Agreed.
If GM decided that they would not at least offer the car it would perpetuate one of the problems that brought them to this point.

Yeah...they'd sell like hotcakes alright. Just like those SRT8 Challangers...right?
By the way, if anyone is looking for one the dealership on Van Dyke in Warren has about 12 of them.
And yes the world has indeed changed. With an Auto Czar looking over our shoulders and 17 billion dollars of of the tax payers money....I don't think Uncle Sam or the rest of the tax payers will be happy seeing us bring a car like that to market.
Damn True
02-17-2009, 09:05 AM
Would it sell at a profit or a loss?
trapin
02-17-2009, 09:26 AM
It would sell at a loss because only a few people would buy one.
Hell we're going to have a hard enough time moving the V6 model. And we should worry about a niche car?
C'mon guys...take a look around. This country is hemmoraging money out of it's ass. 422,000 people are out of work in the state of Michigan alone. I don't know what the number is for the rest of the country and I'd be afraid to ask.
....and it's getting worse. My friend's 16 year old daughter has been looking for a job for 6 months now and she can't even get one at McDonalds because all those jobs are being swalled up by all the adults who are out of work.
I realize the whole arguement is "give the people what they want". But you only do that if you can get a big return on the investment. The fact it is...Z28 wouldn't do that for us right now.

So... is 2009/2010 the last year for the Corvette? CTS-V? the (non-truck) LS platform?
I'm not trying to be an arse Tony but I think that the most important thing for any future model offerings should be profitability - not perception. If one of the conditions of receiving taxpayer moneys (at this point in the form of a bridge load and not a hand out) is that GM has to build governmentally acceptable vehicles... well... the price is too high.
All that will be left will be stretch limo's, Cobalts, and pickups with rubber matts...

rrrr my thought are this are long and out of anger but in the short version is that gm has dropped the ball one to many times and lost the people .... to me this is the begining of the end for them (they should have had this car out 5 years ago when everyone else was introducing the new versions of their pony cars .... also make it affordable (this was the whole purpose of the pony car (to get the young buyers) but know all they want to do is sell over bloated cars .... that the average young person cant afford... this is why this type of car has tanked... i want a well equipped low price pony car if they had this combo they would sell ..... let me have a sit down with bob and i will tell him what people really want not what their warped marketing people think we want

The timing arguement is an old one, most (including I) would agree with you.
At $22K I think a lot of young people would be picking up a new V6 Camaro (especially with 300 hp). But this is in a stable economy. Most of those young people who would have been lining up for it are now buying Raman Noodles by the bulk.
The poor car is just in the wrong place at the wrong time. And it's too bad because it's a terrific driving machine. I know because I got to drive an SS back in December and lets just say...I needed a bag of ice in my lap for a few minutes before I could get out of there. A phenomenal driving machine. I would kill to own one.

Who cares the new camaro sucks anyway. The top designer said it clear "we want to present a new modern dog and not a retro while retaining a smell of retro."
I hope you young guns like it. Us old school guys want buy it. We want retro hands down. The New Dodge & ford pony blow this thing away as far as style. But what do I know I'm old school anyway... I like the old look.

The new Camaro does not suck. Quite the contrary. I would love to have one and would have an order placed already if I weren't a 26 year old college graduate who is flat on his a$$ unemployed. All this after having been a very hard worker and quite successful in my career to this point
The car rocks, but times are tough, and there are lots of people out there with stories just like me and that will hurt Camaro sales. Tony and GM know this.
Seems to me that anyone on this site should know that they can mod the LS3 in their $32k SS Camaro to make plenty of Z28-esque horsepower (and probably for less money in the end). We know how to get the braking and improve the handling through the work of aftermarket companies like Pedders. I'm not sure why guys on this site really need GM to offer a Z28, since we're the guys that should know how to make our own!!

:git: I'm turning 55 this year. I'll be buying a new vehicle in 2010 / 11 and the Camaro is on the list. Unfortunately, to buy the Camaro, I'll have to give up my truck. Having to insure three relatively new vehicles will be too much for my budget. At least I have a couple of years to make up my mind or win the lottery.

GM disbands unit that creates high-performance vehicles
By JAMIE LAREAU, AUTOMOTIVE NEWS
GM's High Performance Vehicle Operations, which created vehicles such as the Chevrolet HHR SS, has been disbanded.

GM's High Performance Vehicle Operations, which created vehicles such as the Chevrolet HHR SS, has been disbanded.
General Motors, focusing on mainstream products in a battle to survive, has scrapped a unit that produced high-performance vehicles.
GM on Wednesday disbanded High Performance Vehicle Operations, which is based at the company's suburban Detroit technical center, and redeployed its engineers, spokesman Vince Muniga said.
"All high-performance projects are on indefinite hold," Muniga said. "The engineers are moving into different areas of the organization, and they will work on Cadillacs, Buicks, Chevrolets and Pontiacs."
The unit created low-volume vehicles for GM's divisions designed to appeal to enthusiasts and bolster the company's image. Products included V-series Cadillacs and the Chevrolet Cobalt SS, HHR SS and a V-8 version of the Colorado.
Muniga said there are no plans for high-performance versions of upcoming cars.
The move is in the spirit of GM's viability plan delivered to the U.S. Treasury Department on Tuesday. In the plan, GM said its future-product focus is on fuel- efficient cars and crossovers. It also pledged to increase its current offering of six hybrids to 14 by 2012 and to 26 by 2014. GM also boosted its request for federal aid by as much as $16.6 billion.
The High Performance Vehicle Operations unit could be reinstated once GM regains its financial health, GM's Muniga said.
"These guys are pretty good at what they do," Muniga said, "They are moving into different areas to work on core products."

WOW!!! I think you're on your own with that statement...:enguard:I would take the 2010 Z/28 over the Top of the line Dodge or Mustang without a second thought...The looks blow away the other two...and if it were to hit production with the 6.2 Litre supercharged motor they planned, the Mustang and Challenger would see nothing more than tire smoke and a BIG BOWTIE through the windshield!!!

The SS Camaro is still over 430 HP and has Brembo brakes and a well sorted suspension, so I think you still have some good options.
All hope is not lost yet, and I don't think the late 70's and entire 80's are going to repeat themselves again. I'd like to think we've learned enough from those years to keep that from happening again.

Gm should just license the Z/28 and SS out to an aftermarket company like Saleen does with Mustangs. That way, they are selling the cars as is to meet Fed regs and let the aftermarket cater to the niche crowd. Didn't they do that with the SS's in the 90s?

I was being facetious. But I've noticed you've had quite a few Challangers on the lot for the past few months. I know because I drive past there every morning on my way to the Tech Center. Also, I rarely see any of the Challangers on the road around Detroit. That's not an indictment of the car (as I love the car) but an indicator that we (both Chrysler and GM) are going to struggle to sell the Camaro and Challanger due to this stressed ecomony.
That is why Z28 belongs in the back of the tool shed for now.

Just wanted to note; Camaros are starting to invade the Tech Center. A month ago you'd have been hard pressed to find one, now they're everywhere. Today I got a look at a burnt orange SS with what looked like an off-white rally stripe package on it. I can't believe how good it looked. Those stripe packages are going to be popular.
They've got to be days away from SOP.

When the Challengers first came out they were selling quite a few at the location but it has tapered off quite a bit since winter came.
