OK, I know this will stir the pot here but............
I think Rob's comments are dead on. I know some here have not liked Hot Rod's opinions of Protouring. However, if the true hurts, then fix the problem. They have always been of the opinion that we are all show and no go, basically because for the most part I think they were right. I am sorry, but if your car is too nice to get wet, too slick of a paint job to drive, then why the hell did you build a car, why not just buy some art. It takes up much less space and easier to maintain. Suddenly, after five years, we are getting some recognition for actually driving the "Touring" cars. If we are very careful, we may actually live up to our name. I think it is great that the main stream media is paying attention to us. Now, in April, we have the chance to really step up, in their backyard and strut our stuff. We will have a golden chance to show everyone we are for real, and there to play. You know, I would love it if there were no trailered cars there actually. If you can not drive your car 50 miles, IMO, what good is it.
So, if you are in the LA area, please, do your part to support our/your hobby. Lets show everyone we are for real and are here to stay.
There will probably be at least one or two crazys that drive across the country too so, who wants to step up and carry the flag? I will promise one thing, if you drive more than 2000 miles on your trip out and home, you will become one of the true protouring RAT PACK. More on this later, but whether you drive in from LA or Lower Alabama, please, drive in.
See ya'll there.

Uhhhmmmm, Steve, I think you have beat on your car and wrenched (needed or not) on her enough to get a 1000 mile credit to your name! OK OK extra 500 for another engine as more power is always good!

Just wish I had a car even close to being done or enough time to drive out.

Well Bill I have the TA in Oxinard so it won't becoming accross America, but it sure as hell will be driven from Oxinard (maybe even a little hard JJ LOL) to make up for lost miles..

Bill is right though gang, lets put them all on notice this year and lay down some miles to our growing number of events.... We built them, now lets use them until the wheels fall off LOL...

x2..Albert.... Bill is dead on and many have built pieces of art..I for one have yet to beat on my car but just talking about this the other day that this was the year to get it out of the garage and blow off the dust and see what all that money invested can do....Things can get fixed..Why do we invest in the best pieces for speed and handling and only show them? No trailer Queens allowed..:machine:

All righty then !!

This is a call out .... lets hear it for Bill ( applause )

If its not driven, you might as well go buy a crying baby and a comfortable folding chair.

I'm about to enter my 3rd racing season. I put close to 5k on it last year alone, hrpt long hauler, RTTH 5, Motorstate challenge, several local racing events, ect ....

The car is still in primer, still has a big dent and I'm upgrading its driveability / performance prior to worrying about comfort and looks ............... Who's with us?

What are the dates in April. I'm running One Lap of America from April 30th-May 8th in the Charger... that would a trip though right. Drive from 3000 miles from NY to LA, then back Indiana for one week of racing in One Lap then back home to NY. Hell, that would be over 10,000 miles in a month on the old boy and ya know what... I'D DO IT IN A HEARTBEAT!

I can't say that I'll be going to anything in CA anytime soon since I'm in Alaska, but I did drive my mustang from El Cajon CA to Seattle. THe day I bought it I hit the road and three days later and 1400 miles I was in seattle to ship the car. Does this qualify for the Rat Pack? Granted it wasn't as beautiful as the cars I see here, but the drivetrain is the same and is now getting paint.

The lightbulb went on for myself when Bill and I were coming back from Nashville Goodguys about two years ago. We were towing my car (Posion Dart)back in Bill's trailor when all the sudden Kyle and Stacy come flying by us in their 69' Camaro heading back home to North Carolina. We looked at each other and said "that's what I'm talking about". Early that day, we had seen them thrash on their 69' Camaro in the autocross. Since then, Bill has finished the Charger, I bought Rupp's Fairlane, redone the suspension and we drove our cars w/ friends to Vegas and back. So, I have to agree w/ Bill, not only is it time to prove our cars, but to also showcase the vendors products that support our hobby.

We should create an award at the end of the year for the Pro-touring car/owner that attends a agreed minimum number of the qualifier events, drives more than X,XXX miles to at least one event and places the most miles on their car in that year.... Just a thought...

I was wondering the same thing, whats happening in April? And Mike, you drove that thing to Michigan, beat on it all weekend and drove it home,my absolute favorite ElCamino. Ron

I haven't even had the chance to really buff my car out and it is already getting road grime on it and paint nicks. I thought I might make a car show or 2 before I started to make it look driven but I can tell you that it is not going to happen.

The car will look as it looks and drive the way it drives and I am showing up to have fun. With so many other cars showing up to the events that aren't perfect or finished and then being let to participate for fun with my Vibe, I can only say to others,

GET YOU AND ANY CAR THERE AND HAVE FUN WITH EVERYONE :1st:

Thanks for that comment Ron. I have seen your Mustang get a thrashing too. I was working the start line in PF when you left your engine in the slalom. This is not a new concept to me. I have always driven all my builds and don't intend to stop now. After some further reading in the events section I saw what Bill is referring to as in RTTH's LA. Good deal. I can't make that event although I for one have been hoping the Power Tour would go back to the west coast to give me an excuse to make a cross country trek. Maxton is the 10th and 11th of April. And as bad as I hate to do it the Elky has to be trailered to that event. The rear gear and spool make it almost undrivable on the street. But I do intend to drive to Road America and Michigan once again. I hope to hookup with Bill and crew in Tn. for Road Am. I will already have 500 miles behind me when I get to Tn. When I first got the Elky road worthy in Sept. 08, I broke it in driving to the LSX Nationals. Over 2,300 mile round trip without a copilot. It has over 10,000 miles on the clock now. And I totally agree with Bill in encouraging all you guys to drive em and drive em hard. For me the trip to and from these events is at least as much fun as the events themselves.
See ya'll on the road.

You got a problem with flipflops? I hardly put shoes on from Spring to Winter. 'Course I'm a surfer and live at the beach.lol Where I live flipflops are standard daily wear for most everyone. But I am smart enough to put on leather boots when I weld. At least most of the time.lol

I haven't read the column yet, and I haven't finished reading this thread, but...

I am sorry, but if your car is too nice to get wet, too slick of a paint job to drive, then why the hell did you build a car, why not just buy some art.
This has been my cardinal rule when building and owning my cars... build it to drive, build it so I can (afford) to fix it when it breaks ('cause it will when I drive it), build it so I don't die because it gets a little nick/scratch/dent/road rash. That's why my car has mostly stock style components, that's why I've tried to use primarily OEM components (meaning not custom one-offs), and that's why I had it painted base/clear by Maaco for $1000. That last bit, having it painted at Maaco, has caused a lot of folks to roll their (virtual) eyes at me and call me things like cheap, redneck, idiot, chump... one of those guys had a cow when his kid's bicycle nicked his $5k paint job'd Chevelle. :nopity: But then again, that guy hardly ever drives his car.

My point, some of us have always lived/built/driven our cars like this. It's nothing new, and we don't care for those that won't, and we don't care if someone calls the lame trailer/show/garage queens exactly what they are. Lame is lame, plain and simple.

I think this a great idea, and I certainly hope all of it comes to fruition.

However...even if we got all 20,000 members to drive their cars out and beat the snot of them it wouldn't matter; Hot Rod would still tell us to bite it. You have a better chance of Osama Bin Laden admitting he was wrong before they will.

It's real simple....they didn't invent us, so we don't exist.

Tom Welch

Hell with 'em! we exist and have revitalized the custom, hotrod, musclecar industry. They know this, let them be pissed, or pissed on.

I am building my wagon to DRIVE not haul it behind something. While I don't drive it in the snow It is driven the other season of the year ( construction)
While I am not sure of taking it across the country as of now. I am slowly working on the reliability of her. This year I am concentrating on the suspension and brakes along with the body work. next is the engine.

I'm right behind you unless you are headed this way !!!

Heck I'll still probably be right behind you until I get an LS or the stock car engine and Accel DFI gets a super duper tune,
but I know I have more top end gearing so I know I can catch up no matter what!!!!

I can hardly wait for April to get here.

Road America here we come.:yum:
