This is on my 86 Silverado... when I hit small bumps in the road I get a nasty rattle up front. When I apply my brakes and hit those bump there's no sound. A quick visual inspection shows everything in tact underneath. Any ideas?

The problem is most likely slop where the front brake caliper slides into its bracket. When I had my 92 Silverado it did the SAME thing and drove me crazy. I fixed it by laying a very thin bead of weld down the caliper where it slides into the bracket, and filing it flat. No more noise!

Thanks Randy.. so you think it has nothing to do with the pads at all?

And isn't the caliper bolted down? I thought those bolts might be loose and tightening them would cure it.. but I guess that's not the case.

I don't think its the pads. The calipers are "floating" style. Meaning they have bolts that hold them down, but have special bolts and are allowed to move around. Try taking a wheel off and you will see what I mean.

My 87 did that also. Very annoying. I replaced the caliper bolts and thought that was it. Still rattled. Then I applied some of that orange brake pad goop to hold the pad in place. Still had the rattle. Finally realized the caliper had some sort of a bushing/seal deal so I replaced them and it was finally quiet.
