Heres my problem. My 396 spun a bearing. I dont have enough money to rebuild it. I dont have very much money period. Its taken me a while to build my car because i make crap money. I would really love to drive my car this year and the only way i can do that is if i buy a cheap motor. I know someone selling an 87 305 out of a trans am. Yeah i know its a 305 but it runs good and it would get my camaro back up and driving aleast. And it wont be that bad because i have a six speed for it. Then i can save up to build a nice motor while still being able to tool around in my car.
So basically what im asking is, do you think its worth getting this 305? its $150 and has no leaks and runs good. sorry for the long post.
thanks

If it runs well and you want to drive your car, I don't see why you wouldn't buy it. My Camaro is now sitting in the garage engineless because I don't have access to a $150 engine.:) Well, there's more to it than that. I say do it! It's cheap and will get you on the road.

For $150, you can't lose if it gets your car on the road if for nothing else than to just be able to drive it again. Keep your head and go easy with that six speed though or you might end up in the same place that you are now.....i.e. blown motor!

Do it. $150 is not much that way you can take your time rebuilding or going LS

Buy the 305 and sell the 396 to fund a better engine later.

Looks like ill pick it up in a day or so and throw it on in. Now instead of paying all this money to build a motor i can now buy wheels soon. Its gonna be sweet. I think what will end up happening is ill finish up all the little things on the car like wheels, trim, rear discs, interior then ill do up a nice motor for it. hopefully LS1 or 2. So for now it will just be really slow.

your going to need to convert a bunch of stuff to go back to a sb
motor stands
headers
flywheel/flexplate
to start
in the end it might be cheaper to yank the 396 give it a machine shop for a quick rebuild

I have a flywheel already. its off an lt1. i have headers laying around as well. my dads always been a smallblock guy so i got various parts laying around. So i guess all i need is motor mounts i think.

If that is a late model LT1 flywheel I may be wrong but I dont think it will work on the early SBC.

For $150, your not that far away from the parts needed:

Well heres a new update. I found someone that would trade me plus give me some cash for my big block. Hed be giving me a 1969 327. Freshly machined and painted. bored .060 over. comes with everything to build the motor it just has to be built. i think it has fuelie heads too. so id be getting a 327 and cash. Is the 396 original to the car? If so, keep it.
