      275/40-17's on a '69 Camaro

Has anyone been able to put 275/40-17's on the rear of a '69 Camaro without scraping? I have the wheels 17 X 9.5's with a 1/4" inboard offset. I hear they hit on the inside with this configuration, and I was wondering if a 1/4" spacer would solve the problem? I Autocross and do some Track Days, and would like to avoid wrecking tires. Thanks.

ok, I know that my car is a 68 but the inner wheel house and inner tub are the same.

      I am running a 275/35/17 BFG on a Timeless 5 Boyd wheel.

The back spacing is 5.625. I only rub if coming out of a parking lot at a steep angle.

      Interesting new topic.

      Oh wait. No it isn't.

      Search hint: 275x40x17 AND rear

This isn't hard people. Using existing threads on a given topic makes the knowledge base deeper and easier to use. Each new thread fragments the base and the variety in thread titles makes searches less and less effective.

      Thanks True,

I did a multitude of searches. I found that this combination with 5.5 back spacing is said to work by some, and to scrape on the inner wheel houses going up curbs or other uncommon maneuvers in normal driving by others. I've asked some at an AAS Autocross meet and they have confirmed the scraping. One guy said he greases the inner tire too avoid problems during a run! I was hoping for a “magic” get out of jail free combination for extreme use with a stock ’69. I guess I will need to try spacers and or hammer work on the inner wheel houses if I want to track this combination.

      Curtis,

Only time I had this issue was when I ran a 285/40-17 on a 17x9.5 wheel w/5.5" b/s and then only when the chassis was tweaked going up a steep driveway or culvert.
A 275/40 shouldn't be an issue on that set up and if so,a BFH or a thin 1/4 spacer with nice longer lugs and you should be golden.

Good luck to you,are you gonna be @ Laguna on the 12th & 13th of this month for no sound limit open track sessions?

Also, be mindful of the wonderful "offset" of the factory rear end. It sits a klittle to the pass side. Get wheels that fit perfectly for the pass side and space the drivers side with the 1/4" spacer.

Bingo. In the case of my car, the diff is offset .310" to the passenger side. A 275-40-17 on a 17x9.5" 5.5 BS rubs the outer lip on the passenger side and the inner well on the driver's side. Make sure you measure to see exactly what your car will need.

      John,

That's good to know, as I am concerned about what will happen in the Esses and Club Corner at Buttonwillow, as I use a lot of curb in those spots. The funny thing is I see offset to the opposite side on my car. The passenger side is closer to the inner wheel house.

Will you make it to Buttonwillow and watch us tear it up? Quite a group is starting to assemble. I'm getting pressure from some to make the jump to R-Compound tires. My current tires are on the wear bars with chunks missing. If I do I'll be adjusting quite a bit to try to get it to work with the extra grip on the track. I may chicken out and run NT-05's, so road and track can be run on the same tires rather than have to switch when I get home.

I don't have plans for that Laguna event -I have the UFO Auto-X on the 13th- but I will be there 4 December if you or others want to stop by. I don't have trouble with sound there as I tested at 88dB the last time out that is well below the 91 dB limit. It's the beauty of tracking a daily driver.

      Regards
