Popular Hot Rodding has gone back to staples with the May '09 issue.

I think he is referring to the fact that the magazine is stapled together in the seam rather than being glued.
My question is: So, what difference does it make?

I hardly think that signifies that the end is near. Perfect binding is more expensive. I'm sure that like every other form of print media that their add revenues are down. Going back to staples is probably just a cost cutting measure.

It has been my observation they use staples until they reach a certain page count, then they step up to the glued binding.
If PHR has reverted to staples then I'm willing to bet it is also smaller.

It's technically called "Perfect Bound" and "Saddle Stitched"
It's hard to Perfect Bind a magazine that's 100 or less pages. Personally I prefer the stapled version since it opens nicer and lets us do the pull out poster deal.

So do I. For what it's worth Super Chevy is stapled this month also. Oh PHR is 98 pages and SC is a 122.

I'm a life long newspaper guy. Started in the back shop, did 20 years as a photographer and have worked for a small town paper and the Associated Press. Let me tell you, the print media is struggling. Everyone thinks that they can get all the information worth having off the internet these days. They don't stop to think that anybody can write anything they want on the internet. The sad part is that most will take it as gospel. Folks, the internet has NO REGULATIONS and NO STANDARDS. They can lie to you all day long and laugh about it. At least newspapers and magazines have journalists who care if they're telling the truth.
And before anyone says anything, yes, I know we're our own worst enemy. Still, for the most part, journalists and newspapers are sincere about printing the truth. Go buy one and read it. You might learn something.

Oh wow, good observation. Luckily though, both my April and May issues of PHR have the same 98 pages. I collect my magazines, so I really prefer the "perfect bound." When looking for a particular old issue, it's much easier to find.
Because the stapled issues fold closer to flat, those annoying subscription offers (which are actually really good deals except that every issue seems to have 20 of them) stuffed in the magazine jump out more easily.

You can say all you want about the printed PRESS Articles being more acurate. But, I will also say that the printed press and television media is a Joke. Of course, I am talking about the Current events, not the hobby magazines..
The internet, even though full of CRAP, you can still navigate some hidden truth from it. The news media today are going out of their way to say what they want, rather than what is necessary...

Please stay on topic.. this isn't about the "news" media and we don't want to go there since it will get political and a big-ass padlock.. :)

Oh, another thing I prefer about the "perfect bound" issues is that they're less likely to fall apart when carried around in say, a backpack full of notebooks and folders. So long as they keep up the good content, I'm not too concerned.

Everyone has an opinion. ;)
These are tough times for the magazines, I'm sure. Do your part if you like a particular magazine and keep your subscription going. With good circulation numbers the advertising will follow.

A good friend of mine has his car featured in the current PHR issue. He bought a ton of stuff for his car from a previous build of my car, and put it all to very good use. Its the 69 Buick Skylark convert.
The guy that did the majority of the work on that car is also doing the majority of the work on mine.

I would be pissed if I was him. That article was so poorly written I could barely read it. Full of run-on sentences, and extra descriptors. Terrible.
Nice car though!

Plus it is a whale of a lot easier to cut out articles for posterity when a magazine is stapled rather than glued! Also, a stapled mag is MUCH easier to copy from my printer/scanner unto my beloved Mac.....

I am fine with staples and would rather have it with them than not at all.
The only downside is that I do keep these mags for years and the ones with staples do wear out and start loosing pages faster.
It the magazines own fault though, I would subscribe at close to the cover price, but I don't because I know they will send me an offer for 1 year for $9.99 if I wait, and sometimes I can get 2 years at that price! How stupid are they? They can't afford to mail it to me at that price. Can anyone honestly say that they would stop buying the mags at $3 per issue? Of course not, but instead, we pay $10 per year instead of the $36+ they could make.
