Metal finish question

How do you Body/metal fabricators acheive the brushed finish look on your body panels? After welding I use a 4-1/2" grinder on thicker metals or my 2" angle air sander on thinner metal to knock the weld down. I use 36 or 40 grit discs then finish it with increasingly finer grits like 180 or 220. last I use a scotch disc for my finish. I get more of a polished look than the brushed look you guys get. I worry that a primer coat won't adhere very well to the polished looking metal.

finish with 80 grit on bare metal for primer finer then that you start polishing the metal
