I need a quick lesson about the different tremec transmissions. T5, tko, t56, ect, ect.... I think one of them shifts like a stick in a bucket of rocks and maybe another or the same but you can't shift hard and bang gears... And what's the best fit for a firebird/camaro convertable (extra bracing under the trans tunnel)

in my experience, the TKO is the sweetest shifting and usually the strongest for the amount of money you put into it. The T56 is usually the second strongest, second sweetest shifting, has the bonus of the extra gear, but is very large. The t5 is the least expensive, but generally the weakest, can't really comment on shift quality. The t5 and TKO are much more compact than the t56, in general you are going to have to mod the tunnel to fit a t56, but may be able to squeeze a tko or t5 in.

Having driven all three of them, the T-5 is the best shifting, but it is best left for smaller motors. Most are only rated to 225 ft/lbs torque with the V-8 models rated up to 300.
TKO and the T-56 are much stronger.

I put a TKO 600 in my 68 firebird convertible last year. No problems at all with fit, and the shifter feels good to me. This is a street car, 455, makes about 500 hp. Can't comment on the others, but I'm very happy with the TKO.

I would say give kiesler a call. I think they should be able to hook you up with all the info you need as well as prices.

I run a Rockland "Son of Tranzilla" T56 w/ a Hurst shifter (I'm old school like that) and I love it. Crisp, positive shifts, and it's plenty strong enough to handle 500 ft lbs in a 4-door wagon.
I'm not easy on it either...

Actually the new Magnum is the best shifting IMO.. It really is nice and a big improvement over the older T56.

keisler's prices will be higher than the others due to the fact that they lost their distributorship, which means they pay about 400 more from tremec. If you want the best customer service try American Powertrain 931-646-4836, their prices were the best last year when we put a TKO 600 in the chevelle.

As far as I know it's just a marketing tag. The TKO replaced the old TR3550.

The TKO was "Designed to be a replacement of the earlier model TR-3550, the TKO has been significantly upgraded, making it more robust, flexible and versatile. The TKO is ideal for high-performance racing applications."
I don't know this to be true, but I think somebody - maybe from TTC - told me that TKO stood for "Total Knock Out". Something about it being named that to align marketing, but then they never took advantage of it. Could be all BS.

The T56 is usually the second strongest, second sweetest shifting, has the bonus of the extra gear, but is very large, and very heavy. Uggh My back.

Keisler also offers the T45 RS which is a built up version of the T45 found in the 95 up stangs and cobras.
They are rated at 425 lbs tq and a very nice choice for us lower HP/Budget guys. Just a lil food for thought
