View Full Version : Blue My Mind, 1972 Ford Maverick

I have been a street rodder forever. I have a nice 47 Ford coupe that the family and I love to take out and go to some shows. In 2008 my father and I drove the 13 hours in the 47 to Columbus for the Goodguys event. Needless to say I was blown away!! While walking through the Pro's Pick area and seeing all the cars up for the SMOTY award I really got charged up for a new project. Of course, I will never own a car that can compete on that level. My pockets are no where near that deep. Nor am I that talented of a builder.
So 2 months ago I picked up 1972 Maverick. This particular car lived life in Alabama until 1988. It then came to Connecticut and spent only 2 years being driven in the New England weather. In 1990 a friend of mine bought the car and put it in his garage. It never saw the light of day until I pulled it out in September!
So what I have here is a fairly rust free car that I can play with. It does have rot in the bottom of both quarter panels. Other that that it's all good news.
This will be a budget minded build. No big dollars here. I got the car free. I just aquired an 89 Mustang that I scavenged a great running 5.0 and the AOD out of. So far $0 investment! I also had a friend donate a 5 lug 8" rear with axles. I know some of you high tech. guys probably just rolled your eyes, but for the price invested I will stay with the 8". I just ordered the coil over front MII front end from Rod & Custom Motorsprts. It should be delivered this week.
So here is the plan,
Suspension:
I have already bought and installed the Rod & Custom coilover front end. I have acquired an 8" V8 Maverick rear that came without the center section. As luck would have it I found a newly rebuilt center section at a local swap meet in the fall. It had the 3.80 gears that i was looking for too. I am also planning on adding rear disc brakes soon. I have taken the rear springs apart, sand blasted them all individually and then painted them all. I picked up a set of 2" lowering blocks and have plans to install CalTracs as well. Right now the car is sitting on my scissor lift without any suspension at all.
Engine:
My Brother in law donated an 89 5.0 and it's AOD trans. It came out of a good running car. I pulled the motor completely apart to inspect it. Everything looked really good so it all went off to the machine shop. After getting tanked and checked out the guy determined that all the cylinder walls needed was a honing. He cut the crank by ten thousands, installed new bearings and freeze plugs for me. I picked everything up and started assembly. I installed the GT40P heads that I found all rebuilt, also installed the Ford Racing E cam. I also found a good deal on a Explorer GT40 intake. Going to keep the injection.
Body:
I plan on leaving the body fairly stock. The biggest exception to that would be changing the rear body panel to that of a 68 Shelby so it will accept the Shelby taillights. I plan on picking up a Grabber spoiler set as well as a Grabber hood. I am not sure yet if I will try to find a good steel one or buy Maverick Mans carbon fiber hood. Time will tell there. I already bought the billet grill for the car. I am also planning on changing out the stock side lights for the flush mount lights that Hagen Street Rods sells. My goal here is not to alter the cars look, only to enhance. Again, in my eyes.
Paint:
Paint has finally been decided on. I am going with a Ford Blue Met. with Ice Blue stripe. The paint scheme will be a cross between the Brazilian Mav. and a 70 Boss Mustang. I will be using all PPG products for this project. Top of the line everything. I am also going to be using the new Envirobase water system. I plan on clearing it with the PPG's Global D8152 Glamour Clear. Sanding it all down and then flow coating the whole thing.
Interior:
I am going to modify the dash and run aftermarket gauges. Still unsure on the final layout. My goal would be to run some of the newer quad gauges so that I can istall them in the stock location. If that doesn't work I will run the typical speedo and tach. in the stock location and then mount the other gauges in the dash angled toward the driver. I found a set of nice 90-91 Mustang GT seats. They are comfortable and have good support.
Wheels and tires:
I have no real idea on tires make or sizes yet. I am looking at Billet Specialties rims for the car. 17" front and 18" rears.
This car is being built for me to enjoy for a few years, then when my 8 year old daughter (Hot Rod Hannah) turns 16 it will be hers.
So follow along if you like....
Thanks,
Glenn

very cool. I like that it will eventually be you daughter's. I have always liked those mavericks. They are a great car to build. Light and ready to be modified for handling. Good luck with your project.

I like the lines of the Mavericks. You should paint the rear valence the same color as the stripe. I think that would look cool.

That looks like a Maverick Sprint! In which case you might want to think about restoring it as they are rare. Mavericks are fun little cars. Im still building mine little by little. Check out mmb.maverick.to and fordmaverick.com.

I have been all over both of those sites. I have scene you on there as well. It is in fact a Sprint! I know in the Maverick world they are held in high esteem. But for me it is just a 72 Maverick. I did offer it up to trade in the Mav. sites. If someone would swap me an equally clean shell they can save this one. Nobody jumped on the offer, so I am going to build it my way.
Thanks for all the compliments guys!!

Looks like Santa came early for me this year! The UPS man dropped off the nine boxes that braought me the entier Rod & Custom Motorsprts front end. Everything looks amazing!! Some very high quality welding on the front crossmember.
I also got the engine torn down yesterday. Things look good inside. I am gonna send it off to the machine shop for a it to be hot tanked, a little honing, new bearings installed. Then we will get it back and start assembly. I also just picked up a E303 cam to go along with the GT40P heads.
I am planning on cutting out the shock towers in the morning an start mocking up the crossmember.

I have had fun this weekend. It only took me a few hours to get the shock towers cut out. Boy I wish I had a plasma cutter. That would have been a twenty minute job! After getting all the spot welds drilled and everything ground down I was able to spray on a coat of SEM Weld Threw primer. I measured everything several times and then clamped the crossmember in place. After triple checking I tack welded it in place. Everything looks good!!
I am hoping to get a friend over this week. He is a proffesional certified welder. I am going to have him buzz in the rest of it with his welder. I only have a 110v Miller mig and don't want to have any problems down the road.
It was a good day in the garage!:twothumbs

If your glass is good you may want to cover it with cardboard or it will get all that grinding splatter embedded in it. My son's girlfriend has one those and we converted it over to 5-lug then put bullitt wheels on it what a differance

More progress today. A good friend is letting me borrow his rottisorie. I have it for 6 weeks. I better make good use of the time! Today I got it set up, which took a bit longer than I expected. Not easy to do by yourself. I think the car looks really solid under there. With a bit of elbow grease and some paint the underside should look good. I still need to pull the rear end in order to get the car to rotate further. I will do that during the week, then start the cleaning. I wonder if I should rent a steam cleaner to help with all the grease?? Any suggestions?? Other than a few gallons of wax and grease remover. I was thinking about oven cleaner, it is supposed to be a degreaser right??
Oh yeah, I almost forgot. I made a new front crossmember to clean up the engine compartment a little more. The big front crossmember isn't really needed as big anymore without the front strut arms going through it. Since I have installed the R&C front end. This is made of 2x2 square tubing. And before some start to question it's ability, I consulted with a friend that is a structural engineer. He thinks it should be fine in this situation.
6 weeks to go, and the count down begins.... tick tock...tick tock.....

I love Mavericks. There are very few left. I would through a EFI 5.0 and a OD trans. Put a sway bar and some good shocks and your daughter will have a great dependable car. Should even get good gas mileage.

4 hours in the garage today. The bottom of the car is coming along nicely! Really solid down there, especially for a early 70's Ford. Good thing this thing spent 19 years in a garage. I figure I have another 2 or 3 hours of prep work. Then I will metal prep it, 2 coats of epoxy and then 2 coats of a chassis black. Then off the rotosserie and back on jack stands.
tick tock......

Ok, so how exactly did you do that? Looking at my car, even if I mini tubbed it I wouldn't be able to get any bigger tire in there because of the rear spring placement. What else did you do to the suspension? If you have more pics of it please post them or email to me? That would be greatly appreciated!!
I love the look.

Hard to imagine when I was a stupid teenager we used to make fun of those. Of course in those days original muscle cars with relatively low mileage were available cheap. Turns out these have great potential. I always did like the looks of them, even Dad's 74 with the small 6 and 3 on the tree.

I got rid of the leaf springs and fabbed up a 94 model mustang setup using off the shelf performance parts for a 94 mustang..it became a tri angluated 4 link set up with coil overs ..and it wasnt that expensive just the mounts took time ..i am also fabbing up the same setup on the 69 fastback i am building you can see pics of that on here its a little more involved as i built my own chassis....but you will get the idea....if you want to go the easy way just buy an 8.8 rear end out of a 94/95 mustang(of course you will have to narrow it)as it will come with disc brakes and the mounting points already set up on the rear ..just center it under the car and mount up the control arms then you will know where the front mounts will be located.....
First off nice little mavrick. My buddy is going to be doing one soon (he hopes).
But may I ask, why such a tiny cam? I had one in my 92 fox and hated it. Of course I like a huge radical cam, but I did not like the performance of it at all. I had every bolt on to match it as well (5.0 performer upper and lower, 24 lb injectors and mass, z-T5, 3.73 etc...). But I guess the stock E7's could have killed it too. Just curious on the little cam.
Sweet ride though & will be watching :)

I ran a B-Cam in my '89 and really liked it. My car was stick shift though. Just as a reference, my motor had the following specs -
Stock block bored and honed w/ torque plates to 306ci (.030" over)
Align honed
Deck square w/ BHJ fixture
Reconditioned stock rods
SpeedPro Forged Pistons
Fully Balanced rotating assembly
Edelbrock Performer RPM Aluminum Heads machined to achieve 10:1
ARP fasteners thoughout
Melling Oil standard volume oil pump
Cloyes true-roller timing chain
1.6 Ratio 7/16" Stud Mount Roller Rocker Arms
Motorsports B303 Camshaft
Pioneer SFI Balancer
Edelbrock Performer Upper and Lower Intake Manifold
Edelbrock 70mm Throttle body and EGR Plate
C&L 76mm MAF - purple sample tube
Walbro 155lph
Motorsports 30lb/hr fuel injectors
BBK lonk tube Headers
Custom crossover pipe w/ Wideband O2 Bung
2 Chamber Flowmaster Mufflers
Here is what it made on both the engine dyno and chassis dyno.
The engine dyno runs were with a Holley 750.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/12/Dyno22028Medium29-1.jpg
These pulls were done when I had the SCT chip tuned. Not great numbers by any stretch, but for a motor that made 230hp at the crank stock, It though for the investment it did OK. It had a nice flat torque curve and was fun on the street. It ran low to mid 13's on street tires.

I have been a Chevy guy all my life. I love the Ford body styles, but always ran an SBC in them. This car is my first all Ford car. I am learning as I go. My brother in law built a Factory Five Cobra last year. I am going by the specs he put in his 302. I love the way his sounds and runs. He is running the E cam without any concerns or problems. I will put it in and if I decide I don't like it I will swap it out later on. My cars are all distance drivers, not racers. We think nothing of jumping in our hot rod and driving it 13 hours to Columbus for the GoodGuys show. I think it will be fine. If not, I will change it.

Cool! Not one you see everyday, that's for sure!
I have been a Chevy guy all my life.
I KNOW THAT'S RIGHT!!!!!!!
I have always liked mustangs, mavericks, & galaxies though. I have built several SBC S10's with my cusin, couple of turd gen camaro's, lots of c-10s 62-87.
I had a T5 in my 92 lx. AND yes E303 is a very good mechanically sound little cam without any mods to your valvetrain. It just was not enough grunt for my taste. Just rmember there is always a bigger stall converter :) and run some 3.23's or a gear vendor. Then you can have your cake and eat it too.
Oddly enough I sold that lx to my next door neighbor who turned it into a Factory Five Cobra as well. He has been working on it for about 2 years its in the go-cart stage/ body work. He stroked it to a 347 with a fat nasty Windsor cam too. He also fitted a dual in/ oulet X style dynomax muffler in front of the engine. It sounds totally different than any other Cobra. Take a look if you like.

I will have to remember that. We went in 2008. I am planning another trip in 2011. Can't go this coming year. This is a pic of my 47 that we take everywhere. It has been a very fun car. Who knows, by 2011 I hope to take both cars!! That would be fun.

Thanks for the compliment! The 47 is a great car, we love it.
Between yesterday and this morning I got the underside of the car all painted. I finished up the prep work and masked everything off. Wrapped plastic around the garage as well. I didn't want everything turning black.
I sprayed 2 coats of PPG's DP90LF epoxy. I let that sit over night, then this morning I went out and used 3M heavy body seam sealer and sealed up a bunch of seams that the factory should have. 30 minutes later I sprayed 2 coats of PPG's HSP-2128bk. It is a polyurathane primer that is in their "light industrial" line. Awesome stuff. It will dry to a rock hard, semi gloss finish. This will be the final finish. It does not need to be top coated. I know restoration shops that use this on suspension parts and radiator supports for a final finish.
I can't wait to let it cure up and get it off the rotissorie!

I sent a bunch of parts off to the sand blaster to get rid of nearly 40 years of crud. Blast
Techniques in South Windsor, Ct. did a great job for me. Included in the parts
bin was all the rear leaf springs. I took them all apart and had them blast the leaves individually.
The shock plates, two mount to the bottom of the springs and two mount to the bottom of the
car. I also threw in the front radiator support braces. These parts along with the rear end itself
went the same chassis black as I painted the bottom of the car. I painted the oil pan, timing
cover and harmonic balancer a gloss black. I am painting the engine black because I have not
chosen a color for the car and don't want anything to clash. I love having access to a spray booth!!
I spent several hours in the garage last weekend with my brother in law putting the 5.0 302 together.
By days end we had the crank, pistons, cam, timing chain and the heads assembled. I
painted the block and heads yesterday. Now that the timing cover and oil pan are painted
we can assemble those parts as well as the water pump. I still need to figure out what I am
going to do to the intake as far as a finish. I don't know whether to paint, or send them out
and have them coated, like an HPC coating? Still up in the air with that one.
Time to do a side job that pays so I can have some Maverick money! No more palying with the Maverick
for a bit. Now in the shop I have a 50ish Chevy pick up cab that I need to get done for a friend.

I haven't been able to do any work on the car lately. I have been busy doing a couple side jobs so that I can buy parts though.
In the last few weeks I have picked up a new aluminum radiator, new billet grill, new rear sway bar, 2" lowering block kit, got a good deal on a new March Perf. serp set for the 5.0, and a rear body panel from a 68 Mustang that will house the Shelby taillights.
This is a steel unit that, on a Mustang, replaces the stock rear body panel and on a Shelby eliminates the need for the fiberglass panel that goes over the steel panel. Of course it is made for a Mustang so there will be some fab work involved. But I think the Shelby lights will look much better than the stock Mav. taillights!
Pretty soon I will be back on the car:)
HotRod47
03-27-2010, 11:49 AM
I have finally finished a side job I was doing and was able to spend some quality therapy time in the garage working on the Mav. I purchased the new steel repo. tail panel that allows you to install Shelby taillights in a 67-68 Mustang. I new with just a bit of fabrication I could get this to fit nice rather than using a fiberglass one. One way or the other I would have to spend around the same money so I decided to go with the steel panel.
The part itself is made by Dynacorn. I purshased it from Mustangs Unlimited since their Manchester Ct. store is 3 towns over from me.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Here is the back of the car as I started..
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
After a little trimming I was able to get a better handle on how things were going to fit, Not bad!!
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Here I have the stock rear tail pan trimmed and sprayed some weld threw primer on the bare metal..
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Got the new panel tacked onto place..
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
On the sides is where most of the fab work came into play. The stock Mustang tail panel is concave where the Maverick is flat. So I had to cut, trim, slit the metal and hammer and dolly everything to where the transistions looked like it should have been Ford made.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
And here is how it is now. I have to finish up some of the welding along the bottom and a few other spots, but, all in all I think it fits and looks great.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
It feels good to have been able to work on the car again! It's been way too long..

well they are a pain with the spark plug angle... I bought a set of headers for my 66 mustang and two plugs on the drivers side are a problem... they make p headers for fox body mustangs but they aren't made to fit the older cars..
I may be wrong here, but because I am running the new front end in the car I believe I have the room for the Mustang shorty headers?

If you do then you will be fine with a p header from ford racing or even some long tube fox body headers like mac will work from what I have heard..

So it has occurred to me that I have not updated this in a long time, so here goes....
Engine assembly.....
Lately I have not made much progress on the Mav. Between work, side jobs to pay for the Mav. and doing a little work on my 47 I haven't been able to spend much time on the car itself.
What I have been doing lately is putting together my first engine build myself! I have had my brother in law guiding me through the process, but I have done everything myself, and it feels good. I have done engione work here and there before, but never a complete build. On this car I wamted to be able to say that I built the entire car. The only other thing I will have to farm out is the seat upholstery.
So here we have a 1989 Mustang 5.0. When it came out it was a really good clean strong running engine. It had 192k on the clock. But during disassembly we were quite impressed with how clean it was inside. It must have been a very nicely taken care of car. I did send the block and the crank out to be checked. The cylinders only needed to be honed, and the crank turned .10. I have added GT40P heads, an E cam and a 94-95 Cobra intake. I also picked up a March Serp. system for it.
The long block is all ready to go. The water pump and pulley set up are just mounted up to check it all out and see how everything fits together. I am now beginning to reget the Cobra intake as I am just now learning that the throttle body I have doesn't fit a 94-95 intake. Can you hear that sound..............that is the sound of more money flying out the door
Looks good I think so far though!!

Having installed the R&C front end and cut out the shock towers I was left with quite a mess in there. I did weld one of the included panels to fill the big gaping hole where the shock towers were. The problem I have with that, it has different bead rolls than what the factory has. Not only are they different shapes, they also go in different directions. They just don't look right to me.
So last week I stopped at a Fabrication shop and talked with the guys there. He says that if I get him good patterns he will make me perfect replacement panels for around $200. I spent some time today making patterns. I think they look good. I plan to bring them to the shop this week to be bent up for me. I will include pictures as the process rolls along.
I am basically replacing both sides from the firewall forward. Ok, so the patterns are all made up now. I cut off the old engine aprons completely today. Before I did so I welded a bar from side to side to keep the hood hinge mounts right where they belong. I also put a down tube to make sure it didn't in, out, up or down!
I spent a little time cleaning up the area. This week I am going to sand it all down, tape it up and spray a good epoxy on it all. I am hoping to have the new aprons back by weeks end. As soon as I do I will epoxy those as well. Then weld them in.

I got my panels back from the fab shop on Wednesday. Today I took a few hours fitting them. They did a great job and they look really good. But making a piece of steel that perfectly matches my poster board template was probably expecting too much. For the $200 I think they are perfect.
I had to assemble the nose of the car to make sure that everything was going back where it belonged. I didn't want to weld it all together to find later on that things didn't line up properly.
Tomorrow I am going to prime them as well as the crossmembers and frame rails with DP Epoxy. Then I will weld them all in place.

I just ordered a set of Cal-Trac bars and the rear disc brakes from Vintage Venom. I hope to have it all in my hands some time next week. I can't wait to get to a point soon where I can actually have a car with suspension in it! It's been since November last year when I pulled it all out.
I spent a bit of time Saturday getting everything sanded down and masked off. I got it all sprayed with black DP90LF, let dry for a few hours, then sprayed 3 nice heavy coats of DPS3057 primer surfacer. Looks good I think.
Things are happening....it's so exciting! I still have a long way to go, but when some of these mile stones happen it feels so good.

Today was a great day here...Christmas in September.
UPS dropped of the Cal-Tracs from Calvert Racing, then not 10 minutes later Fed-Ex pulled in with the rear disc brakes from Vintage Venom!!
I am beginning to think I should have named this project "Empty Pockets"!!
Lately I have sold some extra stuff on Ebay that has enabled me to buy a few things. I now have the whole front end in primer. I am going to paint the crossmember and frame rails soon so I can put the front suspension in the car finally. Now that I have the boxes that came today I will be able to put the rearend together and be able to put the car on the ground and make it roll!
I bought an IDIDIT tilt steering column for the car. So for the last few weeks that has been my focus. I had to fabricate a new column mount both at the dash and the floor. They came out nice. Because I am modifying the dash I didn't even try to make the stock mount work. I could have, bnut it would have put the column lower than I like. So instead I bent a piece of steel strap around the column, put two 90 degree bends in it, drilled a couple holes and it now mounts right where the two bolts that hold the brake pedal arm and the support are above the column. It really fits nice there. At the fire wall I took a piece of sheetmetal and cut it to shape where the stck column goes through and the foam seal are. I drilled the hole for the column, bolted the metal in place, slid the column through the hole and tack welded it in place. I have since removed the assembly and welded everything up nice.
A you can see in the pix I have made a lower dash extension. I don't really like the look of the stock shelf. I welded some threaded studs to the bottom of the dash, drilled the appropriet holes and can now just unbolt and remove it as needed. If you look you can see that I added a piece of exhaust tubing to "frame" the column. I think it gives a nice look to it and finishes it off. To the left of the column on the lower extension will be the wiper switch as well as the headlight switch. To the right will be the ingnition and the radio.
I have also been playing with ideas on where and how to mount the gauges. I am not sure what I want to do here.
Here are some pix for you.....thought I had pictures of the column on the computer but don't. I will take some tomorrow and update the post.

I recently purchased a new heater blower motor, and beacause I have finally chosen the color of the car I spent some time yesterday painting the motor. Today I finished the reassembly of the heater unit. Now I can put the sub assembly in the basement ready for the car to go to the final assembly stage.
I painted the heater motor because I will be painting the entire engine bay the body color. The color doesn't show it's true color in the pix, but close. This isn't the same color I was thinking of before. Similar, but different.
I love getting these little projects finished, feels like something is getting accomplished.

Here is what I have been spending most of my time on lately, the dash. Several things are going on here. Number one is that I like a clean looking dash. I grew up as a street rodder and always liked the look of a nice, smooth, clean and uncluttered dash. I don't really care for the factory Maverick shelf either, so I eliminated it. I got some steel bent up for a lower panel. It is now drilled for the new headlight and wiper switches on the left of the steering column cut out. On the right of the column will be the new ignition switch and the radio. As you can see on the dash I welded up the holes for the headlights and wiper as well as the ashtray. I was really really unsure of what to do with the gauge layout until I saw what a member on another forum did with his. Anyway, he made his out of fiberglass which may be the way to go. However I work with steel, so that's what I did. Here all the parts are down to bare metal waiting ntil tomorrow when I will epoxy them and then spray on a few coats of nice high build primer surfacer. Then the mud work! All in all I am really happy with the way it all came out.

Since my last update I have taken the dash parts to the booth for a coat of etch primer, followed by several coats of a high build epoxy primer. I let them sit for a week and then started block sanding everything. Then the mud work. They are now in a urethane primer and bolted back into the car. I think it all came out good.
You will notice in the dash that I welded up the headlight and wiper switches as well as the ash tray. They are now all smoothed off and looking clean. The lower panel is drilled for the headlights and wiper to the left of the column and the ignition and radio to the right.

Every time I look at the front of a Maverick I see the opening below the bumper and the valance. I really don't like it at all. Not a big fan of the turn signals either. I started thinking about what could be done here. One day on another forum I saw a pro touring 69 Camaro. It was a beautiful frontal picture from way down low. I loved the look of their front valance. The car owner had even changed the stock turn signal lights to driving lights. So $45 later on Ebay I bought a new repop front valance.
In these pics you can see where I have cut the ends of the Camaro valance off. I have it pinned in place to see how it looks. With minor tweaking and some filler panels where the white poster board is I think it will look really cool and unique.

Today is the first time since September of 2009 that my Maverick has had the sun shining on it! I made a dolly for the car to be able to make it mobile. It is now off the lift and able to roll around. I still have some bracing to do on it, and finish up some welding. But it was nice to push it outside and finally be able to stand back and have a look at it from a distance.
I have been working on making the rear Grabber spoiler taller. More of an aggressive look. As you can see in the pictures I have made progress on the rear spoiler. I am probably only 50% done. This was the easy part, now comes the tedious nit picky part, making them look right. The spoiler is a full 2" taller than the stock Grabber height.
You can also see on the front that I have had to suspend the progress on the front valence. Since I got boned by a seller on another board for five weeks waiting for a front bumper that didn't come. I need the bumper to make sure everything will fit nicely together.

Couldn't agree more. However I think the Shelbys are too wide for the Maverick body but that's probably a Euro/US taste issue. US cars have sometimes had monster wide taillights where we have been more conservative over here. Personally I'd like to try a 70-72 Camaro rear panel.

All I did was make a pattern of what I wanted out of poster board. It had all the right bends etc. One for each side as they are different. I then cut out the stock fender wells and brought them and the patterns to a fab shop near me. He bent up both sides for $200. They fit perfectly. I got the patch panels that come with the kit from R&C Motorsports. They don't fit well and the bead rolls differ greatly from the factory lines. They were a mess. This way makes a nice clear look.

Glenn, great work & I appreciate the dedication to your vision, no matter what the random nay-sayer chimes in with.
* I love the hood. maybe the letters "GT" in relief, showing the CF, just a hint of CF showing? I don't remember the exact grabber GT paint/decal layout.. just thinking out loud.
* Never make excuses for running an 8".... the 8" is stronger, lighter, & easier to service than the 8.8" & you have REAL axle retainers. 9" are overrated, overweight (big time) & 90% of the time unnecessary. The 8" has Currie, Moser, & Strange behind it.. all kinds of gear sets.. Aubrun Pro-differential will never let you down.. I love all 3 I have.
* The GT40p heads will give you head-aches. The port-configuration is not std ford small block. So unless someone makes a specific GT-P shortie/swap header... loosing battle. I you have reg GT40 heads available, they are better anyway. After that.. hell a well ported set of E7's from Patriot Performance will out flow the GT40p's.... The GT40p's were an Explorer V8 only head trying to add some life into a VERY restrictive engine compartment. The exhaust side revamp was to get as much flow through a crappy exhaust header/manifold location... simple truth.
* LOVE the tailight panel
* would like to see full size pics of the dash alterations... might give me some ideas for my King Cobra.
*promise us you won't do Bullitt/Torque-Thrust wheels! PLEASE DO NOT do that!... lol I think 17" Magnum 500's would look killer!

The early explorers had the regular GT 40 heads..half way through 97 they went to the P head.. Stock the P heads flow as good as the GT 40's.. headers can be an issue but like the OP said he has more room in his engine bay so he can use 5.0 mustang headers..either the ford racing ones made for it or maybe some 5.0 long tubes..

Thanks for all the input and comments on the car. I am having a blast with this project. Sadly right now it is on hold. I am in the middle of a couple side jobs. I need that money to continue on the Maverick. Non (well, very little) of the money spent on this car has come from our house bank account. It has all been paid for by doing side work.
Sometimes it's hard to be proud of things like an 8" rear when reading some of the other builds on here. I am doing what I can with the $$'s I have. I am not ashamed, just can't compete with some of the big dollar stuff.
The wheel of choice as of right now is Billet Specialties Vintec Dish rims, 17"and 18"ers. I like the classic, timeless look of them. I wouldn't mind Rushforths or something like that, but they are just way out of my price range.
I will post up better pictures of the dash over the weekend for you. I think it is clean and simple. I like being understated and subtle.

what I was referring to is that the actual Port configuration of the GT40p heads is NOT a std for small block pattern. Space in the engine compartment is not the issue at all. Its being sure to have the correct head flanges. I was referring to the engine compartment heing cramped in the Explorer.
I'll see if I can find a copy of the mega cylinder head comparrison from MM&FF or 5.0 mags.. I can't remeber who did the testing.
I am sure someone could adapt a set of GT40p head flanges to an aftermarket header set.

Sorry guess I'm slow or confused but I have had four different cars with GT40 P heads and 5.0 headers bolt right up...the only trouble you run into on some shorty headers is the drivers side spark plug boots touching the header...
I have a set of shorty hedmans on my 66 mustang right now.. Just modified the front two tubes on drivers side for wire/plug clearance..

Thank you very much for the compliment! The project has slowed down this summer for me. I have been collecting parts like crazy though. I sold my 47 Ford and my 55 Chevy wagon and ended up with the Drifwood Camaro. Now i can spend the winter concentrating on the Maverick.

Sadly no. I have been very busy with work and home life. I also took on a few side jobs, and without those I can't do anything to this car. Had a full redo on a 32 Ford roadster as well as a 70 Chevelle. Now that they are gone I have a couple touch ups to do on my "new" Camaro. Then, and I hope that to be soon, I can get back on the Maverick.
I have spent quite a bit of time collecting parts for it though. So it isn't like nothing is happening and the project has been forgotten. The new wheels and tires are on order and I am hoping to see them by the first of 2012, or a few days after. I also picked up a bunch of other things that will help to speed up the build once I can get some time on it. To me that is almost as important as anything else. I see guys building cars all the time that have the time to put into it, but run out of funds to put it together. So while I can't work on it right now, I am still collecting things.
Thanks for the interest!

I'm new to the forum and just read your whole build thread. I really like what you have done with the Maverick. The custom shock tower panels in the engine compartment look great. I love the dash changes, tail light panel, and the design of the hood. Excellent job!

Just wanted to add that you've done such a good job w/ the creative touches (and even more so the documenting of it) that I think we've all enjoyed following along on your progress. It's a good read for us fellow hot rodders! Even more so since it's on a non-mainstream platform like the maverick. We all like more of a good thing right?? Keep it up when you can Glenn. No worries!

It feels like it has been forever since I have updated this build thread. Not much on the car has changed in many ways, but my bank account is a lot lighter! It is a slow project building a car. I must take on side work to fund the hobby, but the side work gets in the way of building the car. It seems to be a never ending cycle I am stuck in.
I have been working on the Maverick, some. I didn't like the way the new front valance was working out for me. After some more thought, I scrapped it and started over. I am very happy with this new rendition. I still have some welding to do, but all in all I am really happy. I was majorly stoked when I saw Spoilers By Randy and his new Pro Touring 69 Camaro lower spoiler. It has the exact same design element as my rear spiller has. I love when a theme can be carried throughout a vehicle and be balanced. If you scroll back a page you will see the rear spoiler and see what I mean. Here are a few pictures of what I have done so far. I still have to fill in the square holes that were for the Camaro bumper mounting brackets.

I also finished up the gauge bezel that I was making. This entire thing is hand made from steel. I am not a big fan of the two gauge plastic bezel that the Mavericks had. I not have it mounted in the stock location with a full set of six gauges. Also in the panel is a indicator panel. In it are from left to right: left turn, Elec. fan, driving light, gear indicators, engine light, high beam, and right turn signal. I had this panel custom made to my specs. A beautiful piece as well.
as you can see I also finished getting the Ididit tilt column mounted as well as the lower dash panel that is drilled for the lights and wiper on the left and the ignition and radio on the right. The gauges and indicator panel are fromNew Vintage Gauges. Mark was excellent to deal with. Another vendor I highly recommend!

Here is a spray out of the final color choice. The engine compartment will be body colored as well, only it will be cleared with an egg shell finish, not hi gloss. I am going to use as the rending shows, the 70 mustang Boss stripe design. I think it will look good on the car.

Here is a picture to show what the seats will look like. This is not my seat, but it makes the point. I am using instead 1990 Mustang GT seats. But they will be black leather and have Houndsooth inserts. I love the classic muscle car looks of it. And no, this was not just used in Camaros. Porsche used Houndstooth in their 911's for several years

Here is the rendering that Mascol did for me. I love it! It really is exactly like what I had envisioned. I highly recommend his services.

I sold the Driftwood Camaro that I have pictured earlier in this thread. I really liked the car, but for some reason just could not fall in love with it. I hope the new owner is enjoying it. In its place is a 32 Ford three window coupe. This is a hot rod I have been dreaming of owning since I was 13 back in the early 80's. This is one of those cars that was at the top of my bucket list. Check!
I have some plans for the 32 over the winter, but for now I am having fun cruising in it.

Wow that rendering looks great, I bet anyone would be happy to have that. The car looks like a mix of a mustang at the back and the front looks like an early ford capri. The rims look great, you cant go wrong with 5 spoke style rims.

Very nice, good to see the project moving along. I like the rendering of the grill as well. Really compliments the valance/spoiler you have added. I also like the gauge cluster that you came up with and the other mods to the dash. I am wanting to do something similar. Are you going to put a cap on the dash or just fill in the holes?

I have a perfect dash pad now. I have thought about dyeing over to make it like new. Then I thought about having my upholstery guy wrap it in the same black leather that I am doing the rest of the interior in. And then I have thought about filling all the holes and making it one smooth hard dash and painting the entire thing. That would be a ton of work, but would look cool. I just can't decide which way to go.

OK, so it's time to get back on this thing. I have now finished all the side projects that I had lined up. The last 32 Ford coupe was delivered a couple weeks ago. I have cleared my schedule, much to the dismay of fellow hot rodders around here. Some guys are cool about it and are happy to see me get onto my project. While a couple are put off that I won't take their car on until next summer. Oh well.
Now with money in hand from these last couple jobs, I can really get to town on the Maverick. I have had the big brown truck rolling up my driveway quite a bit lately. Here is a small list of the items ordered and delivered.
First and foremost, a pair of NOS quarter panels!
New custom outside door handles from The Ring Brothers. See pictures....
A new Fuel Injection ready gas tank from Tanks Inc.
A new flip top gas filler from Alan Johnson Hot Rods. See picture, although it will be all polished and not nickel plated as shown.
The taillight sequencer for the Shelby taillights.
The new arm rests for the interior door panels.
New custom interior door handles.
Stainless steel door strikers.
In tank fuel pump.
So that's it for the last week or so. But there is still more I will be needing in the very near future.

Finally, back on my project. And it feels good!
So after clearing the shop of all the old projects for everyone else I am back on track working on the Maverick. In my last post I showed some of the parts I have been ordering. Well today it was time to actually get dirty. Yay!!
I bought a set of mirrors from Vision Hot Rods. They are a molded plastic/composite. I like the looks as they are a little bit more modern than the Maverick mirrors without looking too out of place. Today I got both side mounted. These are nice because they give you plenty of material on the stem to cut, trim and shape to your desired needs.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Here I have mounted the new gas cap/filler that I got from Alan Johnson Hot Rods. Investment cast Stainless Steel with a full polish. I just used a couple regular screws to mount it here, but I will use polished stainless for the screws when final mounting takes place.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
I bought new inside door handles as well. Today I got the passenger door mounted. Had to do some fab work, but it was worth it in the end. They look nice. Obviously the old door handle will be removed, just had not done it yet.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
I am also changing out the arm rests. I used these same ones in the interior of my 47 Ford a few years ago. I really like them. These are brand new reproduction 1957 Chevy arm rests from Danchuk.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
This is the end result of the arm rests and door handles installed. I am also going to be installing power windows, so the window crank will disappear soon as well.

Happy Thanksgiving!
With Thanksgiving in the rear view mirror I was able to get some good shop time in working on the Maverick project.
Now that I have both NOS quarters in my possession I was able to get going with that repair. I started by stripping the oem primer off of the insides to get them ready for a fresh couple coats of PPG DP90LF Epoxy. I also spent time rough cutting the driver side quarter off the car. Then I started to drill out all the spot welds. I ran into a problem when my Blair Cutter broke. I thought I had a spar, but didn't. So that is as far as I could get with that part of the project.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Before I started to melt out the factory lead I removed the factory headliner. Smart huh?! I don't need any fires. The seams looked really good.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Once that was done I went on and did a custom touch to the inside of the drivers door. I have already done the passenger door some time ago. I took the Ford script logo off of a pair of old Ford steel valve covers. Marked and cut out the top of the inside door frame. Then butt welded in the panel followed by a grinder to smooth the welds. When done and painted I was the script logo to show up, but be subtle. No hi lighting or anything. Just simple. I am actually hoping most people don't notice the change. Sometimes it's the subtle changes that are most fun. But the true "Ford guy" will know that it never came that way. I know I am not the first person to ever do this, but I really love the idea.

The last thing I did was shave the drip rails. Mine had a bit of rust that I wasn't sure how I wanted to fix. And I mean fix in as permanent way as possible. So in the end I decided to just shave them off completely. I did this by cutting out roughly 8" sections at a time, tack weld every inch or so, then cut another 8" section etc, etc. Once all welded I ground it all down carefully. It looks good. I then welded the shaped the base of the A pillar so it flows better. I didn't like the way it just stopped before.

I read through your thread. This is gonna be a killer ride in the end. I realized it was a Sprint from the stock paint & if Sprints ever become valued above 50K it wouldn't take much to bring it back to stock. It's not like you used it for parts & cut it up for scrap. I'm looking forward to seeing this completed.

I hear ya'..... I think the Pinto Sprints are neat but I'm not enamored with the baby blue & white paint so mine would probably be painted a deep metallic blue & have some other mods as well. I'm not a purist unless it's an extremely rare & valuable car like a Hemi Cuda' or GT500 & even then minor mods don't make it less of a car. I say build it to your tastes & worry about the concourse resto if it hits a million bucks & you wanna cash in.

Couldn't agree more. I used to have a 68 GTO that I bought from the original owner. It was numbers matching and I wanted to rod it but couldn't bring myself to so I sold it to a guy that pushed it into a field and left it. Thing I like about the Mav is even though it's a Grabber no one looks twice and wonders why you modded it (not that it's been modded yet).

Thank you all for the very positive feedback. It definitely helps with the motivation! There are some Maverick purists that think I am crazy for doing all this to a Sprint. I know they only made 15k of them and all, but I don't ever see this car going the way of a Shelby, COPO, Yenko etc. Yes I think it will gain in value as people realize they are cool cars. But I don't think the Sprint will ever become one of THOSE cars. Besides, I really don't like that factory color scheme.
I hope I don't disappoint you all. I am pretty sure I won't though.......

My '80 Pinto is 1 of only 2 known with it's option package & the other was used for parts & scrapped. That's not stopping me from making a ton of changes to it. Even fully restored it's not worth more than 10K so screw it. I was gonna start a build thread on it but compared to the major mods I'm seeing on this site my build now looks closer to a restoration. I decided to post my Stang since the only stock parts left are the floorpans, rear axle & front spindles & it fits the Pro Touring theme I wanted but I'm expecting flak since I didn't use vintage iron to build it.

I am trying to get some of the sub assemblies done so when it's time I can just start in with it, rather than having to wait for things to be assembled.
I have had the rear end housing in primer for quite some time. I thought it was a good time to get some color on it and the center section. I already have the disc brake brackets on the axles. So once this has cured I can assemble the entire rear end and make it a roller.

After spending several more hours getting the inside of the NOS quarters completely stripped it was time to get some epoxy on them. My plan had been to just put a couple coats of black DP90LF on them and be done. But, I decided now was the time to spray them body color since I had such easy access. So, two coats of the DP, followed by three coats of the PPG Envirobase waterborne base coat and then two coats of DC4000 clear. They look good. While in the booth I also sprayed the trunk drop offs. This all comes from my days in the collision industry where I learned to paint a part first, then install. Like a radiator support, paint it complete first, then weld it on. It is always easier to go back and touch something up than it is to paint the entire thing already welded to the car.

As this work week came to a close I had planned on spending the better part of the weekend in the garage working on the car. Then came Fridays school shooting here in Connecticut. As a parent of school age girls I was deeply affected by this. I had no will to go into the garage to work on the car. I instead spent the day watching the news listening to the coverage of the event.
This morning I made my way into the garage to get some work done. It was actually therapy getting out there to stop thinking about the last 48 hours and what had happened. I was able to tune it all out for a while and worked on the car. So once again, the title of this thread has proven to be true, Therapy Sessions. For some it means going to see and speak with a therapist, for me it clears my head to go and work on the car
Anyway, I started by emptying out the trunk. In a way it pains me to cut up this perfect floor. Not an ounce of rust anywhere here. But, I did buy a new gas tank from Tanks Inc. http://www.tanksinc.com, they don't make a replacement for the Maverick, but they do make a fuel injection ready drop in tank for an early Mustang. In order to install it though I would have to cut the floors.
This is what I started with:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Here is the gas tank form Tanks Inc. As I said it is fuel injection ready and is set up for a drop in fuel pump and fuel sender.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Here you can see where I have rough cut the floor and have set the tank in the hole. I am getting it leveled in here and centered.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
I started by making poster board templates of the panels I will need to have bent up in 18g steel. Here I have the front and rear panels made.

Here I have the sides made as well. It is all starting to come together. My plan this week with a sheet metal break bend the pieces for me. I am hoping to get them back by the weekend so I can get them installed and all welded together over the upcoming holiday break.

I also took the time to check the fit of the new reproduction drop offs. They fit great. I am going to wait to weld them in so I can make sure they fit up with the new quarters just right.
Thats it for this update......

I'm so sadden about the shooting x2. A couple of hours before that shooting, we had an police officer get killed here locally. She was a mother of 4 small kids. She and a partner was serving a drug warrant. I worked with this lady everyday for about 1 1/2 hears. I have not worked on my car all weekend. Thanks for posting. Maybe I will try starting back on my project too.

I am starting to finish up the trunk floor/ gas tank project. After making the templates I had a local fab shop bend up the panels in 20g steel. Last night I spent some time fitting them in the trunk. I then tack welded them together.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Once I had everything tacked I dropped in the tank to check for final fit.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Today I welded them together solid, ground the welds and then sprayed two coats of DP epoxy, after drying I then sprayed two coats of another PPG Commercial coatings product. That is the same product I used on the entire bottom of the car. Tomorrow I will weld the panel in the car and then touch up where the welds are.
Stay tuned for more pictures of all that.

I had shipped my window regulators to Nu-Relcs to be made as a power window regulator. This is not something they offer in their catalog yet, but they were willing to make them up for me. Now they will create a part number and begin to sell them. Last evening the big brown truck arrived with a nice box full of parts for the Maverick.
As you can see in the pictures Nu-Relics has done an amazing job of recreating our regulators for power windows. They look incredible.

Like I said before, are there cheaper options for the do it yourself? Sure. But for the money this is the way to go. All new parts, new wiring, wiring diagrams etc. Money well spent in my eyes.

I have now finally made the decision on the color combo for my car.
I do plan on putting stripes on it, but want something a little more subtle. While not completely ghost like, I like this better then silver or black against the main body color.
I hope you all like it! But if not, well thats ok, I do.

This is a really easy upgrade for the tank. The best part about it over the fuel cell is that you get your trunk back! I used a 16 gallon 65-68 tank. But the 69-72 are 22 gallon. Same basic dimensions other than it is not flat on top, it raises up for the additional fuel. So the bottom, and the side measurements all remain the same. I didn't go that route because I figure after two hours or so of cruising I am ready for a break anyway. So no need for the extra gas.

I went with a Ricks 22 gallon in mine. I had them center the filler neck also. I didnt like the tank be off sided. He was running a special on the 22. The 16 gallon would have cost about the same if not a little more. I have yet to top the tank off. LOL. My install looks a lot like yours except I made the tub a little deeper so that I could still have a flush floor.

Not a lot to report today. I spent most of the time in the garage cleaning up and getting organized a bit. Too much crap all over the place makes working out there difficult at times.
I did spend time looking into fitting the new throttle pedal and brake pedal assemblies that I bought from Lokar. I purchased the ones for the 69-70 Mustang in the Midnight series. The throttle pedal assembly is an absolute direct bolt in replacement of our stock Maverick gas pedal assembly.
For the brake pedal, all you have to do is remove the factory rubber pad, mark and then drill two 1/4" holes on the steel plate. Then bolt on the new pedal from Lokar. The entire process took no longer than 20 minutes.
The one big issue I could see is that you will need to use a Lokar throttle cable. And the hole for the cable may need to be redrill a little lower than the stock hole. The arm doesn't look to be as long. I am not positive about this as I wasn't ready to install the cable.

I spent some time yesterday, after cleaning up the garage, fitting the new quarter panel. I am not entirely happy yet. While it is nice having brand new sheet metal, there are some fitment issues to be worked out.
The biggest for me is the outer wheel house area and where it goes down and meets the drop off. I had fitted and spliced in metal from a 65-66 Mustang outer wheel house before. They fit well up to the after market skin that I had at the time. But the way they fit the skin and the way they fit the correct sheet metal isn't good. Looks like I may have to cut all that back out, fit the quarter to the car, and then refit the outer wheel house to the quarter. Did all that make sense? I hope so.
Never the less, it is nice seeing the car with a full panel once again!! So once again, one step forward, and two steps back! That should be the motto for this car. Wow.....

I have spent the majority of the weekend working on the hood and grill shell of a 32 Ford coupe I had done in October. The guy had yet to fit everything up so I was just getting to those parts. Having a long weekend helped me get the done and out of the way.
I wish I had been able to spend the four day weekend working on my car. I do have the outer wheel house area fixed and fitted to the quarter properly. I will post pictures at a later date of what was done to the outer wheel house.
While killing time between coats of primer on the 32 parts I played around with some fine line tape to get an idea of what I am going to do on the stripes of my car.
Here you can see I have a basic 70 Boss Mustang style stripe layout. Very similar to the Brazilian stripe, but it runs a little higher up the fender.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
For the hood I am again going to buck the trend and change the factory Grabber stripe. Here I have laid it out as a single stripe.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Here I did a separation, but not all the way down the center. So instead of being two separate stripes it is still one, but with less mass in the center. In this one the center point is rounded a bit....
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
And on this one the center comes to more of a point to try and match up what the very leading edge of the hood has.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
I am interested in some of your thoughts on the stripes? Anyone care to share their preference?

If going for a "It coulda been factory" type of look, you might want to make the front of the center section mirror the front of the hood. Visually, this repeats the line, and makes it looks like it belongs there.

The plan is to soften the outer corners of the stripe and then have the center section taper match them. So yes, I plan to have them parallel as much as possible.

I hope you dont mind me saying but Im having trouble seeing the Grabber hood stripe mating with the boss side stripe. I think it will end up looking like the hood came off another car. Im also not a fan of the boss hood stripe on the Grabber hood, (think Hotwheels Maverick Street Beast). It doesnt flow with the factory scoops. Now if you could play with how the stripe flows over the scoops and mold into the side stripes, it might look better.

No offense taken what so ever. I love good constructive dialog.
Here is what I am taking my ideas from. The big difference to me is that I want the stripe on the fender to go up a little higher like the way the Boss Mustang stripe does.
I do plan on putting some lettering/logo at the top of the the stripe. But still very up in the air as to what. This car has the "302 V-8", personally not a fan of that. Don't know that I want to put "Boss", since it isn't one. I think that my planning on the rest of the car has come to me pretty straight forward and easily. But for some reason I am struggling with this so much it hurts.

I also love something completely off the wall like this. The problem is getting it to look right with the Grabber hood. I have wasted three rolls of fine line tape playing with it. And and the Grabber hood really throws everything I try way off.

The carbon fiber Hood scoops look a little bigger than the factory Hood. Is this true? That may be why the stripes are more difficult. Maybe my eyes are getting older too.

No they are the same. The big difference is that the scoops are part of the hood and not a bolt on. The grey car above is a carbon hood as well.

Have you ever had a carbon fiber hood before?
On my DD Evo I had a seibon brand cf hood (with the uv "protection"). I always parked inside the garage, at work or at home. but when I switched departments at work, my new location didn't have a garage and I had to park outside during the day. within a month i would get that white stuff on the hood. I could polish and buff it out and a month later it would be back. I wouldn't leave areas exposed of the cf w/o paint again. looks cool and all but just not practical in my opinion.
I met a guy at a car meet that had a cf roof that he covered with cf style vinyl for that reason.

I've seen them "go away", yes. I thought good automotive clearcoat put on nice and thick would provide most all of the protection needed...??
Some higher end waxes are supposed to protect as well?
I think some research should come up with a viable soloution...not to mention this car isn't going to be left outside a bunch...

So I started this weekends adventure by making this little patch. For some reason on Mavericks this seems to be a very common rust area? Right at the bottom of the door jamb, Odd place if you ask me.

With the welds ground down.....

New extension for the bottom of the wheel house.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
I ground all the welds and prepped them for a two coats of DP90 epoxy. But before I did the epoxy I like to do a quick sand blast of the welds to make sure all the contamination id gone.

While my wife and two daughters went out shopping yesterday I was able to get a nice 6 hour therapy session in the garage. And what a session it was!
The Good....
I started off by rough cutting the old quarter panel off the car, then one by one drilling out all the spot welds.
Here is what I started with:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
With the old quarter completely cut off and all welds ground smooth:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Test fit the trunk floor drop off:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Just like the driver side I had to replace the lip of the outer wheel house. I again used the lip from the skins I had purchased a long time ago and decided not to use. An expensive way to get nice fitting outer wheel houses for sure. But since I had them and had already decided to go with NOS quarters, well mine as well use them.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
I then sanded everything down on the inner structure and primed it all with two coats of PPG's PD90LF epoxy primer.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Getting ready to final weld the quarter in place.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Fully welded.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Day two, Sunday morning:
All of that done I decided to grind off the passenger door skin. I was shocked how little primer the door had on the inside and how much rust there was. I am so thankful for having a pair of NOS door skins. I would have hated to fix the pin holes this door has, only to have it rust threw in another spot shorty after finishing the car.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
And now the bad......
With the door skin out of the way I decided now would be a good time to slide one of the power window regulators in place to show you all how it mounts and fits in the car. And it doesn't fit:cry:
The motor hits the bottom of the door. Because of that it will not allow me to swing into place and install all the mounting bolts. Before putting power to it and seeing if the motor will then swing out of the way I figured I should shoot Nu_Relics and email with pictures and see what they think. I don't want to do something and then have them tell me I voided any warranty. Here are a couple pictures to show you whats up. Once I hear back from them I will update you all.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

So this weekend I had planned on drilling out all the spot welds and taking off the cowl to check for and repair any rust. Now that I have learned how bad some of the hidden areas are I just don't want to leave that area for chance. In order to do the cowl though everything on the front end had to come off, and that's where I got side tracked......
With the my custom made front valance in hand I realized two things, 1, I never finished welding it all together. 2, I still didn't like the way it fit the car. So, I bolted it down onto a work table and started cutting and reftting the front leading edge. Much happier with that I welded it solid as well as welding up the two square holes that were still there for the Camaro bumper bracket access.
Here is where I started the day.....
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
This is after all the fab work and final welding was done. Checking here one last time for fit.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Before taking things completely apart I also decided now was a good time to check the fit of the radiator.....
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
VERY glad that when I made that new crossmember I put that drop in it for clearance. I did it not knowing if I would need it, just to make sure. Wow, something went right the first time. That lower radiator hose would never have had clearance had I not done that.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
I started taking the nose off. I am going to make a new radiator support. The green taper is where I will be able to fill in on the side of the radiator and close up the opening.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
At this point I knew I was never going to get the cowl off. I hate starting something and not being able to finish it, so....
The other day I had dragged my rear bumper down from storage. Today seemed like as good a day as any to check fit. Not good. Time for a little tucking and fitting.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Here is the overhang on the passenger side.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
After some cutting and welding I was able to get this:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
The bumpers are not show car tight. But for a really nice driver I am much happier with how they fit now. Now both bumpers are off the car and all brackets have been removed it is time to send them off for chrome!
Until next week......

Like I said in previous posts, I have been a little shocked by all the hidden surface rust on this car. Not only that it existed, that wasn't a surprise, I was shocked at the extent of it. This was a southern, mostly rust free car. So I decided I had better take the cowl off and have a look. Better safe than sorry, right?
So this morning I went out to the garage and started drilling out the over abundance of spot welds.
First, here is my starting point:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
I did cut out the vents first just to have a quick look, not bad in there. I was pleasantly surprised.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Here I finally have the entire panel off. Very happy with the condition in there. Just some light surface rust, nothing too difficult to deal with.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
And the inside of the cowl panel itself:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
After cleaning and prepping the area I painted everything with DP90 epoxy
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Lastly, I welded up the vent area of the cowl panel. This is a personal choice as I know many of you like the stock vents. But if you haven't noticed I lean towards the smooth clean look.

This was a busy six hour day. Tomorrow I plan on seam sealing everything under the cowl and then hope to get it all welded back in place.
Stay tuned!

This morning I went back out to the garage and started fitting the cowl top back in place.
Here is the inside of the cowl all painted.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
I laid down some 3M seam sealer where needed then installed the cowl.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Here it is fully welded and I have painted the areas that will be hidden buy the end supports brackets.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
I started to weld on the passenger side support.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Pretty smoky in there isn't it? I should have turned on the exhaust fan to clear it out little. But with the co$t of propane I would rather let it dissipate on it's own.
And that is when I ran out of gas, literally and figuratively. The welding gas bottle ran out. And so did my energy level. So I swept up my mess and called it a day. This week I will get a new bottle of gas and have at it next weekend.
Til next time.......

This weekend I decided it was time to see how the engine and transmission fit in the car. I know this may sound pretty basic, but when I was given the car it was missing the original set up. Add to that the fact that this car had a six shooter and now I am adding a 302 and an AOD. I want to mock it all up, figure out what holes need to be drilled and where so that when I prime the car next time I can take care of any bare metal areas then.
So here is where I started the day:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
I uncovered the engine for the first time in quite a while.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
The freshly rebuilt AOD:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Sliding the assembly into the car. This was much easier without the radiator support in the way. When I do it for the final time after paint it will not be anywhere near as easy.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
It took a little while to get everything bolted in place. Non stock engine and trans, front cross member and trans crossmember meant that a few curses were in order for a little while. But eventually it all went together.
I will have to clearance the floor support right here above the trans.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
I only slid in two bolts for now, but it fits.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
And for the first time I have an engine and trans in the car! This was huge for me. I was so happy.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Checking for header clearance on the passenger side. Looks good here.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
And on the driver side. Looks good here as well.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
They fit. Although it looks like an ear on the transmission will need to be trimmed back for the exhaust to mount up cleanly.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
I clamped the radiator support in place to check that and mounted the radiator to see how that fit everything as well.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Also checked for clearance to the master cylinder mount. Is there really room here for a booster? Doesn't look like it to me? Only 4.5" from the center of the large hole in the firewall to the valve cover.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
I had wanted to mount to the hood and check for clearance above the fuel injection. I will not be able to run the spacer I have as the hood hits. Even without the spacer the top of the injection is close to the hood, but it does fit.
Look at all that wiring!
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Final shot of the day. And I can honestly say I am really torn as to whether I am keeping the injection or selling it all with the harness and getting a carb and intake for it. I know the injection has nice drivability and runs great. But there is such a mess of wiring and "stuff" that needs to be under the hood. I really like clean and simple, and I don;t get that with the injection. Very torn right now. And I really need to decide before I drill any holes for the wiring and associated hardware. Decisions, decisions..........

Any plans for down bars or chassis stiffening in the front end? With that intake, there will be no way of running any kind of triangulated "shocktower" style braces.

Back at it today. Although not as much time as I would have liked to spend. I really need to find a career that will let me work three days and have four off! Do you know of any? I need more time in the garage!
Anyway, I started off by cleaning up the garage. What a mess it had become!
With my dads help I pulled the motor and trans to get them out of the way. Back on the stand and all wrapped up now they are safe. I finished welding the support brackets on the cowl top after running out of welding gas a couple weeks ago.
I then trimmed the motor and bracket on the power windows so they go up and down nice and smooth without that Bang! noise from before. Both sides are good now. I then stripped the doors and removed them from the car.
I then moved on to the radiator support. With my new fender aprons the passenger side doesn't meet up with the support because of where the factory battery box was.
I cut the offending area out.
Made a new panel and shaped it to fit. Had to do this twice as I cut the first one too short when trimming it for a close fit. Really pissed me off to have to start the entire patch over again.
Here is the patch all tacked in place. I will finish welding it during the week. I have a friend with some dimple dies and am going to use them to put some fresh air holes in this panel. I need the air for the injection. I also need to fill in where the tape is now. I want to close up around the radiator for better looks and to direct the air into the radiator.
Once this is done, I will get the entire car stripped and spray on four or five coats of the CRE epoxy primer. Then it will be time for body work.

I started the day off wanting to finish where I left off with my radiator support. I finished welding in the patch I made. Then moved on to filling in the areas right next to the opening for the radiator. I don't like the big gap that was there. So I made up some patches to close it up. I also had some rot on the bottom right corner that I cut out, made a patch for and welded it all beck up again.

Today brought on more of the same from yesterday. Sanding and grinding followed by more sanding and grinding. Sometimes I would grind then sand just for fun! Lol....
I have to really thank my dad for his help this weekend. We both put in 6 hours Saturday and another 6 hours today. That's 24 man hours in one weekend on the car! At 69 years old he is still happy to jump in and give a hand when needed.
We now have the car 98% stripped to bare metal. Still some little nooks and crannies to work on during the week, but nothing major. My goal/plan is to load it into my trailer on Friday after work and bring it to the booth that I use. Saturday I will blow it all out really good, mask it up and then bury it in high build epoxy!
These pictures probably look very similar to yesterdays bunch. But to me there is a huge difference.

Today for the first time in a long time I pulled the car outside into natural light. I loaded it up to bring it to the booth for the high build epoxy primer.
I could have done this at home. But since I have a booth available to me, I figure why not? Why get the garage a mess? Why have it smelling like crap for months? So off to the booth I went.

Friday night I trailered the car over to the booth and got it all unloaded. Saturday morning my dad and I pulled it outside where I sandblasted a couple areas I wasn't happy with. Nothing major, more for piece of mind than anything. Blew it all out, seamed to take forever to blow everything out of all the little areas.
Here dad is once again helping me out. He wiped it all down with DX330 wax and grease remover one last time while I mixed up the epoxy primer.
Here are the last shots of it in bare metal. I hope to never see this car like this again!

So now that the fabrication part of the project is over and the car is all primed. It is time to start the tedious task of sanding. Followed by more sanding, etc, etc.....
I am going to start todays update with the radiator support. In a previous post I showed where I had welded in some metal to close in around the radiator more. Here is after the primer is cured, sanded and with very little filler applied to make it look good. Next step for this side is primer. I still have the other side of the support to do.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Here is the bottom of the passenger side quarter where I welded in a new side running light. I blocked the area and had to apply just a skim coat of filler in the area to make it perfect. This is now ready for primer again as well.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Here is the front A pillar all set and ready for priming once more as well.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Here you can see where I did the filler work around the welded perimeter of the new Shelby tail panel. It didn't take very much here at all to get it smooth as well. You can also see where I have reinstalled the trunk lid and am checking it to the quarters.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
This last few pictures may need some explanation. I was once asked what I was going to do with the raised area above the drip rail now that I have shaved them off. To be honest I wasn't sure, until I went to the Detroit Autorama last weekend and saw a car with a treatment that I fell in love with. I am now stealing their idea. The funny thing was, I had looked at this car three times before I noticed this one detail. I love those kinds of hidden things.
Here is what I saw....

And here is what I did.....
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
I still have some refining to do here on the passenger side, but it is getting there. I hope to get it all in primer this week, and then start on the driver side next weekend!

There isn't much exciting to post this week. Lots of sanding. It doesn't look like much has gotten done, but one step at a time it is moving forward.
I fitted the trunk to the car, then installed the stock Grabber spoiler set. The spoiler pieces don't fit each other very well. So I ground down the ends of the center section to better fit in line with the end caps. I have now filled across the three parts for a smoother transition. I like it much more now.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
The driver side quarter has the most filler of anywhere else in the car. It may look like a ton of filler, but it is really fairly thin. This NOS quarter had some damage from being passed around all these years. Not too bad though.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Driver side quarter now blocked out for the first time, still a couple low spots to take care of. I did start the precess of filling the seam where the quarter meets the roof also.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
The roof is now completely blocked as well. Only two small low spots to fix. Then ready for a reprime.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
It is getting there. Still so much to do though. I hope to get all the initial body work done so I can reprime the entire shell the weekend after next. Time will tell.

I still have not been able to get done what I would like to with this pain in my neck. But, last week I did get out and sand down the door shells after having them blasted. Hung them up and sprayed two coats of Epoxy on them.
Today I installed the NOS door skins on both doors. I love forward progress!

I don't usually have the time during the week to go out and get work done in the garage. But tonight I went out for an hour to install the new pins and bushings in the hinges. While at it I bolted them on and then hung the door. No easy task all by yourself! I got it adjusted best I could for gaps. I can't worry too much about the front until I hang the fender. Lately I feel for every step forward I go at least one back, maybe even two!
I find it very funny how these Mavericks are put together. From one side to the other there really was no constancy in quality. When I last updated I had installed the skins and had already hung the drivers door back in place. Yesterday with the aid of my father I got the passenger door back on. What a mess. The driver door fell in place with beautiful gaps, while the passenger side needed plenty of massaging.
Here is the door hung in place....
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1591_zps20088337.jpg.html)
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1592_zps9fd87cac.jpg.html)
Oh yeah, before I forget, here are a couple shots of the hinges with the new bushings and pins installed. The great thing here is that once everything is adjusted, I can just pull the pins and paint the doors, then slide the pins back on and have perfect alignment again with ease.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1593_zps064a5532.jpg.html)
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1594_zps0fb3f917.jpg.html)
So I absolutely hate the door gaps, no way I can live with them. Too wide at the fender and way too much at the door/quarter/ rocker area.
Here is the door off the car again and the edges ground to bare metal.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1598_zps69844e30.jpg.html)

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1600_zpsdf6e3337.jpg.html)
The bottom edge near the quarter actually needed a .25" added to the bottom! This will be welded solid, but here I rehung the door to check fit. I had the door on and off six times during this entire process.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1601_zpsb68a8a59.jpg.html)

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1604_zps4f24d7e1.jpg.html)
This is the only welding that needs to be done, even with the panel bonder from 3M. Without doing this there is too much flex, or movement with the window frame.

I didn't get that much done this weekend. There was a car show in New York that I went to on Saturday. My dad and I drove out together and had a nice two hour (each way) cruise in the 32.
Today I had to clean up in the garage. It was a huge mess. It is so hard to keep everything organized when doing this type of work. What I did do was assemble the cars sheet metal and check everything for fit one more time. I still need to play with the hood and fenders a little on the driver side, but all in all not bad.
The nice part of doing all this today was getting the car outside and taking a look at it from a distance. Sometimes when doing all this you really need to step back and make sure it looks right. And that is hard to do inside the garage.

I do appreciate all the positive feedback. Thank you all for the support and kinds words throughout this project.
Today I spent a little while going over some parts I have recently picked up.
Here are the 13" drilled and slotted rotors that are going on all four corners of the car. Also in the pictures is the new aluminum hub for the front spindle and the front caliper. I am going to have the calipers powder coated soon.

I also spent quite a bit of time aligning the nose to my satisfaction. Once I got the best out of it I had to apply some West Systems six10 epoxy based two part filler to the sides of the hood to fill in the gaps a little. I love this hood, and I am sure on most Mavericks it fits great, but for some reason on my car the side gaps weren't to my satisfaction. Good for me I planned on painting the hood anyway. This product, once cured, can be sanded down and shaped. Another coat may be needed, but if not I can prime over it and it will be almost indestructible.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1684_zps5dda5d18.jpg.html)
While getting the hood and fenders all lined up, I also installed the hood latch assembly and striker. I don't have the original hood stops, and I am not sure I would have used them if I did anyway. So instead I bought four of these custom polished puppies.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1688_zps03405a9f.jpg.html)
I used two of them for the front of the hood, and the last pair here for the trunk lid. I love the adjustability of them.

I am hoping to get a few hours in the garage tomorrow while my wife is at church. She is cool with that as long as I am ready to head over to my in-laws by noon for and early Mothers Day meal.

I didn't get a ton done today. With it being Mother's Day and all. I did get a couple hours to go out and sand down the edges of the hood where I had applied the West System's six10 Epoxy.
Here you can see the results of it with much better gaps. More to my liking now. I still have a little more to do, but I am feeling better about the hood lines now.

I have to tell you, it is much harder getting things done during the nice weather than it is when it's cold during the winter months. I have resolved to the fact that this car will not be painted before our vacation last week of July as I had hoped. Too many other things to do when it's nice out....
Yesterday we went to Brimfield Antique Fair in Brimfield, Mass. If you are not from around here then I couldn't begin to describe the size and magnitude of this event. Some car stuff, but mostly anything you could imagine that is old for sale. Huge is all I can say. We walked for roughly 6 hours and I think we only saw 1/3 of the show.
Today I was working hard in the garage. With the front end still on I continued to fit the hood to the fenders and to the cowl.
Here is where I started....

I applied some filler across the panels to get a perfect horizon across the tops of the hood, fender and cowl......

I have been playing with the Maverick, but not much that can be seen in pictures. More sanding and metal work fitting gaps to my standards. It is all so time consuming to do. At the same time there is so many other things to do when the weather turns nice. That is one reason I like the winter when there is a project at hand. I can turn up the heat in the shop and lock myself in without any distractions. My plans for paint by end of July are gone, right now hoping by end of Summer. I did send the bumpers out for chrome. Should get them back in August.
In the meantime I have done a few things to my 32. Small changes. Swapped out the mirrors, then over the weekend I took off the hood top and flamed the underside. Looking for something different without taking up too much time. Did the entire thing in six hours from start to finish.
I laid out one set first and masked them off, these will stay yellow which will create a negative flame......
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1755_zpsca1ce3e8.jpg.html)
Then taped out another set, and masked them off for the positive flames....
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1756_zpsd16b389b.jpg.html)

I have not gotten as much done on the Mav as I had hoped. I know, broken record here, right? I have been doing a few things to my 32 for the summer shows.
Anyway, yesterday I gathered up a bunch of parts to take to get powder coated.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1843_zpsc8e86a5f.jpg.html)
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1844_zpse3b38f7c.jpg.html)
I then took the driver door that I had stripped the 70's factory primer off of, then sanded the DP epoxy on the rest of the door. Now it is time for a few coats of fresh epoxy.
Bare metal outer skin.....
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1840_zps5242d63c.jpg.html)
Sanded epoxy.....
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1841_zpsec62c93b.jpg.html)
Ford logo. I masked off the center so I didn't fill it with primer. I sprayed two coats like this, then pulled the tape and applied open more coat over it.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1842_zps67359780.jpg.html)
All primed.....

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1847_zps49dbba14.jpg.html)
And lastly the Ford logo with primer on it now shows how it will look after some sanding and paint.

I have been away from the car for a couple weeks. Other things to do with the family and the local Goodguys event was last weekend. Now I am back to it.
The first thing I did this morning was hang the drivers door again and see where I stood:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1957_zpseba9410f.jpg.html)
I then sanded the door down and ran a coat of filler across the seems for a better look. This is after the first quick coat was sanded, sorry for the slightly blurry shot.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1958_zpsf3308eb5.jpg.html)
Second and final coat done and fixed a small dent in the door skin:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1959_zps89f58c10.jpg.html)
Mirror holes drilled and bolted in place, also sanded them down and they will be ready for final primer.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1961_zps774ecff7.jpg.html)
This may look like a lot of filler, but it is actually really thin, most of it hit the floor in the form of dust.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1962_zpsedb082a9.jpg.html)
Final shot includes the fender all sanded and body work on it all done, except for the front side light area. I will do that next weekend. This side of the car is now ready for more primer. I will pull the fender and door and prime them off the car.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1963_zps2e69edaf.jpg.html)
I also spent some time making some adjustments to the front lip of the hood so the the front molding will fit. This area was too thick and too low for the molding to fit properly up against the bottom of the hood. It now fits like a glove. The hood is now almost ready for primer as well.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1960_zps6e444b26.jpg.html)
Til next time...........

I took the hood, left front fender, custom front valance, drivers door, spoiler and end caps to the booth for some high build epoxy primer. Today I brought all the parts home and installed a few nuts and bolts to hang the parts. I like block sanding with the parts bolted down and stable instead of moving around on a scissor stand. Plus it was nice to see the car this way.

Today I took the lower valance off and mounted the driving lights. Slid the valance back into place for a couple pictures.
I needed to check for clearance between the lights and the radiator support, I am good there thankfully. Also, wanted to make sure they fit properly. I am not really happy with that. Aftermarket lights bolted to an aftermarket Camaro valance means things don;t lie up well. I am going to make a new mount for the lights for a better fit, but all in all I am very happy with the look.

I have a friend building a Model A pick up hot rod that I promised when he had it ready for paint I would do it, no matter what I was in the middle of I would take care of him. Well, that time has come.
So I have spent all day today getting a few things cleaned up, removed all the body panels and masked up the shell so I can put it in primer once again. I feel better having it sit for a month in primer than open sanded primer and exposed body filler. Tomorrow I will load it into my trailer and haul it to the booth for three coats of high build epoxy, run it through a bake cycle and then drag it home. Tuesday evening I will reassemble all the body panels so the car will be whole again. It takes up less space that way.

As I had planned I loaded the car in my trailer yesterday late in the afternoon. This morning I made my way over to the booth I use. Unloaded the car, blew it off one final time then straight into the booth for three coats of primer.
Here is the car shell all ready for its coatings of primer......

Three coats of primer and a 45 minute bake session and I loaded it right back into the trailer for the ten minute ride home. I left the house at 8:30 and was home at noon.
Here it is right after unloading it in my driveway......

So I wasn't going to put this together until mid week, but when the adrenalin gets going you just have to roll with it sometimes!
Add to that the primer being baked and hard as can be already.... well I just started putting it all together. 90 minutes later this is how it looked. I then dragged it back outside for some pictures.....
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_2059_zps05e60ba5.jpg.html)
I haven't spoken much about this spoiler. I have shelved the raised spoiler I was making for a while. I hope to get back to it, but for now this is what I came up with, much more subtle but still with my flair and style.....

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_2068_zps94bf2a08.jpg.html)
I love seeing the lines in this picture. I worked very hard to get them to look like this.....
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_2070_zpsb94a4a80.jpg.html)
I know some have made comments about not liking the mirrors I chose, But I think they look good. Especially now that they are the same color as everything else.....
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_2071_zps66f50924.jpg.html)
Now that I see the entire car in primer I can see things that need to be fixed. It gets hard with sanded primer and sanded body filler to catch all the little things. Now that I can really "see" everything I have some repairs to make here and there.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_2077_zps0f1f638b.jpg.html)

I still have to finish the passenger door and front fender as well. But it looks like this is as far as I will get on this project for a month roughly.
That is it for now, thanks for watching.

You are right about the hood... Sort of. Not sure its so much the hood as it is the entire body. If yours was anything like mine, there were some pretty serious panel alignment issues. LOL

Thank you all for the feedback. I am having a ball with this project. I am loving that this entire build is being done by me in my garage. Although, yes I am borrowing a spray booth for the paint, I am the one pulling the trigger. The only things on this car that will be done by someone else are, the transmission was built by a friend, and the upholstery. That's it. The rest is all home grown.
Thanks again,
Glenn

I was not a fan of the mirrors the first time I saw them but with it all in primer they look right at home. It's going to be a very nice ride when you're done with it. I'm hoping to get started on mine this fall and will be going along just as you are, home built. I'll do most all of it myself with the exception of the interior and possibly the paint. I have no where to shoot it and just marginal experience with a gun.

I know I haven't updated this thread in a while, but that is because for the winter I changed directions and did a quick make over on my Deuce coupe.
Now back on the Maverick I have been busy. I finished up the engine compartment, and got it all painted. This is the final body color, but with a PPG matte clear here. The outside will be full gloss.
Also got all the new suspension in it, as well as the 13" brakes at all four corners. Then bolted on the 17" front and 18" rear tires and rolled it outside. First time the car has been on the ground since 2009.
