how to lay out an ellispe

I thought I saw a thread on here, but anyways how do you draw one out. If you needed a piece of tubing to go through a piece of sheet metal at an angle other than 90, how would you draw it out to make the cut in the sheet metal?

You find someone with a CAD system & tell them the pipe OD & the angle & have them draw it for you?

If you can measure that angle, send it to me along with the pipe OD & I will give it a shot.

Or you could cut a bit of tubing to the angle you need, and use that to trace it.

There is also a tool that fits over the pipe & has a bunch of straight wires that surround the pipe & then you push it up to something (like another pipe or plate) & it will form to it so you can fishmouth the pipe or cut a hole.

You start out by laying out your pipe and dividing it up into equal divisions....then project it at the angle you want and simply transfer the lines across the points and this will give you your ellipse. I can show you quicker than I can explain how to do it.

The drawing I posted will also allow you to make a paper template to wrap around the pipe so you can cut it correctly....this same type of thing works for pipe to pipe connections....or any shape for that matter.

X2 on these. We use these a bunch on our custom frames that we build for equipment. Worth the investment IMO. I believe Harbor Freight even has a product similar to these now.
