View Full Version : Summit Legend 5 wheels - anybody using them?

Wow, good looking and super cheap - $135/ea! They even have tons of backspacing on their 17x8 (5.25"), just what I need for the rear. The front I'd be running a 17x8, 4.5" BS. 245/45 Nitto 555 tires on all 4 corners.

Anybody running them on their ride that wants to admit it? I've come to the conclusion that high dollar wheels are not an option for me in the near future.

I'm not but if you run those bs numbers your front wheel will have a deeper lip and look funny compared to the rear.

That's what fits according to my measurements. :dunno:

Would 3/4" really make that much of a difference visually?

I just ordered a set. It's hard to pass up that cost, and I wanted to upgrade from 14" rally 2's. Hope they work out.

I want to see if they suck or not... kinda hard to find that out if nobody has them yet.

I'm also wondering about the above post about different lip widths... 3/4" doesn't sound like that much, but it may look awful in person.

Heck, post pics now and when you have tires mounted and when they are on your car! :)

I'm interested to see if the stock picture for Summit is a true representation of the wheel, or if the center paint is lighter or darker in color.

Once we know the weight, perhaps TonyL can add to the sticky. I wonder about the Year1 wheels too. Although not real wild about there new 'interpretation' of the 2nd gen wheel, it's an affordable entry to get some 17"s for larger brakes.

I like them. I wouldn't be concerned about the different lip width. People run different sizes front/rear all the time.

Jasons72

Why not go with a 17x9 for the rear? you will keep the lip and can go with a wider tire. Be honest wouldn't you rather see a 275 :)

From what I can see about the 10% summit discount, Im guessing they discontinued that because they lowered there prices and any thing that is summit brand there selling at jobber(shop price) to the public or very, very, very close to jobber, that what i see when i look at my dealer catalog

Have any of you ordered the chrome version ? I'm really liking the way they look, but my truck stays outside and is never garaged, so I'm wondering how sturdy that chrome is.

I've got some cheap chrome steel wheels that always shine up and never rust from just being dirty, but they are chrome over steel rather than aluminum.

It seems like the old chromed Cragar S/S wheels need a lot of attention to stay good, for example you can't just leave them dirty or the chrome will start to pit and rust. Is this just the nature of chromed aluminum ?

I'm very tempted to get a set though, these wheels look great !

04-28-2010, 12:35 PM
A friend of mine on NastyZ28 gave me a heads up about them. Vision is the manufacturer of the Summit wheels. They offer a "141" Legend 5 in 15 & 17" and a "142" Legend 5 in 18 & 20".

Summit just added them to the catalog and have no accurate pictures up yet. I found the accurate pics by searching Vision wheels.

142

I like the revised mounting pad better, although I did like the previous lip. I'd like to see a set on a car before I shell out the cash for a set though.

rockytopper
04-29-2010, 07:31 AM
They may be available in 18 inch with either style. If you look on the Summit web site there are 18 inch gun metal legend wheels & there are also 18 inch gun metal with machined lip listed seperately.

04-29-2010, 08:45 AM
Nevermind when I went back and looked at the vision site and summit it looks like 18's that fit a chevy only come with machine lip. If you remove the 5 x 4 3/4 pattern from the query you get both to show up in 18 inch. My bad

Go to visionwheel.com where you'll find several different styles. Go to Legend 5 and there's the 141 smaller diameter and 142 larger diameter. Look near wheel specs and there's a few pictures of customer's cars with these rims. One is a Nickey '10 Camaro with the chrome 142s. Good luck!

The 142's look nice with the curved spokes. I'm worried about a 4.5"bs on an 8.5" wheel though up front. The other choice is 5.125, which seems a little much. Doesn't anyone do a 4.75 or 4.875?

Do you want Gunmetal?

5.25" bs will work on the front with an 8" wheel. I ran that on my old '68 Camaro.

And 6" of bs will work on a 9" wheel in the rear. You may have to ad a small spacer, but that's no biggie. Put a 275 or 285 tire on it.

If that's what you want, I'd get them.

I have been considering these wheels also. Last time I swung by Summit a couple of months ago I remember that they had the 141s on display and that they looked pretty nice in gunmetal.

But I haven't seen the 142 series wheels in person yet. I may swing by the store here in Reno and see if they have them on display. If so, I'll be happy to take some pics and post them here.

If they had the 142 series in a 17" wheel I'd be instantly sold - they look awesome. Now I'll have to consider going up to 18", which I wasn't planning on. But $150 for a 18" wheel that looks that nice is something that might make me change my mind.

Yup and yup.

The 2nd hole is for tire pressure sensors on newer cars apparently. I'm gonna fill it with an upside-down valve stem and call it good.

Thats going to look good with your low ride height! What backspace on the fronts clears an 8.5" ?

Jasons72
08-07-2010, 08:45 PM
I'm going with 5.125 up front and 6 in the rear (i think i should have gone with 5.75) but i can space it out. I'm going with Nitto 555s with a 245/40 up front so i will only have the tiniest overlap of tire on the rim and either a 255/45 or a 265/50 for the rear, not decided on that yet, do i go with a 27 inch tall tire or a 28.4 inch tall tire?

LS1NOVA

27 for sure, that 40 series on the front is short, it would look odd with a 28" on the back. How about Nitto NT05's?

I would go with them in a heartbeat but they don't have enough of a size selection, everything is shorter than what i am running in the rear right now and the car wouldn't look right if the wheel well wasn't filled as well in my opinion. If i went with anything larger up front i will probably run into clearance issues with the rear of the tire and the rear of the inner fender. Plus these tires will have to last me a while before i can afford a set of competition tires and wheels specific for racing.

How about a 275/40 on the back

Jasons72
08-09-2010, 09:42 PM
It would fit and i may even go with the 275's, but the NT-05's are too expensive right now, i'm 21, work full time making barely more than minimum wage and classes start back up this month so money is VERY tight lol. This is not a cheap hobby so its tough to make larger purchases and i've been waiting 6 years to get a different set of wheels than the rally's.

Specs on the Galaxie wheels:

Summit Legend 5 (142)
Gunmetal Centers
18 x 8.5
-6mm offset
5x4.5 BP
Clears C6 Z51 brakes all around with lots of clearance.

They only gripe I have about them is the center caps. They're very plain. The powder coating looks fine and the machining looks good too.

Hope this helps!

P.S. I ordered the 1st one seperate to make sure that it fit, and It arrived the very next day. The other three took three days to get to my house (because I ordered them on a Friday afternoon). So, shipping was very quick too.

The lip does not change with backspacing, the backspacing is machined away from the backside of the mounting flange. And i can tell you no way will you clear with 5.5" of backspacing unless you plan on the tire sitting below the wheel well opening, in all honesty if i had more like 6 3/8" of backspacing i could fit a 10 inch wide wheel. A quarter inch more backspacing would have been perfectly centered in the wheel well. I'm taking the rears to have the tires mounted tomorrow so i will post a pic.

There are a bunch of backspacing options. I'm running a little more backspacing than normal to be sure the tires will tuck when I drop it lower: 20mm offset front, 12 rear. The backspacing options is why I pulled the trigger. They should fit perfect for what I want to do.

I got my wheels in today. Summit shipped me some used ones, but after a phone call they were quick to fix their error so I give them credit for that. 17x8 in the front, 17x9 in the rear. Fronts rub in the inner fenders very slightly because I have too much caster, I think I can clearance the fenders with a BFH. I have Sumitomo 235-40 in the front and 275-40 in the rear. Wheels weigh in at ~26lbs.

Snapped some quick pics of them on my phone before leaving work. Iphones suck at taking pictures. Ill get some better pics weather permitting tomorrow.

They are made by Vision Wheels for Summit. Vision also sells them directly under the same Legend 5 name. You could try getting in touch with them directly. My guess though is if you want a set widened you'd have to send them to some other company to do so.....but I dont know that for sure. Let us know what you find out.

These are cast in china by the same company that has a TON of OEM contracts. I dont think you could widen these.

Anyways here are some better pics as promised, I would have gotten even better ones but my camera batteries were defective.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/01/008-1.jpg

AS you can see, the deep mounting pad means TONS of brake clearance, my brakes look tiny but they work well.

Just in case youre wondering the fronts are 17x8 with 4.5bs wearing a 235/40 and the rears are 17x9 with 5.0bs wearing a 275/40.

I got the Sumitomo HTRZIII tires for ~ $410 from tirerack.com and these wheels were $650 shipped from Summitracing.com. I work for the state so this fits my budget nicely ;)

I picked up a set of these a month or so back...just finally got around to mounting tires and doing a quick test fit. They look respectable and will fill in nice for the next year or so as I work out my suspension/brakes and decide on what wheels I'm going to run run long term. The fit is perfect as of now...new 2" drop DSE leafs and coils and Konis going on the car next free weekend I get...hopefully everything still clears then. I got these from a local Vision wholesaler (called Vision and they gave me his number) and I picked them up from him for $142/wheel, which included his freight to get them to his shop...considerable savings over Summit if anyone wants to try that route. Sorry for the crappy phone pics.

I cant even fit a regular socket in there LOL. If it stripped I would weld another nut on top of it, done it a few times. When I go to the 1LE front rotors I am going to get longer ARP 12mm or 1/2 inch studs that are about flush with the wheel, and get some longer open ended lug nuts. Same with the rear, im gonna head out here and start work on a Firebird rear posi setup I bought disc to disc, ill put longer studs in.

As far as the center caps, Vision has several options on their website, but when I ordered my wheels I was told most of them were not available yet. The cap is just so damn big, it looks awkward. Your car looks really good Woody. What size tires did you with on yours? Looks like you have even more side wall than I do. I didn't want to go too low profile on mine...just not fitting for my mullet machine.
