"I recommend going the simple stupid route. get a fast ratio gearbox from a second or third gen f-body. Quick ratio steering arm from Rick's First Generation or similar supplier, (they have the correct arm). This is a direct bolt on proven system for improving your steering. " - Tom Welch

Is this really a direct bolt in for a first gen? Has anybody done it?
I just happen to have a complete power steering set up from an 86 model IROC laying in the corner of the shop from an older project.

From what I've read here and at other places it's most definitely true. I believe you just have to plan/prepare for proper hose connections. I expect our original is standard and maybe the 3rd gen is metric?? Either way, I'm pretty sure leepowersteering.com has any extra parts needed. He's referenced frequently here.

BA Barackus (A-Team reference) is correct. The differnece in fittings is the 3rd gen box uses an O-ring, and the 1st gen uses a flare type.

The input shaft spline is smaller so you need a later model coupler. I have the part number for it on my web page:

Be careful when ordering headers for it though. The cheapies seem to be awefully tight-unless you like to pre-heat your ps fluid. :scared: If there is a footnote for it-make sure to include that it is a ps car when requesting headers. -Jabin

I have done the swap with a 2nd gen fast ratio box and it fit with no unusual problems or hitches at all. If you need a steering box look at A1Cardone reman boxes, they sell the fast ratio box for first thru third gen f-bodies. I know that Lee makes excellent parts but I believe that A1Cardone makes a less expensive version. Napa also has the boxes.

I just happen to have a power steering box off my old 86 IROC Z. Back in the day I swapped to a manual to loose weight.
I wonder how well the power steering box will work with all my manual linkages...
