      TH350 - broken case

When I lost the driveshaft in the El Camino, the housing for the TH350 broke at the bellhousing.

I still have the tranny, it was a relatively fresh rebuild with < 10k miles on it, but obviously I can't use it in a car with the case broken.

How hard is it to move the guts over to a replacement case? Is it something a reasonably dextrous idiot could do or something better left to our betters? I'm running on an (extremely) limited budget so cheap trumps "right".

If moving the guts over is beyond my skill level, how much should I be willing to pay for a used (not rebuilt) TH350?

It's not that hard. Get a book on the 350 and go for it. Your going to need new valve body gaskets, pan gasket, torque converter seal, and inspect all the seals very closely. If it's that fresh you can probably reuse all the internal seals. I assumeit was performing well. Get a tub of vaseline and go for it.

Thanks, Todd. How much should I expect to pay for a case?

I haven't rebuilt a 350 turbo for over a decade so I really wouldn't know. I bet you could pick one up that works out of an engine swap around here really cheap. I'm pretty sure I sold my working 350 out of my car for 200-300 in 2006.

Also if just the bellhousing part of it is broke you can get an Ultrabell. They are made to replace just that part of the case. Just trim off the old part per their instructions and it installs onto the front pump bolts. Any mail order speed shop will have one in stock.

i'm curious-are you running a solid trans mount perhaps? The trans needs to have some give (ie flex)...stay with a rubber mount.
