Spindle threads on my '68 got a ding in them from sitting around w/o a nut and I want to clean it up. Can't seem to find a 3/4"-20 die anywhere. Anyone know where I can find one? If not I could always use a thread file.

Thread file is going to be your best bet since 3/4-16 is going to be the standard fine die thread for that nominal size. Another option would be to chuck it up in a lathe and chase the threads that way, that is after all how it was probably made to begin with. It's not like a standard fastener where the threads are preloaded to a percentage of yield, so they don't have to be perfect to function as intended.

Yes, 3/4-20 is a "standard" UNEF thread designation. The dies exist, they're just not common place. You can't walk into Sears and buy one, however if you really want one and don't mind dropping the cash to make it happen, then you can certainly find one. After a quick Google search, here's a British company selling them for about $50 each: http://www.engineering-supplies.com/subcat.asp?id=283

Here's another at almost double the price: http://www.threadtools.com/Products/34x20-UNEF-Die__D2328pnt.aspx

Wow- a bunch spendier than what I would have anticipated.....

Maybe a Plan B-
Can you find a replacement nut? If so, can you dremel out notches in the thread, then heat it red hot and quench it? Trying to make a cheap single pass die from the nut.

Initial thought was take it to an A & P aircraft shop- those guys love weird threads, they may have a die and run it down the spindle....

If it's just a thread ding, use a thread file on it.
