Been a member here for about three years, and thought it was about time to post some pictures.

Bought this, my first car, a 1979 Cutlass Cruiser, in 1996. Had lots of ideas and plans, and drove it around as a rolling worksketch, untill I bought a house 5 years ago. Started tearing down the car as soon as I started building my garage. I'm about 4 years into the project now, and hope to have it ready for the summer!

This is what it looked like when i bought it.

Here's a couple of pictures of the trunk, which was a project of it's own. Wanted to have true dual exhaust comming out the back, which is hard on these wagons, the way the gas tank and the spare tire is located.

Thanks guys!

Well let's see..

The frame was painted with POR-15.

The front crossmember han been notched, but as little as possible, about an inch. Then again since I'm using the Vintage air system, I have reworked the firewall, and pulled the engine as far back as possible.

The brakes are Baer Track 13" front and Sport 12" back.
Wheels are 255/45 and 235/45 all on 17"x8" with 4" bs.
Bear says that some 16" wheels may fit the front brakes, and my old Iroc Z wheels do, but only by a hair or two! But the brake system it self fits just perfect, and I can't wait to try them out!

In the front the inner fenders are reworked to make more room in every direction, and all fender "lips" are trimmed.

wow, great project! you've done some of the same stuff I'll be doing on my Cutlass project - the trunk battery box, the firewall, the inner fenders...

what are you going to use for HVAC? something aftermarket?

what are you going to use for wipers? or not have wipers?

thanks for posting!

icebird84 what will color be ?

Well, I have always envisioned it blue, but there are so many nice blues!!:hmm: I want an OEM color, preferably from GM. I looked around and found one that I think is the winner, so the next step was to get a rust and dent free hood and trunklid for my old 240 "Brick", from the lokal salvage yard, to practice on.:naughty:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/01/240-1.jpg

This will also let me get used to the color and see it in different light conditions.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/01/DSC_0029-1.jpg

But I'm sorry, that's all you get for now...:ssst:

bonecrrusher Are those door handles from a late 90's Buick Regal?

They were used on tons of different GM cars, from the mid '90 'till about '05 I think. The one at "U-Wrench it" was a Buick from 2000-something.

No rush with regards to the A/C. The summers are still rather cool and comfortable here, but the heater box and the controls are all A/C ready if I decide to add it later.

The steering colomn is from an '02 Camaro, so I'm using a C/C servo and windshield wipermotor from the same model. Had to make an indentation in the firewall, and adjust the linkage arm to get the wipermotor positioned right.

I'll take it as a compliment! Great minds think alike, huh?:)

In order to make room for the Vintage Air box, and still have a working glove box, I desided to move the dash back a good inch or so. Want to make a whole new dash sometime in the future, but for now I think I'll have to make the best out of this one.

And you can NEVER change that dash now, huh?:) Really cool!!

CptKlutz Super snygt projekt! Those dark & cold Norwegian winters makes for a lot of hours in the garage. Makes the rest of us look lazy!

Yeah, got to keep moving to stay warm I guess!:rotfl: Nothing like a grinder and welder too help heat the garage through the winter!

Tony_SS Awesome project! I can't wait to see how this one turns out.... very nice work and attention to detail. I love the hood hinge replacements too - I'm stealing that one!

Glad you liked it, and you are welcome! We're all about sharing here, aren't we?!:)

For the interior, seperate front seats and a center console was a given from the start. Wasn't really sure what to use though. So when somebody decided to hit us head on, and total my wifes '00 Cavalier Z24, two years ago, it became the natural donor for my wagon project. It was a pretty hard hit, but all parties involved, including my 8 month pregnant wife, cold litteraly walk away from it, with nothing more than an adrenaline rush, and the lingering smell of the airbags. Here's a couple of the parts that will get a new chance, in a G-body.

Like I said earlier, I started tearing down the car as soon as I had put the roof on the garage. So it's been back and forth between woodworking and metalworking since then, and just like the car, the garage is now close to done!

And here is finally where I'm at now. A little bit of work left around the edges, before the last round of primer, but finally starting to take shape,
and look like a car again!

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/01/DSC04661-1.jpg

The fiberglass front is cracked and needs some trim holes filled as well, and was only primered now to get the car "in one color" and test the appearance,
with stripes.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/01/DSC_0038-1.jpg

Tinted some primer and layed out some stripes, to see what that would look like. Think there will be stripes, but sudle ones, nothing too contrasty.

To save some money I wanted to try to use the stock engine harness. Found wiring diagrams and tried to undertand and decode them as best I could, and realized that these F-bodies had seperate underhood fuseboxes that held everything for the engine, and a couple more things that would help me out anyway. Like the three-relay cooling fan setup, fuel pump relay and fuse, and the wiring for the cruise control, with connectors for the servo and the steering colomn. So I got my hand on a wiring harness, and got to work. (these are all cellphone pics, so the quality is poor..)

Man, I love this project! Are you a fabricator by trade, or is this purely a hobby?

You said the IROC wheels fit by a couple hairs, can they work? They looked awesome! They looked very at home on the car. Just my 2 cents, but OEM wheels are the way to go!

Also, my 2 cents on paint. Consider white, with black rally stripes like you have. A buddy had a cutlass he painted that way years ago, I've never seen a better looking cutlass (until now).

Thanks for the compliments!

The Vintec Dish wheels I got on are wheels I like a lot, and got for a good price, but I do agree, they might not be the optimal match when the car is done, so they may be swaped in the future. As for the IROC ones, they fit, but the b/s wasn't right, needed a huge spacer for the rear ones... And they are 16"... Still think that a little profile is good, and for me I believe 17" is right.

Have seen a few g-body wagons on the net, with a white or cream paint job, and with the right wheels and stance, that looks really awesome! I can really see what you're saying, but I'm still confident that I've found a blue that will be really neat, and compliment all the other modifications on the car, ones it's done.

And yes, this is just a hobby, or maybe more like an addiction... Has all been learning by doing! My buddy Chris, whose a professional welder, taught me a trick or two, and "NorwayCharger" whose a member here, is my consultant and "paint & body" hotline!!!:worship:

One of the first things I did, back when I bought the car, was to get rid of the rear spoiler, and sand down the hinges, for a "cleaner" look.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/01/2-2.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/01/3-2.jpg

Still think that the rear window is too big, and goes up too far, compared to the side windows, so today I started working on a rear spoiler that will hide the hinges, have room for the third brakelight, and hopefully contribute to make the car look lower and wider. Haven't totally decided if I will be using it. Will take some getting used to I guess... Seems a little "massive" at first. Might be trimmed down a little... Well, anyways, here's a couple of pictures of the mockup so far.:)

That is absolutely true! I love the Magnum, toughtes looking wagon ever made, IMO! Do not have enough of them around here though, and hadn't really paid attention to the rear spoiler of those. But we do have a lot of Audi around here, and I think they have some really sporty stationwagons. For a wagon, there sure is a lot of inspiration to get from the new 580hp V10 RS6...

Haven't had time to work on the wagon the last couple of weeks, but yesterday I just HAD to get out there for a few minutes! Thought I'd try out an idea that my buddy Chris gave me, last time he stopped by. One of those "just for fun" details. Some newer cars have exterior lights that come on with the dome light, when you unlock your car with the remote, and then go off when you open the door, or after a set time. So just for fun, I just had to see what this would look like... There's always a balance between cheesy and cool, so it still remains to decide if it's a keeper... But I think I kinda like it!:)

They were used on tons of different GM cars, from the mid '90 'till about '05 I think. This one I got from "U-Wrench it", off of a 2000-something Buick.

Got a step further on the back hatch yesterday. Using the old inner structure as a start, reinforceing it, and cutting away as much of the old as possible afterwards.

Here is finally the the whole reason behind my choice of car. My father in-law, who owned a body shop in Independence, MO, had a '79 El Camino. He was ready to "hot rod" it, and one day in a parking lot he saw a '88-up Chevy pickup parked beside another '78-up El Camino. Something like this...

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/04/7-1.jpg

...and after some eyeballing he decided that it just had to be tried out...

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/04/DSC_0004-1.jpg

The last two are from a couple of years later, and after it was rearended by a semi at a stoplight...

He never got to finish it, before he all too sudden passed away.

After being part of this I always wanted to do it over again, but for practical reasons, I wanted to try it on a wagon. Bought mine in 1997, and in one weekend in 2001 I did a rough testfit...

Yes, they were from the same kind of truck, as the taillights. Back in '94, the ide of those painted in the car color seemed pretty smooth, compared to the stock ones :)

I like those. Have been thinking about putting them on the Monte doors. I had seen an article a while back where some car magazine fixed up a Camaro & they used door handles like those. Looked good.

Yes, this is all in Norway... I'm 100% Norwegian but was an exhange student for a year back in the '90s. Found my wife there, but we live here in Norway. Go back to KC MO once a year, and we are as a matter of fact literally on the way out the door, and on our way as we speak!!!:) Can't wait!!

Cool build that you have going. I noticed that in one of you last images it looked like you spot welded the bumper on the back side. I assume that you welded up between the spots. If not I'd suggest that you do. After 5 years I can see rust starting to for from the back side on my bumper. I will have to repaint. Not a big issue being that I painted it myself.

Yes, it will be welded between the spots, and given a dash of seam sealer as well, before the whole back side, after painting, is given a good layer of the same rubberized undercoating that is on the rest of the car.

Just TOO anxious to post updates some times!:)

Thanks for the kind words on the truck. We have state laws that require a bumper on all vehicles. I made this one to look like a rear bumper but smooth like a roll pan. I understand about the updates. You can't post images of every thing that was done to the parts. I just wanted to add a suggestion so that you will not have the same issue.

Bought locally here in Norway, but made in China I assume. Only 2mm thick, flexible and waterproof, so they're really versatile.

It was not the stock engine... It was a '70 Skylark engine that I rebuilt back in '97 or so. Other than HEI ignition, I kept it a stock 285hp 350cid. But it never really gave me the performance I expected... I knew the wagon was "long-legged", and when I tore it all appart for this build, I found the original buildsheet on top of the headliner, and got it confirmed, a 2.41 rearend!!!:here!:

Had a late holiday last year, so we missed all the car shows. As far as cars go, I think this was the hightlight :worship: :

I know that dealership... they are about 20 miles (32 KM) from me. Such a small world - especially in the car circles. :)

We need some updates man, I know I'm not the only one on the edge of my seat! :)

Thanks guys!:) Wish I had more progress to show, but have been busy with other things lately. This last week however I've finally been able to get back out in the garage and work some. Been finishing up the edges, and making the rear spoiler.

Found a material called "Divinycell" (www.diabgroup.com (http://www.diabgroup.com)), and decided to try it out on the rear spoiler.

Have a lot of ideas for potential use of this material in the future. Everything from the dash, the inside doorpanels, part of the inner fenders, and the front bumper/spoiler...

This is my first experience with this material, but I think it would be perfect for that. It is really dense, and the same all the way through, and therefor IMO "safer" than the foam. You can cut it and shape it very easily, and the density allows you to make everything from sharp edges, to long curves, and you get start off with something that is flat and even. You roll or brush epoxy on it. It's really light, so where you need it really thick you can use the epoxy to glue several layers together and where you need additional strenght you reinforce it with a layer of fiberglass. I'm really looking forward to using it for other things later on :)

That's it right there, one of the best things about these cars; they're practically free!!:) There is SOOO much potential just waiting to be discovered.

Made a quick mock-up exhaust tip, that my buddy Chis will use as a template. He offered to make them in stainless steel FOR me...

Your question made me look through my 'log', so here are some facts and statistics: Started this build in November 2004. 57,5hrs is the most I've worked on it in one month. In 2006 I spent 303hrs on it, which is the most for one year. It averages about 18hrs a month :)

Finally some progress !! Been a busy week in the garage, and here it is in it's new color. Well, with two coats of base anyway. The base coat sure revieled some imperfections that I didn't spot earlier, and it will show that it's my first paint job, no doubt. The color looks almost purple in these pictures, but it is '04 GTO Barbados blue. Can't wait to get the clearcoat on and see it outside in sunlight !!!

Good choice on the color! Very tasteful and restrained.

Is it to late to keep the Iroc wheels. They look so at home on the car. The way you have stayed with OEM parts, you could convice some this was an OEM concept car!

Thanks! That's funny, I've always liked them myself too. Think they really match the shape of these cars. I want the car to appear 'stock', and more and more I realize that the Vintec wheels I've got will look good, but not really fit the look I'm trying to achieve. Need something more modern, yet 'restrained' like you say. I'm still considering these in 17'' or 18'', though I'd rather have them in an aluminum finish. We'll just have to see where we end up :)

I'm with you. I like the 17" aftermarket versions, but am kind of anti-chrome.

Maybe you could call them direct and get a set before they dip them. Painted silver, or machined would look better.

FWIW, Baer (and others I iumagine) make nice brake packages to stuff under 16" wheels. Even the LS1 f-body stuff is pretty strong for the street (and clear 16s). Then you could keep the 16s.

if anything, i'd go with 16 inch single stripe irocs. black and polished.

and yes, LS1 brakes fit behind them. im doing that under mine. will work pretty good for track, as well.

and i dont see any imperfections in the pics.

congrats on getting it in color.

I got the insinuation and joke the first time. :) Flexing in the paint reflection, LOL. Over here we call it adjusting the zoom and stabilizing the camera. :)

We LOVE them !!! But there are high import taxes on motor vehicles over here, and since they are primarily based on vehicle weight, engine displacement, and hp... :6gears: ... american cars have traditionally ended up being very, if not too expensive. :banghead: Once they are 30yrs or older however there is no import taxes, just a regular sales tax. There are lots of classic american cars here in Norway now. With the prices of cars here being high in general, station wagons have always been popular from a practical perspective, and G-body wagons have been pretty easy to find. As far as I know, mine was sold new here in Norway. :)

Thank you all so much for the nice comments!!

Like I said, the bodywork was rushed and it shows when you get close. Just had to make a decision. Have known it for a long time, but we are moving this week, due to my job. Going about 430 miles back up north, close to where I grew up. Lots of stuff going on this next year; on job training, new baby due in late october, and moving in to a house that need some fixing up, ...and I will have to work on the car, whenever I'll find time for that, in a much smaller garage... All planned, and all good stuff that I'm looking forward to, but the car will definately be bumped down a couple of notches on the list of priorities.

SO therefore I decided to at least get as much as possible of the car "sealed". Easier to work on the doors and fenders in the smaller garage. Spent 30 work hours from I started spraying filler, till the car was done, which is FAR from enough. But now the car is able to sit without worrying about rust, and believe me I've learned a LOT that will help me a whole bunch with the rest of the bodywork.

Hard to say what the progress will be like from now on, but I have a feeling it will be slow.

Life happens, and projects end up taking a back seat, I can't immagine anyone here blames you at all, and if they do, they can come talk to me about it. I've been in the same boat for over a year now and it sucks, badly, but priorities are priorities and family should be the top of that list.
