Well heres my project. I sold my Nova and its time for me to begin my "new/old" project car. My 1967 GTO. Heres the rundown. Its a factory California car and absolutly rot free. Its very straight and basically the bodywork and paint is done. It was a factory 360hp H.O. auto car from the factory. It came with AC, PS,PB,PA, turbo 400 with a his/hers shifter and 3.36 gears. The car is in fantastic shape.

Its got setimental value for me. Dad and I started the car as a father son project. I drove it in highschool for a while and it spun a bearing so its sat for the last 10 years. When we built it the first time, it was done as cheap as possible just to get it running and driving. Dad and I did the best we could with it but times were tough and money was tight. Several years later I wanted to buld a racecar. Dad and I fought over it and he told me hed be gone to hell before i cut his original GTO up. So thats where the Nova came in. I had my fun with the Nova but it was a racecar at heart. I am now settled down and want a cruiser. Dad and I cut a deal about a year ago that if I wanted to build that GTO, I could, on one condition....i couldn't cut it up and anything that was done as a mod would have to be easily put back to original. I agreed so here we are. The start of a process. It might take a while, but in the end it will be worth it. The basic plans are to...

-Build a street friendly modern steering and suspension
-Richmond 5 speed
-428ci engine {it was the dealer installed factory cool motor for that year}
-4 wheel discs
-Bone stock interior and exterior with the exception of front seatss
-17 or 18" wheels

Nothing too radical, just a nice old GTO that i can drive anywhere

Heres a few pics of the car before I get to building.

Hey man, great to see another 67 GTO pro touring car being built! Let me give a few suggestions.

Is that a dealer installed 428, like a warranty engine? If so you really need to set that aside, because that is just like a original$$$$$ engine. Get yourself a late sixties early seventys 400 block and put a 4" crank in it and whalah, a cheaper and better 428. Or for the same money you could have a 461 with a 4.25 crank, and if you really want to push it, you can have a 488 with a 4.5" crank.

275 tires will be pretty much the max you can tuck in the rear. I have 295s on mine but I had to get the backspacing perfect and had to trim the wheelwell lips and massage the outer wheelhouses with a BFH. 245s will go on the front fine and I have heard that you can go bigger but mine seem pretty close.

Well I forgot that I started a project thread over here. Anyhow the direction is still similar and I have a lot of pic updates. I got it on the road last spring and drove the SOB everywhere. I mean everywhere. Weddings, work, the grocery store, family events etc. That was step #1. I cannot stand looking at something that doesn't drive. This is a long process for me. I'm a man of middle class means, a modest garage and a wife and kid to take care of before I get to wrench. Well anyhow here goes....

I got the front end all cleaned up and ready. This included welding holes shut that i had made as an idiot teenager that thought he knew what he was doing.....not too bad for a rattle can job

Then I bought an aluminum radiator from a guy on EBAY called entropytech. Its ok. I'm not overly impressed but the price was ok and the car didn't get hot all last summer like most pontiacs do so its not too bad. Although I think i have a leak somewhere now. Ill address it this spring.

Since my #1 goal was to have a driver and i didnt have the $$ to get this thing rolling on a great chassis this year, i decided to take the rear CA's out, blast them, install new bushings and box them. This will all be replaced later by an SC&C stage II setup but it worked well enough this year....

I picked up some coated hooker super comps off ebay for my traditional D port poncho. T then mated them to a 3" X pipe, with 3" dynomax ultraflos, coned from 3" to 2.5" tailpipes and exiting behind the wheels....

I picked up a craigslist .030 over 73' 455 with 6X4 heads, a performer, a 750 Q jet, all the accessory drives, starter and all for $800 bucks. What a score. Its not super fast. I would guess it at 375 hp and maybe 425 ftlbs, but it runs GREAT....

Great looking GTO. Mine is that color too with a manual and no vinyl top. I'm still on the fence of which car to do next after my Camaro, the GTO hardtop or convertible, or one of my Chevelle's.

An ebay company called entropy tech. If I was going to do it over I would have pony'd up and bought a Rodney Red unit and been done. The cutout/welded recess for the hold down clamp on the top of it is kind of off center and i think i have a leak now. It definitely kept the car cool enough for daily driver usage last summer though.

Well its been a while since I updated anything on this so here goes.....

Iv'e stuck a new interior in the car. Im staying with a stock feel for the car. There's not a lot of custom stuff planned for the body or interior. I love the stock look of this stuff and to me it keeps the flavor of the 60's. Legendary supplied all of the plush parts and trim, door panels, headliner, visors, carpet, bolstered seats, trim parts etc. TMI built the console, and its a Grant steering wheel/kit. Other than the dash and the steering column and dash pad its all been gone through. Ill get to those this winter. I am 100% happy with the Legendary stuff. I got the TMI console through Matt's Classic Bowtie's and the Grant wheel through Summit. I'm extremely happy with all of it.

I ordered some chassis stuff through SC&C. I decided a while back to go with their stage II kit after researching the heck out of this stuff. I also made the decision that I would buy stuff at leisure, bolt the parts on and see how they work as individuals. I started with The Hellwig Swaybars, Front and chassis mounted rear. They are very nice pieces and I cannot believe the difference they made over the old school WS6 bar/no rear bar I had on their previously. Its like driving a different vehicle just with these bars. Even if I was going to stick with a 100% stock resto I think I would stick these bars on. the front bar was very straight forward. The rear chassis mounted bar took about 2 hours maybe a bit more and had very easy directions. I'm very satisfied with these.

WS6 bar vs Helwig bar...

Iv'e also got a brand new 31 spline 9" trutrac that I picked up from a member here last week.

I am tired of the locker "being a locker" so its got to go. Iv'e also got Currectrac upper and lower RCA's coming in the mail. They should be here next week hopefully. Ill throw some pics up when I get them and install. That's all for now. Hopefully next time I update Ill have my new frame done, my trutrac installed with new 2.75 gears and the rest of the SC&C stage II stuff bought and ready to install. In the meanwhile i'm driving the wheels off this thing!

Grant 1178 wheel. 3162 Install kit. Buy the black billet 3 hole to 5 hole adapter. I got mine on ebay for $20. The rubber 3 hole to 5 hole adapter looks awful. Heres a link to the wheel. I also bought the Pontiac horn button.

Well since the last update I got some new stuff in and the difference is dramatic....

-I pulled the old Detroit locker and 3.0 rear gear out of my 9" and stuck a trutrac in, I got from a member here, with a stock Ford 2.75 gear I got on ebay. Couple the 2.75 gear with the Richmond's 3.27 first and 1.24 4th gear and you have the equivilant of an M21 and 3.55's. Perfect for my low revving 455. Then shift into the 1:1 5th gear for a nice 2.75 final drive. 75 MPH is now under 2500rpm with the 28" tall rear tire. The change from locker to trutrac eliminated a lot of problems, including but not limited to an annoying howling noise, mystery driveline vibration, weird clutch chatter, violent chug around corners, random clanks, pops and bangs....i'm not sure why it was so bad. Iv'e had one before that wasn't that bad but regardless, I couldn't be happier with the new Trutrac.

-I also got my Currie Currectrac rear control arms in the mail finally. They took forever to show up but they're worth it. They are beautiful pieces and seem indestructable. The upper arms are monsters compared to my other QA1's. I was surprised by their beef. I got them installed and they are quiet, smooth and bind free unlike the boxed stockers I had. I have no wheel hop now and the ride seems smoother yet. Coupled with the Hellwig sway bars and Bilstiens and I can take some hard turns recreationally while keeping the car fairly level and reasonably controlled and I can also power slide around corners at will!

-I ordered up my SPC front upper and lower A arms, aluminum adjusters, tall nascar ball joints and progressive jounce bumpers from SC&C 2 weeks ago. I got the coil springs Marc spec'd for all 4 corners as well. They should hopefully be here in another week or two but i'm not holding my breath. I'm going to hold off on shocks until I can make up my mind between Ridetech HQ's and the Varishocks. Ill run my Bilstiens for a while then upgrade this spring

-Next up is my frame. Mine is a scrambled mess according to the frame shop. Apparently after the accident it was in 25+ years ago, it was butchered by some clown that didn't know what he was doing. Awesome!! My spare is a rust free Montana piece I picked up from a local buddy about a year ago. Anyhow I wan't to have it checked out to make sure its straight before I box, powdercoat, it and stuff it under the car. I'm thinking about doing the "ABC type" of minitub mod to the frame while its out and before I powdercoat it just in case i get the itch to add the minitubs to the car when i buy 18's next year.

Anyhow i cant post pics from this POS computer i'm on, so i'm going to post the text and throw some pics up in a little bit when i get a chance....

Allright its been 3 hours and now that i'm home and on a computer made in the last decade ill post some pics. One thing is for sure.... its a bitch trying to get pics of chassis parts installed with a smartphone.

Question for anyone reading along....what should I use for body mounts? I was told the energy suspension poly pieces don't fit very well, solid aluminum pieces are loud and rough, and rubber stuff deteriorates quickly??

Any suggestions?

robbie9999

go with the original rubber, I have gone with the poly before the ride is horrible and the sweaking is beyond annoying, original rubber will not go on you unless your road racing on a daily basis

Mine seems off a little bit when I measure the body mount X's and it has a weird wrinkle in the front horn on the drivers side. I want to get that taken care of or confirmed ok before I start boxing and possibly narrowing. Thanks for the heads up on bracing the frame if i cut!

Well my frame is still in the shop and the guys over there keep pushing me off. Its kind of annoying but they are being honest about me being second fiddle... so I guess I can give that to them. In the meanwhile Ive selected my wheels and brakes. I decided to go with TRSD signature series brakes. I got them through Matts Classic Bowties here. The fronts are a 2002 Shelby Mustang caliper and the rotors are 13" C4 Vette, 28mm thick. Brackets hubs and hardware seem to be very nicely built. They are pretty nice pieces and my first impression is very good, especially for the price. Im going to hold off on the rears until im 100% sure they will fit with my rear axle narrowed 3/4" on each side. Heres a couple shots of the front brakes....

Thanks LSX! Yeah after the frame swap i'm going to measure up and order some 18" Billet specialties Mag G's and Nitto555's, 18x8 in the front and 18x9 in the back. The front tire will probably be a 245/45/18 and the rear will be an oddball its a 265/50/18. Its basically the same size sidewall profile as a 295/45/18. I don't have room for a 295 width unfortunately but I like sidewall and the full wheel well look so these look to be a good solution!

Thanks Roger! Agree on the double purchases. That always hurts. I am unfortunately redoing my brakes, wheels and tires but my dad has a 70' Chevelle that they'll be used on. He just wants 15" wheels and a quiet cruiser so they'll work perfect for him!

Well I got my frame back...finally. Its now within 2mm on the front balljoints. The frame was clean as a whistle but crooked, really crooked in spots. It took them 13.5 hours to clean it up...ouch. But now its probably better than it ever was from the factory. Most of the factory seams are really well done so i'm going to leave most of them alone. Iv'e got to clean a couple welds up but its not big deal. I decided to go with the ABC boxing kit and their solid aluminum body mounts. I also went with an isolator kit from SC&C designed for these body mounts to prevent any "unlike metal" corrosion problems that would ever occur.

I just wanted to throw something out there. Iv'e seen lots of debate on weather or not to use a 110v fluxcore welder on frame work. While I wouldn't use it to build an entire chassis or ever consider one professionally, the little flux core Lincoln 120v welder might make some ugly ass welds and spatter all over but penetration seems fine and i'm pretty sure it shouldn't be any problem keeping the boxing plates in place. Ill just have to do a little extra work cleaning the welds up a bit with an angle grinder.

I'm about done tacking my plates in and ill start filling soon....

I have done a lot of thinking on the minitub setup and I decided against it. Its pretty expensive if you use the ABC parts, it appears to be very time consuming and I just cant bring myself to cut the original sheet metal up.

I have a 4.5" backspace on the fronts and 5.5" in the rear. I think that a deeper backspace in the front would have helped with clearance at the top so that I could lower the car, but I am not sure that it would have helped where it rubs at the bottom of the wheel opening on both sides since the wheel will travel across this area when the wheel is turned no matter what the backspace. I had the rears figured out when I bought my wheels, but the fronts were a crapshoot based on what I had read in other posts. I do think that a 245/40 would have cleared. I would post a picture but I cant seem to get that to work.

Wheel rubs on the lower part of the opening on both sides when wheel is turned.

This is actuall the rear tire on the front. I ordered the rears first and then test fit them to see if I liked the sidewall thickness. The distance from the hub to the outside of the rim is actuall the same on front and rears with my offsets so you get the idea.
87584

Actual photo of the front and rears installed. I took this in the parking lot of the bodyshop where she is getting bodywork and a Lava Red paint job. I should get it back in a couple of weeks.

275 wide tire clears with no problem but needed to push out the outside lip of the wheel well.

Hey Merry Christmas to....ME!

The mounts where a bit more than advertised because Pontiac apparently had an extra body mount as opposed to Buick, Olds and Chevy....huh. I never knew that.

-ABC black anodized body mounts and hardware kit
-Savitzke's little fiberglass/rubber isolators for them. aparently to avoid corrosion between unline metals and eliminate squeaking associated with solids.

The last few weeks iv'e been limited on time. This frame boxing takes forever. I bet I have 20 hours in it at this point. Tack and move, tack and move. Anyhow Iv'e been making progress. I'm about 75% done welding and iv'e done some grinding to clean the fluxcore welds up. It should look pretty clean when i'm done. You can see some of the spots where the welds are clean vs where they are raw yet. The fluxcore welder seems to be working out just fine but there's no denying the welds are ugly. I can lay a row of dimes with it.... but they are some dirty/spattered looking dimes...haha

Got a little work done today...

I had a hole in my frame for no good reason. It looked like someone used a cutting torch and cut it out years ago. I'm not sure why someone would do this? Anyhow I got that cleaned up with some 1/8" steel....

Well I got my rear rails pretty much finished. They really didnt turn out too bad for an old fluxcore welder and a 4.5" dewalt angle grinder! Ive got a little bit of clean up to do yet but ill be ready to finish the front frame rails this weekend.

Back from the blast and powder coat. I was torn between a semi-gloss black and satin black. I went with the satin. It turned out great. The little weird spots you might see are dried snow. The weather in Iowa has been horrible all winter. When I brought it home Friday/Saturday it was no exception. Anyhow...I'm extremely satisfied with the work done here.

Then I got to the SPC upper A arms, SPC lower A-Arms, SPC coil springs, Howe tall ball joints and Hellwig sway bars. This will compliment my Currectrac RCA's and rear chassis mounted Hellwig sway bar to round out the SC&C chassis. Currently there are Bilstiens in between the A arms but a call to Ridetech got me a set of smooth body HQ's coming my way very shortly.

Heyohhhhh...look what was on my doorstep when I got home from work this morning!!!

New Ridetech smoothbody HQ shocks with 24 adjustable rebound settings. Bret Volkel made me a deal here a week or so ago when I was asking for feedback on them in the suspension section. Here is what he said....

How about you try them and write a review? If you don't like them, put that in the review and send them back for a full refund. When you call the shop, ask for Darren. I'll share this offer with him.

I'd say one of the reasons you've not seen any feedback yet is because the harsh weather all over the country has kept everyone's cars inside. The HQ smoothbody was not released until later last year...sale took off during this winter, but many of these cars possibly have not hit the road yet this spring.

Bret Voelkel

Air Ride Technologies, Inc.

How can I pass that up? I basically get to try them out risk free as long as I review them on here and ill stick to my end of the deal. It made my decision easy. It was between Varishocks and Ridetech HQ's. If I run these and hate them, I can send them back for a full refund. From the Ridetech love I see around here though, i'm guessing I probably wont be sending them back. SWEET! Thanks for the offer Bret!

Yeah. I don't have time to do anything crazy right now. I'm 31, with a wife, kid, and a job that requires a lot of time on an off shift. I do what I can when I can and just enjoy my hotrod as a driver. Some of the 1 year basketcase builds I see on here are nuts. The boys must spend every single minute they have free in the garage....i have to say i'm a bit jealous and more power to them. The truth is I probably have another 2-4 years left on this car with my limited time allowance. One big improvement at a time!

Well I installed the HQ's the other day. I talked to ridetech and they were pretty stern that I should be mounting these through the lower A arm hole and not on top of the spacers. It could have messed with available wheel travel. I had to get the die grinder and carbide bur out and do just a hair of clean up on the SPC lower A arm and spacers. Maybe a minutes total grinding on each lower arm. The HQ's just wouldn't fit through. I probably took out less than .080 total between both sides on each arm. I really just cleaned it up and they slid right in from the bottom. Mounted up with grade 8 hardware and that was it!

After a bunch of reassembly I took the GTO out on the first shakedown drive. I haven't even gotten an alignment yet. I just used a level and made the front wheels level and pointing straight. I probably logged 15 miles. My first impression....this thing handles awesome and was/is worth every penny iv'e stuck in it and every hour put tward it. Here is me initial reaction to the short drive I took it on today...

-I can now make a full left turn where I couldn't before with my old jacked up frame.

-I have no ackerman shudder on sharp turns where I had it pretty bad with my other frame

-It feels like its glued to the road and I don't even have an alignment in it yet let alone good wheels and tires. Against my better judgement, I took some pretty hard corners and a long sweeping left hand run down an interstate, it never felt out of control and it felt like it had a lot more in it if the tires would hold.

-The Ridetech HQ shocks/SPC springs must really like each other. I have the 24 position shocks at 12 clicks in the front and 8 in the rear. The ride quality was super smooth and much better than the Bilstiens/stock springs I had before. I think I can make it better with some tuning after my alignment.

-The ABC aluminum body mounts/SC&C isolaters were not noticeable at all. I heard no squeaking, the ride quality was great. In fact much smoother and quieter than the stock springs/bilstiens/rubber bushings.

My only issue right now is ride height and this is where coilovers would shine. I'm off from side to side by about 1/2" in front and 1/2"-3/4" in the rear. Iv'e swapped rear springs around and that did nothing so it cant be a rear coil spring mismatch. I looked at the front springs and they are now sitting in their pockets in the frame correctly. I loosened everything up, removed swayabars and shocks and cycled the suspension. There is not a bind anywhere. Its smooth as glass and well lubed. The suspension is just off. If I get a 1/2" spacer in the rear for the driver side rear, I think it will clear most of the problem up. If i'm within a 1/4" side to side i'm calling that a victory for a 45 year old car.

Any other suggestions on where to look on my suspension for ride height discrepancies? I did find that the driver rear spring is compressed a half inch farther than the passenger side but i swapped springs around and that did nothing.

all suggestions are welcome.

A couple of shots...

Out with the new...in with the really new??

All back together where we started!! It was a huge undertaking and im still working out the ride height difference side to side but its good to have it in one piece!

Nick great write up and review.

Did you drive the car with the Bilstien shocks and the new suspension hardware first before driving with the HQ's?

You said the ride was not harsh. I assume the potholed roads are the same in Waterloo as in CR. Any further comments on the ride quality over our crappy roads?

How much drop did the SPC springs give you? I think they are rated at 1.5 drop correct? A bit hard to judge the ride height at that angle.

Nice to hear the solid body mounts are working for you. That always seem to be point of varying opinions.

What size sway bars were used front and back? Was the back sway bar the one that SC&C sells, that is adjustable?

I just switched from KYB to Ridetech shocks on my Firebird, and it made a huge difference in ride quality. I have the adjustments set at the middle (HQ shocks). Worth every penny.

No unfortunately I did not. I should have though. Again the ride quality is much better though and I havent even messed with the shock settings. Im at 12 in the front and 8 in the back.

You said the ride was not harsh. I assume the potholed roads are the same in Waterloo as in CR. Any further comments on the ride quality over our crappy roads?

Pot holes are terrible and ride quality in a Caddy up here sucks. Ride quality is a relative term given the roads are just horrible. I can say with certianty, on a smooth open surface its awesome. On potholed roads its pretty decent though it is a 45 year old car. Ill be messing with settings and logging ride quality from now until I swap to my 18's later on this spring and keeping track of what I think and write it all up later on.

How much drop did the SPC springs give you? I think they are rated at 1.5 drop correct? A bit hard to judge the ride height at that angle.

More than I thought they would. They are lower than my stock springs with 1.5 coils cut out and I have the maximum amount of spacers in there. This is a common wish I think that the springs were an inch or two taller. If I took all the spacers out my headers would be on the floor.

Nice to hear the solid body mounts are working for you. That always seem to be point of varying opinions.

Again it was just my first impression but they seem to be a non factor and supposedly a huge difference maker for handling quality. It could be the little Savitske isolaters killing any NVH coupled with Ridetech shocks and SPC springs allowing for the smoother ride? The way I see it is that its kind of like welding the body to the frame and making it a solid piece allowing the shock and spring to completely dictate ride quality? Its basically like driving a unibody car? I dont know . Its just a thought. I'm going to pay close attention though and write something up about them later on this summer after I log some miles.

What size sway bars were used front and back? Was the back sway bar the one that SC&C sells, that is adjustable?

I think the front is 1-1/4" and the rear is 1"?? I cant remember exactly but they are the bars SC&C sells. The rear bar is adjustable. It has 3 settings. I'm going to mess with them too eventually. The loosest one/ farthest out is street. Ive only used this one so far and the tightest is for autox/roadrace I believe. Its a very nice bar and they made a huge difference last summer even with the stock springs and A arms still in the car.

Well I got my ride height pretty close. At this point im about 1/4" from side to side and it changes depending on how level the concrete is and how the car stopped. If I stop the car and measure it, then wiggle the car side to side the ride height might change by 1/2" depending on how it settles. Anyhow I had to make a plate out of steel to match the SC&C spacers I got with my A arms to make it happen but in the end its ok and I think i'm done messing with it. Here are the spacers you get with the SC&C spec'd lower A arms. The one I made out of 1/4" plate with a sawzall, hole saw, drill bits and a dremel tool/carbide bit is pretty obvious....

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/04/IMG_20140403_162720_507_zps4e71c4ae-1.jpg (http://s239.photobucket.com/user/novaguy73/media/GTO%20Chassis%20mods/IMG_20140403_162720_507_zps4e71c4ae.jpg.html)

I also go my alignment all setup in the car. It took the guy about 2 hours to get it right and he used to set up Indy cars from my understanding. He took it out and drove it made some changes a few times and the job totalled about 2 hours. I'm glad i didn't try to do it....

Here are the final specs....They are spot on to what SC&C recommend. SC&C gave 3 specs. Street. Street/track. Track. After talking to Marc I went with the Street/Track setting. I am VERY happy with the end result here. It was a ton of research, work and money but the car handles like a champ even with the 15" wheels and 60 series tires on it and rides smooooooth. Iv'e heard the 18's and modern tires make a massive difference as well. I'm pretty excited for that to happen later on.

Well iv'e had some more goodies show up. The next few things up on the list are Brakes, wheels and tires.....

If you've been keeping up with my thread you'll notice this is the second big brake kit Iv'e gotten for the GTO. I sold the TRSD kit to a PY guy and moved on the these. I think the TRSD kit would have worked well and it was very nice but after some conversations with Tobin and others, I decided this was the right move to make.

Some more brake parts show up the last few days. My front brakes are partially from Kore3.com. I'm sure iv'e said it before but Tobin @ Kore3 is awesome. The guy is a wealth of knowledge, promptly answered every email I sent and at this stage of the game, nothing gets me to buy like knowledge and top shelf customer service. Its worth every penny.

-So the front brakes are basically 2012 Corvette C6-Z51. The Z51 rotors are a 13.4" diameter and 32mm thick and a step up from the standard 12.7" C6 rotor for just a little more money. I opted for Stoptech slotted rotors. I found that they sell matching LS1 rears and Z51 fronts. This was hard to find. Since Tobin doesn't sell these I google shopped them and then beat Summit racing up on the price like I always do. They price matched and shipped free staying good to their word...and I really beat them up on these.

There are a couple reasons these are hard to match front and rear. First the Z51 is a totally different rotor than the stock C6. Also while the LS1 rear calipers are the same thing as C5/6 and the LS1 rotors have the same dimensions as C5, the LS1 rear e-brake setup is a bit different, so C5 rotors wont work. I also decided to steer away from drilled rotors. According to everyone that's ever tracked a car, a drilled rotor is prone to cracking under lots of stress and are really just a bling thing. Slots are functional and remove gasses.

-The brackets are Tobin's standard C5/C6 bracket.

-The calipers are twin 40.5mm piston aluminum C6. Though similar in appearance, the C6 are more rigid than the C5. The abutments are Z51 and allow for the extra rotor area.

-I also got Tobins flexcore stainless flex lines for the whole car. They appear to be top notch and the C5/C6 rear lines they sell will work with the LS1 calipers since they are basically the same thing.

-Since I intend to go to the AFX aluminum spindle/hub eventually I didn't want to spend the $300 bucks on Tobin's sweet ass aluminum hubs. I found out that stock drum brake hubs will work as long as they are under 5.95" in diameter. Most stockers will need to be turned down though. I bought some brand new ones from CPP for $55 bucks with bearings, caps and hardware. I was pleased to find that they were already at 5.95" in diameter!! After sticking in some American bearings, longer wheel studs and painting them....ill probably have $100 total, saving $200 bucks tward the AFX spindles/hubs/arms later on.

-Brake pads are Hawk HPS {High Performance Street} Recommended by Tobin.

I also picked up some ebay LS1 2002 Camaro rear brakes. I'm going to blast and paint them. Rebuild the calipers with new seals and pins and run them.

Here's some pics!...

I'll be actuating the new brakes with a Detroit Speed and Engineering "TYPE" of 9" dual diaphragm power brake booster and an aluminum 1" master cylinder. Notice I said "TYPE". Its not from DSE. I did some looking and found the part #'s I believe DSE uses and collected parts on my own through Amazon, eBay and Summit and put it together for $175 less than DSE wants for the exact same thing. If you're interested ill show you how!

So let me start with the booster/master combo....

This is a Tuff Stuff 9" dual diaphragm, black powder coated, power booster, powder coated mounts and Wilwood adjustable proportioning valve/mount through Summit. On it, sits an ACDelco 18M974 aluminum master cylinder with plastic reservoir and screw on cap from a right hand drive 2000 S-10. I got this through Amazon dirt cheap. The pedal clevis/extension comes from Pirate Jack on eBay. This is what Tobin @ Kore3 says will work best with the Z51 Vette/LS1 rear style brakes and pretty much what GM ran from the factory on these cars...and it will bolt right in!

I don't think the wheels i'm ordering will have the clearance for the Z06 stuff unfortunately. According to the templates i saw on the Kore 3 website those calipers are massive. I think the only guys iv'e seen running them have forged wheels and forged wheels are just not my thing for this car. I friggen love this car. This car was why I chose the MAG Gs' the only difference is that mine will have a bit taller tires front and rear. The above car is running 245/40/18's and 255/45/18's. I want to run Nitto555's in a 245/45/18 @26.7" tall in the front and a 265/50/18 in the rear @ 28.4" tall. It should give just about the same rake as this car and fill the wells up a bit more with plenty of clearance. Contrary to most PT folks... I think the 67' GTO's almost have to have a bit of rake to look right. Not a lot....just a touch.

Some pretty impressive GTO's on this thread. I went with Kore3 brakes on mine, and am very happy with the whole package. I went with the Z06 set up front and rear, here are some pics of the rotor mockup. The Flexcore hoses that Tobin makes up are really nice, he made a set with -3 AN fittings for my deal.

I haven't decided on wheels yet, but I think we are going to have to CNC up some custom 18" wheels. The tires are 335-18 for the rear, and 295-18 for the fronts, we are going to try and CNC machine a Pontiac Ralley I in 18 x 12 for the rears and 18 x 10 for the fronts. We'll use the factory inner caps.

Thanks for the comment. RS uses factory C6 front spindles, so these brakes drop right in. The calipers can go on either side, but you want to be sure the bleed ports are facing up. You can see the two ports in both photos with the black rubber plugs.

One thing we're going to try which is a little out of the box, is we're using manual (no power) brakes. The original plan was for hydro-boost, but after talking to Tobin we're going to try manual brakes. He sent the master cylinder with the correct bore size for manual brakes, so we'll see.

The reason is to get good pedal feel and brake modulation for auto cross.

Thanks for the comment. RS uses factory C6 front spindles, so these brakes drop right in. The calipers can go on either side, but you want to be sure the bleed ports are facing up. You can see the two ports in both photos with the black rubber plugs.

I run manual brakes with C6 Z06 front and LS1 rears. Works very well. I started with a 15/16" bore MC, but have since moved to a 7/8" bore Mopar MC and like the change.

i drive manual brakes daily on the street, c5 fronts, ls rears. i'm pretty sure i have a 1" disc disc master... the pedal is firmer than most cars but not so bad you can't get into it. I love it, if you like a firm pedal you'll like it. if you like the soggy pedals todays cars come with you'll hate it...

Sure like the rims in the 1967 above, you just gotta love a lowered GTO with the right stance-nothing better.

1965 GTO, 461 Stroker, Holley EFI, Roadster Shop Chassis.

A couple things....

-You really need to start a build thread

-If you can figure out how to CNC up some rally 1's in 18" and reuse the stock centercap, for a reasonable price .....you might have a product on your hands that people would go bat**** for. I cannot count how many times ive seen guys looking for these.

My gauge cluster is in serious need of repair. The speedometer needs fixed asap as it grinds and bounces. The clock doesn't work etc and its just a stock dash. I'm seriously considering this setup to stick behind a stock dash. It bolts in...what do you guys think? Would that look good behind a wood grain dash? Would I need to make a different insert to go over the woodgrain to make it look right?

The link is to the entire product line. I can get all different backing colors, gauge colors etc. It comes bolt in ready and hooks up to everything. The price seems stiff but im sure getting my stock stuff rebuilt or buying a rally setup wouldn't be cheap.

Well in a complete turn of events I decided I have driven this car for too long without tunes.... but I haven't had time to work on it myself so for the first time ever...I paid someone to do something to my car. It felt weird. Anyhow I talked to a local audio shop and had them install some stuff for me. It turned out great and i'm really glad I let them do it.

I bought one of those eBay GTO glove box install kits. The install guy said it was awesome and he couldn't believe it was only $60 bucks. He said it saved him a bunch of time and literally fell in with no mods needed.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/06/20140606_180533_zpsf1791852-1.jpg (http://s239.photobucket.com/user/novaguy73/media/audio/20140606_180533_zpsf1791852.jpg.html)

I went with Memphis audio 6-1/2" speakers inside of custom autosound kick panels in front. I went with 3 way Memphis audio 6x9's in the rear. The kick panels seem like really good quality. The only issue is that the ebrake pedal needed to be moved over quite a bit...yeah actually a lot

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/06/20140606_180559_zps5dd8c5f6-1.jpg (http://s239.photobucket.com/user/novaguy73/media/audio/20140606_180559_zps5dd8c5f6.jpg.html)

The install guy made a piece of wood that sits on top of the stock shelf just like the package tray but thicker. It aparently is carved out on the back to fit the coutour of the speakers below. The 6x9's are mounted underneath. He insisted he wanted it to have a stock type of appearance with no speakers poking through. I could tell he hated that look so I let him just do his thing. This was his solution and I think it turned out great...

A couple of pics...

I got some 06' GTO seats from my buddy Bob {old66tiger} I installed them in the old girl today. I'm extremely happy I did this. My maiden voyage with them was fantastic. I'm honestly pissed at myself that I spent a boat load of $ trying to restore the stock seats with the Legendary Rallye setup at this point. I'm trying to decide if i'm going to sell them. I might let someone else have them at a good price instead of storing them for the next 40 years....

Anyhow the 06' GTO seats are awesome. They sit great, have 8 way power mobility and are about the same weight as stock seats based on the lower back-o-meter. Iv'e heard these sit up too high. That's why I was hesitant in the first place. Anyone that says they "sit up too high" must have been 6'9" and had stock buckets with broken springs in the lower seat before. I'm 6'1" + a touch and I sit in them great. They go back far enough that I can't reach the pedals and leave me with a solid 2" above my head which was better than anything I had before. I would say they are a touch lower than my newly stuffed stockers.

I did however reuse my 3" seat relocation brackets I made for the stock buckets. I figured it would allow me to run the seats forward to fit me correctly and hide the bracketry I made. I used a couple pieces of 1/8" x 1.5" wide x 3.25" long steel for the front. I used 3/16" x 1.5" angle iron for the rears. I shaved the rear angle iron down to 1" so it would clear the floor and give max headroom. Then its 12v on the red wire and a ground on the black. The install is pretty easy and straight forward. I'm going to make a thread detailing what is needed to get it done on PY and ill link it here is anyone is interested. If you have tools and and know what to do it's probably like a 4-5 hour job.

I installed 04 GTO seats in my 72 and used the factory 72 brackets. I lost a few perks of the seat but it still has power recline. I've seen them installed way to often sitting to high and didn't want that. I also had them recovered to match 72 factory style. LOL not many people even notice, Its pretty funny. It would be nice to have all the seat perks and still sit at the correct height but I think that would require altering the floor pan. Love your build and thanks for keeping it Pontiac powered!!

I cannot comment on how they would fit in a 2nd gen A body, but in my 67' with my 3" relocation brackets and 1" rear angle iron mount the seats clear the floor, I retained all the power functions and I actually sit in them lower than the stock stuffed legendary rallye seats I had. Head room isnt an issue for me and i'm a real 6'1"-6'2", barefoot.

On another note....those seats really look like they belong in there after the recover. I might have to consider that. Nice work!

So I bit the bullet and bought one of those wheelrite tools. I ended up buying tires from Summit. First, finding them cheaper everywhere else on the interwebz and beating Summit up on the price match. I went with Nitto555's. 245/45/18 fronts and 265/50/18 tires in the rear......yep 50 series tires in the rear. I like sidewall and a filled up wheel well in the rear. Its probably some kind of deep seeded issue from when I was a 12 year old kid, reading carcraft and drooling over all the pro street stuff......regardless I like it that way so were going to try the 28.4" rear tire and hope it fills nicely. Iv'e got some time off this week so im hoping to get a few issues with the car figured out, then remeasure my wheel spacings and get my wheels ordered.

Definitely going with Mag G's from Billet Specialties. I was considering the polished Weld S-71 for a little while. They had a $100/wheel rebate going through August. I decided I couldn't justify the extra money and I wanted timeless wheels that wouldn't ever "date" themselves.....I think the Mag G's will fit that look well.

A lot of stuff going on but Ive been forgetting to take pictures....

I got a curveball thrown at me a few weeks ago. Heard a nasty clunking noise when I was trying to start the car. Found out that I sheered some teeth off of the ring gear on my flywheel. I believe it was caused by an issue within my starter. This also mangled the pinion gear on my starter. The starter is at RobbMc for repair and I got the flywheel re-ringed locally.

Since I was going to be in there anyhow, I ended up buying a Ram clutch from Bob {old66tiger} My clutch works great but its pretty aggressive and I wanted something smooth and reliable. The old clutch grabs fast and takes a little getting used to. Ill probably never put a set of slicks on it so the dual friction clutch I had in there was probably overkill. It will be for sale soon.

The Richmond 5 speed is leaking oil and it needed some seals and it scratches on a power shift into second gear now. Its 15 years old and had the crap beat out of it its whole lift so i'm not even mad. Iv'e got some synchronizers and seals coming and ill probably do the rebuild next week. If you have a richmond 5 speed do yourself a favor and shop around. I got seals from autoplicity for literally 20 bucks as opposed to 125 bucks that summit wanted. Yes I mean that literally. Same parts. What was going to cost me $375 bucks through summit, ended up costing me $175 bucks just by shopping around.

I also got my rear axle centered up with advice from Savitske. Apparently its common for these cars to have the rear axle off center a hair. Mine was a 1/4" too far to the passenger side making wheel measurements hard to take. So I turned my adjustable upper rear control arms a half a turn each. The driver side was shortened a 1/2 turn. The passenger side lengthened a 1/2 turn. Done deal. Perfectly centered rear axle. It wont mess with pinion angle either. Marc is the man. I also took my final measurements for wheels. Measure twice, cut once right? It looks like the verdict is 18x8 5" backspacing in front and 18x9" 5.75" backspacking in the rear. I'll be ordering on Monday or Tuesday.

Trying my hand at some new seals and synchronizers in the old Richmond 1:1 Street 5 speed. Iv'e actually never pulled a transmission apart before. Sorry about all the pics. Im a little excited about messing with the guts of a transmission!

I definitely had some brass in the oil when I drained it. It was starting to scratch in second on a hard shift and was leaking pretty good out of the shift arm seals so it was time. Iv'e had it for a long time and I bought it used then. It's been ran hard for years and still looks pretty darn good inside!

Last night I got everything pulled apart and cleaned out. New shift arm seals installed and part of it reassembled. Ill be finishing it up in a few hours. Here's where I got last night....

Well after a few setbacks {as usual} I got the 5 speed back together this evening. New seals and synchronizers. The 3rd 4th, 5th synchros were fairly easy. One gear was a little stiff to get off but I got it. Then I found out that you have to press the front bearing off to do the first and second gear cluster. I was under the impression that it could all be done with hand tools. This is not the case. With a press its an easy job though. Anyhow my buddy Jeff at Goodyear 5th street tire let me use his press and we got it all done on Thursday. I need to stop being a cheap ******* and buy a press. After reassembly I shifted through the gears and everything felt smooth. Looking forward to getting this in and rolling through some gears tomorrow.... Here's a few shots of the reassembly....

Wheels are ordered.

18x8 5" BS in front. 18x9" 5.75" BS in the rear. Billet Specialty Mag G's was the final call. Now the waiting game starts. Newstalgia Wheel says 3-4 weeks.

Pretty exciting to make progress, but I'm more excited about the Malibu in the garage!!!

Quick fun facts about the 70' Malibu.... My aunt bought it new. My dad has owned it since the early 70's. My sister drove it in highschool in the late 80's and I was the last one to drive it in high school circa 1998. Its all there, original as it gets and pretty much rust free. 350/350 car. PS,PB,AC,rear window defog, delco 8track, bench seat, column shift, tilt. It was a real cruiser. Anyhow there's been a deal made for it. After I get the GTO done its going to be my next project but i'm a few years off from that. Iv'e already been dreaming though. Leave the patina. Ridetech coilover chassis. Junkyard LS conversion, 700R4 or 4l60, 18's over C6 brakes etc......

It was leaking oil and was scratching horribly on a hard shift into 2nd. Its a 15 year old tranny that's been beat to hell and back so i'm not even mad about synchros and seals. The work was actually fun and its like a new transmission now. Well worth my time.

It might be time to toss some synchros in your 6 speed? It really wasn't too hard. Two quick pointers if you decide to do the synchros and seals. Make sure you have access to a hydraulic press for the front bearing and make sure you google shop around the Richmond part #'s. I found seals that Summit wanted 20 bucks for, on autoplicity, for like 7 cents. Yeah 7 cents... and they were even SKF seals. WTF?? I think I saved well over $150 bucks shopping it out.

Dosen't the dog ring conversion require double clutching on downshifts?

As i'm currently waiting on wheels to show up I thought I would throw a quick few pics of my painted brakes. Nothing overly exciting but progress is progress. Friday i'm going to bake them in a buddies oven to cure. Iv'e got the coolest wife ever but i'm pretty sure she would f'ing kill me if I did that in our oven. Anyhow they turned out pretty good other than the hubs. The hubs look like dog ****...LOL. That's ok I guess as long as they don't rust!? I might end up pulling the front brake brackets back off, then blasting and painting them too if it looks like crap back there behind the wheels. The other day I didn't have access to a blast cabinet so for now they will stay zinc coated.

I have a Moser 9" with #7900 housing ends. That's a 9" Torino bearing inside a 12bolt backing plate pattern. I decided that instead of pressing my old axle bearings off and buying new ones just to get the backing plates on, I would just cut the 02' Camaro backing plate in half. Before I did this I talked to Tobin @ Kore3. He thought it would be just fine but advised that if I cut it in between the caliper bracket bolt bosses that I should somehow brace it. So that's what I did. I braced first. Then made my cut. It turned out nice and shouldn't be an issue......here's a few shots...

coolness, i may in the future get the same 9" rear setup so i can still use ls rear brakes... but then if you think about it explorer brakes are like $50 and PBR makes the mustang brakes so it stands to reason they're like the same brakes, from digging aroung my mustang projects i can sure say that the parking brake on an explorer is identical to the ls ones in my 12 bolts....

your brakes look awsome man. trying to piece a getup for the front of my tempest now...

pretty cool idea on the caliper bracket

really the 4 bolts on the flange should provide enough clamping force to prevent it from separating, add in the actual caliper and its more than enough, but I think the little bracket that goes between the caliper ears is good as well.

maybe you could have had some one fab a cross brace that used the caliper ears?

When I talked to Tobin about it he just suggested that I reconnect the two halves somehow just to be sure the caliper wouldn't distort anything under pressure. I'm thinking this should do?

Thanks for the tips. Dog-rings just need to be rev-matched for quick downshifting or you can double clutch just driving around town.

Yea I think its more than enough

if you think about it, in order for the halves to separate you would need to shear/yield an axle hub bolt, AND deform the actual caliper/cage

and thats alot of required load

the caliper cage essentially does the same thing the added bracket does

Hey I'm curious about this Jeep steering box swap, haven't seen that before. What other parts did you need to get it to work right? Thanks!

Hey there. Well It requires the Jeep box, the 1970-later power steering regulator, stock power steering lines and power steering pitman arm work, 2-5 dollar aluminum fittings from Lee Mfg. and an autozone ragjoint. I did a thread on it on another board. Its a bolt in deal. Let me dig for a link. It was a few years ago now and I don't remember all the info but its a really common swap. A quick google search should bring up threads on boards about it.....

Well its time to post up some shots of the new brakes, wheels and tires. I'm still working on the master cylinder, booster and lines. I should get those done this weekend and ill update.

-Billet Specialty Mag G's
-Fronts are 18x8 with a 5" BS and a 245/45/18 Nitto555
-Rears are 18x9 with a 5.75" BS and 265/50/18 Nittto555
-Front brakes are Kore3 Z51 with Stoptech slotted rotors
-Rear brakes are 2002 Camaro with Stoptech slotted rotors
-Both ends have Hawk HPS pads

I ended up with a 1/4" spacer in the rear. I was torn between 5.5" BS and 5.75"....Well 5.75 worked but 5.5 would have been perfect. I wanted to error on the side of being able to push them out as opposed to having to trim the wells so that's where my decision was made. Fronts are spot on

This spring I might mess with ride height. I'm going to drive it as is for a bit and then lower the front 1" Its sitting a bit high I think....well here she is

2 updates pieced together from my PY thread....

Who would have thought that in Waterloo, Iowa on December 14th I would be able to go outside and drive the car? It was 53* and we've had a few rains since the last time they salted the roads, so I got the car out and did a little work then took it for a run.

As much as I wanted the CPP hubs to work out and save myself some coin, I just couldn't keep my mind off of them. They came with Chinese crap bearings and the studs were too short for anyone to properly use on anything and since I bought them, iv'e read about a guy having issues cracking them. The front hubs are a critical component of safety and I intend to Auto-X this car and drive a lot.... so I bit the bullet for peace of mind, called up Kore3 and just bought Tobin's hub kit like I should have in the first place. The kit isn't cheap but its American made out of 6061-T6511 billet aluminum and that makes me feel a heck of a lot better about driving hard. I put the hubs in and reassembled my brakes.

So I took it out and bedded the Hawk HPS pads in. I put about 10 miles on the car and my final analysis of the swap from 15" wheels and 11" brakes to 18" wheels and 13.4"/12" brakes is 100% positive. I was worried I was going to sacrifice ride quality but I think I might have actually gained ride quality believe it or not. Its at least a wash, I certainly did not lose any ride quality. I'm not sure if its that the Nitto555 tires are just superior in tech to the BFG TA's or that I have a little extra sidewall compared to the typical 40 series tires a lot of guys run with the car but i'm pretty impressed. I just wished it was completely dry out so I could have driven it really hard.

I also ordered up some flat caps on EbAY to replace the bubble caps on the wheels. I think i'm going to run the open lug's/flat caps for a while to give it a bit of the vintage trans am series look with the gray wheels.....

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/12/20141214_124131_zpsqhxgtuzt-1.jpg (http://s239.photobucket.com/user/novaguy73/media/Brakes/20141214_124131_zpsqhxgtuzt.jpg.html)

.....Well I got my flat caps in the mail yesterday. They are very nice quality and fit perfect. I got them from a guy on ebay. His business sticker will be pictured below. I got a chance to put them on and snap a few shots and drive for one last time this year. The car is filthy but oh well.....i drive it, so that happens. I think the nose needs to come down just a 1/2" for a touch of rake. Right now its about level.

In reflection it's been a heck of a year for progress.....The entire new boxed frame and SC&C chassis, Ram clutch, Kore3 Z51 braking system, Mag G wheels and tires, rebuilt 5 speed, 06' GTO seats. All in and working. I'm glad my wife is cool and likes my hobby. On that note this winter I'll be taking a bit of a break from the car. I have my second child ...a baby boy, due today so in the next week he will be here. My only winter project will probably be my speedhut/stock dash and a tilt steering column and those will probably take me all winter.....so here's a few shots of the car with the flat caps and open lugs....again I know I need to bring the nose down a bit but ill get that in the spring!

How much clearance is there between the caliper and the back of the wheel spoke on the fronts? I have z51 brakes with the raised corvette logo and wonder if the mag g's will fit.

Thanks for the nice words. I didn't use a breaker. I used a port on my fuse blocks that said "fused" so I'm assuming it's part of one of the fuses. I also had some 14 or16 gauge wire laying around so that's what I used. I think its MTW. I'm sure it's fine. It's only pulling amperage while it's in motion and it didn't pull much anyhow.

Got my Speedhut gauges in the mail so I thought I would hook them up fast and see how they look. It took a while to get them but they are very nice quality. Iv'e seen a couple guys fit these behind stock 66-67 GTO dashes without making any cuts and it looks really sharp. Almost factory install clean. I did a Volt/Fuel gauge, 140mph GPS speedometer, 8K tach with programmable shift lights, and a oil/water gauge.

The layout is kind of similar to that of the stock rally gauges and they come with a dimmer switch that can be mounted anywhere. In the pics the color is turned all the way up. Honestly the nighttime colors are much more bold in the pics than they look in person. I'm not sure if its a glare thing or my phone camera or what but they are much easier on the eyes in person.

Here they are....

Today I got the Speedhut gauges mounted to the dash. I'm really happy with how it came out. I used...

-Template from Bob {Old66tiger}
-1/4" ABS plastic from Ebay
-3-7/8" holesaw from ebay
-7/32 drillbit, drilled at 15* for proper mounting
-1" #6 screws and washers to mount the panel

I think it turned out great! Once I got everything set where I wanted it, I trimmed a lot of the excess plastic off around the edges. No sense in having that in the way. I also had to modify the metal bracket that holds the ignition switch and lighter but that was no big deal.

Next up is spraying the metal bezel and plastic dash! I'm going to use a Krylon satin black and Spaz Stix chrome paint and see how it comes out.

it will make it more chrome like, the flat stuff will make it look powdery and not smooth

basically like not sanding the primer before you shoot color

Spaz Stix actually sells a base coat for the chrome, but its just gloss black paint

Well a bit of an update....

Not too much has gone on but i'm really sick and bored out of my mind.... so here goes. Its February, the actual temp was -24 this morning and I don't have a heated garage so nothing is getting done. I do however have some time off in March where i'm going to get a bunch of stuff done.

I tried my best to make the stock dash, I talked about above, work with a cleaning and painting. It looked horrible. That was a complete failure. I'm not sure if I just couldn't get all the contamination/old armorall off the dash but it just looked horrible. So for now all of this is going to go behind my current dash that's in the car. Its not in bad shape but it needs redone. Ames sells a re-pop dash that's supposed to be really nice but they are off like a 1/16" and they don't have the nice stain-able wooden insert that fits the AC cars yet. They said this summer it should be available. I'm not going to hold my breath so ill just live with the 48 year old stocker for now.

I am starting to get some parts in the mail though and I also got a text today from Jim @ GMtilt.com {BirdsandBowties on here} and hes starting on my rebuilt tilt conversion steering column so that's cool. I'm looking forward to getting that.

Then this showed up in the mail a few hours ago!!.....Gen IV Vintage Air

I got a little work done today. Its really nice out and spring is here.

So to recap, i'm installing Speedhut gauges behind the stock dash, a Vintage Air Gen IV system, a tilt column from Jim @ GMtilt.com and i'm dynamatting the under dash area. Im going to get to cracking on the vintage Air install Monday....

Iv'e found that dynamatting the underdash area is a MF'er. It just takes a while. I bought Dynamat extreme off Amazon. I'm still waiting for my tape to get here to finish the seams but the dynamat itself goes on really easy and I can already tell by thumping on the firewall and dash that this stuff kills vibration and noise. There is no more hollow sound. Its a dead thud anywhere I tap....

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/03/20150321_165833_zpsib2lsi6l-1.jpg (http://s239.photobucket.com/user/novaguy73/media/GTO%20AC/20150321_165833_zpsib2lsi6l.jpg.html)

I sent my beat up 67' stock non tilt steering column off to BirdsandBowties here. His name is Jim. He owns GMtilt.com He specializes in converting stock columns to tilt. When he does them he installs new guts, wiring, switches etc, paints the column, converts it to tilt, leaves the collapseable internals, rebuilds everything and the finished product is top shelf. Its supposed to ship out Monday. These are a few of the shots he sent me the other day....

I also got a peek of what the dash will look like with my new gauges. Im really excited. I think this turned out great.

I'm waiting for PY and Ames to get an actual stainable wooden insert for the repop dashes since they are apparently off just a hair. According to PY a few weeks ago, right before the merger this will be this summer. Then I will be buying all that stuff and doing a new dash and insert and making it all purdy. Until then the good old beat up stocker will have to do.

The only thing left in the car, as far as the dash goes, is the steel structure that's welded in. I wont be pulling that but I would like to get the VA in first just for ease of install. In the VA instructions it doesn't say you have to pull the dash though, so i'm pretty sure it can be done without issue. The VA unit actually bolts up to a plate they give you that attaches to the firewall and blocks off where the heater core used to be.

great job on the build. Im at the point where I need to select wheels and tires and im stuck. I found the wheels I want but need help on the tire size to eliminate any rubbing issues. I am going with 18x8 4.5 b.s front and 18x9 5.25 b.s.rear. What is your recommendation on tire size. I was thinking 275/45 rear and 245/45 front. attached are pics of my project which is nowhere near as nice as yours. also I will be using black pmd center caps. any help is greatly appreciated

I'm going to throw a disclaimer out but I feel I should probably say this. I cant be 100% sure about your wheel backspacing. I'm only going to use my car and research as an example.

I'm about 100% sure that the 18x8/4.5" BS is going to be a problem in the front. A big problem. I'm running 5" of backspace and its perfect but its close. This backspace measurement is also dependent on what brake kit you run. This needs to be decided before you make your wheel purchase, it will change your needed backspace. Stock D52 kits are .25" wider per side, than the C6 Kore3 kit I used. That .25" is a mile in front wheel terms given the shape of our front fenders. I set my wheels up on the stock D52 discs and my tires hit the front fenders at the lower rear corner of the fender openings, on turns in the driveway. Please recheck this carefully. I know of one guy on here with a 67 that ran 45 series tires with a 4.5" backspacing and he has problems. If you are leaving the stock front D52 discs You will probably need a 5.25" BS. Again I am not advocating you buy these backspaces. This is merely based on my experience and most of the experiences of the guys I researched. Again please measure and remeasure.

As for the rears I should have gone 5.5" of backspace but I don't have a stock rear and iv'e heard of guys being kind of all over the place in this regard. I know a guy with a 66 that used 5-7/8" bs. I went with 5.75" of BS and ended up using a .25" billet spacer to center them perfectly. The stock GTO wheel well has a lip on the outside that kind of restricts how much you can shove in there. I went with 265/50/18's in the rear and its tight. Unfortunately I had to use a BFH to do a little bit of massaging in a couple spots to assure I wouldn't tear my tires up on a hard corner. I would say 275 max and you better be spot on with the backspacing or its going to rub. I also chose the 265/50/18's in Nitto555's because I wanted that extra tire height to fill the wheel wells. I was originally looking for 275/45/18's but the selection is extremely limited and the available tires are very expensive. Im happy with my choice so far but again I only have probably 50 miles on the new tires and 0 autox time.

Nice GTO! I hope this helps

GTOs and Chevelles have different wheel housings with Chevelle having a lot more room. No way is anyone getting a 295 in a 67 gto without cutting

On my 1965 Buick Skylark we modified the inner fender to go straight up from the frame. We also used a jack and moved the outer fender out some and also rolled the lip. I am running P285/40ZR17 with no problems. In fact I believe there is enough room that next time out I will run a 295 tire in the rear.

As to the backspacing I am running 1971 Buick 8.5" ten bolt that is 1" wider than the ten bolt that came on the 1965 model. I had to run a 6 3/8" backspacing.

thank you very much for the input. Luckily as long as I don't mount tires they will exchange rims. I may end up going 17x8 front. they offer 17x8 with 4.5 b.s. or 17x9 with 5.25 b.s.. in your opinion do you think that may alleviate the issue in front? I do understand you can only base this on your findings and im not holding you to it. you just have the most expierance from what I have found .

Honestly I think you're going to need to look for different wheels that will allow the correct backspace. Your brake choice is going to dictate your wheels necessary backspace and diameter. Have you chosen front brakes?

Seems like everyone is running a ton of tire on these...I'm guessing the goats are that heavy? Or is it more for ride quality/footprint.

Please excuse the pseudo-ignorance...ran an import shop for years, and most recently the trend was to stretch the smallest tire they could get on wheels. :-/

More tire gives more available traction.

If we are talking sidewall height here, I'm running the 265/50/18's and 245/45/18's on my GTO because its a big car. Physically they are similar in size and weight to Chevelles. Visually they are bigger than Chevelles IMO and they have larger, longer, rear wheel well openings. I wanted the wheel wells full with a tall tire in the rear and something to match the front. I also read on CFster's 67 GTO build thread that going from 40 to 45 series tires made a big difference in ride quality. Its a combo of aesthetics and ride quality for me. Since i'm not looking to set any world records I'll let the performance fall where it will.

GTOs and Chevelles have different wheel housings with Chevelle having a lot more room. No way is anyone getting a 295 in a 67 gto without cutting
Learn something new everyday. I never would have guessed the gto's have less room bummer.

Well Iv'e made some progress this week. I got some Dynamat tape in the mail from Amazon and I taped up all the Dynamat seams under my dash. Nothing too cool but progress is progress and im all done with the dynamat up under the dash.

I started my Vintage Air install. Ill be honest....this is kind of a PITA and i'm not 100% sold on the quality for the money paid. The plastic evaporator is a thin housing. Way thinner than anything GM ever stuck in a car. I guess it saves weight but at the same time, one really stiff kick and i'm afraid the unit might end up with a hole in it? I also think vintage air has a horrible looking firewall panel cover. For the money paid you would think they could engineer a fiberglass cover that didn't look like hell. I opted to leave my ACdelete.com parts in place, remove the blower motor and make a custom plate for the hoses to go though the blower motor hole under the fender, of course this adds to the PITA factor so maybe thats part of my gripe. I'm much happier with the look of the AC delete parts at this point. I will give them this. The instructions are top notch. That sounds petty but if you have ever done anything custom to any car, you'll know this is a huge deal. Especially for something like this. anyhow here is a shot of the evaporator mounted.....Ill do a big update on this eventually with my full opinion after its up and running....

So unfortunately my glovebox radio setup I installed last summer will not work with the vintage air. It works with the stock AC and non AC cars but the VA unit takes up too much space. Ill be selling this setup as a whole, radio and aluminum glovebox adapter. If you're interested PM me ill be putting it up for sale in the next few days.

I got my GMTILT.com tilt steering column installed today. I'm very happy with the product. Jim has been pretty good about everything and the column looks fantastic. The tilt functions perfect. This is a MUCH cheaper alternative to paying stupid ass money for a stock '67 tilt.

I got my Speedhut gauges installed and wired up today as well. I'm am extremely happy with the outcome here. I love everything about it. It's very different but it keeps the vintage '67 flavor at a glance. That's the theme. Feel 1967, perform 2015. I'm going to throw a huge shoutout to Speedhut too. The gauges are top quality, they are extremely easy to wire up, they are practically plug and play and the directions are fantastic. Again a huge deal. A+ to Speedhut.

Got some work done in the last few weeks. I finished up with the steering column, installed the new Retro Sound Model 2 radio to replace the glovebox unit I had before, wired up the dash and Speedhut gauges and took her for a spin.

The steering column works awesome. I highly recommend this conversion. I need all the room I can get and its a nice help to be able to put the wheel all the way up. It was plug and play. Done deal. Very reasonably priced too and it steers much better than the old sloppy stocker did.

GMTILT.com Jim is a good guy and he gets an A+ on his product

The RetroSound Model 2 is kind of pricey at $300 bucks but its a bargain compared to some of those stock radio conversions. You get a ton of options for tuning, USB docks, auxiliary inputs etc. It honestly sounds as good as my Kenwood that was in there, maybe better. I'm 100% satisfied with everything but the knob selection. I'm in the process of making the stock knobs work but its kind of a PITA

Speedhut is awesome. These gauges work perfect. I have to calibrate my fuel gauge and my shift lights yet but everything else is working flawlessly and they look awesome. The GPS speedo is on within seconds of startup and the whole thing really cleaned up my dash and took it from Joe Dirt to maybe..... Pro Dirt?

Ive been plugging away at the Vintage Air but Its kind of time consuming. Im going to get the rest of the car ready to roll and then im going to get back to that part of it. Im in the process of trying to custom run some lines, I dont care for the stock line install of this system. I really want a cleaner look.

I also ordered the Eddie Motorsports hood hinges in matte black. My Chineese ones are total **** and I dont want to mess with stock ones so I spurged. Those hinges are the definition of project scope creep but Im sure ill be happy I spent the money. Matts classic Bowties has by far the best price on them.

Here's a few pictures....forgive the sloppy wiring. I just got it done and I like to make sure everything works on a drive before I stuff it all up under there

Got my Eddie Motorsports billet hood hinges in today.

It took way too long but that's because I got sent some 2nd gen Firebird hinges in the mail first. Matt's Classic Bowties and Eddie Motorsports had new ones to me in a week and call tags emailed in a day. An unfortunate mistake but it happens and I respect good customer service.

The new hinges are light years ahead of the old Chinese **** re-pops I had on there. I had one break on me 2 years back, had another one laying around and it was about to break. I was done with re-pop stuff so it came down to rebuilding some 45 year old hinges or getting something I knew would work..... I paid good money for these but I doubt ill ever have to buy hinges again. The truth is though I would call these complete excess. They are in fact just hood hinges.....really nice hood hinges. With that said Im no longer afraid to open my hood and leave it open. It shuts and opens perfect, the rear of the hood doesn't stick up and they look pretty sweet. Now if my body panels lined up worth a damn I would actually have something!

Matt's Classic Bowties had the best price on them by far FWIW. I got them in matte black to blend in with everything else since I don't care for a lot of flash and I drive my car a lot so its hard to keep really clean.

Dont mind that mess up on the passenger fender. Those lines aren't done yet. I'm getting my Vintage air Gen IV finished up tomorrow by a local radiator shop. Ive got everything in a calibrated. The heater works great. I just need them to crimp the line ends on and charge the unit for me. Ill report back on that this weekend.

Anyhow here's some pics....

Spent yesterday cleaning up my ride height and washing the old girl. Both were long overdue and we had a big local show yesterday and I have a fun cruise today. This has been a battle. My car has a nasty A body pimp lean to the driver side. From all I gather its not too unusual really. I had the same frame shop that straightened my frame out originally, look it over last week. I thought I may have warped the frame a bit when I boxed it. The results were that it was straight as an arrow and way better than anything that ever left GM. So it was time to mess with some shims. Originally I had shoved a ton of shims in there just to get the car going with the other wheels and tires. This resulted in a high ride height in the front and a car that was all over the place side to side. Anyhow this is the kind of stuff that isn't really fun to do but the end results are good I think. The nose came down 1-1.5" and the rear came down just a hair as well. With the proper shimming right to left i'm within a 1/4" in the front and maybe a 1/2" in the rear. Its unnoticeable without a tape measure from all angles. I might mess with the rear a little later on to see if I can dial it in but for all intents and purposes that's good enough. I also have a bit of rake. I think the GTO's just look a little better with a touch of rake.....

Gil, 1989GTA and Tom,

Thanks guys! I appreciate the kind words!

I'm really happy with how it's turning out. It definitely got some attention at the cruise and show the last few days. Remember im in Iowa and the Pro Touring thing isn't really common around here. As an added plus I also got to meet forum member ROHRT {Ryan} at the cruise along with his wife and son and their 68 Firebird convertible. He ran me around the block in it. It was the first time I have been in a convertible I believe. Good stuff. It was a great last few days.

So I'm thinking about doing a chin spoiler from this guy....The reason being is that i'm going to get a finned aluminum power steering cooler and mount it on the bottom of my radiator support and I think this will cover it up nicely and add a little bit of subtle pro touring flair to the car.

Honest opinions. Do you think this will work with the car?

Changing the front ride height has zero effect on driveline angles, only the rear ride height effects driveline angles.

The last few weeks iv'e gotten a few more things done....

-I finished up my Vintage Air. Its great to have a functional AC/Heat/Blower system back in the car. It was a huge PITA to be honest but I'm glad I did it. The heat is hot and the ac is Ice Cold!

-If you notice the 4 SS screws in the fender in picture 2. That's where I mounted the electric coolant valve and then I doubled back on the coolant hose to the rear of the car as seen in picture 1.

-In pictures 3,4,5&6 you'll see I used VA's lines but cleaned up the suggested install. I tried to keep the install as clean as possible without flopping stuff everywhere. You will also notice an aluminum bracket I bought off Ebay to mount the dryer. It was about 13 bucks and looks a world better than the strap VA gives you. I also need to do a quick scuff and shoot on the dryer its mounting. It got scratched up pretty good with all the tinkering around.

-I also relocated a new radiator overflow can to under the passenger side fenderwell. Although the canister is sideways I don't see any sort of issue with this and it's out of the way of everything. Its also running downhill so it should be easily drained. Worst case is that I have to unbolt the canister and drain it. That would take all of 5 minutes where its at.
