The new gauges look great. I'm looking at those for my 67'. Was the install pretty simple?

Ours was a little different because we were replacing our existing digital dash, but even with that it is a straight forward install either way. I was actually recovering from hernia surgery and my son Sam did 95% of the install. Pretty good for a 15 year old. We're getting ready to do the same install on Debbie's wagon and I would think it will go very smooth since we have experience now. Always seems like a daunting task until you dive in...

It's a clean look thats for sure. Looks like he has learned a lot with your project and now he has a neat 67 of his own. I have been looking at his thread every once in a while to see updates on his car.
Did you use any type of fan controller on your duel fan setup? Do you have a problem with your fans both being on draining the battery during startup when the engine is already warm? (For example, if you shut the car down to get gas and turn the car back on, do your fans kick in as soon as you turn the key and drain the battery down to the point where the engine stuggles to start)

Sorry for the delayed response, we've been wrenching on Deb's wagon non-stop lately. When we did the LS swap we I decided to let the Mast controller activate the fans. The Mast harness is already set up with a relay, but since I already had multiple relays in place I just use the Mast wire to activate the ones I already had. Probably overkill but we definitely won't overload the circuit. The Derale fans have high and low settings, so right now the controller only turns both fans on low and then if needed we can turn them on high with toggles switches manually (never needed). Never had a problem with the fans draining things while starting the car either, I have a feeling the ECU doesn't energize them when the key is turned to start. Hope that clarifies things more than confuses them! Tom

It's been a while since any updates but rest assured we have been making constant improvements and using the car to the limit of my ability more often than not. Here's a few things recent.
Fuel tank straps
One of the most annoying things that has never been bad enough to make me do anything about has been the metal drum sound when we slam the deck lid. After doing some research we determined that it was the fuel tank straps without rubber insulators against the Rick’s tank. The last time we were down at Ridetech we noticed that they used 1” shrink tube around there straps and it looked great. So that’s exactly what we did. The sound is 90% gone and that’s pretty good for now but we’ll chase the rest soon enough.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/08/DSC07289-1.jpg
When we put the car together we planned on installing a passenger side mirror, but it didn’t have a mounting boss in the door and we were running too short on time and it never happened. Well now it finally has. I just got tired of backing into parking spots partially blind on that side of the car. I figured out where the mounting holes should be, drilled the holes then marked a small piece of 1/8 aluminum and tapped it
Just a mirror...
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/08/DSC07343-1.jpg
DSE 600 steering box
Here’s an upgrade I’ve wanted to do for a long time. We’ve been running the AGR 800 series box since we built the car with no real complaints but like I’ve said before, we believe in running “matched” parts as a complete system. Who am I kidding, we did it to shave the advertised six pounds off the front end. Turns out that the AGR box is a little lighter than stock and we only saved 5.4 pounds… But, it more than makes up for the weight of the passenger side mirror and cold air intake though. ;-) I also justified the cost by passing down the AGR box to Sam’s Chevelle build.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/08/DSC07361-1.jpg
I was too cheap to buy the ceramic coated box, so we just painted it with Duplicolor high temperature "cast iron"

Spectre cold air intake
We finally installed a Spectre cold air intake to draw some cool air into the engine. I had made a big list of individual parts we needed to make it all work, but then found out that they now have a kit for an LS swap into a 66/67 Chevelle (thanks to Mike Morrow at Spectre). When Mike Norris tuned the engine last fall he had said we were really hurting the power by having the small air cleaner draw from right behind the radiator. Now that we have thousands of miles on the LS in all kinds of weather we can see that to be factual. Obviously nothing is a direct fit with an LS swap but adapting the Spectre kit to work was no big deal. We did move our power steering reservoir out of the way and mount it to the rear of the air box. The only other thing was drilling holes for the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor and the -6 fitting for the PCV system to draw fresh air.

I just thought I would post a picture of our odometer after returning from driving the car to Nebraska for the Sand Hills Open Road Challenge. If we're doing nothing else, we have certainly put a lot of miles on the car since the end of May 2010. Now that the A/C is working it is that much better for long trip.

Well, I should have known not to brag about how many miles we have on the 66 (now over 18,000). On the way to Bob Bertelson's event in Northeastern Ohio last Thursday night I was trailering the wagon and Deb and Sam were following in the 66. A Semi in front of us lost his driveshaft, and being Dark and in traffic, Deb didn't see it. I think the pictures will give everyone a pretty good idea of what happened next. On the bright side, there is no body damage!

Thanks for the condolences everyone. I guess I should have said "at least nobody got hurt" but no body damage seemed like a pretty big deal too. :-) We also are in good hands with our insurance agent Alex LaRue and have been contacted by our insurance company American Modern a couple of times. We're working on an estimate right now to turn in to them. We also got pictures of the truck and the police report with the insurance information. The only iffy thing that I see is determining if there is any internal damage from aluminum or dirt from the side of the road. I just don't trust the integrity of the engine anymore. We'll see how the insurance company feels about opening it up. Sam has been working on pulling the engine and trans this weekend while I have been dumping time into the wagon's fuel tank so Deb and Sam can enjoy themselves at RTTH's without me. Blah!

Wow Tom, the last time I saw a trail of oil like that was behind the Cormaro.
Sorry to hear about this and hope you get everything back to the way it was. But if it is like all the times I have been through a problem like that the car just gets better.
Just ask Matt Altamore about our ride last December 1st when the engine went in mine. Then remember how much faster I was at the Motorstate and you only being a few tenth's of a second faster than me.
I can only believe that I will have to step up my game a whole lot more to keep up with the changes that will come from this. Some here are really feeling sorry for you, not tot say that I'm not, but damn I'm jealous that you get to have it paid for by someone else.

We have zero complaints with the flowmasters and the interior sound. It always surprises people how quiet it is when we run the road course. We could probably benefit from a better flowing complete exhaust system but for now it's just fine.

Nothing yet, I have been away doing National Guard stuff for a couple of weeks and before that was prepping the wagon so Deb, Sam and Kaytlin could take it to RTTH's. The engine is completely disconnected and ready to come out for inspection though. Hopefully we can finish up with insurance in the next week or so and get back on the road. The front crossmember was the initial impact location and suffered a substantial dent/gouge.

So, we still need to sort out the insurance deal, but for now we weren't willing to be done for the season. We borrowed Sam's 6.2 that already had all the machine work done. All we needed to do was install the Mast Motorsports cam and bolt the heads on. We'll still replace the frame eventually and need to replace the dented Rick's tank and a few other things. At this point we've bought a new rim, new rear brake pads, clutch and borrowed an oil pan. Sam and I took it for a quick spin last night and it seemed to go down the road fine and the engine felt powerful.

Kerry,
We put 300+ miles on the car over the weekend and really liked the feel of the clutch. Mostly I noticed the change of where the clutch engages but Deb said it was actually easier pedal effort than before. The old clutch still felt good and didn't slip, but wasn't engaging until the pedal was all the way out. This coming weekend we should really be able to put it through its paces at Day at the Strip and we'll let you know after that.

Here's an upgrade that slipped through the cracks since it was done right before Deb hit the driveshaft and all heck broke loose..
Old drilled and slotted rotors were worn out (cracking) and Hawk HP pads were paper thin so we upgraded to two piece rotors from Baer.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/10/DSC07590-1.jpg
New front rotors are 13.38" and old ones were 12.79"
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/10/DSC07576-1.jpg
Maybe not as sexy but very functional and a total weight savings on all four rotors of 6.8 pounds! :-)

Please provide some feedback and a comparison on feel and the grab with the new LS7 clutch. I still haven't decided what to do, but I'm interested if you like it better, as well, or less than the CF you replaced.
Also, if a new frame is needed, the Roadster Shop is just a phone call away!!!
Great to hear everything's back together!!
Kerry
Kerry,
We put 300+ miles on the car over the weekend and really liked the feel of the clutch.
Tom
Thanks Tom, Have fun!!

I had to click back all the way to page 1 - now I see why your are running z51 brackets - Upgrading your c5 based fronts... nice!
If you ever decide to get crazy - those spindles you have should fit 2006+ Z06 brakes and 2009+ ZR1 CF rotors and assemblies as well.

Hey Craig,
We've been thinking about upgrading brakes a little further for a while now. ZR1 CF stuff would be too cool. Not likely, but cool...

I watched the event last night with Nora (my 3.5 year old). I kept telling her that is Daddy's friend! She was impressed. It is pretty cool to watch something like that when I know quite a few of the folks competing.
I was actually more excited that Nora asked me what kind of car each car was. She would also want to know if every person on screen was my friend or not.

Sam and I went to Redi-Strip in Indy to pick up our frames today. We had them dipped in order to get all the gunk out before boxing them. Our winter plan is to install the ABC Performance mini-tub kit on both frames and the deep wheel tubs in his 67 and our 66. This upgrade might take a little longer than the winter though.

Doesn't everyone have 21 64-67 Chevelle parts cars? ;-)
Actually we sold the frame from Sam's first 67 four door and this current one came with his very solid Kansas car. I started shopping for a solid frame for the 66 and then realized we had a very nice one under a 65 four door from Oklahoma. A few slight differences, but is a direct bolt in and by the time we're done cutting and pasting nobody will no the difference. The numbers matching guys already roll their eyes at what we have done anyway...

Once it's all back together we plan to take it to Mike Norris and have him fine tune it a bit so we should see what kind of parasitic loss we get from the complete drivetrain. We'll also tune it based on our driving and intended use which will tone it down a bit also. Still should be an easy 50-75 HP improvement at the wheels though.

Finally knocked out some other projects so now we can concentrate on only a few and here is one of the bigger ones. After Deb hit the Semi-truck driveshaft we started looking for a replacement frame (which we ended up having under one of our parts cars). So, since the frame is going to be replaced we decided to use the ABC Performance frame narrowing/mini-tub kit along with their frame boxing plates for the middle section. Excellent products!

We're just using a cheap Harbor Freight electric grinder with quality American made cut-off wheels and it's working great. Although, I think I went through 6 cut-off wheels yesterday... We do have a plasma cutter, but the wheels just seemed like I could control them better. So far, so good!

Hey Chris, I think we can safely run a 12" wide wheel with the new setup, but it looks like we'll probably only go with 11" since that is what Vintage Wheel works offers. With that I was thinking of a 315 but we'll wait and see how the budget goes. We might end up with huge wheel wells and only 295's still....

Thanks Todd! Like all our projects, they are never done and we keep "improving" on them.
Right now we're running baseline DSE coilovers and will stick with their stuff including the lower differential mount but will probably upgrade those to double adjustables over the winter. From the figuring I have done it looks like we can get away without narrowing the rearend by just ordering the wheels with the back spacing required to make it work.

Hey Tom looks like you guys are making some nice progress. If you have any thoughts about widening your wheels instead of replacing them check out http://weldcraftwheels.com/index-1.html as Chris mentioned. I know a few people who have used them with really good results.
I had a really hard time picking a rear tire when I minitubed my 68. I wanted to run a BFG because of the way they support what we are doing, but they didn't offer anything wider than a 295 in a 19". In the 18" they jump from the 295 to the 335. I'd really like to see what sizes they plan to offer the new tire in. It would be nice if they offered a 315/35/18 as the current 315/30/18 offered by other companies is only 25.5" tall. I'm not sure if it would look right with the 275/35/18(25.7 tall) most guys are running up front.

We had kicked around the idea of widening the wheels using Weldcraft, but would need to cuts on each wheel to get the width we want and bring them in a little from the quarter panel lip so the cost just got a little out of hand. Maybe next winter we can widen our 11" wheels. :)
I know that AJ, the engineer that comes to events from BFG told us that the new tire would be available in 275, 295, 315, and 335 (18's) so we should be covered anyway we go...

No. It is a completely different tire. Look at coverage from Optima and check out Kyle Tucker's or Brian Finch's car for tread pattern. The tire has three grooves around the circumference and really wide outer tread blocks.

It's been a while since any picture updates but it's not due to lack of work on the car. No big items that we can just call complete, but a lot of progress in a lot of directions.
We're working on disassembling the old chassis and bolting old parts on it to just roll it out when the time comes. While the rearend is out we will have the axle tubes welded by someone with more skills than I. I will weld the swaybar brackets on and also weld in a -6 bung for a better vent. Then it will be powdercoated. This rear and Sam's are at the chemical dipper getting stripped right now.

Cool! The car keeps getting better and better!
Not to be a jackass but get some safety glasses on that girl! I've seen too many eye injuries to ever go without. Be safe!
Good point. We're normally really good about safety, but obviously she's ignoring the "shop rules".

Hey tell your Deb to talk to my Deb about actually working on the car, I can't get mine to get her hands dirty she just wants to be the driver LOL.

The old frame was obviously still usable since we did Charlotte Goodguys with it along with a local road ralley before that. Bottom line is that we just can't leave well enough alone.
You're on your own with your Deb! Just be thankful she lets you wrench and enjoys driving too.

Hey Tom, everything with your new frame is coming along great! Couple of questions.
You say that the ABC kit requires you to move the rear body mount. Can you explain or show pics of how that will work when bolting it back to the body? Is is detailed in the ABC directions?
I was looking at my 65' rearend yesterday and was wondering if we can narrow them. The control arms mount pretty close the end of the axle flange. I was thinking at most maybe an inch narrower? What are your thoughts on that?
Thanks,
Todd

Todd,
It's not in the ABC instructions (yet) but was explained pretty well by Tony and I will get a ton of pictures when we do the work.
I know what you mean about narrowing these rears. I am leaving mine alone and just changing the rear wheel back spacing, but on my son's 67 I think we're going to narrow it 1" per side. That is a little more doable with his rear because it is a 68-72 housing and already an inch wider than the 64-67 ones. The other thing is that the ABC kit comes with a weld on coilover bracket that goes on the inside of the original lower control arm mount so I think we can trim a little off of the original. We'll know more about that when we get to Sam's frame. I plan to run the DSE coilover lower mounts that came with their kit so nothing will change on our rear in the 66.
Did that help any? Reading back over it, it seems clear as mud... When the pictures come I think it will clear things up.

Thanks for the info. Are you going to use the ABC top coilover cross bar/mount? If so are you going to have to use longer/shorter coilovers for that? I was wondering about that also. Lots of pics would be great as you move forward! I'm very interested in what you are doing here. Keep up the good work:twothumbs

We are going to use the ABC coilover cross bar. We tacked it in for now, but once we test fit this under the body we will move it up at far as possilbe without touching the floor and tack it in there. Then we'll get an exact length for our new coilovers.
Thanks for the compliments, we love doing this kind of project, but time and money are always nipping at our heals.

After cutting the back body mounts off the back the only bad one was the drivers side kickout, or the second from the front. This work was done a while ago but I am kind of proud of the way it went so I thought I would post some pictures of it. What we did was tack a crossbar in with a pre-drilled starter hole dead center on where the body mount goes. Then used the proper size hole saw to cut it out. The rest is self explanatory. I should have shot a couple more pictures, but I get wrapped up in what I'm doing and forget.

After all the slicing and dicing was done and everything was solidly tacked in place we flipped the frame over to make it easier to weld on the bottom. I really got a kick out of it being our version of the Roadster Shop's ad of Chris and Lynda Jacobs 66 Chevelle. Maybe I was just stir crazy at the shop, but it still makes me chuckle.

Here's a good example of the ugly factory welds. I have been re-welding everything and with the help of the grinder making it all a little prettier.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/02/DSC08048_zps2e90d77b-1.jpg
Instead of using the bolt on brackets for the DSE rear anti-sway bar we fabricated these and welded them to the frame. I built four since Sam's frame will need the same thing. I don't even want to admit how long it took to make these, but find making the little stuff incredibly rewarding.

Tom, you have been an inspiration to us Chevelle owners. Thank you for taking the time to share and help. I know a project can be taxing enough, but you go above and beyond when you take the time to document, photograph and answer questions. You have a great attitude and on top of everything, you serve our country. Okay, enough of the build up as you know I am going to have a question for you after all that.
Instead of all the cutting, fabbing and welding, would it be better to purchase an aftermarket frame that already has the upgraded engineering? I made some inquiries about some upgrades on my frame and the fabricators said they would love to take my money, but I would be better off purchasing one of the frames already done from one of the aftermarket manufacturers. And if anyone is wondering, I don't work for or have any allegience to any of them. I was just wondering as you have become an authority in this area. Thanks again.

Bradley,
Thanks for the kind words! We really just have a passion for what we're doing and enjoy sharing and getting feedback from folks like you. Not that we've won a stack of trophies or anything, but to us it is much more rewarding to see a guy driving down the road who gives us a thumbs up, or follows us until we stop for fuel just so he can take pictures of the cars. But, make no mistake, we all get overwhelmed on occasion and on certain occasions I have been known to cuss and throw wrenches across the shop floor and even yell at the wife and kids for things that are really my fault... :)
Good question on buying or modifying a chassis. Sadly I don't have a solid answer for you. For us there was absolutely no way to buy an aftermarket chassis without getting a loan (or selling the house) so it was just not going to happen. With that said, it also goes along with what I said when we went from the hodgepodge of suspension parts to the complete DSE package. The right answer was to do it all in the beginning, but wasn't possible at the time.
I do believe the A-body frame is a great platform that works well in stock form with aftermarket parts and can be modified like we're doing now to gain even more performance. The only thing we haven't tackled yet is getting a fatter tire up front but I think Scott Mock (coolwelder) has that market cornered. As far as parts and labor to make significant upgrades I don't know and would be afraid to look at our hours as things move incredibly slow using the "learn as we go" method. Another aspect is the reward of the smallest fabricated thing we did being noticed by one guy out of a hundred that looks at the car. Makes it all worth while (I think...).

Old wheel tub cut out. Making that first cut was troubling considering that this car has all original floors, trunk, quarters, tubs, everything. Right or wrong, I manned up and hacked it out...
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/02/DSC08230_zpseab8320b-1.jpg
When Deb and I left the shop/garage last night I was on cloud nine with the first tub permanently tacked in place. I have a lot to learn about this kind of work and really need to make a better template for the drivers side before cutting. But, by the time I add a little metal to this one and cover everything with seam sealer and lizard skin it will look great. ;-)

18x11" 7.75" Back spacing. Going with a 335/30 which should have a 11.5" wheel, but it will have to do for now. We've been running the 295 on a 9.5" for a couple of years without trouble.
Our back spacing is a bit different than most since we're running a 68-72 rearend.

A 335 on the Chevelle is going to look great. Your car already looked like it had more tire under it because of the stance. This is going to dial it up a notch. I always talk down TT2 wheels and many of the copycats, but the VWW's are the exception. That is a great looking wheel, especially with flat caps.

My powder coater has promised me he would get it in and out quick.
Sorry about the poor quality of pictures, I misplaced my normal camera so have been using my old one and my cell phone.
First picture is for Ron Schwarz. Dimple die to save some weight!

Rearend freshly powder coated and ready for reassembly. When I painted it over ten years ago I used POR-15 and figured since it would not see much direct sunlight I didn't need to top coat it with something for UV protection. Wrong, it turned an ugly gray color before the car ever hit the streets. I then sealed it with "tie-coat" primer and did a poor job painting it gloss black. Figured this was a good time to chemically dip it, get the axle tubes professionally welded, weld on the anti-swaybar brackets, powder coat and replace the axle bearings and all the seals.

One of the final new things I think we need to buy for the winter project. The 2.5" Flowmaster kit served us well, but with the new Mast engine and added horsepower we figured this 3" stainless Magnaflow kit would flow a little better.

Quick update during this wonderful Easter Sunday at the firehouse. We have been working hard trying to get the Chevelle done in time for DSE's Southern Slam in just under three weeks. If it is not ready it won't be from a lack of trying for sure. We just need to be smart enough to know when to make the decision that we won't make it on the 66 so we can switch over to getting the wagon ready.
Right now we're finishing up some body stuff while we wait for the frame to come back from the powder coater. He promised very fast turn around so we're crossing our fingers for the middle of this week...
Some modifications need to be made to the body mounts where the inner tubs go. Keep in mind, we're learning new "skills" as we go...
We bought new mounts, but decided to use the old ones since they were in perfect shape and they were going to be cut on anyway.

Hey Emil, about a year ago I had hernia surgery and it has been a slow recovery to say the least. Until a couple of months ago it was painful getting up and down from a creeper. So, when we sold our 4x4 crawler/buggy thing we built we took that money and invested in a lift. Flat out awesome! Hopefully we can improve quality and capacity when we build the new shop.

Picked up the frame from the powder coater yesterday afternoon. We use Gale Enameling in Plainfield, Indiana. It's a one man show and he does mostly industrial stuff, but goes out of his way to make our stuff look amazing!

The frame back in the garage/shop with the rearend set in place last night. Sam should be over there right now assembling the rear suspension components. Note how clean the transmission is. Purple power cleaner, water and a scrub brush go a long way on greasy aluminum parts. Also changed the color of the differential cover to match a bunch of other components on the car.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/04/DSC06526_zpsa22dac5d-1.jpg
And the big excitement! Our new JRi/DSE double adjustable, remote canister shocks showed up last week. Whew, just in time for chassis assembly! We've been running with the old DSE base line non-adjustable shocks since putting the Chevelle on the road in 2010 with great results but now will have to be come smart on fine tuning them.

Hey Tom, everything looks great! Thanks for posting the pics on how that rear body mount gets moved. I noticed you didn't use or changed the upper shock mount from the one that comes with the kit. Can you explain why you did that or what led you to change that? You're using a stock length 68-72 12 bolt, right? For the shock mounts on the rearend housing did you keep the stock mount along with the DSE mount? Lastly, do you have to order special length shocks/coil overs after you do this since you changed the top shock location? I can't wait to see more pics! Everything you've posted will help me out a lot!
Thanks

Hey Michael, We do still have 20 or so 64-67 Chevelles, El Caminos and a wagon. Haven't picked any up in quite a while and the one we have are fairly well picked over, but if you need something let me know and I will take a look.

OK, here's a few pictures to update. Things are moving pretty fast now so I need to get better about updating the thread every night. Of course I forgot the camera at the shop last night...
So, we prepped the complete underside of the car by scrubbing it with Purple Power degreaser and water, then scrubbed it with red scotch brite pads and Ajax, rinsed it all again and finally used a waterborne wax and grease remover. We also used 80 grit to completely scuff all the bare steel for good adhesion. From there we spent what seemed like forever masking everything on the car and covering anything of value in the shop. Keep in mind that we have nearly no experience with this kind of work so we leaned on some buddies with paint and body experience along with doing research on the internet. Bottom line, we started with Souther Polyurethane's black Epoxy Primer waited over night and then seamed sealed everything new, waited again, spayed all the new metal with sound control Lizard Skin. After letting that dry for about a day and a half we painted the underside and the inside of the trunk with a single stage satin black. Deb and I have learned a ton and are thrilled with the result.
The chassis is nearly completely back together and should be mating up with the body later this afternoon. What are we, 8 days from DSE's Southern Slam? I think we can still make it...

im actually looking for a wierd rust repair part for my 64 el camino. should be the same on the chevelle...
the inner door pillar by the front on the drivers side on mine is rotted through from leaks around the spotlight. primarily the curve from the rocker panel to the dome light switch, from the kick panel to the outer fender. im figuring if i can find a cheap enough slid one, it would be a lot easier than trying to fabricate one.
my other thing id like to find is a decent spare frame to sandblast, seam weld, reinforce, paint, and slide under mine. i have a solid frame, just not the room to completely tear it out and do this. so id have to build and swap.
and the updates look good. ill say a prayer for you guys.

Todd,
I actually saw it and had planned to get back to it but of course ended up side tracked...
We did fabricate the upper shock mount slightly different than the one provided by ABC. I wanted to use the stock length DSE coilovers along with the bolt on lower mount on our 68-72 rearend (same mounts as a 64-67). To do that we needed to make sure we built the upper mount as high as possible. I talked to Tony at ABC and agreed that my plan was doable. The only change from the DSE coilovers is that we mounted ours at a slightly greater angle.
Hope that helps some.

Sorry Adam, no pictures yet. The three page punch list is shortening but still substantial. I had National Guard training Friday thru Sunday and am at the firehouse today for 24 hours. It's killing me! Deb, Sam and Kaytlin put in over eight hours on Saturday and really made some headway too.
The biggest hurdle I see is the exhaust. Since I don't have the ability to TIG up a custom stainless system I might have to do one in mild steel and have it coated later. Either way, the Magnaflow kit won't be a "direct fit" and time is running out...

Tom,
What's the difference in the 68-72 rear axle vs. the earlier one? I'm assuming width - is there a benefit to running the later axle?
You've got me wanting a 66-67 Chevelle! My brother always had Chevelle's so it's pretty natural anyway - he never had anything older than a 68 though. Are you still on track to make it this weekend? Surely you have to be getting close to fire up within the next day or two?

The only difference is that the 68-72 is 1/2" wider on each side. No advantage other than the later ones are slightly less expensive and if you're ordering wheels with custom backspacing it is no issue.
We're still planning on the making it with the 66, but I guess if we hit a major road block we'll thrash to get the wagon ready and just go and have a blast with the long roof. If we're not starting the 66 tomorrow afternoon it should be first thing Wednesday. Cross your fingers!

Thanks for the reply. I figured you were really busy trying to get this awesome car done!!! I would be doing the same if I was that close:twothumbs
Car is amazing and I hope to do my chassis this year. Your pictures will help a ton!
So far I've sourced a 67' El Camino frame along with a 68-72 12 bolt rearend like yours. I will have to cut a few inches off the back of the frame to fit it, but at least the main rails are already boxed:cheers:
Todd,
I actually saw it and had planned to get back to it but of course ended up side tracked...

Quick update since we are in the truck heading down to South Carolina with the 66 on the trailer and I have already burned up too many data minutes on my phone. Bottom line, with the help of Aaron Oberle (65_LS1_T56) the car is running and with the exception of a few minor adjustments ready to go. Aaron had planned to ride down to SC with us for the event, but as luck would have it he was in town for work and has been helping us since Wednesday around noon. Not to be over-dramatic, but there is no way we would have buttoned it up without him!
At 3:30 yesterday we had the car to Mike Norris for a quick dyno tune. It had yet to be started since the new program hadn't been loaded yet. Mike said it would be fine so we started it and backed it off the trailer. Mike proceeded to do a quick burnout in the sealcoat parking lot just to make me nervous. He's a card! We were keeping Mike from a dinner date with his wife, but he and Bruce Raymond bent over backwards to get us taken care of. Mike says there is more to be had, but it did make 500 HP and 495 Torque at the wheels and sounds mean.
We finally left our garage/shop at 9PM after getting packed up. Wow what a thrash!!!
Thanks for everyone's moral support!
Right now we're about 2:30 out from Kershaw, South Carolina. I'll update on the trip home.
Aaron and I.

Leaving the house. It rained in biblical proportions while we loaded the car. GRRRR I'll explain the dent later...

Ouch, not good on the dent. Just put a band-aid on it - it worked for Yancy!! :)
Glad you guys made it, though I'm sad I won't be there for its debut. My 10-day-old baby takes precedence (per my wife).
Good luck!!!

Well, we're on our way home from the DSE Southern Slam with smiles on our faces. The car worked incredibly well! We told ourselves we would really take it easy and just break in the new engine and get a feel for the stiffened frame, new shocks and wider wheels and tires. At one time I said I would only drive at 60% and another time I might have said 80% but that all might have gone out the window during the day. I will say that we never turned over 6300 rpm's and kept it under 123 mph... I drove two sessions and Sam drove three. It doesn't phase me at all to say he had a faster lap time than me.
With so many changes things could have easily been an absolute mess and taken most of the year to get sorted out but I am pleased to report that we got "lucky" and everything is working in harmony. Actually, so well that we're not sure what to start dialing in first. Probably just continue to run it until something really presents itself. Sam and I both agreed the car was super well balanced and everyone that rode with us said the same.
It's just seems unreal that just over two weeks ago we brought home the freshly powdercoated frame. What were we thinking!....
This is Sam coming in from a session. It really shows the width of the rear tires!

Congrats guys, she is a beautiful car. What were the major differences you can think of between the old setup and this one with relation to the wider rear tires? Did the car feel more solid going into the turns?

Tom you guys did an excellent job - the car looked great in person! I hoped for a ridealong sometime during the weekend but I know we were both busy! I'm stoked to hear that it was working so well (mine did too!). It was great to see you and Sam again. Y'all be careful going home!

Hey Emil, this statement really helped out a lot. I did some research after reading it and then most importantly tried it. It worked great! Thanks.
