the widest tire you can fit on a stock car are 315 out back and a 275 up front. To fit a wider tire you have to narrow the frame rails or stretch the quarters.

Gordz32...Do you know what wheel width and BS it take got get the the 315 to fit. I currently have 285's on a 9.5 rim w/5.5" BS for my 68 chevelle. Wanting to go 315. Thinking I need 10.5 wheel with
6 1/4" BS to make it work. What have you found?

In anything taller than a 17" wheel, I wouldn't go anything wider than a 305 wide tire on a 10, before you get into modifying the wheel housings. The reason why guys get the 17x11 to work with a 315 is because its short. When you get into the 19-20s your tire gets taller, and more square, and its just not a good fit.

On my '69, I got away with a 6.25" backspace on a 17x11" wheel to make a 315/35 fit. Be aware though, if your axle is not located absolutely center with these tight tolerances, your tires will rub because the upper rear wheel wells do narrow in a bit above the fender lip on the inner sides.

What's a little more cutting and welding to get the wheels you want.

A BFH will handle that wheel well narrowing problem too...
