I thought the "SS" got shot down & they weren't being made......? I saw one today on display at our local shopping mall. 6.2L, 6 speed automatic, ground effects..... $38K.

Scot,

I believe you're thinking of the Z/28, which was supposed to be the top-of-the-line high performance model. That was cancelled.

Was there talk of the SS being cancelled at one point, too? I haven't really been following the 5th gen saga that closely.

I think the Z28 was torpedoed

The Z28 was put on hold, but they have SS and 2SS versions flying off the assembly line. As well as the lesser six cylinder siblings...

I had heard the SS wasn't being built either, but I am seeing them around. I am not sure what source I heard that from.

I am glad to finally see the camaros roaming the streets now.

Ah I think you guys nailed it, it was the Z28.

This one that I saw looked pretty good with the ground effects & front chin spoiler.

I think I drooled on it a little bit. I don't want it though, it has the auto 6 tranny.

the Z/28 is all ready to go- it has been totally engineered and it has passed all crash, emissions, and whatever other tests are required. it just got put on hold due to GM's financial problems. they didn't want to deal with the negative PR of putting out a car like that while the company was on the verge of imploding. but i think it will make it out in the next year or two.

Not entirely true about the z28. It was suspended because it
would share the same motor as the zr1 a 105,000 car and the
caddy the cts-v I think. The real problem was they would be
cannibilizing there own product line. Why would some one buy
a 70,000 camaro ? When the vette is cheaper. Or more importanly
who would then buy a 105,000 zr1 when they could buy a camaro
the caddy and the corvette don't target the same market like the
camaro and vette do. I doubt we will see a z28 with any thing
close to what it was rumored to have. More likely they will see
how the convertible does next year then just like in the 60's the
z28 will be a option but not with the supercharged motor
I would love to see it but I doubt it. I just picked up my 2010
camaro last week and was talking to the dealer and he was told
from his factory rep that the only new news on the camaro was
the convertible.

The Z28 has been put on hold. It was completely through developement but with the adminstration in power pulling the purse strings on GM we will not see it the way it was designed. The Z28 prototype was LSA powered same as the Cadillac CTS-V, the Z28 will never get the LS9 from the ZR1 due to the cost and one simple reason......GM never puts the top Corvette power plant in any other cars. IMHO if GM does a Z28 in the future it will be in more line with the original car, a retuned LS3 with a 30 HP bump, and the suspension will get the biggest attention.

A few key points are incorrect, namely you're outrageous pricing. CTS-V and ZR1 do not share the same engine-- to an extent. Yes, the LSA is a watered down LS9, but my point still remains.. Also, a Z-28 Camaro would be more along the lines of 45K, no where near 70K. Heck, the CTS-V isn't even close to 70K, it starts below $60K, actually. The Z-28 would (will) share the LSA with the CTS-V instead of the LS9 the ZR1 utilizes.

Likely they'll hold off on the Z-28 option until late in the production run in order to boost sales (a' la: ZR1).

i still think that they should also make a V8 Camaro that comes in between the V6 and current V8 cars. make the V8 engines an option on the base Camaro, and skip all the gaudy doo dads like 20" wheels, leather seats, and "halo" headlights that only add weight, complexity, and cost and just make a basic V8 powered car that stickers for around $25k.

They halted all production of the V8s for some unannounced reason I was told when I picked mine up. The ones already produced are available....

Only the v8's with the six spd were halted due to the output shaft
failure. They believe that it was isolated to a batch from
tremec that did not have proper hardening and when using launch
control or under severe abuse they were failing and leaving the
car inoperable . This was only one v8 tr6060 equiped cars

There is a lot of info flying around on these but we have eight V8 SS Camaros in the shop right now yes eight of them, with 3 more on the way, we also have a V6 in house.

We deal one on one with GM weekly and this is where things sit for the most part. GM is making 80% V6 cars and 20% V8 cars, GM did not put the Z28 on hold our Government did. They own 60% of GM right now and until that changes they may mess the company. They can’t run themselves let alone an auto company. But you can order a V8 car today we just did it.

The Cadi gets a supercharged LSA engine and that engine is the same base as the LSA Camaro engine with a new top and supercharger and same base as the LS3. All three engines are different in some way just same base.

The LS9 will come in nothing but a ZR-1 and what people like us are doing. We have five ZR-1 conversions going on right now with the 2010 and 1969 Camaro’s so they will be a popular install.

The Z28 was going to have the LS3 engine with an upgraded tune and cam along with a sport suspension other than that the cars were going to be pretty much the same. The LS3 engine has more power than the LSA but not by much it does sound better but when you drive the two they are close. We have both cars in house and will post up some shots of them soon.

The body kit we just finished is very cool and makes this car look more like a 69. Pics of that will be coming around SEMA time.

That has been fixed as I have two of them here and they seem to be fine.

That sounds like something the dealers are saying to gouge the price. There are quite a few lieing dealers saying things like the Camaro is gong to be a limited run, or that the SS Camaro has been stopped. I had a dealer tell a friend of mine that the only way to get a manual trans was to order the 2SS, that is a flat out lie.

The ground effects package is an add-on. They don't come with it, unless you order it or the dealer has one on the lot that they ordered with it.
