      17" Tyre Sizes

      Can anyone help me out. I want to buy matching (same brand, but not same size) tyres for my car (17").

      Problem is finding the rear sizes that I want/need.

      I am trying to find 305's or 315's in 17" that will be as tall or taller than the fronts (255/40/17 or 255/45/17). Even 295's at the rear with the right specs would be OK.

      Just to complicate matters, here's the curve ball: my rear ratio is 3.23. Would it be better to run taller/shorter rear tyres and how would that affect the recommendations above?

      Thanks for the advice

      Rich

      Rich,

      You need to fine tune your ideas. A 295 tire is considerably narrower compared to a 315. What look do you want, can they fit, etc? Not sure if you understand the tire sizes:
      255 = tread width
      40 = aspect ratio = 40% of 255 = sidewall height
      17 = wheel diameter

      As far as rear axle ratio and tire size: a smaller diameter tire will give you faster acceleration but higher cruising rpm's; inversely a larger diameter tire will give you slower acceleration and lower cruising rpm's.

      Hope this helps,
      ED

      Here is on e of the best tool I have seen to halp calculate the tire sizes, wheel backspacing, etc.
      Plug in your numbers, and you will see a representation.

      Hey guys
      thanks for the ideas.

      All I am asking is: is there a brand of tyres (or two, or three.....the more the merrier) where I can get fronts in 255/40/17 or 255/45/17 AND rears in 295/305/315 (17") with a profile(aspect ratio) such that the rear tyres will be taller than the front ones? Do such combinations exist?.

      I see that the chart provided will help a lot, but if anyone has a quick answer it would be appreciated.

      Does anyone make a 315/40/17 tyre? I think that that would give me the rear height I need and then I can match the front.

      The rear wheel well is wide enough to take just over 12.5" section width of tyre and have enough clearance. I am also trying to get the rake/stance "right".

      Thanks again.

      I am not sure if you wanted a street tire, or a track tire, so I'll assume a street tire:

      Nitto 555 Extreme Performance has the 255, 285, 315,
      Here are some numbers plugged into the handy-dandy tire-comparer:

      Info on the tire sizes avail:

      255/45ZR-17 92W
      255/50ZR-17 101W

      You can also get the NT-01's for the track in the same sizes (255/40 & 315/35)

      Thanks MC84. The combination and brand that you have shown is the best fit that I have found so far.

      A 315/40/17 would probably be ideal for me........it's a theoretical size that I put into the calculator but can't seem to find an actual tyre that size. Still hoping in case anyone knows of same.

      try http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp this allows you to set tires together and will give you heights, widths, differences in speeds, and if you click right box give you many choices in tires, not all tires abut a lot of them

      Thanks for that link Monza. It certainly helps. By using it though, it seems to confirm that no one makes a 315/40/17 tyre.
