Can I use one brand of primer and spray another brand of base and clear on it? I'm getting ready to paint my 67 Fibrebird project, and I'm thinking about using House of Kolor primer with PPG base and clear.
Any information is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I've done the opposite and it worked fine. You'll more than likely be ok.

HOK primer is expensive. Why wouldn't you just use PPG's lineup of primers?
But to answer your question, yes it'll be fine.

I spoke with the paint supplier today about HOK primer and he did said that HOK primer is expensive and designed more for their top coat. He recommended U-poll or Valspar. PPG primer is about $360/gal vs. $200/gal for Valspar.

You should check out the SPI (southern polyurethane) primers. Good quality for a good price and free shipping if I remember right.

Pick the paint system you want and use the product from bottom to top, that way if there is a problem the company may warranty it. If you put down HOK primer and topcaot with PPG and for some reason you have a failure neither brand will back their product. Automotive paint is a system pick brand you like and use it!

I bought a gallon of U-Pol S2025 direct to metal 2k primer. The plan is to primer the car in U-pol, and top coat with PPG color coat and clear.
Do have another question though. I mixed the primer per instruction for primer sealer (4:1:1) but the paint came out in splatters with orange peels. I used a deVilbliss startingline primer gun with 1.7 mm tip. Should I thin it some more?

I have that gun also and I use to use it to spray primer with it and hated it!! You have to reduce it with acetone to get it to spray. It's not you, it's the gun. Toss it out and buy an Iwata LPH400. You'll be very happy with it. I use it to spray everything from primer to base and clear. Lays perfectly with out orange peel. Just make sure you detail the gun after each use.

At $400, that Iwata is WAY out of my budget. I'll try to thin it out some more.
Thanks.
