad for a RE broker. I'll be putting on 3m seam sealer this weekend. I'll post some pics after it's done.

Nice progress, you do excelent work.
So it's been a couple of weeks. Had lot's of parts on order and had a new baby girl named Giselle. Here's some pic's of what I've been up to. The ford 9 inch center is a Yukon aluminum bolt through unit with 370 gears, billet yoke and a Trac lock unit. The fuel cell is a ATL unit. It's their vintage racer unit with a custom top that has the flange set 3 inches down from the top so it doesn't hang down low below the rear of the car. I spent probably the last sub 100 degree weekend in the garage for the summer cutting out my new trunk pan and gas tank supports. :hammer: I also went full retard on a Auto Rad radiator core support and radiator set up. Dual fans, shroud, controller and close outs. Art Morrison just hit my visa for a subframe so that'll be on the way to Los Angles soon.
Next Tuesday I'm packing everything up and hauling it to LA to Starlite Garage in Torrance for a cage, Art Morrison front subframe, paint & body and finishing.

It's been a while since I updated. I've been spending lots of money on parts. Stop tech 14 inch brakes and Forgeline's from Frank at Prodigy are on the way. Here are some pictures of Jack and I mounting up the frame so we can start on the cage. In the coming months we'll have pictures of the fire wall, brake system, master cylinders, plumbed E brake for drifting, trans tunnel mod for T56, subframe conectors, Peterson ls7 oil tank system, dash mods for gauge pods and integrate a Racepak Iq3 into the center dash, door skins, body work and paint.
Frame is Art Morrison C6 with Zr1 hubs and splined sway bar. Thanks to Steve Rupp for the help and advise on the frame selection.
The car is at Starlite Garage in Torrance Ca. Owner of shop Jack Fields is my cousin. He's got the gold 67 we run at the RTTH's events up for sale so we need to get crackin on my car for next year. If you're in Torrance stop by and say hi to Jack and the guy's at Starlite garage. They're just west of Normandie off of Carson on the north side of the street. There are several other first gen Camaro's in there right now getting some wild builds done.

Hey Corey - Love your car, Dog. I upgraded my sway bar from AME as well. Went with the adjustable one as opposed to the splined version. What are your plans for headers? Tell you cuz I'll be dropping in to say hi one of these days. I heard there's some fun stuff going on over there!
Frank over at prodigy is working on a 2 inch set for ls that work with the am frame. check out his un fair build. perhaps we can do a group buy.

did you read my mind, im running that same ebrake on mine, lol. its ksport right? are you gonna run it on the same brake system or will you be running dual brake calipers on the rear to isolate rear braking?
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Hey thanks guys! The turning brake will be plumbed directly into the rear calipers. It's a pass through MC until it's acuated. I thought it would be fun to have on the car and would come in handy for tight auto cross's. Since I'm getting so much help from my cousin Jack @ Starlite Garage, I want this car to appeal to a large crowd of car guy's. Hopefully he will benefit when this car raises the eyebrows. Stay tuned for more cool stuff! My 14 inch stop techs and LS7 oil tank from Peterson should be done real soon!
If any of you are in Torrance stop by the shop and say hi. Ask for Jack and let him know Corey sent you!

Awesome project, awesome car!
Thanks guys! I've got the e brake kit coming from Kore3. Should be in route today. I'm going to have a truck load of parts to take to LA in a couple of weeks.
Our next step is to assemble the chassis and get the car on level ground. Then start on a cage. Jack is going to hand fab a tiger type cage for the car that will tie in from the front sub to the rear of the car. We're going to tie in the willwood pedal system/firewall & 3 master cylinder set up while the cage is constructed. We will take detailed pics as we move along.
Anyone have a good shape original trunk lid for a 1st gen in Socal or AZ?

I just ordered some e-brake cables from inline tube that are 67 GTO on the frame end and kore 3 at the wheels. Should be alot better than trying to adapt the Lokar stuff to work. I'll post up when I get them next week. They were about $75 a each but that is stainless.
I spent friday afternoon over at the shop fitting parts. Here's my progress. What do you guy's think about those brakes?
