View Full Version : 98 harness and computer
I was pretty much given a automatic 98 ls1 engine harness and pcm today. harness is flawless!
is it even worth using? or should i buy a stand alone and sell off this one?

In my opinion, it really depends what you are doing to the engine. And also, are you running a 4l60E with the LS1 you are putting the harness/pcm on? Is it going to be a mild buildup, running a mass airflow sensor? If so, no reason not to use it. 98 computers are plenty tunable for most cases. However, if you are running a turbo and need 2 bar, or not running a MAF and running in speed-density, then 99 and newer PCMs are better because you can run custom operating systems in a 98 PCM. Make sense?
right now i have a fully functional carbed/t56 ls1.
i want to dump the 6 speed in favor of an auto once again. only reason for switching to FI is to run the electronics for the 4l60e.
i just picked up a very low mileage 2000 camaro 4l60e dealer replacement unit off of a friend of mine.
i am also debating just getting the TCI trans controller and leaving my current carb/gas tank/ignition system alone to save money.
a ricks efi tank alone will set me back more than the trans control unit!

You don't need a Rick's tank. A simple fuel tray setup (intank) or external tank will work just as well. Standard Rick's tanks do not have any special baffling inside to prevent fuel slosh, yet work OK on track days down to 1/2 tank, and 1/4 tank on the street.
i have a sumpped tank at the moment. i was told external fuel pumps heat up and burn out.

I say buy a stand alone harness because then you tell them exactly what you need. You call sell your harness to offset the costs.

I think the TCI unit would work well if you want to keep your carb setup. I've tuned a car with one of the TCI controllers and it worked great...
im even considering going to a th400.. i really miss driving my camaro.
i loved it in highschool with the 350/th400.
ever since i put a muncie in it i wasnt happy. then came the t56. my car has been running for 2 years now. its only seen about 300 miles. even less since the t56 has a busted 3rd gear.

find a 700r4 and you will not need the computer
I posted the harness/computer and 4l60e in the for sale section.
