View Full Version : New Houston area Wheel Fad?!?
Had to drive down to Houston last night for a meeting this morning....got passed by a white '10 Camaro with huge (at least 24's) spoke wheels complete with fake knock-off spinner caps...crazy enough, but what was really crazy was that the knock-off spinner caps stuck out at least 6" beyond the wheel/tire face - it looked absolutely ridiculous...almost like a Pimp My Ride meets Mad Max kinda thing...I couldn't get pics because it was dark and we were traveling 80+ mph on I-45 in North Houston.
Anyway, I just thought it was some isolated nutcase....until today on the way home - saw 3 more cars with the same type of wheels on them....goodness gracious they are freakin' ugly! Has anyone else seen these? I did a google image search and couldn't find anything.

Ben Hur FTW indeed!
I know it's ridiculous to post something like this without pics, but it was just to0 crazy not to. Surely someone in the Houston area has seen this? NineBall? Anyone?
okay...took plenty of searching through google but found some pics (and an article that pretty much point to this fad being confined - so far - to the Houston area)

I can see every local dog lift its leg on those.
Those rims are modeled after a Cadillac wheel made by crager in the 80's . They were 30 spoke, and only offered in 1983 & 1984 as an option for FWD eldorados. They are pretty rare & sought after in the lowrider community. The 84's poke out the farthest and can go for five thousand a set. Guess some wheel company capitalized on their popularity and started making aftermarket plus size versions.

It's not new. I worked in a speed shop in Houston nearly ten years ago and it was being done then too (we sold wheels also). We sold 2 & 3 bar spinners and threaded extensions to make them stick out farther. Couldn't keep that crap in stock.

Not really a "fad" here. I rarely see a ****box like those here, and I drive 100 miles per day in the city. One fad with wheels I do sadly notice is the big 3-spoke chrome wheels coming back in style. Yuck.
