Really loving everything about this car. Great color choice, and the gloss body with matte engine compartment is a nice subtle touch.
I know you were still thinking about building a raised spoiler in the future, but I really think what you came up here is just right. The entire car has a "subtle cool" vibe going on, and the current spoiler continues that theme.

Can't wait to see more progress, and a completed car.

I can help a little on the updates, he has posted some on the Maverick forums. It's going to be a damn nice car once it's finished!

Here are a few pictures to bring us all up to date..........

The car is in primer here, and the stripes is just tape as I was playing with ideas.

And as I got some parts ready I started letting the paint fly...........

This is all being done in PPG Envirobase. The rest of the car will have D8152 Glamour clear, but these parts are cleared with Ceramic clear to keep the chipping down.

Six hours today in the shop sanding the Mav. I got the driver side all blocked and ready for final primer. I am happy with the gaps and the panel alignment down the side, the horizontal line form panel to panel is looking great blocking from one panel into the other.

It is PPG waterbase that I am using, but any company and paint line will have it. I am using a Chrysler color code PQD, called Surf Blue. It is a current color for several models.

thanks a lot! beautiful color! i may have to get some for some test panels. I planned on using PPG Blue Heaven on my mustang from their Vibrance collection, but this color may change my mind!

Time to play a little catch up......

I bought a new trunk lid from maverick Man. This is a carbon fiber lid with an extended and integrated spoiler. The part fit well, but not quite as good as I would want. So, I "adjusted" the gaps.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1713_zpsbcflp774.jpg.html)

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1718_zpsdhxfnivu.jpg.html)

The gap for the quarter extension was too tight, so I cut it and moved it to where it needed to be.

With that done I decided since the trunk lid looked so good having no seem to the spoiler, the end caps needed to be bonded to the quarters.

Now back onto the dash. I brought it home from the shop and then sanded just the top section down. Bolted it back in the car and then played out the stripes on the hood and cowl as I plan to do. I then continued the stripe from the cowl onto the dash. Then the dash came back out and back to the booth. I masked it up and sprayed the stripe color, then cleared the top section.

All these parts will now be sanded down once again and cleared again in a matte finish (low gloss) clear.

Thank you all for the kind words and encouragement, it is all greatly appreciated.

Today I sanded all the parts down and after a ton of cleaning on them sprayed on the PPG D8113 matte finish clear. There is no sanding and buffing this clear otherwise the gloss comes back, so cleanliness is super important.

Here is the final product. I left them all in the booth and will grab it all tomorrow. Once home I will install the gauges in the bezel, all the associated switches in the lower panel and mount the dash pad. Can't wait to see it all together for the first time.

Brought the pieces home from the booth today and assembled them. New gauges and custom indicator panel all now installed in my home made steel gauge panel. In the lower dash panel I made i then installed the ignition switch with matching keys, wiper and headlight switch. I bolted on the black dash pad I have been saving for this project and then installed it all in the car.

I am so happy with the look and how it all came together. Its almost like I planned it that way!! Lol......

With the lower valance painted, I sanded it all down and prepped it for the stripe design I am going to do on the car.

Here is it on the car getting the tape just right.....

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_0802_zpsbpivp6za.jpg.html)

sanded, taped and based the stripe color, which is only a few shades off of the body color.

With the bottom of the hood all masked, the topside got final sanded and ready for paint. Here the trunk lid and the top of the hood are in sealer, then base, then clear.

Tell me about ceramic clear. Looks good.

PPG Ceramic clear, D8126, is super hard once cured. It laughs at 800 grit sand paper! Mercedes has been using it at the OEM level for years. Very, very chip and scratch resistant. I'm not doing the entire car with it, but these front end parts definitely to help with stone chips and road rash.

Today I got the drivers door blocked and hung in the booth for final primer. Also both front fenders are now in final primer as well. In the next week I will finish up a couple minor spots on the passenger door and get it in final primer as well. Once all are that way I will do a final block sand and then seal, base and clear all four parts. Then it will be time to finish up a couple things on the body itself and get it to final prime too.

These parts should be in color in the next few weeks, then I hope to have the shell painted in September. Things are moving along nicely now.

I've been following for a while, and couldn't remember for sure, but I started at the beginning to see if the front valence was from a Camaro. Reading through I see I missed the blend you did around the rear window. Looks really good, do you have any pics of the fab of that area? There's a few random missing pics, so I don't know if I missed them because of that. I always kinda liked the Maverick. My neighbor had one when I was a kid.

The other thing I thought was funny, when I started back on page 1, so said you were building it so you could cruise it for a while and give it to your daughter when she turned 16...Then I saw you started in '09! Better get a move on, lol.

I really hope she appreciates all the work. Too many kids don't.

I had a couple days to get some more work done. I block sanded the doors and fenders and got them in the booth for sealer, three coats of color and clear. I am very happy with the results. Almost kills me to sand it all down later on for the stripes and then reclear it all.

Sorry for the delay, I am just now seeing your comments. Thanks for following and the positive comments! I am not sure I have any more pics of the blend of around the window when I shaved the drip rail, I will have to look. I am definitely taking more/better pics now than I was.

Yes, this is for Hannah. She is 14.5 right now. So I am starting to work with a little more diligence as you can probably tell. The good thing for me is, here in CT she has to be 16.5 before getting her license and even after that there are some restrictions. I still have time. At this rate though, I am hoping to have it done by this time next year. I just have to finish the body, and then start the assembly.

Could you post some pictures of them sometime with the aluminum foil removed?

So with all the parts painted, I am now woking on the body. I finished block sanding it and got it all masked for another round of primer. Now that I see it in all one color, I can see a couple minor things I need to tweak, but all in all I am happy with the results. Hoping to be painting the shell Labor Day weekend, but not really sure I will make that date.

Going to leave it body color, but the inside area of the door is going to be recleared in a matte finish. I want that logo to be subtle.

And while I have had some spare time, I painted the valve covers as well. I like something a little more detailed than just chrome or billet, this has become a bit of a thing for me as you will see in the last picture. I have done something like this on the last few cars I have owned.

Here is the new valve cover sanded and prepped for paint, then sealed grey, then based in the darker accent blue, then masked for the stripe followed by the blue that will be on the body. Once unmasked I cleared them and ran them thru a bake cycle. After that I sanded them all down and recleared them but this time used a matte clear. After another bake cycle I reassembled the billet trim. Looking forward to putting them on the engine soon.

Ok, so it has been a very eventful week for me and my project!!

On Monday morning I loaded it up into a friends trailer and brought it to the booth. It took me 7 hours to fully mask it off. Lots of work for a car that the engine compartment and underside are already painted. Even in a down draft booth I wanted to keep the overspray at a minimum.

Here is it about to go in the trailer.....

And now in the booth on jack stands all masked up. A small fortune was spent on masking tape and plastic sheeting. Thank you 3M for the generous donation of products!!

Funny how much darker the color looks in the booth for some reason. It really is a much brighter color than it shows here.

In any case, at this point I bagged the car and prepared it to spray the filler panel above the package tray. Grey sealer, black base and then matte clear.

Beautiful color, and great job spraying. You sure know your way around a spray gun, I'm guessing this is not your first rodeo.

Definitely not my first time at the dance.

That is a beautiful color. Nice job!

Looks great. I hope assembly goes well. :)

Absolutely Stunning. That color is Perfect. Great Work

This weekend was spent getting the interior sheetmetal prepped and black DP90 epoxied. Something I should have done a long time ago, but just kept putting it off until now. While I let it sit and fully cure, I tackled a few other things that needed to be done before I Dynamat the floors.

I started the day with figuring out where to mount to battery box and fuel vent from II Much Fabrication. I am happy with the placement.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1544_zpslckkcy7t.jpg.html)

After that was done, I drilled the holes and mounted the wire harness pass thru I am going to be using. Something a little cleaner looking than a regular grommet.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1548_zpsfqowbowx.jpg.html)

Then I took care of drilling the holes and mounting the heater hose barbs. I had welded up the holes in the firewall where the factory hose would have gone. I will now be running the hoses thru the finer well and then into the cowl from the wheel side of the apron.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1547_zpssvunyiuu.jpg.html)

Also, mounted the Lokar shifter. I had drilled the holes for this a few years ago when the seats were in the car. Now i needed to reinstall the shifter so I can locate the console I will be running. I need to fab up mounting tabs for the console, and the shifter will locate where everything else mounts.

So today was an incredible day for me. After all these years of working away on the car I was able to, with the help of my wife, hang all the sheet metal parts. After that I bolted the taillights, fuel filler, grille and headlight bezels on. I did all this to make sure everything still fit as I had planned. It is amazing that no matter how many times you assemble and test fit it all when in primer, the second you take it apart for paint, boom, it does'y fit right anymore.

I am happy to report that other than a couple extremely minor tweaks everything still looks great!

The first, and my most cherished picture is my daughters reaction to seeing it outside when she got home from horseback riding today. I already had it outside, the kid was bouncing in her seat as they came up the driveway. It was priceless. Good thing I have a year and a half before she gets her drivers license. I get to use it for a little while before turning it over to her.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1640_zpsc8ygdx4x.jpg.html)

After that, I was able to get some pictures of it when the sun was shining........

I put the dash back in as well as I will need it to line up the stripes when I put the car back in the booth for the hood stripes. Also, this is the console I will be using, but recovering in black.

I appreciate the compliments. Thanks. Would love to see your car.

NOS quarters pop up from time to time. I currently have a passenger side nos quarter as a spare. I have someone that wants it, but he hasn't moved on it in quite some time. I have had a total of four quarters in the last five years. Be patient and keep watching the MMB forum and Ebay, thats what I did.

I have been following along with that build. Done very quickly, I believe they just started the entire project early this summer. While I admire the style in which they built, it isn't something I would do.

Thanks again for the compliments on my car. Its been a long road doing the entire thing from start to finish so far all by myself.

I was lookin' at the console in this, and couldn't help but think

"Yeah, a 250 inch Falcon 6 with a Vintage Inlines (ex Classic Inlines) aluminum head and an aluminum valve cover machined to match the console cover. With the tubular grill, the long rear lights with bars separating sections, the whole line thing ties together."

And then I though, hey maybe i should do that!

Except mine is planned for an MGB -W/ six 40mm CV bike carbs.

Obviously just a thought, but it would be the only one on your block

Ok, so it has been a very eventful week for me and my project!!

On Monday morning I loaded it up into a friends trailer and brought it to the booth. It took me 7 hours to fully mask it off. Lots of work for a car that the engine compartment and underside are already painted. Even in a down draft booth I wanted to keep the overspray at a minimum.

Here is it about to go in the trailer.....

And now in the booth on jack stands all masked up. A small fortune was spent on masking tape and plastic sheeting. Thank you 3M for the generous donation of products!!

So I finally finished a 1940 Ford side job I was doing and now I can get back to the Maverick. In between working on the 40, I did get some stuff done though. Today I spent some time on it as well.

Heading back to the booth next week for the stripes and to reclear the entire car to burry the stripes.

I used to work for a local paint supply jobber store and they sold this sound deadener, so I bought a bunch of it and used it on the inside of the Mav. It works quite well. I did the entire trunk floor, interior floor and firewall as well as the roof.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_2505_zpsikad6bab.jpg.html)

This morning I arrived at the booth at 6:45am and starting laying color. I had a couple small spots I touched up and needed to spot them in, then did one full even coat on everything. After that it was time to lay out the stripes. All this took until around 4pm. At that point I called it quits and went home to spend some time with the family. Back at it again first thing to start laying the clear down when I am fresh and rested.

After that, I was able to get some pictures of it when the sun was shining........

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1630_zps1i7511sk.jpg.html)

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_1620_zpsg9a5xski.jpg.html)

I put the dash back in as well as I will need it to line up the stripes when I put the car back in the booth for the hood stripes. Also, this is the console I will be using, but recovering in black.

After seeing the car outside I have decided to black out the front of the radiator support. Too much blue showing through for me. Also, the headlight bezels will get painted black.

So today was another long day at the shop. Got the shell, doors and hood all cleared. After a bake I was able to get the wheels and tires back on and get it out of the booth to clear the fenders and trunk lid. Those are baking as I type this.

If you believe the weather men, we might be having a storm coming. So I am not sure how much will happen tomorrow. I will get the truck and trailer Friday and bring the car home.

I went in to the shop today to get a couple things done and then head home to spend time with my family. This is supposed to be a vacation week. But instead I have 50 hours and Just shy of $1000 in materials in this final booth session.

Today I masked up the trunk area, covered the car with plastic sheeting and painted the trunk hinges. I really wish Ford made these a "serviceable" item. But since they are not removable this is what I was relegated to do.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_2661_zpsf5ij0yaf.jpg.html)

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_2665_zpstqtiorlw.jpg.html)

Then after unmasking everything but the interior, I reinstalled the hood and fenders. Nothing is lined up very critically, just enough to load it up into the trailer tomorrow and get it home. Then all the parts will come back off for final assembly of the drivetrain and upholstery.

I Really LOVE the subtlety of the two colors together for the stripes. At some angles they completely disappear, then Bam!, they are there as two different as any colors could be.

Today I went and got the car. I pushed it outside into daylight and was able to stand back, it was thrilling to say the least. Loaded it up in the trailer for the trip home. Once unloaded I took a few more pics before pushing it back into my backyard garage.

Later this weekend I will disassemble the fenders, hood and doors and start the sand and buff stage. Then on to installing the engine and trans. After that, final assembly of everything else.

The sanding and buffing process has begun. I pulled the fenders and hood off, then covered the window openings with plastic sheeting along with the engine compartment.

Started with 800 and went all the way up to 3000, then started buffing. So far very happy with the results. Roof, quarters and rear tail pan along with the rear valance are now done. I need to hit a couple small spots and then do the cowl.

I got the roof and both quarters all sanded and buffed. Now time to move on to some mechanical things. I bent up the stainless brake lines, got the heater box and inside heater hoses hooked up. Then I dropped the engine in place, what a moment! A little too much chrome for me, but the valve covers and air cleaner are not staying. I have a set of paint matched Billet Specialties covers to install later after all the fab/dirty work is done. Don't want to scratch them.

Then I got the car back off the floor and up on the Quick Lift ramps. Now I can install the transmission, run the fuel lines, get the driveshaft in etc. So much to do..........

This morning I mounted the brake pedal assembly. Need to do the throttle as well, but found where I have to modify the mount for my liking. I also mounted the seats one last time to make sure things were good just for drill. I am dropping them off tomorrow at the upholsterers and wanted to be 100% positive it all worked properly before I did that. Happy with the fitment, I had my daughter come out and sit to see how things adjust for her. This is one happy kid.

I am not a fan of the look of the distributor up front the way Ford does it. So in searching around for something different I ran across CompuTronics distributors ignition system. It works really well and cleans up the look compared to the normal Ford design.

Yes you must use the rear sump pan. I just blasted and repainted the stock 89 Mustang GT pan and it fit perfect.

I installed the parts on the back of the car. Anyone that has been following along knows I pie cut the bumper ends and reshaped them. While not fitted to the new Pro Touring 3/16 gap, this is tons better than any factory Maverick. Love the look of that chrome from Advanced Chrome Plating in Tn. Also installed the trunk lock key and the stainless fuel filler from Johnson's Hot Rod Shop.

For comparison....

I had found a perfect set of NOS tinted glass for the car. Everything but the windshield, which is fine since it is available still. Here is the painted 1/4 window frames all painted and the glass urethaned into the frame.

I have 13" disc brakes at all four corners from Engineered Components Inc. They use all GM parts so if I ever have an issue while traveling everything can be sourced from any good parts store. Here is what the factory, very rough cast caliper is like from GM. No thanks, so I spent 2 hours per caliper smoothing them. Then when done I painted them all body color.

So its a freezing cold 20 degrees outside, and the heater in my shop isn't working. Made for a chilly day working on the car, but, I have to push through if I want to ever drive this thing.

Today I pulled all the front suspension back out of the car. When I installed it, I did so loosely and with out any grease or anti seize. I wanted to rip it back apart, make sure everything was lubed up properly, and put back together correctly this time around. I had done all that originally just to make the car a roller, but now as we are in final assembly mode, it was time to get it all set.

In doing so, I got the brakes installed for the last time. This is a set of 13" drilled and slotted rotors, and the calipers I smoothed and painted. I am LOVING the look!!

So there is a blizzard going on outside, and the CT Governor as issued a travel ban. So whats a guy to do? Walk out to the garage, turn the heat up and get to work!

Today was spent doing more mechanical assembly stuff. New valve covers are now installed. Matching air cleaner is stuck in transport, I will paint it over the weekend and install next week. Spark plug wires made and routed nice and neat. I made the transmission cooler lines and installed them. Also, because the electric fan was going to hit the snout of the water pump pulley, I had a friend bend me up a new one and offset the fan. Not optimal, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Lol...... Still plugging away. Have had to do some travel for work so that has slowed me a bit, but I am still on track. Sadly with the wiring and small details being done it isn't things that show up in photo's for an update.

My goal all winter was to have the car done and in time for the Goodguys show in Rhinebeck, NY. While I still plan on having it done by then, I just found out that our town has scheduled graduation for the high school seniors that same weekend. I'm not sure my oldest daughter would really understand me missing her graduating for a car show!? Lol..... Looks like my first big event will be the Syracuse Nationals now. I'll be there for work anyway in the PPG booth, and have the car outside in the show.

I'm disappointed as well. Everyone from work was passing around the schedule to figure out who was working the PPG booth. It was a bummer knowing I won't be able to make it. But, you only have one time to attend your first kids high school graduation!

Been busy lately doing things that don't add up to much for an update. That and a weeks worth of travel for work make it difficult to get things done. So here is the latest with many mini updates in one.

I finally got the rear brakes installed and the cables run for the e brake.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_3272_zpstnzfpv4a.jpg.html)

Tank installed and all fuel lines hooked up. Just need to install the tank level float.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_3271_zpslxhuvs8x.jpg.html)

After getting the new front seat foams out of the box, my upholsterer and I were talking about how cool it would be to get another set and make it look like it has four bucket seats. So, of course I ordered another set right away. Here is a quick mock up of them in place.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_3230_zpsfng3s3lk.jpg.html)

And here is the teaser of the front seat bottom. Black vinyl and b/w Houndstooth.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_3310_zps7mdsvkwt.jpg.html)

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_3318_zps710xl2zl.jpg.html)

After that, I had to finally make a upper radiator hose. when I installed the March Performance serp kit it made the stock V8 hose not work. I have tried in vain to find something that would work, but no luck. So, with the aid of some pieces I was able to tack all these individual steel tubing together. I will bring it to a friend and have it all tig welded, then smooth it out. Not sure if I will paint it or have it coated when done.

It came out nice, and I am happy with it. But I really just wanted a simple black rubber hose. It seems like nothing on this car has gone that way, not sure why I expected this hose to be any different.

Maverick's are notorious for not having a good place to mount front speakers. Since the aftermarket doesn't do custom kick panels, I made these.

In my estimation, there is no one better at chrome! They certainly aren't afraid to charge for that reputation, but like everything in life, quality costs good money! While the cost of these two little bumpers was a small fortune, I am very satisfied with the job they did.

As mentioned in the post just before this one, I missed my slot at the upholstery shop. Lucky for me I have a good guy that was still willing to help me move forward. Last Sunday he came to me and installed the headliner! Only took him 2 hours, and there isn't a flaw or wrinkle to be seen!

Still very much unsure about the painted rad support. As a painter I like the extra effort it takes to color match everything. And who will be looking at the car from this angle anyway?! Still, I may end up painted it matte black. Time will tell.

1st, paint a piece of cardboard black to make your decision about the radiator support. I think it looks good blue but maybe if you had a black accent around the radiator but not the whole support it might be just enough. 2nd. The stripes are great. That's rare and a great idea. 3rd, unless you come a whole lot closer, I'll never get to see this in person. For that I'm sad. The average person will walk by and say "nice car" but won't know all the changes that went into making it sooo good. :) I'm waiting for the drive video. :)

First off, thanks again for all the positive comments about the car. They are very much appreciated, and help to motivate!

Its a funny thing, there is another thread that just got started on here about how some of the cars being built now are going way overboard. I completely understand where the OP is coming from. To me, the best modifications are the ones that go unnoticed. It is my belief that Boyd Coddington said it best in an early interview, when his career and style was first blossoming, that when looking at a car, no one thing should jump out at you. It should be a seamless and subtle look from end to end. I agreed with him then, and still do. Yes some cars have wild paint, or what ever. But all in all no one modification should be glaring.

Take the Ford script I put on the inside of the doors, I actually hope most people don't really notice that. But the few that do, they will get it and it will be those people that I did it for. Does that make sense?

As for the rad support. I would never do the entire thing anyway. I think the very top "bar" for lack of a better term would stay blue. But the face of it would go black. Still up in the air. This winter I plan on making a close out panel for it that will cover the opening between the grill and the rad support.

Glenn, I agree with your statement about Boyd. The last 3 projects I've done would need to be next to a stocker for most to see the changes. I had a friend who was involved in a discussion about cool. He and I determined that if the most uninformed person walked up and said "that's cool", then you got it. If you have to tell someone it's cool, you missed it somehow. Cars like yours that are slick are there. The flow has to be right. The general layout has to be cohesive. If anything sticks out, it may be a negative instead of a positive. IMHO. :)

So I have not been doing much on the car in the last few weeks. I am so incredibly disgusted with it right now its pretty hard to even look at! For the first time during this entire project I have been letting someone else work on the car in the hopes it would help me. Well, that didn't work as planned. The guy is a friend that has wired dozens if not 100 hot rods over the years. I don't know why now, or what has changed. But he is dragging this project out. Started wiring in early March, and it still isn't done! On top of that, look at this rats nest of wires!!!! So because of the delay I have missed my turn at the upholstery shop and that guy had to take the next car in line, understandably. So now I am to a point where I am about to rip all this out, buy a new harness and start over and just do it myself. Such ugliness I can't take it.

This looks like an 8 year old did it.

One step forward, nine steps back.........

But all in all no one modification should be glaring.

Take the Ford script I put on the inside of the doors, I actually hope most people don't really notice that. But the few that do, they will get it and it will be those people that I did it for. Does that make sense?

.

Haven't checked in for a bit, WOW this is turning out absolutely amazing. The attention to detail you have put into it is killer.

I think you both have nail on head with subtlety to mods, my thought are 90% of people aren't going to "get it" and that's ok. Its the 10% that KNOW mavericks well that can pick out all your detail. And that's the ones you really getting the praise or respect from that make it worth the effort. Well executed sir.

Lastly.
OUCH on the wiring, I can't imagine that staying like that after all the careful planning and building thus far. That's a rough set back. No doubt you will rectify it

There's no doubt in my mind that you can wire this car. Not trying to tell you what to use but I used a Centech because the fusepanel has screw terminals. That allowed me to install it flat against anything. I will do anything I can to help with this. I want you and your child to be satisfied knowing the car is safe and reliable. Your friend has lost the ball completely. For most people, 2 days will wire a car the 1st time. GGRRRRR!

Here is the car peaking out into the sun for the first time since last summer when I painted it. Now its a car!

Today was one of the days you dream of and wait so long for on a build like this. After all these years I was finally able to start the car, and then after trans, and other fluids were all topped and checked, along with a fresh oil change. I was finally able to drive the car out of the exhaust shop and into the trailer. Then at home unload it and drive it into the garage. All while sitting on the floor mind you because I have not mounted the seats. Still waiting patiently for my turn at the upholstery shop.

The first run.

oh come on, for this long a project call Freiburger and Finnegan, let them sit on a bucket and do donuts, kidding the no hood on look is right up thier alley but you would have to block off radiator or put solid washer in tstat hole to make it roadkill worthy.
But dang dude, long time coming and you finally so very close! congrats. I like the blue too. I have 4 projects now, getting 78 C10 running, 66 Caprice running, 77 Monza Running and fixing my 04 Grand Prix daily driver project.
04 GP just needs engine, 66 needs carb put back on and some wheels/tires sorted out and exhaust then I can do some driving in patina, truck eh welll,,,,, and 77 Monza needs new engine.

Honestly, the biggest reason for not at least goosing the car was that the TV cable has not been set yet. The transmission builder is coming to do it. Said if I romp on it even once I will likely smoke the trans, so not worth it!

I don't know that I ever really talked about them. I went looking for something easy and kool looking. While at the Goodguys show in Dallas last October I was talking with Ken Seymour from Rodworx, they sell all sorts of street rod lights. He suggested these when I told him what I was looking for. They are 1932 Ford front spreader bar replacement lights. I just bent up a bracket and mounted them.

Here they are lit up.

There probably won't be anything more significant to share after this until it goes to upholstery. So for now, I hope you enjoy this.

I had the anodizing stripped off the hood lip molding and had it show polished, same with the headlight bezels. I then painted the underside of the hood lip molding body color and matte clear. This is unlike all other Mavericks, but I liked how it makes the molding appear thinner, and seems to disappear on the underside of the hood.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_4117_zpsqnderjqs.jpg.html)

Normally on Maverick headlight bezels the painted area is either black or silver. For me I wanted a little more of a unique look and painted them body color. I am in love with the look!

So the exhaust is now done and the car runs. I have installed the carpet and a seat, so the next step was to venture out of the driveway and go for a cruise. A short one though. Just across the street from me is a horse shoe shaped street, so I pulled out of my driveway and just down the road, then around the loop. Senses were running very high, but she ran well, shifted through the gears and everything worked as it should. I took a video, but with Photobucket being what it is I can't seem to share it, so you will have to settle for a few pictures.

The first picture of it outside and not in my driveway!!!

The car is at the upholstery shop getting done. Rear package shelf is now covered and installed. Also, wrapped the extensions that go from package shelf to the headliner. These are normally just painted steel pieces.

While at it I wanted more than just the normal back seat panels that are textured plastic, so he wrapped them in the same black material and added the houndstooth as well. I have yet to see anyone ever do this on a Maverick.

And here is the beginning of the back seat. I bought a second set of front bucket seat foams. We are using them to make a bench seat that will have the same contouring as the front seats.

More on this to come....

Progress on the interior has been slow, but steady. Door panels are now installed for the last time. All new reproduction arm rests and handle are being used as well as the power window switches from for the windows. No more cranks! We decided to have the pleats spread out as they go towards the rear of the car, just something a little different.

Rear seat back is getting there too. Not done here, just a sample. This should be done Monday then he will start covering the base.

Thanks, she is coming along! Yes, power windows are from Nu-Relic. They custom made them for me, at the time it wasn't something they offered for my car. But, they were willing to make me a set provided I send them a complete set of OE regulators. I was very happy with what they gave me, and they didn't uptake the custom fabrication at all. Just what retail would have been for a 2 door vehicle. Good people to deal with.

This is my second set from them. I installed their now piece glass set of power windows in my 47 ford back in 2009. Just a really nice direct bolt in product. And how little times can you have someone tell you "bolt in" replacement and they actually are? Of course wiring aside.

Back seat is now done. I love these pictures, but have to say this all looks sooooo much better in person. IN the car, in the shop it just doesn't photograph that well.

Only thing left now is the kick panels and center console. Then onto the trunk.......

In an effort to make the back seat look as if it belonged in the car to begin with, the side panels were recontoured to match the side of the rear seat. The side panel normally go straight up top to bottom. That matched the factory rear bench. But because my new seat has a tapered contour, my upholstery guy built up the side panels to match the seat. Making it look as though it came that way from factory. The first picture illustrates where he added to the side panels.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://s266.photobucket.com/user/hotrod-1947/media/IMG_4242_zpsdrllygnn.jpg.html)

This second picture shows it now upholstered and how it flows as though originally made this way from Ford.

And here is the back seat 100% completed. By using a second set of front bucket seat foams he was able to make the rear bench look exactly as the fronts with all the bolsters and contours. Even the knee bolster is in place just like the front seats!

Nice! Does the car match your original vision?

So, that is an interesting question, and of course is hard to answer with a simple yes or no.

The original plan with this car was a simple driver, a $5k budget. Nice paint and an engine trans swap. That all went sideways within the first 30 days when I ordered the custom front suspension! After that I had to really soul search and come up with what my vision really was now. What was the plan? I put all those thoughts and ides rolling through my head and had this rendering done. In the end the car is almost 100% matching to it other than the side stripes. I changed them because a few years ago Ford started putting the Boss stripes on everything from new Mustangs to F150 pick ups. They became too common and very blasé now. So instead I decided to do my version of the Shelby GT350 stripes.

I'm now over 1500 labor hours and the money, well I am at least 5 times the original plan. Had I had to pay for labor, holy hell I could not have afforded the car!

This rendering was done 5 years ago. So I ask you, how close did i hit the target?

Glenn, you're very close. Depending on a person's skill level and previous exp., it's real easy to have project growth. I see that it's usually referred to as creep but explosion is more accurate. Anyone that has driven the older vehicles and is honest about how they were, is bound to want some improvements. Then if you've ridden in someone else's car and seen how good it can be, it seems to be a no brainer unless there isn't any money. I fully agree with your labor comment. I have people ask me about my labor cost in a project and I usually describe it as less than mental health counseling. If you can calculate a satisfaction value per hour, I think you were paying yourself well. :) As I see your history in paint and body, anything less than spectacular would be disappointing to you. I believe you have done very well. I would be proud to have that car in my shop. :)

I like that, creep. Lol, thats one way of putting it. In my case it was an all out about face change in direction and plan. But all in all I am very happy with it. I also agree, with my background in collision and restoration has certainly made this much easier. My current job as a training instructor for PPG has certainly given me the best of the best products at an arms reach away. I have been very fortunate for sure.

A friend just shared with me that there is an article written and posted on Hotrod Hotline about my car. I was pretty shocked to hear that as I had not been contacted by anyone about writing such an article. All the info and pictures were taken from either here on PT.com or Lat-g.com. So the guy, Tommy Parry, is on one of the two sites.

While I do appreciate the article and notoriety it brings, I am disturbed by the last paragraph and where the "writer" decided to take liberty and say that the build put my "marriage on the rocks'. This could not be further from the truth in any regard, my wife loves my cars and what I do with them. She is wholly supportive in what I do and how I do it. Never once a debate on the amount of time or money invested. Largely because the money does not come from our "house" money. My paycheck goes to everything house/family related. My car money comes from doing side work. Thats why it took seven years to build this car.

So whoever you are Tommy Parry, I didn't appreciate your added drama into the article on my car.

That hotrodhotline website is run by Internet Brands. I would not hesitate getting ahold of someone at corporate and demanding an editing of the story. Printing false damaging statements can be considered slander. It's also reckless to run a feature without letting the builder proof it.

They are also on thin ice when it comes to using your images without permission. Just because you posted the images in public, that doesn't automatically give up your right to the images. They are using the images for commercial purposes, without your permission.

The polite thing for them to have done was to get in touch with you, tell you what they want to do, ask permission to use your images, and offer you the opportunity to proof the story. I guess even that is too much in the age of instant content generation.

I have been incredibly sick for several months now and haven't had the energy or will to work on the car since coming home from the upholstery shop. Now starting to feel human again, although still not 100%, I ventured out to the garage today to play a little.

I want to make a close out panel for the font grill/rad support area. Today I made up a template in posterboard. I don't have a large enough piece of metal on hand, but just enough to make up one half. I am going to remake it out of one large pice, but wanted to go ahead and make the half just to test out how it will mount and how it will fit. So far I am very happy with its results.

Here the beginning of the part. Hope to get the full one pice made this week. Then I will trim and fit it, then paint it.

A close out panel is definitely needed to compliment or even keep up with the rest of the build quality. Some could call that finished, but not on our level.

Glenn, I can feel your pain in not feeling human for a while & being able to get out there. Had a tendon cut in left arm in aug 2016 at work & aug 2017 started hurting in what turned out to be hernia that got pushed back to being fixed 7 weeks ago, partially feeling human again. I'm sure that's different from what may be ailing you, but point is it sucks not being yourself and being able to do all the different cool schtuff you know you're capable of. Hang in there buddy.

A tendon cut, wow! That doesn't sound good. I started not feeling well back in September, at first like a common cold. But then it kept getting worse. Coughing, wheezing etc. Doctor prescribed antibiotics and prednisone, didn't help. In fact I kept getting worse. A little later, another round of the same meds. Still no better. Saw a Pulmonary specialist, inhalers and more testing, still getting worse. At this point its December and I am struggling to do anything, walking up a flight of stairs would have me completely out of breath and have my heart racing! Finally two weeks ago they did another set of chest x-rays, and say what ever I had before had finally morphed into pneumonia. Another round of meds and I am starting to feel human again. Still have a cough, and still wheeze, but at least I can do things I couldn't do as little as three weeks ago. I'm hoping this is on the way out and I can get back to normal.

Will running the panels through a bead roller shrink/stretch the metal at all?

It would suck if it messed up your dimensions after you had them fitted.

I haven't had much time to work on the car lately. I have been plugging away with the closeout panels. The first set instead of doing a bead roll it was decided to do a tapered size dimple die holes. Well, with some miscommunication between me and my first with the DD, he stamped them the wrong way, from bottom up! Lol.....

So I ended up having to make another set, I now have them in primer and as you see here they being final test fit before painting. I ended up deciding against any holes or bead rolls and letting them just be simple and clean.https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2018/02/22/IMG_4554.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/Xmqxd)

And then I got to looking at the engine compartment. I had taken the time to make and paint the upper radiator hose, but then had these ugly PCV hose and radiator overflow hoses. So what's a paint guy to do? Make up step lines and paint detail them as well.

I'm doing the Boston World of Wheels show in two weeks. After that, and once the weather clears this will be driven regularly for sure. The car has a polished stainless prop rod, but its really tall. So I made a smaller one that I will use at car shows and cruise nights. The OE on has the hood really high up, too much for my liking.

As for the health, well that has finally, hopefully permanently, turned a corner and I am feeling great again! About a month ago I had another really bad turn, I was teaching a class and couldn't get enough oxygen, would literally run out and couldn't get words out. Would have to hold my hand up and have them wait for me to catch my breath. That night I went to an Urgent Care to get checked out. Was out of work for roughly 3 weeks following that. Back to the pulomonologist, different meds and now a nebulizer with Albuterol. That seems to have done the trick as it gets deep into the lungs. I'm hoping this is all a thing of the past now. Sucks that it went on for 4 months!

Thanks for the comments on the car, as well as the concern for my health. Very much appreciated!

Glenn, My GF has all kinds of allergies and stuff, (Celiac, Asthma, etc.) But one of the worst things is "Scent induced Asthma."
She has to take an inhaler with her everywhere, and we usually try to keep her portable nebulizer with us as well.
The big triggers are ANYTHING in the Mint family (Eucalyptus, Tee Tree Oil, Mint, etc.) and Musky perfumes/colognes.

Sucks when we manage to get some time to ourselves and go out, only to have some lady who smells like she's wearing a WHOLE BOTTLE of perfume, cause her to have an attack and ruin the night.

Did they diagnose you with anything specific? Do you think it has to do with painting cars?

So just 4 days ago I posted about how ell I was doing, funny how things can go south so fast!. Over the weekend I started to sense a little change in my chest/lungs. As the weekend progressed it got more noticeable. Then Monday at work after a long conversation with a coworker I could feel again a tightening in my chest, lack of oxygen. Tuesday a little more so. Then Wednesday it all went to hell. By chance I had a follow up appt with my pulmonologist in the morning. Just walking from my car to the front reception desk had my heart racing and completely out of breath! It is so scary. The sad fact is that they don;t have a clue. In the course of a five minute conversation he changed his thoughts on the cause 4 times. In the end he prescribed another round of Prednisone and antibiotics, this is the 4th time since Jan 1, and the 6th round since October! Another round of blood work and chest x rays as well.

There seems to be no rhyme or reason behind it. My wife and I have been really paying attention to what I am doing, my surroundings, etc etc. We can't seem to pinpoint a cause either. Whether I am at work, home, in the garage or not, it doesn't seem to matter. What I fear, is that the meds I am on now will work, as they usually do. But when this course runs out it will all come back and we start all over again.

I am at a complete loss over this.

Thanks to all for your suggestions, thoughts and concerns.
