View Full Version : Mechanical parking brake
I am looking for a parking brake solution using a separate mechanical brake caliper similar to that used on the Jaguar, Audi, Viper....etc. I have been searching the WEB and it is amazing how scarce this info is. Have not been able to find anything significant. Would anyone out there have some information regarding purchase, options ... etc??????

Wilwood made one in the past (so look for some used ones??), they changed to the explorer style with the internal drum brake (i think that style is bulky)
Wilwwod does have a new aluminum single piston caliper with a mechanical parking brake all in one. The only downside is its a single floater design.

This is the setup that I have and will use in my 69 javelin with a 9 inch rear. Don't know if this will work for you, but it will solve my lack of a parking brake with my wilwood gt disc brakes in back.
Thanks,
Jon
I have looked into all the above options. The combination parking caliper from Wilwood requires hydraulic fluid to function properly and only fits up to 1" thick rotors. Will not go over 1.25" rotors.
The pinion mounted setup uses the Airheart cam caliper which is extremly finicky to setup correctly, if it is at all possible. I had purchased one of these calipers and opted not to use it. Besides the rotor on the pinion will interfere with the panhard rod in my case.
I need to find a distributor that seels the units used on the viper or some of the other exotic cars. Some of them are electric rather tham cable operated which makes them a snap to install. Must cost a fortune though.

When I read "mechanical parking" brake I think "wheel chock".
I haven't looked at the electrical systems out there yet. I've got to try to remember to look next time one is in the shop.
I wonder if you can find them in the junkyard for an acceptable price.

The Viper, Bentley, etc mechanical spot caliper is a standard Brembo unit and quite pricey IIRC. StopTech/Centric make a similar caliper, ST-10 (http://www.stoptech.com/products/BBK/caliper_descriptions.shtml), that is probably more similar to the Brembo piece than anything else. Another option is the unit made by Revolution Brake, the Mr. Parker (http://www.revolutionbrake.com/index.html), which is supposedly good for rotors up to 1-1/4" thick. Revolution is a Wilwood distributor, so it's interesting to me that they didn't use something from Wilwood...apparently they don't have anything exactly like what's being discussed.

thanks for the info guys. Mr.Parker looks interesting but I need to learn more how the mechanism works. The Brembo design utilizes a worm gear to drive the piston which gives great mechanical advantage. Again thanks.

I think all the mechanical spot calipers are screw drives (when the park lever is pulled it "unscrews" the piston). There is a ratcheting mechanism to make up for pad wear.
