You really have to post a few more details in order to get somewhere- and what do you mean by "0" timing?
Is it dual 2" exhaust, or 2" primaries?

Ummmm..... What's the timing at? Set it to at least 10-12 initial. That should make a difference right away.

What? Hmmm.... That sounds odd. How's the idle? Set the timing up and see how it reacts. Or, really, see what it's at now. Then you can go from there. It really sounds like the timing is off though.

You say it's a crate 383. What company did you get it from? What cam is it? Can you give all the engine specs? Also, are you timing it before TDC? I hate to say it, but there's some real morons out there when it comes to engines, and I have no idea how they keep their jobs. Please give us all the engine specs and we'll get you a good answer.

I am not really suprised that you are having pinging problems. Iron heads, a fairly small cam and 10+ compression ratio.
I would baseline the engine with 8 deg BTDC with 30 deg Total timing all in by 2700RPM
When in doubt the carb should be running rich ~12-1 A/F ratio
The headers can help supress some pinging as they will get some of the heat out of the combstion chambers.
