View Full Version : I love when the UPS guy shows up...

My new STACK dash arrived from England today.. can't wait for the rest to get here since I've never had a analog tach that worked right. The digital one in my shift light did, but the other one was wacked.

I need to rebuild my center dash to accomodate the smaller gauges, but it needs to be a bit more sturdy anyways. It will be odd seeing my fuel level in gallons rather the the traditional "E-F" way although I could add a fuel gauge if it really bothered me.

Here's the site.. pretty cool stuff and I like how it has an analog tach rather than a digital one.

I picked up the street version since I don't need data-logging (my racepack does that). I also have a set of the center gauges on the way along with a sequential shift light option.

It's nice since they are part of autometer now. Beats calling Europe for tech questions.

I like that the tach is a traditional dial. Nice part... I love the ups guy I hate the Visa guy

With any luck the UPS guy and I should be on a first name basis this Summer.

I've been looking at that setup as well. Really nice package.

One thing I've yet to determine though is if the unit can get input directly from the EMC of if you have to use independent sensors? Can it plug directly into the OBD port?

I asked the same thing and my understanding was that it needed data from it's own sensors. After thinking about it I like this better since STACK uses better stuff than the factory. I was digging through the box last night and the components are very high-end.

Maybe Kris Carlson from Autometer can chime in on this topic.

I'd prefer, for the sake of simplicity since I HATE HATE HATE electrical to have it plug directly into the GM computer.

From what I can tell wiring on this deal is pretty simple. All the ends use mil-spec stuff and are pre terminated. Mount the sensor and plug it in.

The sensors are also fairly small and compact. Not like the huge ones (especially the pressure senders) I'm used to dealing with.

I sent a not to Kris at Autometer so he could chime in on the technical aspects.

Hey Steve,
I assume that the unit will fit into a Covan's dash piece. Or are you doing something different? That is a nice looking piece, I agree, I like the simplicity of it.

Yes it will. Don DeRaad has one in his Ford turbo Camaro.

I like the new setup. Curious to see how it looks with the Covan dash and also at night all lit up!

Yea, it's pretty small and will easily fit in a blank Covan's dash panel I have. I just need to figure out where to mount the sequential shift light.

I like the warning light feature when sensors get out of parameter. The other gauges do that as well.

Very cool.. now I don't need to figure out where to put those switches.. lol

And Ron is close enough to help with the wiring if I get stuck.. it seems both easy and complicated at the same time.

There are four black switches used to control the dash.. you can see two of them in that picture right below the STACK unit.

:hmm: Is the gas gauge calibrated in U.S. gallons or Imperial gallons? :naughty:

You can have either.. this one is all US stuff...

The also have a traditional gas gauge but the one in this shows how many gallons are remaining. Sorta cool.

Here's the answer I recieved from Kris over at Autometer:

The street dash unit is not currently designed to plug into an ECU for information as you mentioned, although Stack Data Loggers such as the MFD and MFR products are able to interface with select motorsports ECUs with an optional CAN link adapter piece. The GM LS motor is unfortunately not one of those yet, but I'm working to get us in that direction. I've chatted with the guys at Mast Motorsports however and they do feed information on a J1939 protocol which we would be compatible with.

So it sounds like they are working on the OBDII deal.

Well, MAST is on my list of potential engine suppliers so that may work out to be an addition "pro" in their column.

Guess you got tired of the SW gauges. I used the SW Max Perf. gauges after seeing them in Bad Penny. As per our converstion awhile back, I was never able to get the tach to work properly so I'm running an Autometer unit in with the SW stuff. The speedo works well except for the bouncing when you are not moving. The Stack unit looks real trick. Let us know how it works out.

Our M-90 controller can log engine data over the CAN bus on a Stack system. I am pretty certain that a GM controller won't do it though.

Steve, can you confirm my hunch that the Stack 52mm gauges are cosmetically re-branded autometers? Stack did not offer them prior to the A-M buyout and the needle centers and design look exactly like the new "II" series of gauges from A-M (i.e. Sport Comp II, Ultra Lite II, etc.)

I have some stuff from Stack too-- while I liked the 8130 "Street" dash, I didn't liked how it looked in my application and took a different route since I wanted to keep a stock profile and look to the factory dash carrier. Besides, I never get tired of answering people who ask "don't you have a speedometer?"

lol.. your problems are EXACTLY the same as mine. I guess it's not just me then.. :)

The speedo bounces because at a stop it picks up the tach signal. Once you start moving the VSS signal overpowers the tack bleed through. The way to fix it is to shield the VSS wire or run it as far as possible from the tach signal wire.

The Tach is just a screwed up mess. I pretty much ignore it and just look at the SW digital tach with shift light. Thier LED lighting is great, I don't know what their analog tach problem is..

Might be but I'm getting the other STACK units (the Pro-Control stepper motor gauges) not the other ones you mentioned. I will ask Autometer and see what they say. Since they are "one happy family" now I wouldn't be surprised since it would be a good move to get a lower cost line into the STACK catalog.

Here's what's on the way:
http://www.stackltd.com/instruments_pro_control.html

They have some pretty cool functions like how the temp gauge can also control fans and how they can change color to warn of problems.

Yea, I'm sure I will get the "no speedo?" question a lot.. lol

Actually I will have two speedos and two tacks since the Racepak gives that info as well.

Cool. Nothing wrong with technology sharing at all between the companies.

I just wish the Stack-branded 52mm gauges were available when I first purchased all my gauges... because I probably would have purchased them instead of the VDOs just to have everything match. LOL!

No way.. not even by Del Mar. I need to design a new center gauge "pod" to hold the new smaller stuff. I wish they were 2 5/8-inchs and not the smaller size.

I won't even have the new fancy C5 stuff on the car by Costa Mesa. I will have the rear bar, new tires and such done. Too much to do, too little time.
