What's the minimum distance I should have between the alternator and the steering box? Since it's on the driver's side I'd think that it's not as critical as pass side clearance since the engine moving would move it away from the box, not towards?

Umm.

About 3/8" at the belt. About zero at the back corner of the box.

I think that with some adjustment I can get about 1/4", and maybe with some creative grinding get a little more.

Try for a bit more than what is in the picture. Breaking things due to engine movement is not fun.

I have a bracket available via ebay to relocate the alt if you have an f-body ls1.
