Well, its only been a couple of years that the carpet in the duster has been installed and the sun has already noticably faded it..the car has a few minor, minor leaks but its still enough that after a good storm it smells all mildewey too. So what do you think i should do?
I was looking into lizard skin for the floor pans, spraying the interior so 1) it covers the few seams of patch pannels 2) to insulate it all, and 3) maybe for some rust protection. But i wouldnt be installing carpet in the end, id just leave it be. Has anyone lizard skinned the top/interior side of their floor pans, with or without carpet in the end? is there a better product out there in your opinion than lizard skin?

Oh, and i think im going to install thru-floor subframe connectors and redo the rollcage a bit into a 6 point over summer before i do whatever to the floor, but thats kinda off topic i suppose.

If i am going to go this way (spray on materials, no carpet) i realize its going to be fairly permanant so i wanna get it right, and make sure it looks right. Thanks.

Lizard skin, truck bedliner (rhino, etc) all are pretty good on floors, just make sure you like the stick or slippery finish.
Most of those by themselfs will cut down on interior noise a bit, compared to bare floors, a nice set of thick rubber floormats will additionaly reduce the noise in the cabin.
I have some Jeep friends make sure they have a drain plug that helps for cleanup, not sure you care for that, but it's a consideration.

Try ceramic tile ....

For the trunk, maybe. But I'd go for hardwood for the interior. Then you can use use throw rugs.

thanks everyone for the suggestions but i think tile would weigh too much and crack and wood would warp with all the humidity..but seriously im just curious as to what product to use (rhino lining, lizard skin...) how they last, and how they look. ive tried doing a search for them but really havnt come up with anyone whose actually done it on the interior and not put carpet over it. thanks for any input!

No experience with lizard skin, but from what I have read, it is not in the same league as rhino or lineX for durability. The rhino is a little softer or grippier than the line X. LineX is a more hard plastic type surface. Either would last forever inside a car. Do whatever you are going to do to the floor before you have them sprayed, because both are a bitch to get off.

Thanks guys, i guess ill look into Rhino lining and Line-X then. I am planning on putting new subframe connectors through the floor and door bars for the roll cage, so i should be into the 10's in the quarter before i have to worry about touching the floor again...Thanks again, i guess i have to look into colo(?) and the kind of finish now(?)

I used to have a jeep that i had Rhine liner sprayed on the floors. It looked great and held up perfectly until the day I sold it nearly 4 years later. I also had it colored.

hey tim, next time you are down here i'll show you my dads work trucks, he has what you are looking for installed in both. Its the best thing you can install, water proof and fade resistant

My '05 Ranger has a vinyl floor covering instead of carpet.... I was thinking about using the same material for my Galaxie when I redo the interior.

Just a safety point if the car is ever raced at all.

Rhino lining and most of the other stuff will melt and drip on your butt IF you have a fire in your car. Just ask Sterling Marlin about using that cheap roll bar foam in his race versus the much more expensive dripless roll bar padding.

Hey Tim, did you ever find the alternative you were looking for?

I just found this thread from a search of Lizard Skin. I DVR'ed an episode of Trucks! where they used L.S. CI and SC. and it was pretty impressive. I was thinking of going carpet-less as well. Another benefit to the L.S. is that you can spray the it on the CI (ceramic insulator) on the underside of the roof. With the matting type deadners and insulation I am worried about them falling down on the top of the headliner. I know that mostly only occurs with the cheaper butyl stuff but with it sprayed you know it would never ever happen. For the floor I am sure that I will be doing at least the CI because of the header heat.

Tim, an organization I used to be with had Suburbans that had Rhino Liner on the floors. They stood up to austere environments such as desert sand and military boots going in and out, blunt objects being dropped, and temperatures into the 140's ambient. I can attest to Rhino Liner being tough enough to go to war with. I noticed it having a rubbery kind of finish. All that is needed to clean is to spray it down, a real weak dilution of Purple Power, and Armor All to make it pretty. With our cars you could just take out a body plug to let it drain.

BTW, (if you're still checking on this thread), what brand of carpet did you have? It wasn't ACC, was it?

Hey Johnny, Ive seen a lot of threads searching the web of people L.S'ing the roof, and i think thats the best product for the application. The carpet i have in the car now was just from Year One, and considering how much its been in the sun, its discolored fairly minimally. Personally, the fit of the carpet isnt too bad except by the trans tunnel and the gas pedal.

With having to modify the floor for the t56 and putting in new sub-frame connectors that go through the floor, im not certian how the stock carpet will fit, so ive began to look back into this matter...

As vintageracer brought up, my concern with using rhino liner or similar products would be its flammability. On Lizard Skins website, they have a testomonial that a steering column fire was contained in the interior of the car thanks to, as they stated, the flame resistance and insolation properties of L.S.. I know factory carpet and insulation, or rubber flooring has to be very flammable, but L.S.'s states that it is Class A fire rated. Im not planning on dropping heavy objects on my floor like you would a truck bed, but i dont want it to crack if i put all my weight on one spot. Im also concerned about the resistance to abrasive wear, although you can paint over it which would eliminate this problem. I tried calling to ask Lizard Skin my questions, but they were busy so ill try later.

...Just a quick update: Ill be starting to swap the t56 into the duster in a week, ive decided that the carpet and heater core box arent going back in. I figured that i will be using Herculiner for the floors, i believe its polyurethane, and shouldnt be any more flammable than normal paint. Ill put pictures up as soon as it goes on.

How about sod? The sun will make it greener instead of fading it.
