I'm sorta ready to go, Tom. I've got a couple small things I want to do, but I could run as-is until the latest upgrades are done. Hope to see you and the family soon!

Here's a short video of the car (along with Sam and I) on the front stretch of Nashville Superspeedway. During the two morning sessions I just didn't feel comfortable really pushing the car or myself. When the timed laps came in the afternoon I dug up a bit more courage and improved my times and top speed substantially. Bottom line, we tied Stacy Tucker for tenth place for the whole event. Might just be a fluke, but the car feels great and we continue to have a lot of fun with it!

I don't think it is a fluke at all. You are racking up some seat time and getting the car dialed in. The car looked great in the AutoX and on the big track.

Cool video! Was looking at your album. Saw a few pics that scared me! What happened down below?
Sorry Aaron, almost missed your post somehow. I think you must be referring to the oil pan and filter pictures. Apparently coming off of the back straight at Nashville Super Speedway at full go and hitting the road course was a little tough on the crossmember, oil pan and the oil filter. Looks like the skid plate will be going back on soon...

HOLY COW! :seizure: That's some serious scraping! The passenger side of my front spoiler got scratched up on the bottom a bit during the transition from the bank to the flat but I had no idea you were hitting that much! Good thing it wasn't hitting any harder.

Agreed on the scrape damage, really severe. Good thing your using the Mast pan that tucks up nice behind the crossmember.

Yeah, it was pretty violent hitting that transition, but when I stuck my head down there to look it just looked like the back of the pan and crossmember but I missed the filter. I am going with a shorter filter and skid plate to solve it in the future. Good thing we didn't get many more laps....

Some bad news for the Farrington family Chevelle... Yesterday while running a local SCCA auto-x our hot oil pressure dropped to about 16psi and we developed a knock that sounds pretty low in the engine. Pretty much very similar to what happened to the big block last year at the Midwest Muscle Car Challenge. We'll start digging into it today and tomorrow and see what we find. No matter what we find, it's never a good time to throw money at what was just a huge expense... I'll post updates on what we find and the thrash to get it back on the road quick.
Of course after sending out a text message to a bunch of friends about our engine problems and looking for sympathy, we heard that Todd Gartshore from Baer Brakes had passed unexpectedly. Kind of put in perspective how small our engine problem really is.

Sorry to hear about the engine troubles. That really sucks.
I know what you mean about things being put into perspective. I am as guilty as anyone at getting caught up in this hobby. It seems like whenever I get a little too caught up something happens to ground me again. I was really sorry to hear about Todd. I met him a few years back at RTH. My brother-in-law and I had him laughing so hard at our old college stories....... He was a great guy.

Yeah, I probably only talked with him in person a dozen or so times and emailed back and forth a bunch more, but he was just an easy going guy that made everyone feel comfortable. He knew Deb and the kids by name and always asked about them. Tough to say you're going to miss a guy that you only talked to on occasion, but we're going to miss Todd!

Here's where we are now. Monday morning Sam and I went to the shop and started the engine to try to pin point the sound. No sound! Not a big deal, the same was true with the big block last year. We let it warm up for 20-30 minutes and the oil pressure went down, but not as far as when we were autocrossing it on Sunday. Still no sound even with a stethoscope. I called Mobil 1 to ask about viscosity breakdown and the characteristics of their oil. The clown on the phone was flat out rude and said there was no way I should have been running 5W-30 with the way we drive the car. Lesson learned, I have called a few other "experts" and they agree heavier is better in our case. Mobil 1 said 15W-50, my machinist said 10W-40, and Mast said 15W-40. I also called my engine machinist about the sound and he suggested changing the oil, taking it out and thrashing on it and see if we could find the noise. The thought of risking all kinds of engine catastrophe lead us to pulling the motor. As of last night it is on the stand and ready for disassembly. More to follow of course.

The only issue I've seen with the LS engines is occasional lifter pecking, I'm running Mobil 1 / 5-30 also, which I think I also will be upgrading to a heavier weight probably 10-40 because the oil pressure is so high on this engine. I'm so engine paranoid now, I don't know if I will ever really push this car to its limits. In the heat we are running I don't think 15-50 would be a problem, but in the winter I go back to the 5-30. The only reason I'm running the 5-30 is that Mark Steilow said, in GM's test they found it worked best, and that is what he was running.

Just the accusump and the Mast pan (which isn't what I would consider truly baffled. I've watched the oil pressure like a hawk even while going through long sweeping corners and it has stayed absolutely consistent.

It was good to teach Sam to use the stethoscope for engine stuff, but we really couldn't hear anything....

Yeah Yeah, just like you to sharp shoot me... Right before we started taking parts off we threw a couple of hospital blankets on the fenders and a fender cover over the core support. Dang, everyone is a critic. :smoke:

Ron,
We've been basically running off the same info as you, but after making a bunch of calls (and nobody saying the same thing) everyone agrees that a thicker oil is the right answer. We also need to get our oil cooler installed ASAP.

We pulled the pan off the motor and even though I missed it, Sam could feel a little slop in the #1 rod bearing. (He's turning out to be quite an asset) So, we pulled the cap and sure enough bad things were happening. It didn't quite spin, but it sure had clearanced itself. We stopped there and ran up to see our machinist to talk about options. He gave us a few so we shot home and disassembled it the rest of the way. To cut to the chase, we turned the crank .010/.010, upgraded to coated bearings, ARP rod bolts, and a GMPP high volume oil pump. Thanks to Danny Popp for the guidance in making it a high pressure pump also. True to his word, the machinist had all my parts and the crank ready in under 36 hours.
So, here's where we stand now on Sunday morning. The engine is pretty much back together and ready to drop back in. Sure we'll still have to bolt all the accessories on and mate the trans back up to it, but hopefully that will all be done this afternoon after we get some churchin'. Believe me, we need all the higher help we can get...
More to follow soon.

Just glad to see you got it before it did something ugly. I was telling Bill the other day, I have been building cars since I was 15, but I think I have learned more in past 3 years then I did in the 30 years prior. It seems our group of cars are now running in some uncharted territory, pushing our cars and parts to there to there absolute limits. Roadracing pushes parts to there absolute edge, brakes, rears ,transmissions, and especially engines. Oilling systems, coolers, pan design, things I've never given a second thought until recently, the bad part about working in this area is, one mistake and its catastophic failure.
I think the strength of the LS engines is also its weakness. The head design produces so much power with a minor cam swap, you better make sure the bottom end is ready for how much HP is coming its way. Good fasteners, oil cooler and some kind of trap doors in the oil pan are an absolute must for 30 minute sessions on a road course, 3 years (2 engines ago) I would have said you don't need that stuff, it will be fine.
Really glad you got it out, fixed, and back together so fast, and can continue to enjoy the rest of the season. Hope to see you and the family at RTTH. Ron

The motor went back in last week and we ran it for a few minutes before hooking everything back up. Much to our disgust it had what sounds like a valvetrain noise. Someone suggested checking out the pushrods because they are prone to bending and in fact four were very slightly bent so we ordered a full set. It was down to the wire on Thursday getting ready to leave for Columbus Goodguys of course. Finally got it back together and started it up. 63 PSI oil pressure cold, and no noise. Ran it for a little while and the noise came back. Took a spin around the block and the oil pressure was down to 21. Not cool considering we just installed the new GMPP oil pump. Now I'm thinking I may have some cam bearing problems that need to be addressed.
So bottom line, it sat in the shop all weekend while Deb drove the wagon on the GG auto-x. I guess Sam told Kyle (DSE) that I was crying myself to sleep Friday night so they pulled out the DSE 65 Chevelle for me to drive on Saturday. Very nice and more to follow on that next.

Tommy,
Sorry to hear about the problems, I for one certainly know you were not expecting this.
I'm sure everything will turn out ok in the end as you'll are quite a team.
PS - I still have that ZZ502 crate engine in the garage plus the ZZ572 that has not run yet for sale, in case you're getting the BBC urge again. LOL
tommycomfort
07-12-2011, 02:48 AM
Now that 502 is tempting, but I'll go ahead and stick with the LS for now. ;-) It will work out in the end, it's just always a bummer to throw more money at something that should have lasted...

I know I should be concentrating on getting the engine out and sorting out all the week links, but when we returned from Columbus the other night the power was out at the shop/garage and we couldn't work inside. So, that gave me a chance to take some pictures of our new parts. Although we've been happy with our hodgepodge of various suspension parts I've always said I thought that running a complete setup that is engineered to work together would be the way to go. So, we are now putting our money where our mouth is and pulled the trigger on the DSE parts. We're currently running their baseline coilovers and rear anti-swaybar so of course those aren't pictured. We had already made the decision to buy this "kit" before Kyle let me drive the 65 test car at Columbus Goodguys. If I can sort it out just half as well as that things runs (and continue to sort out my driving) we will be thrilled. Now I just have to be patient while we work on the engine before jumping into the suspension. Just couldn't wait to share the info with our PT friends!

Nope, not really a GMPP "LSX" block or crate motor, but just a 6.2L take out. I debated the definition of LSX for a while before going with the badge. I finally decided that to us, LS refers to a Gen. III or IV small block engine and X is the variable. What do you think of that logic?

I have real silver 66 SS tags in my tool box if that makes it any closer... But, the car started life as a 136 Malibu and that is where it will stay. At this point the only thing that could make it further from a real Malibu or SS is a tubular frame and you know we aren't going there any time soon.

Nope, not really a GMPP "LSX" block or crate motor, but just a 6.2L take out. I debated the definition of LSX for a while before going with the badge. I finally decided that to us, LS refers to a Gen. III or IV small block engine and X is the variable. What do you think of that logic?
Tom
Okay, I am not a LS guy so I was confused. I know they have the LSX shootout and I guess that just means LS anything.
I would probably do something like "LS 366" in the style of the old SS 396 emblem. But that is just me.

Alright, the other L92 needs cam bearings and now will need a few more things before putting it back together. So, I stumbled onto a very fair deal on ebay and here it is. A brand new GM L92 crate engine with zero miles on it. We'll put our Mast cam and LS3 intake in/on this one and then rebuild the other one for Sam's four door project. The only catch was that we needed to wait until my National Guard training was done to head to Atlanta, GA to pick it up.

We clearly could have tanked our old motor, installed new bearings and bought all the ARP bolts much cheaper than buying this, but now, when it's all said and done we have two all aluminum 6.2L LS motors. And, it was just in time for Sam's birthday... I did take the money he had been saving to help pay for the new engine. Does that make me a bad dad? LOL

Thanks Rod, I enjoyed talking cars and LS's with you also. We ended up driving to Murfreeboro, TN yesterday to pick up a Mast pan from Kerry (analyte) that he won't be using for a while. Today will be a long day getting the motor back in a started. Then drive it around tomorrow a little to do some break-in.

Sorry to see the LS family treating you like a red headed step child. Ha Ha That bearing damage sure looks like oil starvation. Once you lose a bearing, the block really needs all the passages cleaned out or you can tear up another set of bearings fast. The oil viscosity needed is really a by product of bearing clearance and internal leaks. Thicker is certainly not always better. It's what gives you the correct oil pressure, HOT.
I remember speaking with my engine builder about the LSX family. One comment that stood out was that he wasn't impressed with the oiling system which surprised me.

As usual it's been too long since an update, but here's where we stand now. After a slight oil pan emergency and having to make a Saturday day trip down to Mufreesboro, TN to pickup a replacement (thanks Kerry!) we got the motor installed and logged a quick 100 mile local cruise to help with break in. Then on Monday when our oil pan fittings arrived we plumbed our new oil cooler and wrapped up the rest of the loose ends. Bottom line, Sam and I wrapped it up and loaded it on the trailer about 7 PM and then drove home to drop him off and pick up Deb. Poor Sam had to start school on Thursday, so after spending the summer thrashing on our cars, he didn't get to attend this event.
I know, you're disappointed to hear that we trailered, but it was only to Columbia, MO where we linked up with the other "usual suspects" at a hotel. That crowd was; Bill Howell, Brian Finch, John Parsons, Brad Granger, David Sloan, Kyle Tucker, Tom McBride, Yancy Johns and Albert. We left the truck and trailer at the hotel and packed the Chevelle with tons of luggage and tools for the rest of the trip and away we went heading to Hastings, Nebraska. Although there were more trailers than guys actually driving their cars, it is always a blast to convoy with that group. The laughs and memories from these kinds of road trips are forever.
Here's how it went:
Monday - leave for Columbia, MO and get very little sleep in the hotel.
Tuesday - Head to Motorsports Park Hastings and get wrapped up in a three hour detour on the way. We did get to get some "parade" laps in before it got dark.
Wednesday - An abbreviated driving school, then driving with an instructor. I told the instructors that even though I have been on a few road courses to treat me like I know nothing. Also had some "power summit" meetings to discuss with Optima where our hobby is going.
Thursday - Road trip from Hastings to Arnold for the Sandhills Open Road Challenge (SORC). We also got registered, teched and the sponsor decals installed by the local high school kids. Great town and huge support for the event!
Friday - We skipped the 1/2 mile "drags" in order to run the actual Saturday course a few times and drive to North Platte for a 30 minute 10 minute oil change... Also spent some time going through the car making sure it was ready for the Open Road Challenge
Saturday - After a slight rain delay we were set to go on the 55 mile run in the 91 MPH average class. All I can say is that it was a blast and maintaining a 91 mph average was not a problem. Our max speed was 120 (max allowed for our class). After hanging out until almost 9PM we finally headed toward Hastings where a lot of our group left their trailers. We crashed at a track condo for the night thanks to our host George.
Sunday - It was full go heading back to Columbia to get the truck and trailer and then to Home. Long day and long week, but an absolute unbelievable time!
The car and engine did great and we're actually just a hair shy of putting 2000 miles on the car this trip. I would say that it is successfully broken in now. On the way from Hastings to Columbia we averaged 19.7 MPG at a high rate of speed...
I know these pictures won't do it justice but here's what we have.

We took the 66 and wagon to the Midwest MuscleCar Challenge last weekend and had an absolute blast. Saturday was crazy hot at Putnam Park road course and the autocross on Sunday was much more comfortable but threatened rain all day.
Looking back many pages of this build you might note that this is the first event we attended last year when we put the 66 on the road (Memorial day weekend last year). Also worth noting was that we spun a bearing in the big block at the same event. I guess that was the beginning of the real adventure... I was a little worried on Saturday after I came in from a long session in the heat of the day and the oil pressure was really low at idle, but after a few minutes of cool down all was well and it functioned fine the rest of the weekend.
Honestly, I am not too thrilled with my results but felt like I did learn a lot again and the car felt excellent. With all that said, the real reason to attend any of these events is the friendships and camaraderie with great people. I can't say enough good things about Mark and Jessie Bowler, Bill Neal from 10/10ths and all the other hard working folks that made this event happen!
No real exciting pictures, but here are a few nice ones that Bill Neal posted on the 10/10ths photobucket album.

Good question Kerry!
Sadly it doesn't have a great answer. I started the new engine off with Penzoil conventional 10W40 and also used it at the first oil change. Then went with Mobil 1 conventional 10W40 at a ten minute oil change place in Nebraska and we're now thinking about going with Royal Purple's extreme performance racing oil in 10W40 also. But it is fairly expensive so the jury is still out... I have learned that everyone has an opinion and they are all different.

Talked to an "engineer" at Mobil after the Heidt's event where I saw high oil temps, along with everyone else. My pressure too was low when coming off track. He suggested that I switch to their 0W40 Mobil 1 synthetic. I have done this and this seems to be less sensitive to temp/pressure problems and still has good cold start capabilities being a zero weight. Found it at Wallmart too.

Just an FYI Castrol 0 W 30 ( European Blend ) here. ( its said to have characteristics of a 40w oil )
Oil temp at Autobohn 298* Putnum 265* never had low oil pressure on or off track. 40 psi at idle after sessions.

I know this is Tom's build thread not an oil thread (maybe we should start one), but if the multi weight oils aren't cutting it, why not use a straight weight oil? It's not like we fire up our PT cars at 0530 and immediately start the mad dash to work in 30 degree weather.

The remainder of the DSE parts have finally been installed and seem to be functioning great. We really need a longer autocross and road course to fully evaluate it, but so far so good. Not too many pictures of the swap, first day the battery on the camera died, then on day two I couldn't find the camera. Ugh! The front splined bar is a thing of beauty. We ran the car at Goodguys Indy last weekend and had a blast! Between Deb in the wagon and me in the 66 we were able to give a lot of rides to our local friends and some new ones. I was still not able to break into the top 5, but a close sixth will have to do.
Class First Name Last Name Car Model Raw Time
SM Mark Rife 63 Chevy Corvette 44.046
SM Bryn Finch 71 Chevy Camaro 44.529
SM Pete/Deb Orlowski 66 Ford Cobra 45.373
SM Chris Jacobs 66 Chevy Chevelle 46.908
SM Brad Coomer 68 Chevy Camaro 47.057
SM Tom Farrington 64 Chevy Chevelle 47.541
Oh yeah, we also weighed the 66 at the Ridetech booth. 3,545 lbs is a lot less than we expected. 52.81% front and 47.19% without me in the car and only about 75% tank of fuel. With all the lizard skin, dynamat, custom backseat, etc. I thought we would be 3775 lbs or so. Bret Voelkel (ridetech) guessed 3550 lbs so he wins the prize. He also guessed the wagon at 3700 lbs and it actually weighed 3698 lbs. He's good!

Just a quick update from Run Thru The Hills. We had a blast in both the wagon and 66. I learned quite a bit on Friday from instructors Danny Popp, Todd Rumpke, and Brian Finch, but they were so busy jumping from car to car it was hard to put everything together. On Saturday Kyle Tucker hopped in for three consecutive laps (last three) and really helped a bunch. Sadly, two of those three laps I killed five cones each. Bottom line, we ended up 16th overall out of 80ish cars. I'm sure our drag and speed stop times were lousy though. By the time Sunday rolled around we were just exhausted and in "live to fight another day" mode. An amazing weekend for sure!

it was great to meet you and the family at the event. its really heartwarming to see a family like yours. especially in y line of work.
and the car just flat works. great to watch you out there.
and i want to build a wagon just like yours. just so, so cool.

Michael it was good to meet you too. It's always a good time to hang out with the people you see in the forums and finally get to meet in person. I'm glad the 66 appears to be working well, it sure is a blast to drive! The wagon is due for some upgrades this winter too. Still no engine plans, but all good things take time.

Thanks Craig, we're big fans of the Vette also. Although I think you would have more fun in a muscle car... Just take that G8 engine and shove it into a classic.
Tom - I'm really considering a 68-72 Nova - I've already got a c6 z51 package set of brakes and rotors to throw on it - heck the more I pull off the Vette the more I can swap onto it... lol.
As for the G8 - its staying - really makes a decent DD and it sounds damn good with the Corsa exhaust on it.
The issue with the Nova is lack of space - only have a 2 car garage and my HOA supposedly doesnt like non running cars hanging out in driveways....
I guess I could either tear out the rear wall of the garage and expand it - or build a bigger 'shed' in the back yard....

That's exactly the reason we sold our sub-division home and moved to ten acres in the country. We could have never had the 22 64-67 Chevelle parts cars in the old neighborhood....

Mast Motorsports was kind enough to invite us to hang out with them and have our car at their booth during the NMCA LSX shootout in Indy the weekend before last. The whole drag racing deal isn't our thing, but we enjoyed talked to a lot of people about our car and what we do with it. It was amazing how many people there were pro-touring types. The Mast guys were great to talk to also. Knowledgeable bunch of guys!

This should be a sticky at the top of every page since it is the most asked question we get. Here's the tire and wheel info:
Our wheels are 18x9.5" front and back. 6" backspacing in the rear (68-72 rearend housing so it is 1" wider than a 64-67) 6.5" BS in the front. If vintage wheel works offered a 9" wheel we would have gone with that and used a 6" or 5.75" backspacing because we do rub the tire on the anti-swaybar at full lock. The tires are 295/35-18 rear and 275/35-18 front.
Great build by the way. I am running SC&C uppers with cpp lower front control arms. How drastic was the change when you went with the DSE front end set up. Was it quite noticeable or more subtle. Considering this upgrade myself. Thanks.
I don't know that the difference in suspension setup was immediately noticeable, but we are still dialing in everything. It would be tough unless we went out and ran a road course and auto-x in the morning, made the swap at lunch and went back out in the afternoon. Just too many variables.

I don't know what to say about being able to win the GG's autocross in Charlotte. First, let me say that Mike Norris really REALLY made the L92 come alive when he dyno-tuned it. The recent suspension mods are working very well and the three laps of instruction Kyle Tucker gave me at Run Thru The Hills really sunk in. Oh yeah, our Chevelle must really like cold weather and the stars were aligned and I had my lucky hat on... :1st:

Nothing wrong with them numbers Tommy. Bout the same as the LS1 in my racecar, but it does not have that nice long flat torque curve you have.Horsepower is overrated on a road course. A good driver that can maintain momentum will often spank a car with twice the HP. I'm at VIR for a two day track event that starts tomorrow. This track makes a liar out of my momentum comment. When you hit the 4600' straight big power cars blow right by. You need to come drive this track. Quoting M.Steilow, "this is a big boy track."

Hi Tommy, the car just keeps getting faster and handling better everytime I see you out there. The numbers you have for the power really impress me as a lot better than I was expecting.
I thought I only had 300hp at the rear wheels and the few hundred # less in weight is what made us so close at the MMCC. I just added a new 3" exhaust and crossover pipe and could swear I gained 60 hp or more. It will be interesting to see how we both do in the future with more seat time and those small adjustments to the suspensions.
Congratulations on the GG win and photoshoot, it looked like it was fun from the backround.

You are ready enough. Just take it as it comes and don't push it.Know your limits. I had a 70 mph off today. Hit nothing. But I had a real close look at a tire wall. Simple mistake of overdriving the car. This one was too much throttle in the wrong place. Lesson learned and I got faster and smoother in that section as a result. You have plenty of good usable power for any road course I have seen. Sorry about that, another post that I just completely missed. Although DSE made us a very good deal on the rest of the parts that we didn't already have I would by no means say that sponsored us. Running the complete DSE setup was definitely a no brainer since they are at all the events we attend, help dial in the car anytime we need it and just generally treat everyone they meet like family. And, I had said it all along that running a complete setup from one manufacturer would have been our choice anyway. The ATS spindles worked great on both our 66 and 64 and the Currie stuff was awesome too, but we just had the chance to change and went for it. I think the car is sorted out better than it has ever been, but seat time has really been the biggest factor. Hope that makes our decision slightly clearer than mud...

It's been way too long since any updates. I'll be honest, not a whole lot going on, but we did send the accusump back to Canton for them to go through just to make sure the cylinder was still in good shape and the pressure switch and solenoid were functioning fine. All is well and it is back in the trunk working great.
Here's the biggie. At GG Charlotte we heard about Brian Finch's fire that had something to do with the fuel rail adapter fitting. So, we took a look at ours and it was wet with fuel. Then on the way home, Deb and Sam smelled fuel so we pulled over and it was slowly dripping. Short of just stopping until we could get another fitting we didn't have a lot of options so we wrapped it in a paper towel to help it evaporate before running all over the engine. We made it home without incident. Rest assured we had the pin out of the extinguisher and a bailout plan that listed what everyone was grabbing on their way out if we burst into flames....
Our solution; have our favorite machine shop TIG an -6 AN fitting on the end so we don't have to worry about it anymore.

Thanks guys, we're glad it didn't end in disaster too. I think the adapter fitting could be safely used if we just replace the damaged O-ring, but we won't be chancing it. Mast Motorsports also hooked us up with a couple more fuel rails to do one for Sam's LS and experiment with other options on the 66. Good Dudes!

Hey Tom,Instead of welding the AN6# fitting to the fuel rail.I would use a #6 nut & sleeve and flare the 3/8 stainless tube.Appling torque to the welded fitting could induce failure.I noticed one of my fitting's I welded starting to twist at the weldment area.ScottM.

Well, we've actually been trying to work out our event schedule for 2012. I think RTOS is pretty much a sure thing, but GG Nashville is iffy because of National Guard training.
So, here's what we came up with so far. A real bummer is not being able to make it to Midwest Muscle Car Challenge because of Kaytlin's graduation and open house, but Deb has explained my priorities to me pretty well... I'm afraid my National Guard stuff might get in the way of a few events, but what can I say when it provides great project money.

Feb 17-19 RTTA
March 22-24 The car will be setting inside on display for the Hotrod & Restoration show in Indy
April 6-8 Run To The Shore
May 4-6 Run To The Ole South
May 18-20 GoodGuys Nashville (Maybe, it is the same weekend of my National Guard drill)
June 7-9 Chevellabration (I'll only make Thursday and Friday due to having drill)
July 6-8 Goodguys Columbus
July 13-15 Motorstate
Sep 7-9 LS Fest (drill weekend, but trying to work out some sort of recruiting deal)
Sep 21-23 GoodGuys Indy
Sep 28-30 RTTH
Oct 13&14 A Day at the Strip
Oct 26-28 GoodGuys Charlotte

Are you guys bringing the wagon back to GG Columbus? I'm trying to convince my girlfriend to take an SCCA class with me so she can eventually autocross mine. She is very hands on with my project, but seeing your wife drive again would be some motivation for her to possibly drive.

Just a quick update on a parts change. Before making our trip to Run To The Alamo we swapped out our rear springs to some longer ones with a higher spring rate. Nothing wild, but should allow a little more travel. More updates about the event to follow.

Alright guys,
I know a lot of you have been following our build(s) for a long time and know that we aren't the best on the track, but not the worst and obviously getting better. Well, we finished in the top five at Run To The Alamo (actually top 3 of OUSCI eligible people) and that puts us in the running for an invite to the Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational. This year at OUSCI qualifiers the top five people are put up to get votes on Optima's facebook page in order to win the invite. So without beating around the bush anymore, I would like your votes! And your families votes! And anyone you might see at the parts store, grocery store, work, or just on the street!

Is that all you run for a cage? When you are autocrossing is thier any events they request a cage? i really dont want to run a cage but would like to run a harness and i like the idea of the removable bar. what did you use for tubing>> dom ? .120 wall? sorry for all the question.. but last one, would that pass tech at the dragstrip?

Hey Paul,
Yep, that is all we run. I don't know of any autocross events that require a cage and at this point the road course events we attend don't require a cage either since they are never designed to be fender to fender racing. I am sure the NHRA wouldn't approve of our harness bar, but that is not something we are concerned with. I'll do some research on what wall we used for the bar and let you know.

Tom,
I want to start to running in some events this summer and i am hoping to have my car back together for the april run. I have been shopping for harnesses and seat belts and wasnt sure what to go with. think i might go with a 3" lap belt. My motor is all apart waiting for a new set of forged pistons and the car isnt in paint yet..not looking good but i am still going balls to the wall tring to get it done. I cant wait to see your car in person and finally get to go to a event.

Here's a little work we've been doing to get the car ready for the Hotrod & Restoration show in Indy. If you've been following the thread for more than a few days you know the car is anything but a show car.
The wheel wells have been the gray color of lizard skin and have needed painting from the day we got it back from the body shop. So, semi-gloss black spray bomb and we're good to go...
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/DSC06377-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/DSC06375-1.jpg
A while back we painted the exhaust hi-temp black and used the hope method that it would last. It did last a few hundred miles, but soon cooked and washed off. So, I took the tailpipes off and asked my powder coater about ceramic coat black. $20 per foot just wasn't in the cards, but he said he had a flat black that was advertised to be good up to 800 degrees. He did both tailpipes for $30 and we consider that affordable!

We knocked out a couple things on our list before our last event (RTTS).
First was replacing our power steering reservoir with a used Woodward one that we found on ebay. It came from a well known Nascar team so it must be fast... It is actually designed to swirl the fluid to remove bubbles and cool it. So far so good!
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/04/DSC06532-1.jpg
Next was a little bigger job. We wanted to move our Canton Accusump pressure switch closer to the motor (accusump is in the trunk) and also needed to install the sensor for the oil temp gauge. So I fabricated this piece and had my machinist TIG it. It worked out excellent, but somehow I was too focused on the end result to realize there really is no constant oil flow for the temp sensor to work. That fix update will be coming soon.

Thanks guys, the Dakota Digital stuff is awesome. We actually just got the VHX setup for Deb's wagon too. We're putting it in a heavily worn dash insert to match the exterior of the car. Should be cool.
I definitely think the accusump is a worthy investment for any car that you plan to auto-x or use on a road course. Without spending huge money on road race oil pans or super cool dry sump set ups accusumps really fill the void especially on LS engines.
