My Duster Had a vinyl top that was mostly rotted off... So I took it off the rest of the way. But under the top looked bad. So I sanded it down and masked it off... And with 2 $0.98 cans of flat white spray paint I now have a presentable car! Let me know what you think! And I'll post more pictures soon. You can see more of the whole car and my other projects on the thread in my signature.

Yeah... Mainly I didn't want it to rust... and the glue that held the old top on looked horrible! I don't plan to do much to this car... Just the disc swap and stuff so I can drive it everywhere, do fun stuff, and get to school and work. Have to save money for my other project.

Why? I've had just as good of results with walmarts' cheap paint as I have with the expensive ones. As long as I want a limited selection of colors.

Looks sharp!

Is that sanding dust, or over-spray on the hood..?

Over-spray. Not to bad an like you said it keeps it from getting to much worse. If you find that that doesn't hold up in the weather you might try Bumper Coater instead, either from Dupli-Color or SEM.
It would more than likely be in black though.

cause most of the cheap rattle can paint is always watered down, and requires more coats to get the coverage,

I did the same with a car. They wanted 600 bucks for a vinyl top, so I peeled off the pelt and used a roller to apply white rubber undercoat and some blue rust paint. Looks identical.

Ahhh! Thanks for the tip! I did notice that it wasn't covering very well. Mostly this was just an experiment. If I wanted it real nice I would have used one of my hvlp sprayguns or one of the Really! nice ones (Iwata, etc.) that I have access to at the shop.

If it doesn't hold up I'll just do it right with regular paint and a spraygun. This is My "flog-it" car... Drive it everywhere and beat on it like a rental! It doesn't have to look real pretty. That is why I'm building my other one.

You can get textured paint these days that would give you a vinyl type look and you can probably put it right over what you have done after 60 days just in case the paints aren't compatible chemically until it is fully cured.

Looks good and should keep the interior a lot cooler !

That is just it. I hate vinyl tops! haha. Thanks for the tip though. Might help someone else who is wanting to do something like this.
