Keep in mind that a 20x9 with a 275 will look narrower next to a 18x9 with a 275.... but again its all about proportions, and customers personal taste. Something for everyone, right?

For example, those 275's look too skinny on the 20x9 rear wheels of the new Camaro.

True,
Yes, this hobby is subject to all kinds of opinions and tastes. Martin's (aka. gnxtreme) point (which is shared by me) is that good taste is lost on many. I am not suggesting conformity, but rather the simple fundamentals of proportion, balance and execution. Unfortunately many people lack the "eye" to realize the difference and are misguided by magazines, internet gurus and so-called "paid professionals".
FWIW, I've spent many years teaching Martin everything he knows about style and its execution; and remain his main design confidant to this day. He owes me everything… ;)

I have 335/30/18s on the back of my '67 (as well as 275s in the front to match). Do I fall under this catagory? I actually need wider tires because mine break loose at 65 mph when I'm cruising and step on it. I think most guys who invest in mini tubs have some firepower under the hood to back it up. Or maybe I'm the only one?
Oh, but I do agree with the original poster. There are a lot of people who have cars with stock suspension and slap on some large diameter wheels to try to get the pro-touring look. Unfortunately, it doesn't work because the car sits high and has a 18-20" rear wheel with a 225mm tire. These are the cars I would refer to as "pro posing". Seems like every musclecar I see on the streets these days has larger diameter wheels of some type. It's okay, because anybody in the know can tell the real cars apart from the posers.

i know im going to catch a lot of heat for this one post butttttttt.....
IMHO Muscle cars are sooo rare and valuable i cant understand for the life of me why ppl make them Drag strip only cars???
By alll means if you need your speed fix and feel like going to the strip every once and a while go ahead. Throw the slicks on hit that 1/4 mile & when your done take them off and drive back home. Ok i understand that, but why tear everything apart on the inside to make them lighter, and then hack up the back rear of the car to put 20 inch wide tires in the backkk?????????
these cars arent easisly replaceable

OK, so I have a new job at a local Pep Boys. Decent FRH so I took it, but there are some stupid rules. Here is my big pet:
One of the parts people, Melissa, has a Monte Carlo. It's a G-body, with an aero nose. It’s not a bad looking car but it’s 70’s chic with 1/4 windows covered in stickers, big tires out back, with tires smaller on the front but at least they aren’t pizza cutters.
She has a built engine, hole in hood, with a smaller bug catcher, headers and glass packs, and she has had issues with starting it every day. It probably has about 4 degrees initial timing, yet lots of MSD on it, timing is so obviously super slow and dist is so far not adjusted, and she has vacuum advance hooked to ported vacuum.
I told her to bring it in some time and I would dial it all in as it runs like crap. Heck, she even tried to do a burn-out today in the parking lot. She barely got the right rear to turn. I think she either has Cooper or Mastercraft tires and she barely got it to smoke one tire. Sean, another co-worker, has a WS6 with lots of Comp parts and other than a bad cat rattling, it will simply light the tires in 3 gears and he is still learning to shift a 4th-Gen manual.
It makes me want to go out, steal the car, retune it and install some exhaust and maybe a posi and then video it lighting both tires in couple of gears, then return it.
Badly tuned cars bug the crap out of me. What’s worse is when the owners pull out the "oh it’s the big cam it has".
Trust me, when I build engines with custom cams in the .600+ lift range, your little Crane Fireball ain’t diddly.
Another pet peeve of mine is related to a local engine builder who tacks on Brodix Track 1 heads and calls his his work a 550 hp engine. He claims his engines make about 150hp to 175hp MORE than I can ever get his combos to dial in on dyno.
Does he build some decent 375hp to 400hp street engines? Yes, can he tune? Heck no. I can do more with ½-hour , an advance re-curve kit and my dial-back timing light, than he has in years. He is a fairly decent machinist, IF he listens to what the customer wants.
This same guy messed up a crank from a 302 Mustang GT engine while trying to turn it. It was one of first one piece rear seals in our area, and instead of calling another crank shop for core or crank he put my uncle off for 6 weeks. I got pissed, went over there and found that one journal had been oval-ized and since they were at the time rare, sent it to a trusted crank grinder. They actually had no spares but welded it up, reground the one journal and polished it an sent it back. Evidently it was fine, it just needed to be polished and despite that he messed it up.
Bad performance work just makes me cringe.

Wondering what gas will cost when I finally get it done.
i worry about this one too.
i don't like it when someone w/ a nice car doesn't "park smart" in order to avoid door dings etc. "parking smart" means you need to find a "sweet spot", which is a parking space where one side of your car is by a curb and the other is by another vehicle. you then need to ride the curb (w/o curb checking of course) in order to be as far away from other vehicle doors as possible.
i mean, you got a nice car, so you might as well minimize door dings, right?

I have been doing my wiring and have found that some ends have to have the plug and terminal put on by me and then you get a plug with it all assembled as a pigtail and you have to use butt connectors to put it together adding another splice for a problem.
If a guy can put together a plug and terminal on some of the terminals why not all of them? It makes for an ugly situation that is harder to hide and it is just stupid to me. Just send me the plugs and terminals and let me do it RIGHT !!!!!
Also instructions that tell you the color of the wire and not the function and leaving you to try and figure out what to do when the colors of the wires change from what they give you to what is in the harness. a little more descriptive would never hurt , afterall ,they are instructions.

for me it is crooked mufflers, uneven or not level. Header ticks are annoying too. The car could be a total $h!t box, but if the exuast is all hanging an crooked, that makes it a hoopty to me. There are other things too, like when someone removes the a/c compessor, but leaves everything else.

I know some guys that have 2 sets of mounted tires. The 'real' ones for shows and the other ones with the radials for local stuff, crusing, etc. And BFGs are not $50 anymore, lol. My complaint is that same car with no-name white letter tires, that's just cheap.
Or worse, 20+ year old RWL tires. As a former BFG dealer, I see cars all the time (often C3 vettes, for some reason) with really old radial TAs. I saw one last month where the tire had to be 30 years old, it was a few tread designs ago. That is a big peeve of mine, for the safety of the car and the people near it.

It drives me crazy when i see a show car and the owner doesn’t know any thing about it. I once saw an early 50's vette with new vette suspension, drive train and wheels and the guy knew nothing about any of the engineering or work put into it. He obviously paid some one to build the car from the ground up and only cared about the day that he took delivery of the car. I’d point something out on the car and ask a question and the guy would either say something that made no since or didn’t have an answer for me. He also said he only drove the thing about 30-50 miles tops per season because "it doesn’t make sense to drive something regularly that has this much money put into it". To me hot rods should be owned by hot roders
I dislike trailer queens also (notice that I didn't say "hate") if you build it just to look at it just save yourself the $$$$$ and look at someone else's car. By the way, I went to the Columbus GoodGuys yesterday and it was Awesome.

-wrong wheel offsets. Stick out too much, or tuck in too far. That bugs me badly!
-the painted radiator support bugs me too. They should always be black.
-Firebird wheels on a Camaro, or vice-versa.
-unpainted body parts. If you put a hood on your car, don't take 6 months to paint it.
-torque thrust II wheels. I wish I had bought stock in American Racing since 9 out of 10 cars have them. Good looking wheel, but overplayed. I even used to want a set!
-seats that do not match the style of the interior. Especially front seats that are not upholstered like the rear seats. Make them match at least.
-gaudy steering wheels. I've seen some very nice cars ruined by taste in steering wheels.

Especially if it's old and british:lmao:
I pretty much agree with everone's on here but the not knowing anything is probably mine, that's huge in the VW world. Wait no, probably the main and biggest one for me is when someones spendsway too much on a car just because it's old and/or just keeps it in a garage and never drives the damn thing, just keeps it clean and looks at it. I'm sorry but in my eyes, cars are meant to be driven, I don't care if there's only 2 in the world and the manufacture has been out of business for 30 years. Give me an old Trans Am racer, yeah that's getting driven just like back in the 60's, maybe without the wrecks though obviously.
I tell you guys what though, I probably would get killed by true Ferrari enthusiasts because guess what, a 250 Testorossa or 275GT i'm driving the crap out of it, just like Enzo wanted, to experience the soul passion and to enjoy driving it. If I had enough to buy it, I have enough to fix it!
The other thing is trailer queens, I love how they look but yeah you made it just for the show, to be the craziest of crazy but still there are the cars out there that drove that look as nice or even nicer.
Sorry, i'm done:cheers:

Seeing a high end car, then seeing a stereo that's comprised of cheap crap, with a poorly thought-out installation. If you put the time and effort into researching your suspension, your motor, your rear end, your brakes, and all of the other parts, why do you blindly install garbage stereo equipment with no thought as to speaker placement, etc? If you're not into audio, just leave it out or keep it simple! Every time I see a Sony subwoofer and a pair of coaxes in the center console of a $200k+ car, I just shake my head in bewilderment.

Non-hubcentric high dollar (or any for that matter) wheels. I mean come on, maybe it's not a big deal on most of these older cars and as beautiful as my Rushforths are it bugs me I have to have made or make myself a set of centering rings. I'd rather have the price of the wheels $50 higher and have them included.

The only thing that really gets me is someone shooting the bull when talking about their car. My car is far from perfect or finished and never will be. If it is ever done it is time for a new one. GM made the canvas and I am making it mine. I make it. I drive it. I fix it. I do not make it for someone else. Pro-touring was started by Cafe Racing I believe. I was into that before it was called Cafe. Low, Fast, Corners and plants you. I have autocrossed, Gymkhana and drag raced. I like it all and have done it with my first car a 1973 Camaro Type LT. It may be a twenty footer but you have to sneak up on it to get that close.

I dunno. I think that's pretty harsh. AutoX and drag racing are great disciplines. Not everyone has access to a road track. IMHO, a car that can AutoX, drag race, and be well mannered on the street would be more of a "Pro-Touring" type car than an all out road track car. JMHO. Those that do may be disqualified because rule prevent them from running - and PLEASE don't try to tell me that anything can be made to fit the rules. Try putting a full cage into a vert that is ALSO used for regular street driving, and keeping it functional. Car renderings may help people decide on what paint scheme, what wheels, etc. By that definition, frankly most of our site members are part of the pet peeve. Rogues description just seems to exclude almost all of hte hobby and I wouldn't call that an "enthusiast" - more a "hard line anti-AutoX/Drag road racing purist"! :) The good news is that everyone is allowed to have their own pleasures and peeves.

True!
I guess that is a bit harsh but I am a road racing/hillclimb enthusiast.
Like you said, I think Pro Touring means to have a car that can go to a track event and have modern parts but can drive everyday
And the fully caged convertible would be sick! I would daily one! I have wanted to do a VW cabrio up with a full cage, but on the subject, Caterhams do it, they have a cage and you can drive it everyday.

You can also drive a rusty, dented to heck, underpowered, smoking and leaking Pinto everyday. IMHO for a "muscle car" turned PT, if you're going to put a cage in it you started with the wrong car and should have gotten a hardtop. It's just plain dumb unless you have no other choice. Cars like Cobras, etc are a different breed, but taking a Chevelle or GTO vert and caging it makes no sense to me and destroys the car. JMHO. Having a really nice vert that can also be AutoXed - and in some rare instances allowed on a road track, though very rare - is a compromise. But since for most of us at least 90% of the time is spent on the street, there's some real value to be had. Now for stangs and GM F-Body 1st gens, you can add a roll hoop that still makes the appearance OK, but even the hoop does not satisfy most racing sanctioning body requirements. It needs to be a cage.

Ok, here's my biggest pet peeve concerning '60s/'70's cars. Walking up to a very nice looking Buick, Olds, or Pontiac.....and seeing a small block chevy or LS engine under the hood.
Another one....Chevy Rally wheels. They look decent on a first gen camaro or C3 vette, but on anything else they look like absolute crap.
In my opinion of course :D

I would like to expand that to 68-72 novas look good w/ rally wheels, and for some reason if I see a 68-72 malibu, it should have 5 spoke SS wheels.
I don't go to shows anymore (too many guys showing the same unchanged chrap for 20 years) so I would be happy to see an LS swap into old iron. like whmjr said, it's SO much better than just seeing another genI sbc.

Probably the biggest standout for me is seeing $200K+ cars with tons of custom work, completely custom interiors, but with the stock Vintage Air control panel plopped in and sticking out like a sore thumb. It just completely ruins the effect for me.
You spent all that money on your car, you can't pony up a bit more for some custom switches?
Here's a perfect example.

Ok, I'm in agreement with the Novas as well.
I just see far to many tri-5 chevy's, Impalas, trucks, and even street rods with those wheels and the ugly finned center caps. Another pet peeve already mentioned that I gotta agree with is the raised white letter tires. On a restored muscle car with reproduction polyglass GT's or something it's great....but if your running new radial tires, put the blackwalls out.
I have nothing against small blocks and LS engines. I love them. But in a BOP, I prefer to see a BOP engine. This has been argued about before and it never goes anywhere. But the question was asked about what our pet peeves were, and it's one of mine...take it or leave it.

I understand. many people will still consider the LS a 'chevy' engine, though it is 'corporate'. my feeling is, if I've got an old olds, buick, pontiac or whatever, why do I have to be limited to someone else's idea of what is 'correct'? or why be limited to an antiquated design?
lots of guys running the 'correct' engine have aftermarket heads, pistons, intakes, headers, etc; how much of it is really 'original'? better get rid of that Ford 9" rear also!
but to be clear, I'm not arguing w/ you. I love to see different powerplants instead of the same old 350/350 combo that was so popular for so long.

By that logic: Someone builds a Camaro....but replaces 75% of the sheetmetal, DSE subframe and rear suspension, full custom interior, LS motor with 5 speed.....is it still a Chevrolet?
I build a big block Olds with aftermarket pistons, heads, intake, etc.....I'd still call it an Olds.
I don't think there is any concern with any of this being 'original' or 'correct'. But I don't feel that using same-brand engines is any kind of limitation either.

Funny. All the time people ask me what year my car is. I usually laugh and tell them that the frame and some of the sheet metal along with the title is a '66, but everything else is between a 2008 and 2010. Like "Wow, that thing is in great shape for a 1966" when I'd say less than 1/10 of the steel in the car is less than 2 yrs old.
But the block "started life" as a Pontiac. There's not a darned thing else in the entire drivetrain that's from GM. And I mean nothing.

Sure, just add SBC and BBC into the same catetory as BOP or caddy.
I'm kind of with you. It all depends on the kind of build you're going for. If it's all out performance, I'm OK with seeing an LS in a BOP classic car. OTOH, I'm not crazy about seeing a BOP with a SBC or BBC. But, everyone has a right to build their car the way they want. There are some clear differences that in some cases can make a combination make sense. Things that you would never consider as factors unless you start building. Like how the poncho exhaust ports are lower on the head, and angled downward, creating more of a fitmente issue in the same space. Or how there are so fewer induction systems on the market. And, let's not kid ourselves. Building a BOP to the same degree is more expensive and more of a PITA than for a SBC or BBC. Believe me, I know.
BTW, there have been some interesting design innovations for some BOP motors. Things like canted valve heads for Pontiacs as an example. Certainly not the the extent of LS but it is there.
