      Tech Safe Zone Thread

Editing thread. I deleted all of the promotional "fluff and puff" content. You guys are forced to wade through enough of that stuff. I sometimes need to remind myself that I was a car enthusiast member here long before I was a manufacturer. So I apologize for the the sales spew. It's gone!

Instead, I thought it might cool to create an automatic transmission "Technical Safe Zone" thread. No sales pitches allowed. Automatic transmissions can seem like mysterious, sealed devices. Torque converters, which are literally welded shut, can seem even more mysterious and confusing. So let's create a safe place--one thread--where only technically oriented information is allowed. Pricing is a reality of life that is impossible to ignore. But let's only allow pricing information for the purpose of technical comparison. Manufacturers and vendors should be free to discuss their products' features, but will be held accountable for explaining the merits and limitations of their designs.

As there are oftentimes, many ways to skin a cat, all who participate will need to be respectful of one another. Ultimately, pro-touring.com members have shown time and again that they can be trusted to source quality tech and sift thru the bull$#!t. Competition is good. In most cases, healthy competition only expands the marketplace, while yielding product improvements. But competition only works if the playing field is leveled. The internet, unfortunately, allows for a veil of manipulation that that is bad for consumers and industry alike.

Maybe this internet "Technical Safe Zone" idea will crash and burn in an all out flame war, or maybe it will catch on and can be applied to other topics (i.e. suspension, brakes, etc.) Lock it or make it a sticky.

Specials and classified have their place in other threads and other topics--not in this thread. Manufacturers and vendors who post questionable content in other threads can and should be invited participate in the "Internet Safe Zone" thread for technical clarification. Sound good?

Before purchasing a transmission from Twist or any other source, it's important to thoroughly scrutinize the list of included components as well as blueprinting, calibration and assembly practices. Knowledge is power and nothing less than full disclosure should suffice. Unfortunately, advertised torque capacity numbers are all over the place. So get the skinny on internals and stick with an established source. As an example, listed below are the specs of a Bowler Performance Transmission 4L65E rated and warranteed to 450Ft Lbs.
Example of a Detailed Transmission Description:
      HARD PARTS
-SPX "The Beast" Hardened Sun Shell: Blueprinted in conjunction with new reverse input drum for matched set
-Performance Wide 2-4 Band with New OEM Drum. Blueprinted in conjunction, these two parts provide maximum surface contact.
-Clearanced Coast Clutch Piston. Add O-Ring Seal
-Hardened and Reinforced Input Drum: Steel sleeve pressed over input shaft for reinforcement
      -New Separator Plate
-Sonnax Billet 2nd Gear Servo with D-cut O-ring for leak free seal
-Sonnax Billet Super Hold 4th Gear Servo.
-Raybestos Stage 1 Performance Friction Plates in Forward, Coast Clutch, Low/Reverse, and Reverse Input.
      -All New Torrington Bearings
-Borg Warner 29 Element Input Sprag for maximum load capacity
      -Borg Warner Low/Reverse Sprag.
      New Heat Treated Stator Support
-Master Kit (gaskets, seals bushings, filter etc.)
      -New Inspection Cover
      -New OEM Pan with Filter
      BLUEPRINTED AND CALIBRATED PUMP
      -Hand Blueprinted Pump
-Unbreakable High Rev Hardened Pump Rings - Mandatory for 5500 rpm plus operation
      -HP Boost Valve
      -New Pump Vanes
      BLUEPRINTED AND CALIBRATED VALVEBODY
-Hand Blueprinted Valve Body: Check and correct all surfaces and passages
      -New Shift Solenoid
      -New EPC Solenoid
      -New pwm Solenoid
      -New Manifold Pressure Switch
-Custom Calibrated Shift Kit per specific application and driving preferences
-New Internal Wiring Harness W/New TCC Solenoid
      -Dyno Tested with Converter
-12 Month Warranty from Date of Use
      Transmission Price (early bell) $2895
Transmission Price (late 97 up bell) $2995
