Anyone know what may cause an air compressor to fill up slowly? I found a good deal on one and it has this problem and was wondering if it may be a good idea to buy it and have it repaired or if its even repairable.

Assuming that it's not a simple leak on the pressure side at any fittings, hose, pressure switch or regulator (any external pressure leak). I would guess that it's probably the reed valves which control airflow into and out of the head.

I have a compressor that fills up slowly, but that's just the way it is, because it's a 2 HP (running, 5HP "max") motor with a 5.7 CFM (@ 90 psi, 7.1 CFM @ 40 psi) 2 cylinder pump filling up a 40 gallon tank. That's gonna take a while even in top form.

Any and all details would be extremely helpful:

How many pump cylinders?
Rated CFM (@ 40psi or @ 90 psi?)
Tank size?
HP of electric motor (and whether that is running or "max" HP, if unknown which it is, is it 115 volt or 230 volt?)
Different people have different ideas of what slow is, maybe it's just a smallish pump/motor on a large tank. Or maybe it's operating just fine and this person thinks it slow.
How long does it take to charge from empty(and what is the max psi)?
Is it belt drive from the motor to pump?
Is the pump oil lubricated or oil-less (teflon sleeved cylinder)?

I have an older Dayton that had that problem and it was the reed valve. The small screw that holds the valve tight was loose because the head material is a funky aluminum casting that doesn't have much strength to hold threads. I was able to retap it and get it tight enough to work again.

I had to rebuild a cylinder in my Craftsman oiless compressor when it started to fill slowly-actually it wouldn't fill at all, just ran continuously. That was great for the electric bill.
