I have had a 70 Road Runner for a few years now. It is in really rough shape. It basically needs to be replaced from the doors back. I found that rear frame rails are now being made and wanted to get them to start the build.

What my end product will roughly be is:
Original looking body with minitubs, subframe connectors
Viper drivetrain pullout
Modified slightly interior for modern upgrades
I wanted and aftermarket suspension. I am not sure what to do here.......... 4 link, air bags, k frame???????

I am wanting to build a good all around car, the best of all worlds and still be comfortable and different. Any suggestions? If you were to build my car with your knowledge which direction would you go in?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Roman

I don't know of any of the aftermarket K-frame builders who accomodate a Viper engine, however, (correct me if I'm wrong) the XV's are aluminum? and the Alterk-tion and Magnum Force are steel so they are easier to weld on and fab something up.
I have seen the alter-k-tion altered heavily and it seems like a great platform to jump off of and you can have coil overs or air bags. Mine is bolted up in it's original config. and it handles like it is on rails. Seriously.

For the rear I would go with a three link. You are going to be cutting up your tunnel anyway for the 6 speed so you might as well slice on the rear of the tunnel for the third link. Other than that you've got RMS or Air Ride Technologies for nice bolt in 4 links with the air spring option. Or build your own.

If budget is not much of a concern full xv treatment. Maybe go with a supercharged new 6.1 hemi.

Luckly you have a lot of aftermarket campanys you can choose from these days. Since droping a viper drivetrain in these B bodys seems to happening more often now, you are not forced to fab from scratch.
All sudj are good but, you might want to look other places besides these. XV has some really nice systems but, prices!! on the front you should also look at what Mat Delany has to offer these days. His shop has come up with a suspension system that looks, like it will it is very functional. Front and rear systems. and if you want to go really nuts, he has a bolt in IRS for the rear. You might want to look at Mancinni racing. They have tubular K frames in a few different configurations.
I am building a 68 charger, so I am contemplating some of this also.

+1 on the schwartz! Since you are starting from scratch make the foundation as solid as possible.

DaviRotten has the most important questions - budget! Figure that out first, then build as fit. I agree with checking out Delany, I know he built a V10 Chrager not that long ago. See what went on there. Probably can do it with near stock stuff, or go wild and get all the custom after market stuff you want, but budget is the main question first.

I agree, budget is the most important question. I not sure. I guess that if it's worth it, I'll get it. I have built a few cars. I always put a budget in place and it seems to get blown out of the water. I'd rather take a bit longer and build an awesome car. But I guess that in the end it's up to me. I was mainly looking for options. Cheap ideas and all out crazy ones. I am new to the pro touring and I figured that I'd be at a disadvantage trying to do it with a B-body Mopar.

I originally wanted to sell the car and get a 69 Camaro. I love that car, the 69 is my favorite. I since changed my mind back to the RR. It is a unique car. Not too unique, but enough that I won't see any others on the road (at least not for a while).

Thanks for all the tips, guys. I have checked it out and saved in my favorites. Now to make a few phone calls and see what this stuff costs.

Thanks,

Roman

The schwartz chassis is a great choice. You can purchase components in stages too.

I heard a little birdie tell me that the Viper engine will fit too!!!

I sure wish Schwartz was doing E-body stuff hen I was spending a bunch of money on suspension parts.

buy the RMS alterKtion-suspension in front and the street-linx 4-link suspension rear....is the cheapest version and in same time a really nice setup. i drive the alterktion on front on my 71 road runner with airride...i find is awesome!! you can choice for both suspensions if you want an airride or coil over setup...

what's the latest ?

Hmm, the latest.

Well this will be a slow process for me for the next 2 years. The car is in Ontario and I am presently working in Florida. That makes it tough for some weekend thrashing. But I think that my plan is:

1) Get the car media blasted, while I'm away.
2) Buy the body panels this summer. Have all panels present and accounted for. 2 rear quaters, full trunk floor, inner and outer wheelwells and trunk extensions.
3) I looked around and I think that for the underneath I will probably be picking up the Schwartz frame and stocking that with some good stuff.
4) Drivetrain will be a viper pullout and maybe a little blower on the front of that.
5) as for the interior, I'll be checking around on that. I like the Katzkin seats. After that I'm at a loss. Any good interior guys/ideas I should look at? I just want a nice clean modern look, nothing outrageous. I prefer performance with a bit of comfort.

Thanks,

Roman

p.s. Thanks guys for the ideas, I am very excited about my new/next project.

Not really sure. I was thinking Autometer analog, but I'll be researching that a bit before I jump into that part of the car.

I see that you're a fellow RR guy. Any pics?

LOL

BTW, I had a custom set of Katzkin leather seats made up for my (former) Dodge Ram and will say it is a top shelf product.

Looking forward to your build with interest -please keep me posted !

Back in the early 70's my buddy had a Purple 4 spd with the air grabber hood . We had a blast in that car. Nice project. Good Luck

I guess that this is a suspension question now?

what did you have in mind ?

want it slightly lower with something like dropped spindles ?

or thinking more along the line of air bags ?

or ???

Well as it looks right now, the schwartz frame with a drop and then a handling, braking monster. When I am ready to get the frame, I will be asking/doing a lot of research on that one too.

power discs on all four corners ?

whats your brake plans ?

Yup, discs on all 4. I'll figure out the brakes after I get a tire/wheel size determined. I think that 18's look like the biggest option for tires, if I'm not mistakened?
