My ex just moved out and I have to start buying appliances. I have been looking at dishwashers and they seem to be priced on how quiet they are. This got me to thinking about buying a cheaper washer and wrapping it with Dynamat. Are there any cons to this? B---- took everything but the kitchen sink and the oven.

First, DAMN, took the dishwasher......

Second, as a home builder, I would not recommend wrapping a new dishwasher in anything, you would probably void the warrenty. However, that said, there is usually only fifty bucks or so difference in the bottom rung model vs. the next step or two up and those are plenty quiet. Don't get caught up with bells and whistles you will never use, on off and a timer is about all a single man needs.....lol

Ditto what Bill said. I recently bought a returned unit at OSH that was already a lower end model so the price was super low. Since we run it at night we don't hear it run, but it is not too loud even when run during the day. No bells and whistles and works fine.

I know a dishwasher or two. But they keep disappearing. And they don't speak English very well. And they keep talking about how they miss "home" and their "families"....

She was the "dishwasher" wansn't she?!? LOL!
I ended up getting a Bosch one, it is really quiet and I am pleased with it.......I mean, my "dishwasher" is pleased with her "dishwasher" LOL!
Get a stainless tub and not a plastic one for sure. The heating element sometimes may get moved off its stands and melt a hole in the plastic ones.......ask me why I have a metal tub?! LOL!

Damn......I can see the dishes stacked up in your sink from here :smoke:

Ask most guys this question and you'll get the "a dishwasher is a dishwasher" answer.....lol

Just go to Sears, Home Depot or where ever and get a decent one and be done with it. Good luck!

Looking at the DW from the outside in the store will tell you all you need to know. The quietest ones have a quilted blanket looking insulator draped over it. The cheap ones have fiberglass insulation. The ones with the quilted blanket usually are the high end very quiet models. I'd recommend a High end whirlpool or Maytag. (they're the same company now anyway, I think Sears owns them both.)

I dunno if you get them over there but we've got a Meile dishwasher. It is super quiet, does a great job and holds heaps.

I'm a high end kitchen installer and I install more Bosch DW than any other brand.

From wht I have read in the reviews of dishwashers, Bosch units are supposed to be the quietest out there...

The difference between the quieter KitchenAid model (KUDS) and the less quiet one (KUDK) is about $50. This is on a ~$1000 dishwasher. We opted for the quieter one. You can have a conversation right next to it with it going full song and you wouldn't know it is on. I am guessing on less expensive models the price disparity would be proportionate.

When I built my house 7 yrs ago I bought the cheapest dishwasher Lowes sold. Let's just say I got my moneys worth. It works fine as long as you wash the dishes by hand before you load them into the dishwasher.

Married mine

When she started complaining, I installed one (circa 1990). It made the whole house shake. When it Tango Uniform, replaced w/ a Bosch, can barely tell it's running

I recently purchased a Maytag unit. very happy with it - $699 with stainless tub, timer and a few bells/whistles. Not noisy at all plus as someone else stated - run it at night. Not loud enough to wake you and you save $ on electric.

I didn't think about the warranty issue, and I will look for the insulation that looks quilted. As to brands, I have read that Bosch is the best available in the US; the only thing that I know about Meile is that the make a good vacuum cleaner. I wouldn't even buy a dishwasher except that there is a huge ass hole in the cabinets where one used to be and I have to have something to wash dishes after all the guys come over for the UFC ppv's. I want to armbar that b----!

Thanks for the suggestions and responses.

I need a new one too, I'm the manual dishwasher, but the "contractor" grade unit is NOISY, don't dare run it in the daytime. I want the kind you can stand in the kitchen and have a conversation, not turn it on and run out of the house, I hear Craigslist is a great place for appliances,

Not really!.....we had a Bosch, I don't remember the model # but you could still hear it, the wife didn't like it so when we remodeled the kitchen a couple of years ago we bought all GE profile aplliances and dishwasher......you literally cannot hear the GE at all!

Fisher & Paykel dual drawer - 1st, last and in between.

They use 2.5ga per cycle, internally heat the water to 160deg, have a junk trap to keep stuff out of your drains and no disposal to crap out.

I own a company which does service on the high end appliances.Sub Zero, Wolf etc.To be truthfull I would stay away from the European and Australian brands, while very quiet, they don't clean as well and will definitley require more service in its life then your domestic brands.Ron

We have experience with the cheapest dishwasher you can buy at Lowes (You can hear it from 30 feet away and it sounds like you are standing right next to it).

We previously had a Whirlpool Gold dishwasher that was about $600 and did an excellent job and you could hear it from about 10 feet away. During a commercial break when there is a pause in the TV sound you could tell it was running but when the sound resumed the dishwasher faded into the background.

Our current model is a Bosch we purchased from Sears on sale (saved 10%? maybe 15? Cant remember) but I know the price out the door with installation and tax was around 900 bucks. I often cant tell that it is on when I am standing 2 feet away. It is super quiet, but doesnt dry as well as our Whirlpool did. If my brother-in-law handn't used the fire extinguisher on the WP we probably would have never replaced it or known how much quieter the Bosch is.

Really, that surprises me I had a Maytag, noisier (not that bad) and had to call a repair man twice in a couple of years, I can normally fix any thing. The kicker that really freaked me out is a had a burnt mark from the dishwasher on my floor, burnt down about 1/4 inch into hardwood, I replaced it after that.
Bosch- silent and runs like a top. Had one issue opened it up obvious broken part and just replaced it, did not need the repairman.

Its kind of funny, this is a car site. The industy is kind of funny right now.All the tried and true dishwasher companies Maytag,Kitchenaid have been bought by Whirlpool, and are definitely not as good as they used to be{but what is}.The European and Australians companies Asko,Bosch,Meile and Fisher Paykel don't work any better then your basic Whirlpool, but they are stainless and covered with sound deadening. The electronics in these brands seem to be 10 years behind the American companies. Some of the curcuit boards are over $400,and do fail.I have all that high end stuff in my home, but am using a stainless Jenn air dishwasher{just a high end Whirlpool owned company}Ron

quiet is nice but can it double as a parts washer?

My sister used my mom and dads dishwasher to clean her carburetor before reassembling it....from what I remember it worked pretty good
:yum:

If you do buy a Sears product, look for a Sears outlet in your area. I bought a brand new front loading washing machine and saved about $300. It was brand new with full warranty, only problem is if you buy from the outlet they don't deliver.

99% of the sound comes from open areas around the dishwasher and reflected sound.

If there are no panels between the dishwasher and the under sink area, at the bottom of the dishwasher (floor toe kick panel) or BIG gaps around it when installed, it will rattle your bones.

It's like running open "pypes".

The inside of the cabinet area is also a big contributor to reflected sound, it's like an empty room. So if there are big gaps on the sides of the dishwasher, use some foam "tape" insulation to make a soft seal.

We moved a few times, and each time before moving out I'd reinstall the one that came with the house, so I could keep my Bosch (it always ran quiter and did a better job keeping the dishes clean). Long story, but couldn't do it this move, and even though the one we have has lots of nice features and does ok with getting off the hard stuff, it's no where near as quiet as our Bosch. Which is annoying since our open floor plan means the kitchen shares with the TV room.
