widening or replace a narrowed ford 9"??

How should I go about this? I want to put 22x9.5" wheels on my truck and get rid of the 15x14 centerline convo pros. I can't afford to put a 20x14 or 22x14 wheel on the back at these sizes they get really expensive. So my next option is to widen the rear axle to stock or near stock specs right? Should I sell my narrowed axle and start over with something new or widen the housing and buy new axles?

This is a really really long shot, but how wide is your current rear housing, flange to flange. I only ask due to the possibilities of a trade. But like I said, it's a long shot.

To your question though. All you really need is a wider 9" housing. You may be able to find one in a length that will work for you without having to break the bank. Either way you're looking at having to buy new axles whether you lengthen or find a new housing.

The axle housing measures 48", that's all I've been able to measure with the wheels on. The Strange axles have a 5x4.75" bolt pattern.

Oh well, it was a long shot. Thought since yours was a truck it might be wide enough for my little Camaro. I have a 9" in mine that is about 56" and I wish it were a couple inches narrower.

I know these aren't exactly cheap, and may not be the exact style you want, but they may be a cheaper option. http://www.coyswheel.com/coys-c5-20x14.html

Thanks for the Coys link. I saw this wheel at the Barrett-Jackson Auction last month, they had a booth there but I didn't get a chance to talk with the rep. They look huge in person, just like I like it.

At the risk of sounding ignorant, oh I am ignorant, just dont like to sound like it.

What is the problem with using a solid aluminum (5"x3.5") spacer. If its turned within a thou and drilled tapped for the flange bolts then clocked over to have through holes drilled and tapped for wheel studs.

I have made many back plates for lathe chucks and its simple lathe work. And accuracy can be under a thou run out.

And as far as too much overhang for the axle bearings I dont see it any more than if you had the 14" wheels with 3.5"s more of back spacing, heck, a corvette wheel prolly has that much back space. Dunno. I only ask cause I have a lathe and that would be a goofy method I might try. Until I posted it here and got schooled LOL JR
